Bad timing in publishing

Yup. Another review of a book no one read (but should have). If I remember right, Sherry's bad luck was having this book published simultaneously with the onset of the Gulf (not)War. This book was poised for moderate success when WHAMMO! America's jingoistic instincts rose up with the Gulf (not)War and no one wanted to hear about how to NOT be sent off to kill our pigment enriched brethren. Anyway, this book contains an excellent cross section of attitudes about not getting drafted, including a very direct and cogent essay by Muhammad Ali. Generally, this is a mix of interesting and amusing anecdotes involving everything from peanut butter to letting animal scratches fester before you take your physical. The author spent a lot of time and effort on this book and it is a crime that it didn't sell better.

Very interesting book. A must read for anyone interested in the subject. It is not written as "How to avoid military service" manual, but close to it.

This is a great book to read with Pre-K/kindergarteners on the first day of school to help calm anxieties over being in a new setting and not knowing anyone.

In this rhythmic, rhyming tale-set to the tune of "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush"-it is the first day of school and little pig is scared. Although he tries building a tower and playing at the water table, he can't quite get the hang of it and ends up making messes.

When the other pigs go outside to play tag, he hides inside a mulberry bush. There he finds another little pig hiding also. The two become fast friends, making the last half of the day more enjoyable than the first. By story's end, little pig declares, "My first day has made me one happy guy."

Hillenbrand's cartoon-like, mixed media illustrations capture perfectly the initial scariness of school from the little pig's perspective as well as the excitement and fun as the day progresses.

The bright, colorful spreads are filled with action and humorous touches.

An excellent choice for a reassuring, first-day read aloud.

Despite having a wonderfully supportive family, I needed even more comfort after the death of my infant twin daughters. I couldn't understand the emotions I was feeling and I felt so alone even when surrounded by friends and family. This book must be read by every mother who has feelings of desperation and hopelessness. I hope to never have to pass it on to a friend, but if the need arises, I would recommend it positively.

a wonderfully comforting and understanding analysis of loss

a friend lent me this book after i lost a baby @15 weeks in 1994. i was struck by how two men could write a book with such great insight into a loss felt most intensely by women. the authors interviewed women who had experienced loss - either through miscarriage, infant death or stillbirth - and recorded their feelings in a most non-judgmental and sympathetic way.

i found the section on doctors particularly illuminating, since the reaction of my own doctor had been less than warm. peppers and knapp theorize that doctors who choose obstetrics as a specialty, especially young ones, are ill-equipped to deal with loss.

i have recommended this book to many women and will continue to do so. i applaud the authors for a wonderful source of comfort during a most devastating time

My son and I discovered M. Russo's books in the library. He has fallen in love with her stories and keeps asking for more. "I don't want to go back to school" is based on a little boy's fear and insecurity about the first day of school. The topic is simply and clearly managed. Russo's writing style is remarkable because it stimulates conversation about the story and provides me the opportunity to teach my son.

I read this to my children years ago. It is a beautifully illustrated book, and the story is adorable. The author shows you what is happening without being wordy. It is gentle and imaginative. I think adults will enjoy reading this to their kiddies. I recommend it highly.

Do not read this book for your children at night! They will go to bed, but they will not fall asleep as long as you are reading. They want you to read more and more and more... The book is thrilling and written in an intelligent and caring way. Astrid Lindgren, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, will never get the Nobel prize in litterature. Unfortunately. But she won our hearts.

As a school counselor, I purchased this book for my schools that I service for young learners who are experiencing separation anxiety and not wanting to go to school. It is an easy read and understandable by a preschooler and kindergartener. It allows parents to talk to their child about going to school. Even the kindergarten teacher borrowed it to share with the entire class! Great storyline and book is illustrated beautifully.

I bought my first copy when my first son was 8 months old. Of course the pages didn't last long. I kept looking for another one but to no avail! Nine years later I was able to find another copy for my second son!! This book is a must have for any baby! Great gift too!!!

This is an outstanding book for introducing a child to preschool. In my classroom the children chose this as the all time favorite. It has a sturdy hands-on bear that can be moved and placed on each page of the book. My copy lasted for several years in a three and four year old classroom. I desperately want another copy!

Few have approached taboo subjects such as pornography, illegal drug use, professional wrestling and sleazy rock and roll with such unbridled glee and enthusiasm, let alone filed it under nonfiction. Mike Edison is one of the few, the proud, the unabashed. His memoir reads like a rocket to all the places your parents (rightly) warned you against. It'd be foolish to follow Edison's example, but only a fool wouldn't want to tag along for the ride.

This isn't a memoir; it's a crime scene! The author's raunchy and ridiculous romp through the underbelly of the New York publishing scene is not to be missed. The writing is sharp and powerful, like a burlesque rim shot, and the stories unfold effortlessly through fast-paced action and drug-induced narrative. This author writes as if Toby Young downed a bunch of uppers and got smacked in the face by a flying bar stool. With this raving party of a book, Mike Edison may prove a worthy heir to the pill-poppin', line-snorting, gun-toting and anti-establishment legacy of the good Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. It's that good.

An excellent and very moving coming of age story. Ms Lyle's books are filled with marvelous imagery and snips of poetry as well as beautiful landscapes and natural scenes.

The characters are well drawn and memorable. First love and self discovery, as well as a search for one's place in the world are themes worthy of exploration.

I first read this book over 15 years ago as I was entering a troubled adolescence and I have cherished and re-read it many times since. The very simple but affecting story of Jessie, a tomboy looking for female role models and the meaning of true love. It's not just the plot, but the setting of the story, the late 50's/early 60's in rural Virginia that contributes to the tone and the feeling of the joy that Jessie has in just being alive. Many memorable scenes, like when she is riding topless on her bike on a sunny day and smelling the honeysuckle. Wonderful, wonderful book. Why is this out of print? I treasure my tattered paperback. Also check out her book "Fair Day and Another Step Begun" about a pregant young woman and her quest for the father of her baby. It's just as magical as "Barefoot." Unfortunately, it's also out of print.

I found this marvelous book when my oldest daughter was about 2 years old! I should have bought it then! The story of Fenimore B. Buttercrunch and his efforts to go to market are so funny, it is worth the search that Amazon made to get this wonderful out-of -print book! My daughter has a daughter of her own now and I can hardly wait to read "I Will Not Go To Market Today" to her! It is positively hysterical and I hope someone can get it back into print!
