Even if you have no sculpting talent whatsoever, this book is an engrossing read and a valuable reference for any crime or mystery writer. Karen Taylor has consulted for such hit TV shows as CSI and BONES and she definitely knows what she's talking about. The text is lucid and engaging and not at all intimidating, while the photos and diagrams alone are worth the price of admission!

I purchased a copy of this book when it was first published. I actually now have a second copy that is filled with notes. It is an excellent and comprehensive text on forensic art. I have been a forensic artist for over ten years. I encourage anyone in the field who has not read Karen Taylor's book to get a copy and read it thorougly. I have found that I reference it several times a year on variousl aspects of forensic art. In short this book is a must have for anyone in the forensic art field.

As a sculptor, who often creates portrait busts, in the past I have searched for the perfect anatomy book to understand the head. When I found Taylor's Forensic Art and Illustration, I felt I had the information needed to sculpt a head. The book provides illustrations and relationships between the skull and the facial features. This book provides a three-dimensional tool for sculptors. I use it in my portrait
bust classes. I have never found any anatomy book with this much information.

Karen Taylor is one of the most talented and creative artists. The dedication to her craft is clearly illustrated throughout this book. This book is a must have!

I got this book originally back in 2001, and I still use it almost every day as the first stop for any STL issue I have. It's also what I give new employees who need to get up to speed on the STL. IMHO there's no better place to start if you want to learn to use the STL.

If you use the STL, you need this book

Still the best book on the STL. Buy this and Josuttis' templates book and you'll be set to learn the intricacies of C++ programming. There are very few genuinely useful C++ books; Josuttis' books are certainly among them... to the point where I almost never bother consulting any others. If I can't understand it from reading Josuttis, I delve into the header files themselves.

Tutorial? Hardly. Reference? I can find better, more complete, and more accessible reference material in 10 seconds with google. Whenever I open this book to find information about some aspect of the STL, I end up googling for the same information a few minutes later.

The examples are near useless. They are all minimal examples of basic functionality and offer no help in using the library for real-life tasks. They do show you which header files to include, which is a plus.

Hash maps are completely left out of the book. While not officially part of the stl, they are still a significant part of it, and one that requires more explaining than the rest.

I am to understand the +5 reviews were because there are no better books on this subject, similarily my +2 review is because there are not enough negative reviews of this book.

Few times i was loosing this book, bought another one and after short time i dumped it and bought this one again.
Examples and explanation in this book are so usefull, short and easy to understand, that you can't find better book. Your learning efficency really depends on it. Buy it, by all means you will be glad you did it.

This book is *the* way to begin working with the Korn shell. I needed to get up to speed with a shell scripting language in order to do Oracle DBA tasks. I bought this based on the strength of it's Amazon ratings and was completely delighted.

The author has a great style, easy to understand and very clear. I found the procession of topics to be very logical; a nice gradual build up from the simple to the more complex. There is plenty of 'depth' in each chapter and good highlighting of potential problem areas and difficult concepts. These have additional coverage to help steer clear of the hassles and come to a clear understanding of the more challenging ideas.

The examples are well thought out, they present each topic of interest clearly and in a meaningful way, without clutter. I have coded almost every single one and found only a few errors. Within a chapter the examples are presented with increasing complexity, but are never the page after page monsters that leave you lost. It is amazing how well the author illustrates the content with short (20 - 30 line) samples.

When I was puzzled with something I had read here, I turned to two of my friends who 'live' in shell scripting up to their necks. Both have learned useful techniques from this book through my questions.

My copy is literally starting to come apart from constant use for reference. It is that good.

For users who want more than just an intro, you may want to consider "Korn Shell: Essential Programs for Your Survival at Work" by Larry L. Smith. Examples in Randal K. The Timeless Fundamentals of Drawing

Review Date: 2008-06-12
This book is a great addition to the student of drawing's library. The author does a superb job of analyze some excellent examples of classical drawing and elucidates the formal and structural concepts in each. Although this book does not provide very much in the way of "step by step" style technical instruction, it does provide the reader with a way of conceptually approaching a drawing.

The author demonstrates where the great artist used a cylinder, or a sphere to conceptualize a part of the subject's anatomy. He shows how lines are modulated to give varying degrees of tone and shape to the figure. Many of these ideas will stew around in your head as you approach your own drawing projects. Eventually, you will notice that you are more aware of certain parts of the form and that these are being incorporated into your work. Overall, this book is a very interesting and enjoyable way of delivering basic drawing concepts to a student reader.

This is an excellent text/reference for drawing enthusiasts, or students of drawing. Both the way it is broken down, and uses examples from the masters to illustrate the concepts offer a really solid grounding in how line is used to describe space, shape and tone.

This is one of the "timeless" drawing reference books every artist should look at when he/she needs inspiration. Hale picks some of the most dynamic life drawings by the old masters--Leonardo, Ingres, etc.--and disects them in terms of composition, tone, thrust, etc. He is right on in his suggestions that artists should study human and animal surface anatomy to understand the figure. I found his discussion of light and shadow especially instructive.

