This was one of the first books on Griveing I had bought. It was a Great "pick". The everyday "passages" hit right how I felt. The words were very comforting and like the author was writing this book for me to try to understand all the feelings and the "loss" I was going though. I Highly recommmend this book for a person who is going through a Loss of a Loved one.

This book was given to me by a good friend after the death of my husband. It got me through that first year. I have given this book to several of my friends who have been widowed. I intend to give it to another friend who just lost her husband. It helps ... it really helps. It is short and to the point. One page a night was what I could handle but it made all the difference. This is a book that every widow or widower should recieve.... it helps you to not feel so alone.

I do not know Molly Fumia, but I do know the subject of grief. I wrote THE JEWISH WAY IN DEATH AND MOURNING. I have never read so profound and beautiful a work on this subject. I underlined it all, and ordered another clean copy. It is memorable; a work of art, a Divine inspiration.

When my mother was diagnosed with terminal stages of colon cancer, our family was literally innundated with "grief coping" books. Being an avid reader, and desperate for anything to help make sense of the chaos and pain, I read them all. SAFE PASSAGE is the only one I have kept and have recently ordered several to have on hand to share with friends. This book is composed of short meditations that are appropriate for all stages of griefwork. I continue to refer to my copy, some nine months after her death. I find that this is a "living" book, with certain passages speaking exactly what I'm feeling, every time I read it - be it a week after her death or months after. Moreover, it is not specifically geared towards the loss of a parent, spouse, child, etc - my stepfather has found it as wonderful as I have. This book has been a lifeline to our family.

Baby's Day Out in Southern California provides a wide range of age-appropriate excursions. Crammed to the bursting point with places to go, things to see and do, special events, ideas for activities and related reading, this excellent book is one of the most innovative, detailed and practical guides around.

Although the contents are arranged by type of place (i.e., museums, aquariums, farms and ponies, flying), it also offers site maps, making it easy to plan a day around a particular location or a specific interest. Listings include physical and Web addresses, phone numbers, directions, what to see and do, hours, parking, admission and membership information, related locations, nearby places and blank space for your own comments. Additional sections contain events by the month, packing lists and road games.

Its most valuable feature is its ability to look at potential places from a child's perspective. Among the 224 sites listed in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and Santa Barbara/Ventura counties are fire stations, school bus yards, museums, libraries, gardens and nature centers, truck stops, farms, theaters and convention centers.

This is one of the best travel reference guides you could acquire if you have young children.

Finally there is a Southern California tour guide especially geared towards parents of babies and toddlers. Your children learn best through first hand experiences and Baby's Day Out is chock full of great places for the young (and not so young) to experience the things they love like animals, trains, parks, aquariums, tide pools, hands-on museums and more. My 10 year old and 61/2 year old twins still love to visit many of the places listed in JoBea Way's comprehensive guide. They also have a list of many new places for us to visit as well.

The book is broken down into eleven chapters covering major areas of interest for young children: Museums, Our City, Gardens and Nature, The Zoo, Aquariums, Trains and more. There are over 224 separate sites reviewed. Locations covered include the expected Los Angeles and San Diego Zoos as well as many less well known places like the Goodyear Blimp Airfield, Tierra Rejada Farm and Pasadena Unified School Bus Lot.

The book includes many helpful tips for making outings more enjoyable and each review contains a concise description, directions with Thomas Guide page references, and cross references to both similar sites and nearby attractions. Easy to spot icons let parents know if the locations can accommodate single and or double wide strollers (most do), and whether gift shops, snack shops or picnic areas are available so parents can plan accordingly. I love the lists of children's books on topic related to each entry and the special pages with simple graphics of animals or things that go, etc. These pages are designed for young children's use before, during or after their visits. For example, the first picture pages are of cars and trucks children might see on the way to their visit.

The final chapter includes a month-by-month "Things to Look For" section featuring holiday, special events and seasonal changes to watch for geared to Southern California. There are comprehensive listings of Fourth of July displays, Holiday lights, Farmer's Markets and more. These lists alone are a great resource whether you have young children or not.

