Suzy finds a huge basket in a field, deems it the perfect spot to fall to sleep, and wakes up to find herself in the sky! Only problem is, Suzy is a cat, so she has no way of phoning home for help and finds herself on an adventure in England as she tries to return to her native France. Paul Howard's delightful and fun drawings embellish a fine story for grades 3-4.

Did you ever see a cat water skiing? I read a book about a cat how did. It is called The Cat Who Wanted To Go Home by Jill Tomlinson. My book is about a cat that gets lost. He tries to get back home. This is a great book because it is very exciting. One of the exciting pictures is when the cat swims in the water to catch up with a boat. I think the author is trying to tell you keep trying. Do you think the cat will ever get back home?

My eight-month-old loves this book--and he has very definite preferences when it comes to books. As I read it to him while he sits in my lap, I can see his little cheeks plump out in a smile. I think he likes both the pictures (not too busy, but interesting) and the words (Cats go shmick shmack shmick!). A winner!

My son Ian (now 13 mos) has loved this book since we first checked it out at the library when he was about 7 months old. He's a very active boy and sometimes has trouble staying focused on a book, but he loves to read this one over and over. A great book for a baby!

We bought this a couple of years ago at a game and wine pairing dinner at Mary's, featured chef Doug Mack's restaurant. With the availability of more and more game meats, and we are certainly blessed with a variety of game farms in our area of Vermont, it is not hard to find either exactly what the recipes call for or some excellent substitute. We have made several of the recipes in the book for special occasion dinners and they were real crowd pleasers.

This has become one of our go-to cookbooks whenever we get ready for a holiday dinner.

Chefs Offer Favorite Game Recipes

This is allstar collection from chefs who like to hunt and prepare game, all kinds of game: venison, fish, rabbit, moose, birds, alligator. You get the picture. Actually only improvement would be some color pictures of finished dishes.

Each chef is given brief writeup about his career and involvement with hunting and game and then presents few of his favorite recipes. These are not the chefs of TV fame, not many in fact many of us will recognize, but don't let this be discouragement to this excellent work. There is chef who cooks at times for George Bush, and Robert Mondavi Jr.

Only limited sources of game [when given to by hunter friends] or that which can acquire at local stores. But have managed to try several with excellent results: Herb-Cured Duck Breast with Cranberry and Tawny Port Sauce; Seared Grouper with Purple Mashed Potatoes, Steamed Asparagu, and Crawfish Remoulade; Sauteed Pheasant Breast with Sage Rub and Roast Garlic Sauce.

Each recipe has tips on prep at each stage with some alternatives given and accompaniment tips as well as wine.

What a gift for that game fan of yours.

This book introduced me to studying fuseki.

I liked it at that time because I could use some of the ideas in a fuseki I could understand, that would be somewhat flexible and keep things simple. After that I've got more interested in studying fuseki.

It's not a dictionary, and is not worth "memorizing". It is interesting to see how each stone develops the game in a given direction.

When I read it I was about IGS 9k*

In this book Kato Masao analizes in detail the Chinese fuseki. This is the first fuseki I've learned: the basic ideas are quite easy to grasp and it allows Black to make a vast zone of influence that White will have to invade, creating a fight where Black can take the advantage. There are few josekis in this book but they are analized in depth - something more useful and interesting than an overview of lots of josekis.

Biblical wisdom for living content and happy
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-03
Contentment is the second installment for the On-the-Go Devotionals Series by Lydia Brownback. Small, concise, and thought-provoking, these on-the-go devotionals confront discontentment, frustration, and unhappiness, the attitudes and feelings all women experience at one time or another, perhaps daily. "Unhappiness does not spring from what we lack. It springs from our desire for what we lack," Brownback writes. I have tried to convince myself at times that while I may not be happy about a situation, I can be content. After all, I have been told time and time again that being a Christian isn't about being happy. What Brownback would have me understand is that contentment is biblical happiness, for "happiness, or contentment, comes from where we look and what we believe, not from what we have."

Happiness is something we all want. In America, it is elevated to a birthright. Most people believe that if they just change this or have that, they will be happy. We may be discontent with any number of things, our circumstances, our abilities, our level of prosperity, to name a few. Brownback addresses several avenues in which women seek to find contentment: marriage, children, career, food, pornography, alcohol, sex, television. We go about it in different ways, but we all eventually come to the same realization: This isn't satisfying me; I'm still discontent and unhappy. Brownback explains this is because we have sought happiness in an idol. Brownback's devotionals are written to help women confront idolatry in its various manifestations and to inspire women to place every ounce of their hope in Christ. God has designed us to find happiness, joy, and our deepest delight in Him. He loves us so much that we won't be content until we learn to find it in Him alone.

