I have to say, who doesn't love Dr. Seuss? My daughter is graduating high school this year...she is going on to be a teacher and in her high school years she has been involved in RIF (Reading is Fundamental) and has "taught" at a local preschool during school class hours. She loves to read to "her kids" and Dr. Seuss is always a favorite. I didn't THINK of this as a Graduation gift, but saw that someone else did and I thought it's the PERFECT gift for her. She loves Dr. Seuss and she loves to read to her kids...this book says it all to her...Oh, the Places You'll Go. I love her so much and don't know what I'll do without her, but...she will go places...she has brains in her head and feet in her shoes...HAPPY GRADUATION BABY.

I love this book. It is honest but hopeful. I have 2 copies of this book. One for my son and one for my daughter. Neither of them know about them. I have been having their teachers sign a little message to them at the end of each school year and will give it to them when they graduate from high school.

I love this book! We have several Boynton board books, but this one still is at the top of my list and is a must-have for any toddler's bookshelf (with Barnyard Dance running a close second). We have video of our daughter doing the animal sounds to this, and then eventually reading it all herself, because the rhythms make it an easy one for them to memorize.
While all of this is cute and makes for nice photos and video, etc., the more important factor is how this book fosters a love of reading. It's fun, it's energetic, and it makes both parents and kids look forward to reading together. One warning -- be prepared to read it over and over and over (and over!). When they memorize and "read" it to others (my daughter wanted to do it for anyone who came over and would be willing, they feel such pride and joy. To this day, my daughter still feels this way about reading.
Great book for your own child, and perfect gift from birth until about 18 months. If you are even considering buying this...do it. You'll be delighted!

While this a great book for those kids who love rhyming, it is too short and there is not really a connection throughout the book. My son does not love it like other Boynton books such as the Goin to Bed Book.

This has been in our family library for all our kids to read. The best thing I can say about it is that our 15 year old still quotes it upon occasion. The 8 & 10 year old are enjoying sharing it (and other Boynton books) with their 18 month old baby brother as well. They all know it by heart and no longer need the book in front of them. One of those must have items for getting your children to love books and foster the love of reading, poetry and silliness.

He has learned many new words from having this book.

After wearing out a couple of these books 30 years ago with our own kids, we still have fun giving copies to new parents so that their kids can enjoy the search for Gold Bug with them--over and over again. The detailed illustrations keep kids' attention for hours, and the fanciful vehicles and their drivers are great for feeding little imaginations. There is a whole host of R. Scarry books, but this is the one we like the most.

THANK YOU Albert Thomas! I found this book by accident while searching the internet for info on on trend-following for mutual funds, something I was sort-of doing on my own, but without a plan or the great advice Al relays in this book. I'm 13 months into investing using this book's simple method. I started Oct 1, 2006, and to date, my return after all commissions is 37% - the S&P 500 has gone up 14.8% in the same time period.
Al tells you in the book that you can get this kind of return in a bull market, and easily beat the market. From my experience, he's not putting you on. It's such a simple plan, and doesn't require any big amount of time. It's a fun, easy read, it makes sense, and it works. He's a no BS guy and knows what he's talking about.
I was one of the many who were duped into the "buy and hold" mentality over the years - until I lost big 2000-2002. I vowed to never let that happen again. This book really woke me up to how protecting your capital is SO important. This simple tip (and how to do it) combined with Al's showing you how to be in the best ETFs or funds - and WHEN - is fantastic advice. Do get the service he recommends for picking the ETFs/funds, it is WELL worth the small expense. Note that Al is NOT selling a thing, as I've heard other authors do in their books. He's just giving you a fantastic money-making plan.
Do not wait, get this book! Easily the best $20 I've ever spent.

I have to say the jury's still out on this book.
It's a trading manual based on 200 and 50 day moving averages. It uses the simplist of indicators. Hasn't been a bull market yet, so I can't really say how it works. In retrospect it works very well, but so do many back tested strategies. Does have some links to free websites that give timing signals, and you can get the authors e mail newsletter for three months for free. It comes out weekly.
Nevertheless, it is unique in it's style and approach.
I like the fact that the authors e mail shows you his positions and what he bought them at. It's his money in real time. I would buy the book because of it's unique approach and common sense advice. It should be updated to cover ETFs. Even this revised version is four years old.
Buyer beware-It is poorly edited and organized. It needs at least two read throughs plus visiting the sites mentioned and subscribing to the e mail newsleter in order for it all to make sense.
It's a good read and it will probably help you make some money and/or presevre capital.

I've spent a number of years researching and developing my own trading systems that produced average results. Like most people, I don't want to spend most of my time in front of a computer screen watching the price of a stock tick up and down. I was also tired of having to watch for news that might affect my investments. I wanted a method that would allow me to make money and free up my time. Al came through with a simple, but very effective method.
Living in the information age, we forget that simple is often the best. Al helps the investor to know when to be in the market or on the sidelines just watching. Sometimes the hardest action is no action and being on the sidelines with your account in cash can be the best place during a down market.
I enjoyed reading Al's book and I highly recommend it.