The number and variety of places listed is truly impressive. Our family has been enjoying working our way through the book and finding many new favorites. I plan to give this book as a shower gift to all my pregnant friends and think the book is a great resource for parents of school age children and teachers also.

This book is filled with fun things to do at any age and for anyone who has some time to spend in the L.A. area. We visit there often and sometimes we are looking for more to do than just the big theme parks. There are so many things that I wouldn't have known about, much less how and where to find them. A treasure for anyone, local or tourist.

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and never knew about 90% of the places suggested in this book! In addition to the usual spots (Disneyland, parks, etc), the book suggests creative places like the schoolbus depot and construction sites (from a safe distance, of course!). "Baby's Day Out" really made me look at the world through my babies' eyes, where everything is a new and fascinating experience. For example, when I drive on the highway now, I point out the trucks passing by to my kids and they love watching the different sizes and colors. Before this book, I never would have thought about trucks on the highway as a field trip experience. This book is also very practical, providing all the necessary information, including Thomas Guide map pages, hours, prices, parking, everything! As an added bonus for me, Holt even tells me when they're enough room for my double stroller (with twin 18-month old boys, that is a big plus for me). I live in New Jersey now and bought this book while on vacation in Los Angeles. I wish they would write a book like this for us folks in the east coast.

A very clear and practical view of the Balanced Scorecard tool. The text has the right amount of theoretical background and gives very enlightening exemples and advice to those interested in this field. However most of the exemples comes from private sector and non-profit organizations. Little from government and armed-forces.
But in general terms this is an excelent book. I recommend it.

Niven is one of the best authors on BSC. If this administration and communications tool has been hailed as one the best new concepts in the business world, in nonprofit and government administration it can have even more impact. It is a great general introduction, but even seasoned experts will find enlightenment and a great very updated bibliography. Works very well as a textbook for nonprofit management with HBS cases.

Balanced Scorecards make lots of sense for the For-Profit world for which they were originally developed. What makes this book so good is that they have concentrated on what makes Non-Profits different and how to conceptualize how the BC works in that arena. The book is well written and easy to understand. It is a must for all non-profit execs.

The world lost a real gem of a writer when Stan Berenstain passed on November 29. Together, Berenstain and his wife, Jan, and eventually their two sons, created books featuring lovable but flawed characters who tackle just about every real issue that faces families.

All kids have fears of the doctor, and why shouldn't they? Most doctor's visits for young kids involve lots of uncomfortable poking and prodding, and, more often than not, shots. Yikes! However, going to the doctor is still necessary, we all have to do it. This book will help open a dialogue to let your child discuss their fears, and let you discuss why visiting the doctor is so important. Kids will enjoy the gentle humor and honest portrayal of a doctor's visit (yep, Sister Bear has to get a shot!) and the consequences when you don't go to the doctor (Papa gets sick). A great conversation starter!

This book was the favorite book for my young children (now grown) when we
were preparing for doctor visits. It is still beloved by my retarded son
who is now 31, and I have bought many copies for him through the years. It
covers all the important topics: anticipation (dread), waiting room, routine
exams, and possible shots. All of this is with pictures and words.

The berenstain Bears Go To The Doctor is a great book.I especially like how it has the cubs (brother and sister) going to the doctor for a check-up. They ended up not finding anything wrong with them and getting a shot anyway so they don't get sick. It turns out that papa, whose convises them that he never gets sick, gets sick. This is a really good book and fun to read. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Most children are afraid of going to the doctor (well a lot of adults are, too, but for completely different reasons). When the word doctor is mentioned to kids images of needles, blood, bandages, and strange looking objects come to mind. Reading THE BERENSTAIN BEARS GO TO THE DOCTOR may help relieve some of the fears that children have when they know they are going to the doctor.

In the story, Brother and Sister Bear have to go to Dr. Gert Grizzly to have a checkup. Brother isn't too bothered by the whole thing, but Sister is a bit worried. The next day Sister is able to help out some frightened younger cubs while she is in the waiting room and sets an example for all the children to follow.

Overall, a delightful little book that helps relieve children's fears of going to the doctor and gives them a broader perspective about life.

