25 years ago my sons couldn't get enough of this book. I got so tired of reading it over and over. Skip to the next generation and one day my two granddaughters discovered it in a box of their dad's old favorites. They are 3 and 5 and just love it! Everytime they come over, the first thing they do is go dig it out for me to read. Honestly, I've taken to hiding it!

Like the previous review, our copy has been loved to death! It is unfortunate that this book appears to be out of print . . . I would love to get a brand new copy. Our boys have just worn our copy out. Would love to buy new copies to give as baby gifts for boys. Truth be told, I am so tired of reading this book again & again . . . but they adore it.
This is a keeper!

I have taken classes from the author, and the book is written just like his classes. The book goes step by step through the whole process of carving the carousel. I have observed some of Mr. Rienhardt's other works and I hope he continues to write other great books on carousel carving.
Great book if you want to carve 1/8 size horses!

This book includes the plans for many horses and there aren't a lot of separate parts per each horse, which is good. He handles all you need to know in a basic, down to earth manner including wood grain, finishing, etc. He's carved over 1,000 horses so I guess he knows what he's talking about. I hope he puts out other books about different carving styles of carousel horses (especially Mullers) in the future.

Turning the Other Cheek

There's nothing harder to do than to forgive someone who hurt your inner feelings and then acts as if it had been their right to do so. Asking for forgiveness isn't easy, either. It has to work both ways, with equal footing, not one is guilty and the other innocent. It was a mutual discretion and overreacting on the part of the female. We women are good at that, holding grudges and feeling we don't need to give forgiveness when overtures are made by those persons we love. The main thing to remember is that no one owns another. In the movie, 'Smart People,' all the worn-out professor had to say is "I'm sorry. For whatever it was, I am sorry and I love you."
In today's world, you can observe brazen, openly sinful sights everywhere and no one seems to care. They are jaded and don't want to recall the hurtful words or things the other person caused. To the one who had to take the abuse, it is easier to go on and find someone else to love. Let the other stew in his predicament which he brought on himself. Today's t.v. programs have gone too far with the vulgar way to teach their children to act; example, "The Family Guy." It seems impossible, especially on the Fox network, to find a place uncontaminated by images of evil from a violent, polluted world. Not always can we say to ourselves, "I Can Let Go."
It takes a forgiving heart to mend the hurt one caused his loved one. From childhood on we should have been taught to be loving and forgiving to all. But when you grow up without a mother (taken away by God with that foul thing caled cancer), who is there to teach young girls, "It is better to forgive and continue to love the one who was sartastic and carelessly said things he did not mean." It is a valuable life lesson to learn even in later life that God is forgiving, and so we are all children in his image and He is our guide by doing these things so we can learn to avoid the wrong roads.
God still loves the sinner in spite of his bad behavior. Amends can take the place of resentment. Things will never be the same but it is healthful to know that God's blessings come in all sizes and at his own time; some come to us in a quiet way. It is important not to forget to thank God for those blessings. It matters not how small or how large, no matter how simple or how miraculous. Those blessings show us that God is always near and always caring for us. It is hard for a woman to understand the passion her anger and mean act had aroused. Now it is her time and duty to specify why and how she acted the way she did.

Who do you need to forgive in your life? What resentment do you continue to harbor? What walls have you put up so as not to be hurt again? Nancy Leigh DeMoss invites us to take an honest look at our lives and make the decision to forgive those who have hurt us.
DeMoss doesn't resort to simple solutions. She knows that the pain that readers may have experienced run deep. There are situations of physical and sexual abuse. There are times when loved ones have been hurt deeply or have even been taken away through murder. No, forgiveness is not easy. Nevertheless, it is what God calls us to do.
Withholding forgiveness hurts not only the person we hold in bondage but ourselves as well. "Though it may feel right, though it may seem justified, though it may appear to be the only option available to us . . . The very weapon we use to inflict pain on our offender becomes a sword turned on ourselves, doing far more damage to us - and to those who love me - than to those who have hurt us."
In addition, many have difficulty accepting God's forgiveness. "When we refuse to forgive, something is blocked in our relationship with the Father. [There is] a clear connection between our willingness to extend forgiveness to others, and our ability to appropriate and experience His forgiveness for our own sins."
DeMoss also addresses the need we feel to "make people pay." We may feel that by forgiving people, we are not holding them accountable. We are "letting them off the hook." This is not the case. "According to God's Word, wrongdoers will get their just due." Romans 12 tells us that " `Vengeance is mine. I will repay,' says the Lord." "Forgiveness releases the accused from your custody and turns him over to God . . . the one and only One who is both able and responsible for meting out justice."
DeMoss has penned a thought-provoking and insightful book. All of us can use the reminder to forgive, and the encouragement to work through the pain of our past, to wipe the slate clean. She makes the case that forgiveness is a decision, much more than a feeling. She invites us to reconsider what it means to forgive and most importantly, she calls us to forgive.