Is there a better childrens book than Go Dog Go? Great colors, simple but satisfying pictures, and of course, lots of dogs. Finally just wore the cover off the original with the third kid. If your child age 3 to 8 doesn't like GDG perhaps you should make an appointment. With a lot of Barney/Pooh Bear/TV tie in knockoffs out there, get an original. Also good are: the Bernstein Bears, the Olivia series, Roosevelt and the magic pebble, Ten apples up on top, Are you my Mother?,and for girls the Madeline books to name just a few.

Perhaps it is because I have some familiarity with the eastern thought that I really didn't connect with much in this book. I didn't find anything new or novel. Perhaps if you are completely new to meditation this could be an introduction but, then again, you will have to continue well past this book if you actually want to practice and benefit from meditation. In the spirit of the message of this book, I can say that this book didn't take me anywhere and therefore it succeeded brilliantly!

Definitely among my most treasured possessions. This is my introduction to meditation that wasn't too drastic. It offers an approach to serenity that includes and coexists with the routines and distractions of daily life. The language and layout lend themselves well to the kind of practical advice that is evenly parceled out at the reader's choosing. The steps are easily implemented which naturally leads to sustainable practice, important if you have work duties or family obligations to fulfill amidst the search for inner peace. Whether you read it through in one go or take time reading parts out of order, this thing works wonders. You will always get as much as you put in, which is better than a lot of other pursuits.

While I recognize that the power of some books rest only in that they come along at the right time of one's life...this book was simply beautiful. From the first chapter until about 3/4 of the way through, I was completely drawn in and found most of what Kabat-Zinn wrote to be compelling, relevant and so totally perceptive. He spends the first half of the book building the case for meditation and what it means for live life in the present moment of everyday. He then goes into detail about how to effectively meditate. I also purchased the tape companion meditation tapes and have used them to great effect. The book and the tapes have been a great introduction to the power of meditation in one's life.

People consider this book a contemporary classic on meditation for good reasons. It's lovely and accessible. Jon Kabat-Zinn tackles the difficult task of explaining the nonverbal practice of meditation, which many find alien or even threatening, and makes it accessible, useful and even homey. He explains meditation not only with references to classic texts, but also by recounting his own experiences, drawing parallels with Thoreau, and discussing work and family contexts. The chapters are brief, some as short as a page, each focusing on a single topic. Many are accompanied with prompting questions or simple exercises you can try immediately. getAbstract recommends this book to people interested in reducing their stress, deepening their self-awareness and sharpening their focus.

In the introduction to his classic mindfulness book, author Jon Kabat-Zinn writes, "This book is different. It is meant to provide brief and easy access to the essence of mindfulness meditation and its applications. It is offered particularly for those who resist structured programs and for people who don't like to be told that to do but are curious enough about mindfulness and its relevance to try to piece it together for themselves." In exquisitely austere prose, this text describes the rationale for mindfulness practice in daily life, enumerates formal meditation exercises, and introduces applications and perspectives on incorporating mindfulness in daily living.
Kabat-Zinn is lightly witty throughout the text. In `Keeping It Simple' he writes, "every time you get a strong impulse to talk about meditation and how wonderful it is, or how hard it is, or what it's doing for you these days, or what it's not, or you want to convince someone else how wonderful it would be for them, just look at it as more thinking and go meditate some more. The impulse will pass and everybody will be better off--especially you."
The 10th anniversary edition of Wherever You Go There You Are is a durable paperback on heavy paper stock with jacket flaps meant to be used as bookmarks. I made notes in the wide margin of my copy, highlighting the "TRY" paragraphs with specific meditation or reflection practices of appeal to me. I enthusiastically recommend that you pick up this book from your local library. You will be buying your own copy soon enough. Each of Kabat-Zinn's three books (of which this is the second) is also accompanied by a set of audio CDs that can be ordered from the author's website.

This book took me 2 hours to read and gave me practical information on how to create the life I want. It is one great story (I love stories ~ facts are boring) with many exceptional lessons weaved in. I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to grow as a person and likes to read books written in a story format ~ it's excellent!

A good book. It's a quick, worthwhile read. In a nutshell, it's How to Succeed in Business in a style very similar to Dan Millman's Way of the Peaceful Warrior. It touches the heart and gives hope that you can becomes simultaneously an amazing person and amazingly successful. And unlike the original Peaceful Warrior book, it does give a blueprint.
I don't find it to be 5-star mostly because it is so brief and simplified. (Silly me, the size of a book doesn't determine it's value, but I can't get past that emotional reaction.) Then again, I suspect it's one I'll reread a few times and as I internalize it's teachings, it may earn that last star over time. If you've read a lot of self-development literature, much of the book won't be new or surprising. But even for me, who has read a lot of this genre, one or two lines stood out as clue-by-fours of "oops, I TOTALLY do that." For me, clue-by-fours (ie, an insight that smacks you upside the head) usually make any book worth their price.
I still wish it were a little longer -- just to elaborate on the how-to of changing some of the negative habits into positive ones -- but overall, worth it.