Machiavelli is not the only one captivated by Cesare Borgia, it seems! What a delight to find a manga series that focuses on someone in the western world. So much of the manga I read is (rightly) based in Japan, with Japanese culture and customs that I don't understand. But to read about Cesare Borgia - who seemed a tedious character when we were forced to read "The Prince" in high school history class, but who has been explored in various historical fiction recently - really, what a great idea. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Too bad Borgia wasn't contemporaneous with Catherine de Medici. What an awful, scheming, compelling couple they would have made...

I love the way miss You Higuri researches her work, it makes reading her books really interesting and exciting. The art is beautiful and the emotional aspects of the characters is well portrayed. I love all her works, she is very talented. Cantarella is one of her more provoking works, it contains some really cool plot developments and some very sexy content, plus some moral issues that will leave you wondering. Read all 5 volumes, it only gets better.

Thank you Ms. Higuri for writing and illustrating this series on the Borgias.
In this volume we get introduced to all the characters: Cesare, Pope Alexander, Vanozza Catanei; Juan, Lucrezia, Michelotto, Julia and the famous poison Cantarella. Cesare is not born of Vanozza, and is sacrificed by Rodrigo (Pope Alexander) to demons for the papal crown. We see his struggle to be loved by his father and his discovery of the secret of why his father fears him, a definite great start to an epic story. The illustrations are incredible with a lot of detail to the costumes and background I look forward to the rest of the volumes. It also seems like a set-up for some romance between Cesare and Michelotto as Higuri is mostly known for Gay manga. Intriguing...

I read the first three volumes of this manga only a couple of days ago and I can say that I am hooked. When I picked this book, I wasn't sure what to expect but I didn't regret buying it at all. This is my fourth Go! Comi manga. I used to read only Crossroad and Tenshi Ja Nai but I am glad that I gave Her Majesty's Dog and Cantarella a try. Move forward with the good work, Go! Comi.

It is amazing to see the way Cesare Borgia transformed from an innocent boy into one of the most legendry characters in history. How the evil consumed his body after his father sold his son's soul to Satan in exchange for being a pope.

His brother, Juan, hates him since they were kids. On the other hand, his sister, Lucrezia, worships him but this brotherly love has turned into a not so brotherly, forbidden love, as she grew up. She is looking at him as a desirable man and not her brother, which brings the story into an edge of excitment. I wonder what will happen between these two in the upcoming volumes. And what about Michelotto, his companion and best friend? It seems that there is quite an attraction between the two buddies but where will it lead to?

I never read about Cesare Borgia before, so it is a good chance for everyone to know about him. We have You Higuri and the Go! Team to thank for bringing us such a beautiful historical romance story. All my thanks for the Go! Team for keeping bringing us such good books and we will always be waiting for your new.

The first story I read by you higuri was "Ludwig II" that also had an historic context but couldn't bore me...
Higuri's mangas contain a lot of text and for normal readers it can take up to 45mins of read (I take 20mins to read a "normal manga )so if you like spending a lot of time wiht your manga; you won't be deceived!

her art is gorgeous, you could just keep staring at the pages (which could explain the 45-60minutes of read ^^;; )flipping them back and forward endless of times.
The emotion of her characters are really well drawn, they evolve as the story evolve (they aren't flat characters unlike some cliché manga...)and keep on surprising you with some of their acts.

well to get back at the point; "Cantarella" is wonderful.
but what's Cantarella exactly about?

**first of all; if you want to keep the story interesting; don't search for too much information because you could end up on non-desired spoilers that could just totally ruin the story.**

In the first volume you meet with Cesare Borgia from the Borgia family (doh!) that are well known for their poison.
You've got his brother Juan (which is favorised by the father) and his sister Lucrecia, who will later become an important character. If I remember right, Cesare is the pope (well at that time not yet...)'s illegitimate child.
his mother gets struck by lightening I think, but Cesare survives while his mother dies.
what happened in fact is that Cesare was sold to demons by his father so he could become pope.