This book is awesome. Why waste our life on being bitter. God knew before we were born what we would go through and with his help we can forgive anyone of anything. It is life changing, I have bought several copies and the book on CD to share with friends. You will never be the same if you read it and apply it to you life. We don't always have control over what happens in our lives but we do have control over our our reaction to those events. I can not stress enough how wonderful it feels to forgive, the book tells you how.

Almost everyday I meet an adult who is having problems controlling their money. (They make mistakes like using credit cards to purchase items they can't afford or they don't really need.) This book gives teens practical information about how to control their money before their spending gets out of control. This information is crucial for teens to learn while they are young because sadly one of the major causes of divorce is one or both spouses not being able to control money. This is the required book for the Personal Finances course of Teen U.

I have been a recipient of these "Daily Wisdoms" via email for over 4 years, and have saved the passages with no repeated ones in over 4 years...they are true to todays lifestyles and offer individual insight as to how we view, behave and are probably percieved by others. My fellow colleagues use these as positive reinforcements that are quick to read, free of religious tones, and true to todays cultures. A GREAT tool

My daughter, from the age of 6 months (now 11 months) was so entranced by this book, it was like magic. It allows the parent to be animated, and keeps her attention with the great pictures and brief dialogue. So many of the board books are too wordy and most kids will stop paying attention. This book is just perfect for babies, infants and toddlers!

I am 39 and this book is still firmly entrenched in my brain. It was the first book I ever wrote a book report on for class. The story is about twin brother and sister. The brother plays baseball and the sister feels left out. On the day of the big championship game the brother comes down sick with the flu. The sister is an identical twin when she puts her hair under her cap. Donna plays in the game unsuspectingly and.... you should read the book to catch the ending. It's a wonderful book for youngsters.

I laughed out loud or got misty-eyed (sometimes simultaneously) at the photos and captions in this book. The photographer has captured the essence of doggy expression. One of my favorites (and there are many) is the tilted head and "I'm listening" look of the dog for whom it is wished, "May you always understand what is being said to you." This book is a lovely gift for yourself or any dog people you know.

I laughed out loud or got misty-eyed (sometimes simultaneously) at the photos and captions in this book. The photographer has captured the essence of doggy expression. I have seen this book and being a dog lover, I really enjoyed it. Some of the captions for the pictures made me laugh out loud. I saw an interview with the authors and the said that The dog we call an Irish Setter her in the US, is called a Red Setter in Ireland. The Pictures are great and the captions are even better.

Arthur K. Dugan, an avid reader.
Andrea Jaeger's book " FIRST SERVICE " is one of the finest I have ever read on personal spirituality and I have read many. Her life of service to God through the giving of all her great amount of money to develop a place for children with cancer called The Silver Foundation. As I read through her book she reminds me of dedicated people like Mother Teresa in her work with the poor. I will read the book again and highly recommend it to others and how each of us needs to be aware of the less fortunate.