I love this book! I have always used these principles in my business practices but, I had to learn the hard way. The school of hard knocks. I wish every young adult, and every aspiring business person could read this and see truly what it takes to make it in this world. Your paychecks are always a direct reflection of the value that YOU add to the world! What a home run these authors hit! I applaud you and I cant wait to read more inspiration from such great minds!

All the advice we received as kids and young adults about early birds getting worms, the golden rule (he who has it gets it) and power dressing for success falls by the wayside in the face of the simple advice found in The Go-Giver: Find a way to be of service and magnify the effect through others. Duh! What's so complicated about that? So, why do so few people know it, and why do even fewer actually paractice it?
Look at the real success stories around us, the people who live well rounded lives and who are loved and respected by everyone, and you will see that they are living the principles taught in this book. 'nuff said.

The Go-Giver is a great parable, it reminded me a lot of the Greatest Networker in the World. A wonderful easy to read story of joyful service. When we serve others we cannot help but serve ourselves. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is in the business of life.

This book has easy to remember text and is perfect for reading aloud. Children can "read" along and feel proud that they have power over the monster. My co-workers and I have used this book in preschool, PreK, and even younger classrooms.
Reading this book aloud is beneficial because it helps children learn the connections between pictures and words. It also shows them that reading is fun, and can be a starting point for a lifetime of reading.
My daughter received it for Xmas when she was 1 year old, and she's loved it ever since. I think she has always understood that it was pretend, and she enjoyed being in charge of the monster.

I cannot say enough good things. My children love it. My childrens' spanish class loves it. My childrens' preschool class loved it -- and that made ME a very popular mom on the day it was my turn to read them a story. The children want to hear it again and again. My very young children learned to read the words after memorizing the book. It is that good. I don't get tired of reading it with the SHRIEKS of laughter I earn!

My five-year-old loves this book. He is at the stage where he is starting to read on his own and this book is perfect for that. It is also visually stimulating and helps with his nighttime fears. He will read it over and over and then ask me to read it to him! Great book!

When my daughter was very young, I checked this book out of the library and read it to her many times. She marveled at the creation of the big green monster by the turning of the pages. It starts with the two big yellow eyes, then a long bluish-greenish nose and ends with a monster. Then, the process is reversed, and page-by-page, the monster is taken apart until nothing is left but the pupils of its' eyes. I also told my daughter that all monsters can be taken apart in this manner, all you need to know is how to do it.

I've probably read this book about 20 times (over the past 20 years) and it never gets old. So many funny characters and situations. It's kind of surprising it never got made into a movie, but maybe the camp movie genre is already saturated.
If you haven't read it already, it's worth the time and effort to hunt down a copy of this book.

I had this book when I was a kid. I lent it to my friend and never saw it again. It was my favorite book, and I wanted a copy for my boys. I just rolled with laughter when I read it as a child, and when I read it with my wife and kids, they did the same thing. It is a shame this book is out of print, because kids love it. You will not be disappointed.

This is one graet book! It is about a boy named Rudy Miller, who is not very socialized, being sent away to summer camp. He does not take part in any sports, though he is a true Olympic champion back at home. He meets a shy friend, Mike Webster, who is a very bad liar, unfortunatly! With Mike as his companion, Rudy plans a million ways that he could escape this summer camp he dreads. In class, our teacher read "I Want to Go Home" to us. It was hilarious reading about Rudy and Mike's impossible escapes! Read this great story about Chip, the cabin councsiller, Harold, a mean campmate, Pierre, the arts and crafts teaacher, and of course, Rudy and Mike! You will love it!!!

A must-read to share with kids! Freight Train uses simple text and clear illustrations. The book can be very interactive for little ones: count the cars, identify colors, make "whoosh" sounds when the train is in motion and find the smoke from the steam engine. Perfect for toddlers!

I absolutely love this book! We checked it out all the time when I was young, about three to five years old, because I could not get enough of it. I loved the shiny pages, the bright, solid colors, and the different cars on the train. I'd forgotten, until I read the reviews here, that the book had words, but then, that's how I learned the names of train cars. I'm getting this book for my son.

My son loves trains, and he loves this book. I like the way it titles all the different cars, not being a train person myself it has taught me a few things. I like the concepts of the pictures being slightly blurred when the train is moving, b/c we match our train sounds to the speed as we;re reading. It's very delightful, it def deserved the caldecott medal.