You also meet with Chiaro (aka; michaelotto) who frequently pays a visit to his father who's in prison.
They've got a mask in the family and when putting it on; it's as if they change and become very skilled assasins; that way the legendary assasin michaelotto could survive for years and years...
Chiaro will become very close to Cesare, following him around everywhere until the later volumes where they will eventually part for a while because of some circumstances

-> spoiler <-
(Higuri is known for her stories involving homosexual characters - Ludwig II, various oneshots such as "boyfriend", Gakuen heaven, etc...- so it's only obvious that all the squaling fangirls will get some slash as well...(which pleased me a lot anyways) BUT! if you can't stand such stuff, don't back down to buy it; apart of the hints, the story is worth it!

if you have any questions about the story, you can always ask me.
hope this helped^^

I've wanted to know how to carve these beautiful animals since I was a teenager. This is the book. The techniques and "how tos" are very useful: from making patterns, to proper technique and tools, this is one of THE TWO books on the topic that will get you started.

Also, the author runs a "school" for carving. Horsin' Around. I think it runs for two weeks and is in the 1K plus range, but if you're serious about carving one of these magical creatures, then Bud Ellis is the man to see.

This book is a real insiders look at a contemporary top of the line carving school. Worth the price for the photographs alone, it's a nice plus that the information inspires dreams. I can not speak to its usefulness as a carving project guide as I bought it primarily because it is about carousels and I collect carousel books. Carousel Animal Carving is an excellent new edition to a carousel book library.

This book guided me through one of the greatest challenges in my woodcarving experience. After a couple of readings to become familiar with the process and sequence of operations, I began a project which has brought me more pride, and sense of accomplishment than anything I've ever undertaken. From the design stage through materials and tool selection, technique of workmanship, to the final painting and displaying of the project, instructions are clear and include many tips and tricks of the trade. Professional results are assured. For the first time carver, no clearer and concise guide is now available in my opinion. My interest in Carousel Carving encouraged me to gather many books on the subject. After reading them all, I return to this book for its store of relevant information and instructions on carving an Animal. My daughter is the proud owner of an authentic hand-carved Carousel Horse thanks to Bud Ellis and Rhonda Hoeckley's efforts in creating this fine instruction manual. An excellent companion to this book is the "Atlas of Animal Anatomy" by W. Ellenberger et al.

Roger Blackwell's Customers Rule! tells why the e-commerce business thrill is over, and how adaptable business structures may take advantage of these changes in customer buying habits. The Internet has proven to be not a revolutionary retail changer but an adjunct to traditional retail marketing approaches, and this explains how companies may profit from changes, using case history analyses to pinpoint blended strategies which work.

The title is appropriate. The bottom line: Customers ( continue to ) Rule! It is no surprise that the arguments and conclusions in the book are academically sound, intuitively resonant and empirically valid. It is also no co-incidence that the style is personal, engaging and authoritative without being authoritarian.Authors Blackwell and Stephan are unashamed and acclaimed champions of the art and science of consumer behavior. This is not a recipe book- it is about attitudes and approaches and digs deep into why some strategies will succed and why some will fail. Neither business nor technology exists apart from society. E-business has to blend into the brick and mortar legacy that still provide true value and we are not about to throw the baby out with the bath water. The book is technology savvy without being mesmerized by it. The authors remind us that the majority of the world's citizens are below the digital divide; that human needs, wants and values have not changed fundamentally; that e-business should grasp opportunities , but not shirk its responsibilities as the newest engine of globalization. I feel the book is required reading for MBA students everywhere, businesses affected by e-business ( and which one is not?).It is recommended to all strategists who have been pushed by trendy Wall Street analysts, who, lured by the siren song of e-commerce and have insisted that businesses jump on the next train leaving the platform, regardless of the destination. The authors convince us that there is still no substitute for knowing what you are doing and why.

Blackwell and Stephan apply their considerable experience in buying behavior to the reality of the last several years and find most e-commerce endeavors wanting. Their message is simple: focus on providing a smooth, trouble free experience end to end and you will be far ahead of the pack. Sounds simple, and it isn't. Implementing this concept takes serious capital and serious experience.