Our circumstances change; good times come and go. But God never changes. He promises to never forsake His children. Brownback writes that all we have is right now. Whether we find ourselves in plenty or in hunger, God has promised to provide all we need for right now because He offers us Himself. Brownback writes, "Whatever we're longing for but lack is an area in which God will reveal himself to be adequate for us." As we learn to apply this truth and fellowship with Christ, Biblical happiness can be realized. "Reduced to its simplest equation, holiness equals happiness. Godliness, or holiness, is what we have been designed for, and if we are believers, it is our destiny. We are being conformed to Christ, who is himself perfect holiness. Therefore, the more like Christ we become, the holier we become, and we find ourselves increasingly happy."

As in Trust, the first on-the-go book, Brownback uses several people from scripture as positive and negative examples of biblical contentment. The most insightful negative example for me is her use of the Israelites roaming through the wilderness. Their circumstances skewed their perspective of their past. Rather than believe God, they believed "the lie of nostalgia." I also appreciated her use of Paul as an example of how to learn contentment in any circumstance and how to experience God's sufficient grace in Christ Jesus. "Holding that perspective is what enables Paul to be utterly content with mere food and clothing, and it is why he said that the same happiness is available for all believers. Happiness, not the fleeting kind -- the occasional good day -- but the bound-out-of-bed-glad-to-be-alive kind, comes from running toward where God is ultimately taking us. The real source of all our unhappiness is due to the fact that we are running elsewhere. If we would just run in the right direction -- toward Christ and his ways, toward the kingdom of God -- we would find the happiness we are so desperately seeking, because that is the only place where it is to be found."

I am not sure I can express how helpful this devotional is proving to be to me. I have read it twice and plan to start again tomorrow. It is not so much that what Brownback has written is "new" to me. Most of what she's written, I knew already from a much longer book. But I need to be reminded every single day that not only is Jesus the means to my happiness, He is the end. He is everything. Brownback's little paperback is an excellent tool for helping me remember that "God is most glorified in me, when I am most satisfied in Him." I very happily recommend this book to you.

This is a wonderful devotional for women on a topic close to our hearts. Happiness often alludes us because we want something more in life. Sometimes it is hard to be like the Apostle Paul, being "content in every circumstance" (Philippians 4:11). This little devotional helps you to focus on the good things God has done in your life and to be grateful. It is biblically sound and the author shares wisdom that many women today need to not only hear but absorb.

My grandson now has all of the books in this series and has had his mommy read them so many times that he has them memorized. Although he is only three, he sits and "reads" the books word for word. Amazing Machines is an amazing series with bright colors and lots of kid friendly information.
The rhyming phrases are easy for little ones to say and understand.

Breakthrough in four-stone game analysis
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-19
"Cosmic Go" is a great blend of theory and practice as applied to the four-stone handicap game. All the analysis assumes White starts with a one-space low approach move against one of the Black handicap stones, which Black pincers at a side star point -- a very clean and easy to understand approach. The book then goes into detail on all the major White double approach moves against the Black handicap stone. "Cosmic Go" is easy to read, has a great sense of humor, and shows a good understanding of the mentality of the weaker player who will be taking four stones. One hopes Dr. Chatterjee will soon follow up with additional books bringing his keen insight and teaching ability to other handicap levels.

This is a joint review by Daphne and Michael Ryan.

This book provides something usually missing from Go books providing information on josekis and lines of play: follow through into the fighting that results from choosing the line. Not only are good lines followed up, but the consequences of slightly off the mark play is shown as well.

The sections are just the right length for study in the harried lives most of us live.

Even though the book is devoted to handling the four stone handicap, the ideas are based on good Go, and they are applicable to san-ren-sei even games. Examples of the ideas as used in even games (between professionals) are given, so their use in handicap games is amplified by these contrasts.

Proof that the ideas are well developed comes from a game that one of us played with the Mr. Chatterjee. Four stones had never been enough for us against Sangit. After reading the book, one of us played Mr. Chatterjee on four stones. Early in the game he played a variation not in his book, but which he had discussed at the San Francisco Go Congress with professionals and other strong players. Because of the clarity of the ideas in this book, the person playing Mr. Chatterjee was able to come up with the right move and won the game quite handily.

I read this book after starting my new job as a debt collector and it helped me to triple the amount i was collecting the month after I read it. I only read the areas that directly affected my specific job, so I can only speak for some of the book, but what i did read was well written and very informative. A definite for anyone collecting or dealing with credit collectors.