Andrea is defintely an exceptional person, first as a tennis pro, then as a philanthropist. The latter is easily her passion and her excelling service to God.
She relates this story as it unfolds in personal memoir of her life and its turns, each one very much influenced by experiential leadings by God. This continues to develop as she senses signs which she responds to which eventually culminate in the founding of her magnificent work with cancer children.
Puzzling and of concern is her admission that she was babe in the Scriptures and still seems to be convinced by outward confirmation of rather bizarre happenings, rather than clear fountain of God's Holy Word. For example, her story in Detroit with the key to the kingdom is more poignantly given in Scripture repeatedly said to be Christ crucified for sins, e.g. Luke 24 et al.
While truly a model for all, but especially young and talented, to serve humanity, her tendency to follow outward occurrences and inward emotions to the exclusion and reduction of clearly revealed Word of God is dangerous and suspicious.
Don't let any of this reviewer's spiritual concerns detract anyone from this fine read and inspiration to all to get involved and serve.

In the early 1980s, Andrea Jaeger was a household name, even among people who had little or no interest in tennis, the sport that catapulted her into the limelight. One of the youngest players ever to turn pro, Jaeger at 14 was everywhere --- in newspapers and magazines, on television. Her signature long, blonde pigtails made her immediately recognizable. She was the media darling of the tennis world.
Her career was cut short by an injury, prompting her to pursue a dream she had had since childhood --- not all that long ago, at the time --- to work with children. After spending several years acquiring business skills and other related experience, Jaeger and a friend moved to Aspen, Colorado, where they eventually set up a foundation and started a ministry to reach out to cancer-stricken children at a place now known as the Silver Lining Ranch. Jaeger's entire $1.4 million in lifetime earnings provided the seed money for the organization.
That's the straightforward account of what happened. In FIRST SERVICE, Jaeger fills in the details, the often remarkable, behind-the-scenes story of a woman whose childlike faith in God never questioned that He would bring to pass the hopes and dreams she held out for the future --- a future she always knew would not find its center in professional tennis. In her telling of the story of her life, her faith and her ministry, Jaeger clearly demonstrates that what was once considered to be her youthful exuberance is instead who she really is, because her energy, excitement and enthusiasm for life is every bit as much a part of her personality today, at the age of 38, as it was when she was a celebrity teenager.
Throughout her life, as well as the pages of the book, God plays the dominant role. From an early age, Jaeger sensed the presence of God even though she did not grow up in a strong faith environment. Many of her experiences with God have been nothing short of mystical; as a child, she had a vision of the Children's Crusade long before she ever knew anything about the actual event in history. Her narrative is sprinkled with accounts of dreams and visions that are bound to make believers shiver with supernatural delight and skeptics question her grounding in reality. But much of what she saw in those dreams and visions has come to pass and has contributed to the success of the ranch, so the skeptics may have to look elsewhere for something to disbelieve.
True to her nature, which apparently is an extraordinarily generous one, Jaeger is donating all of her proceeds from sales of FIRST SERVICE to help hurting children. In addition to the Silver Lining Ranch, Jaeger and the Silver Lining Foundation (www.silverliningfoundation.org) support children's charities in the U.S. and around the world.

This book by Andrea Jaeger is ideal for anyone who wants to get insight into finding out what is important in life. Andrea was a great tennis player but she has found joy and purpose off the court -- helping others and being close to her faith. She tells her story in a way that makes it clear how others, too, can find joy. The book is also excitng to read as you learn about miracle after miracle that has helped her build a beauitful ranch in Aspen, CO, where children with cancer go to have great days of peace and joy. Andrea rocks! This book is a perfect gift for anyone you love.

I am a daycare teacher and I love using this book with my class. The kids love the pictures. The book shows shapes in everyday ways and that really helps kids get better at identifing shapes. This book is bright and colorful and really gets the children's attention. I would recommend this book to anyone that is working with children on shapes, or anyone that just loves to share great books with children.

Our baby boy loves this book. Infact this is my favorite entertainment for him. Some of his toys and gadgets over stimulate him. Sure they keep his attention for a while but he usually ends up in tears from over stimulation. He has loved this book from the very begining. You can watch his eyes trace the image on the page. He concentrates very hard and you can tell his little mind is working and learning. Every other page is black or white with a simple image of a face drawn on, using the opposite color. Our son is 11 weeks old and still prefers this book to any other including the baby einstein books. I wish there were more black and white stimulation products available. 5 stars all the way!!!