This book is a good read for B2C companies online and offline. Its treatment of B2B is thin, and not really worth digging out. It already feels a bit dated, but it is still an absolute "must read" for retailers.

The title, though provocative and tantalizing, is accurate.Authors Blackwell and Stephan are unabashed celebrities of the art and science of consumer behavior. It is no surprise whatsoever that the arguments and conclusions in the book are academically sound, intuitively resonant and empirically valid. It is no coincidence, either, that the style is personal, engaging and authoritative without being authoritarian. The resarch shows; practical current examples are used to cut through media hype and Wall Street analysts' obsession with trendy, flashy technology. Jump on the train, they say: the next e-business train leaving the station- all of them will take you to profits and increased market caps. WRONG! The book asks the difficult questions: Does the e-business integrate with the bricks and mortar reality of creating value for the customer? Does it make for a delightful experience? Does it make the customer want to keep coming back again and again? All this is necessary, but not sufficient. Does your e-business strategy create profit? Can this profit stream be sustained? Does it complement your current channels of supply chain management and does it lead you towards trhe new world of demand chain management? Does your strategy differentiate you from your competition? Can you sustain your advantage? The authors are technology savvy, but not mesmerized by it. The book offers insights into what strategies will work and which ones will fail and why. I recommend this book to MBA students everywhere. It is a survival handbook. Business persons will find the book practical and relevant. It will save them a lot of grief. The authors have their feet planted firmly in reality. They remind us: " e-business is no substitute for knowing what works in business and why." I learnt from this book and am giving copies to my colleague business profesors.

No higher review than liking a book so much that it becomes part of your own library instead of getting gift wrapped. I bought this for a friend's birthday... and even though I'm not in the market for a date, I learned so much about my interactions with others, that I kept the book myself to finish and share. Sold, practical analysis of your relationship style that can be applied in non-dating situations, from my perspective.

I think it would be useful from new-to-dating up through the senior citizens on the dating scene. (There, now my friend won't be identified - I've just covered the 50 year spectrum of the women in my life who are "looking!").

1/2 Dating Advice, 1/2 Self-Help

I was skeptical before I read this book based on the different female personality types that are the focus of the book. I thought, "Oh, no WAY will I match any of these types to a 'T', so why bother?" Imagine my surprise when I found that I possessed a few characteristics of *several* personality types, which grabbed my interest. Once I identified my self-defeating behaviors that lead to dating angst, I was given a list of suggestions on how to redirect energy into something positive versus detrimental. For example, the author suggests that instead of obsessing over when the phone will ring next, women should distract themselves by indulging in positive, nurturing activities and behaviors (she gives specifics in the book for each). It is really sobering to see yourself reflected in these chapters, but everything is always offered as a chance to change for YOUR OWN GOOD with hints on how to do it.

Once the personality types are discussed and addressed, the author gives some very clear, specific dating advice. The nitty gritty stuff includes who should pay for the first date, the pros and cons of online dating, (definately not my thing, but to each his/her own) and so on.

Mixed in with the chapters are comments from "real" men who discuss their personal experiences with the various personality types, and offer feedback on how they view wait time to place a first phone call, how they deal with clingy women, the benefits of dating a woman who earns more money, etc.

Overall, I found this book to be very helpful. It does mix in a great deal of self-help for the various issues that women face that create problems when attempting to find happiness in a relationship. Not as helpful but interesting were the "dos and don'ts" of dating which seemed a bit repetitive from earlier chapters. However, the layout of the book was unique and the added element of the male perspective made it a very quick, useful read.

More light on the problem

I'm one of the men in the Roundtable of Men in the book who gave feedback on dating and relationships.

Now for the book:

First, any woman having difficulty meeting and dating needs to ask herself some questions: Is there something about me or my approach that turns men off? Am I sending out rejecting messages at the same time as I am trying to charm?

Rhonda's book provides a helpful tool for getting the answer to these questions. A woman who can recognize herself in any of these seven relationship-destroying types has taken a big first step in getting out of the trap she is in. Of course, as in any typology, none of these seven may fit you perfectly, but you may recognize in one or another of these seven types, something familiar, something that seems like you or the way you operate with men. If you do, that's something to work on. If you see Ms. All About Me, you should try more listening and empathy. If you spot Ms. Matrimony, then it's time to be more discreet about your grand ambition. And so on for each of the seven types. The book gives many specific action suggestions for each type. The key is recognizing yourself in any of these types.