More of a philosophical approach to drawing than instructional. But, often i find it enlightening to learn HOW to think...more so than WHAT. A great artist can synthesize his ideas rather than simply comprehend them. This book exemplifies and necessitates this philosophy.

Analysis is great

I like that he has a full page to show the drawing and on the facing page he has a smaller version with commentary. He places capital letters on the drawing so you can see exactly which line or shape he is discussing.

This book is very interesting; I have many art books, and this one gets you to thinking. It offers many ideas about how to go about creating better artwork (including using the computer, creating great value studies, use of color, etc.). A beginner or advanced artist would benefit from this book. This artist's work is beautiful. The book is well written, contains great content, and deserves "five stars." RMD

The author has given me truly expert advice. Not only is Keven an excellent artist, but a great story teller as well.

This guy knows his stuff and conveys his ideas superbly with great examples to support his recommendations. I respectfully disagree with his comment in the book "that while copying a picture may require great skill, it is not art. With the fabulous digital technology available today, we students of art can freeze that moment in time that we all wish to capture. Painting with passion comes from within and can be stimulated in various ways. An excellent book for any artist's library.

Great book with lots of top notch art work. With all the good reviews on this book any one can see it appeals to a lot of people.
I would love to see Henry Yan in real life doing his thing, drawing from life.
I got a big kick out of the one artist who was disappointed in all the life drawing and no drawings from imagination, I believe good fantasy and imagined art can be based on solid foundation of good life drawing and I really think Henry Yan is throwing in plenty of his own style / imagination based on what he sees and what he feels.
If I were to pick one book out of my art library that showed me how to draw from life this is the one.

Grace and beauty in the quick sketch

The front cover tells it all. This is a book of sketches drawn from five- to twenty-minute poses. All the beauty of the human form (male and female), and all the power that comes from years of drawing are apparent in each sketch. The amount of written instruction is less than a how-to book, which is fine, because the sketches speak for themselves. The basics of sharpening and handling different types of charcoal are illustrated, and techniques to achieve controlled lines and shading are emphasized. One of the best aspects for me is to see what painterly results are available from using charcoal. A masterful book, and a visual treat.

Master of Figure Drawing

Review Date: 2008-01-18
For everybody whos looking a book about figure drawing, or at least anybody who wants to feast your eyes, This book is truly for you. I know many books on figure drawing are published out there, but when it comes to technique and look this what we, fellow artist, will say are superb in terms of technique and Deep Knowledge, very deep. The books features many beautiful artwork done by Master Yan, from short poses, long poses and also shows lots of approach and style. But this book is not for Somebody who has not any background of figure drawing. This book is for advanced people who already be able to draw figure, so they can look up onto something new and challenging. Because most of the drawing are so intuitive and spontaneous as result of Long long long Experience in mastering Figure drawing. The result may look awkward for beginner, but nevertheless, it's One of the best book you can get. Why I'm telling this? Because I had a chance to be his student and experience it myself, so I can share my experience when I was astonished and paralized to see his drawing in the first time...

Henry Yan was my professor for two semesters a couple of years ago, and watching him draw was like getting to watch the old masters at work- and then he'd turn around and tell us "that's all you have to do." My favorite part of the class was watching the demos and watching him flip through his drawing pad searching for a clean page, because we got to catch glimpses of all his other demos, which were equally amazing. I always thought that there needed to be a book about him, or by him, because I have simply never seen a better figure artist. I was always disappointed when I would find drawing books for figure drawing where the author tried to teach realism, which they were rarely good at anyways. If you want the most inspiring, amazing figure drawing book there is, you should get this book. When I heard he had made it, I ran down to the illustration office and got my copy as soon as class was over. This, and Barbara Bradley's Drawing People are pretty much the best pieces in my art instruction library (sadly I never got to take a class with Barbara, since she recently retired from teaching).

If you are a fan of the works of Harley Brown, Ramon Kelly, or even Anthony Ryder you will enjoy this book. The book shows you how to approach the undertaking of life drawing. The most important aspect of the work is the life that is captured in the drawing. That which is presented is that which is important, and everything else fades into the background. If you are looking for highly detailed, everything in the picture in crisp focus, then this book might not be for you. This is more in the realm of the foundation work for a pastel or oil painting. The beauty of it is that the work can stand alone without going any further. It is somewhat impressionistic in the approach.

This book is a treasure by a true master draftsman. It is not an understatement to say that it is brilliant. Henry Yan is a ridiculously talented soul who teaches out of San Francisco. He paints, he draws. He also does one other thing (that I know of) really well; he is responsive to his customers and mails out the product extremely fast.

Thank you for a wonderful tome, Mr. Yan!!