Now, it does take a willingness to look at oneself to use the tool effectively. Not every woman is willing to do that. It's so much easier and more comforting to blame one's loneliness on the lack of eligible men or complain that men are shallow and interested only in instant sex.

Second, The Roundtable of Men is a great bonus, I think. Here is a chance to listen to men talk about what they really want from women--and it's not just sex.

Worth every penny and sooo easy to read and follow.....

This book nails it! It catagorizes the types of men we have all dated and helps us see them for who they are/were. I would highly recommend this book. It is wonderful to see the different types of men who can't give themselves to us. It is NOTHING we did. We did not break them and it is NOT our job to fix them. Wake up ladies and realize the time we waste on those detour men could be better spent accepting and loving our selves and giving into our friendships. If you have done your best and it still isn't working or he is toxic Please cut your ties to him. It rarely if ever gets better and pulling us down with them destroys two spirits. You deserve better and there will be men out there that will cherish you and love you. Without the DRAMA. Life is too short, but way too long when wasted on a hopeless cause like toxic men!

EXTREMELY HELPFUL

I REALLY ENJOYED READING THE DATING CURE BY RHONDA FINDLING, DEFINITELY AS MUCH AS I ENJOYED HER OTHER BOOK, DON'T CALL THAT MAN.

THE DATING CURE HAS CHAPTERS CALLED, THE ART OF PLAYING IT COOL, WHY IS A GOOD MAN HARD TO FIND AND CREATING ROMANTIC OPPORTUNITIES AND I COULDN'T WAIT TO READ WHAT WAS INSIDE THOSE CHAPTERS. RHONDA DOESN'T DISAPPOINT HERE EITHER. IN EACH CHAPTER ARE EXAMPLES AND LOTS OF INFORMATION THAT TRULY EDUCATE WOMEN.

ALSO, IN THE BOOK SHE REFERS TO WOMEN AS MS. ALL ABOUT ME, MS DESPERATE AND MS. CAN'T LET GO AND THEN SHE GIVES VERY INSIGHTFUL INFORMATION ON HOW EACH WOMAN CAN TURN A MAN OFF AND DEFEAT HER PURPOSE OF GETTING A MAN. THERE'S ALSO A LOT OF INFORMATION ON HOW TO RECOVER FROM THESE AND OTHER PERSONALITY TRAITS THAT PUSH MEN AWAY. I GAVE FIVE STARS ON HER OTHER BOOK, DON'T CALL THAT MAN AND DEFINITELY GIVE ANOTHER FIVE STARS FOR THE DATING CURE BECAUSE I REALLY LEARNED A LOT.

Great games. An instruction book that is also fun to read.

I bought this book after listening to a segment on NPR's Weekend Edition with Scott Simon. After listening to Jim Gladstone and Scott Simon play some of the verbal games over the air, I was interested. I wrote the name of the book, purchased from Amazon.com, and have now played nearly all of the games in the past 3 or 4 years.

I have three children under the age of 4 and they are intrigued by the games, but they are much much too young for any of the games listed, but someday... someday.

I'm also the coordinator for the gifted and talented education program at my elementary school. These games are EXCELLENT for gifted students. Some of their parents report that my GATE students would rather play Sprouts or some of the games from this book than watch tv or play video games. Victory!

I look forward to nights, after my three girls are asleep for the night, when my wife and I can sit in the living room and playing "free" versions of Boggle or Scatergories. I love this book.

Buy it. For $10, you can't go wrong. (And it also makes a pretty good Christmas gift.)

Outstanding Entertainment!

Thanks to this great instructional book, no games boards or electonic devices are needed to have fun with your friends. Lots of great word and entertainment-based games. Ah, simple pleasures! Great (cheap) gift for your game-loving pals, too.

I bought my first copy of this book at a bookstore after browsing through it and discovering some old games like Ghost and Grandmother's House that I remembered playing with my folks as a kid. The new variations on these old games make them fresh again, and there are many other games that I'd never played before -- and which are definitely not 'just kids' stuff'; there's a game called Gravilex that's going to be a big part of my summer this year. I also appreciate the way the book shows you how to play famous board games like Boggle and Scattergories without having to buy the boxed games...It saves money and also lets you play these games anywhere, without having to carry around the box, board, dice, etc. This is a great little book to stockpile and give as gifts -- I'm going to send it to my nieces and nephews at sleepaway camp this summer (Since my chocolate chip cookies are now considered contraband!). In any case, a super little book and a really good value.

I decided to check out this book after reading an interview with the author at UsedWigs.com. I thought it sounded like fun for 10 bucks. Turns out that while some of the games are easy standards that I already new (Password, Ghost), the most interesting stuff here is brand new and really involving. The last board game I bought was Scattergories, which cost like $30...well, this tells you how to play that one without buying any special equipment (its obvious, but I never thought of it), so you end up getting dozens of games for less than what a single one costs when you buy the boxed version. Good deal. Smart stuff.

No boredom--and your brain will thank you!

In this day and age of constant visual and aural stimulation--marketing and advertising messages, music of all sorts, cellphones, PDAs, you name it--it's SO refreshing to see that not everyone has given up hope. Jim Gladstone is obviously someone who values the grey cells, and puts his talent as a writer where his quirky interests are. Not only is this book FULL of original and updated games that often require nothing more than what many of us had on-hand in first grade: a pencil, some paper, a little extra time and a sense of playfulness (okay, and maybe a little competitiveness, too), it's also beautifully designed, durable and very portable. Buy this book and keep it in your backpack, briefcase--whatever you drag your stuff around in. Next time you're stuck on a plane, bus or even your own car and your sick of listening to the garbage on the radio or watching the fluff on TV, pull out Gladstone's Games to Go and give your brain a much-needed workout. For parents who've had enough of GameBoys and giant headphones that keep your kids as alienated from you in the car or on a plane as they are at home, Gladstone offers some fun ways to interact that won't cramp the style of even the most jaded teen or tween. And for the rest of us who just like a good, challenging game now and then (and hate it when dinner party conversation starts to wane), you're CRAZY not to have this book at arm's reach.

This book really is cool and worth the money. I ordered through Scholastic and paid a little bit less. My intent was to be able to teach my 8-year-old, 3rd grade daughter some cool principles, tricks, games for math so she could improve. She's (surprisingly, right) not interested in the book really. I think she's just a little bit too young for it. But I loved the book. When we work over the summer, I will do a little bit at a time with her: Prime Numbers lesson, history of number systems, etc. Little chunks should help improve her understanding and I think ALL kids should be exposed to the lessons in this book early.

my PhD rocket scientist loves it too

This is a truly awesome book, full of fascinating insights, entertaining all the way through and amazingly wide in scope, ranging from school math to jokes, puzzles, games and high-level topics like chaos. Note that the "mistake" mentioned in the first editorial review is not really a mistake but an old joke: How many animals of each sex did Moses take on the Ark? The answer of course is "none - it was Noah who built the Ark!"

Brilliant book

I found this book incredibly interesting, and I'm no maths fan - I leafed through it while babysitting for a friend who has a son of 9, then I bought the book for myself! It is so well written and extremely funny in parts. I would recommend this book to anyone of any age. I guarantee you will learn something new.

It really IS cool!

As a homeschooling parent, I have read a lot of math books written for children. Go Figure! is one of the freshest and most fun! The pages are saturated with information, and my one complaint is that it feels a bit visually overwhelming. Don't let the colorful pages fool you, this book is very meaty and will take some time to digest. My son really enjoyed the section on ancient number systems. The chart on pages 24-25 compares Babylonian, Hebrew, Roman, Mayan, Hindu, and others. Readers can also learn about the golden ratio and phi, prime numbers, Pascal's triangle, buckyballs, and much, much more. There are nearly 100 pages of information here, geared toward middle school and up.