Yes Congratulations if you buy this book! It is by far the best book on landscape drawing EVER! Ten books by other authors does not cover the volume or quality of information here! I got a copy when I was twelve as a gift. I already drew quite a lot could copy drawings, photos ,do self portraits and such but this volume turned the lights on drawing the landscape (still my subject specialty!) In over twenty years since, I have never found any book on drawing ANYTHING that is more useful than this one folks! If you paint you should get this too! I have never seen a competent painter that could not draw also! So if you do or do not already paint work through this gem of a book ! Give it the time and effort it deserves , do what he says, then find your own subjects to draw as well (preferably from life in the field) and APPLY what you learn in here .It will pay big dividends for you and your artwork!I do not understand complaints about format or lack of color in the previous reviews. You can complain about this masterpiece of B&W drawing instruction??? Jack Hamm is one of the most talented artist-teachers ever!I wish to send him a great thank you ! for this book and his others too. He left us a great gift.It is smart to take advantage of it. What else can I say but if you find a better book on landscape drawing I'd sure like to know about it ! It dosen't yet exist to my knowledge! So get it and have fun !

Hamm's Drawing Scenery book was published in 1972, yet it is still full of useful advice to the artist today. As an author, he makes no assumptions about the reader's drawing skills, and gets right down to basics. This book is broad enough to be written for the general artist, whether you are an illustrator, commercial artist, or fine artists. While it has a slight comic book artist feel about it, the tips and advice are not limited to just comic book art. I've only taken one star off for its unusual layout - but then it was written BC (before computers).

This book shows how to do watercolour figure sketches in a loose free style.

The eye-catching pictures help in showing how to draw people with exercises that are easy to follow and understand.

For learning to draw or paint people and figures this is an excellent book. He also talks about the materials needed; colour mixing, brushwork and practical tips to get the result you are after.

You may not enjoy this book if you like more detailed realistic paintings as his style is sketchy but to me this is the magic.

I've used Photoshop Elements for several years. I started with Elements 2 & upgraded to PE3 a couple of years ago. I found it too complicated so I went back to PE2. The problem is, I never learned to use layers & fudged on restorations & enhancements. Some looked pretty good, some looked "fake". Without layers there was lots I couldn't do. I got the PE5 program a few months ago & thought I might be able to figure it out. I gave up until 3 weeks ago. That's when I got Matt's book. I have worked thru most of the book & love the detailed visual guide for each lesson. I don't want theory, I just want a simple explanation on how to do things. I can't say enough about this wonderful book. I was able to go to Matt's website & download all of the "before" photos that are in the book. I followed the instructions for each lesson using his photos. After finishing each lesson I worked with photos of my own. I can't imagine a better PSE how-to book than this!

I've taken either Calc 1, 2, or 3 at every Junior College (and Cal State U. Northridge) in the northern Los Angeles area and this is by far the best book I've dealt with. The ONLY problem with it is its really bad construction. Almost everybody's book was falling apart so DON'T BUY USED!!!!! I only have the cover left but I think I'm goning to buy another one or its equivalent for Calc 3(multivariable).

If you already own or plan on purchasing Swokowski's "Calculus" (6th edition) or his "Calculus of a Single Variable" (2nd edition), then you will probably want to obtain some of the following ancillaries:

Advanced Placement Study Guide
ISBN: 0-534-93927-9
DERIVE Notebook
ISBN: 0-534-93637-7
Instructor's Solutions Manual
Volume I, ISBN: 0-534-93630-X
Volume II, ISBN: 0-534-93631-8
Mathematica Notebook
IBM ISBN: 0-534-93632-6
Student Solutions Manual
Volume I, ISBN: 0-534-93628-8
Volume II, ISBN: 0-534-93629-6
Study Guide
Volume I, ISBN: 0-534-93626-1
Volume II, ISBN: 0-534-93627-X
Printed Test Bank
ISBN: 0-534-93926-0
Transparencies
ISBN: 0-534-93642-3

Note: Since this book is out-of-print, some of these ancillaries will be difficult to find. I was able to locate copies of the "Student Solutions Manual" and "Study Guide" by doing a "Google" search (I used the ISBN numbers). Volume 1 of the "Student Solutions Manual" and the "Study Guide" are readily available, but volume 2 of both publications are scarce and expensive; for example, a new copy of the "Student Solutions Manual (Vol. II)" costs $83.46 from the UK, and a new copy of the "Study Guide (Vol. II)" costs $57.65. Needless to say, used copies of these ancillaries are considerably cheaper. I did not attempt to find any of the other materials. (Obviously, the quoted prices are meant to be representative and will certainly vary over time.)

"Calculus" (6th edition) contains all the chapters listed below; Swokowski's "Calculus of a Single Variable" (2nd edition) contains Chapters 1 through 9 of the main text plus appendices and index.

Precalculus Review
1. Limits and Continuity
2. The Derivative
3. Applications of the Derivative
4. Integrals
5. Applications of the Definitive Integral
6. Transcendental Functions
7. Techniques of Integration
8. Infinite Series
9. Parametric Equations and Polar Coordinates
10. Vectors and Surfaces
11. Vector-Valued Functions
12. Partial Differentiation
13. Multiple Integrals
14. Vector Calculus
15. Differential Equations
Appendices/Answers to Selected Exercises/Index.

Note: If you purchased Swokowski's "Calculus of a Single Variable" (2nd edition) instead of his "Calculus" (6th edition), then you need purchase only "volume I" of the listed ancillaries.
