Macintosh Books

This is not a how to book - it is an excellent reference book which follows Apple's tradition of clear and concise guides.

This book will knock your socks off! Janet has done an excellent job of walking the reader "step-by-step" through some amazing technology integration activities. So much is simple and fits in perfectly with an already tight classroom schedule. She definitly supports the concept that technology is the tool and not the target. AND she has another workbook "AppleWorkshop for Students"! I got 'em both!

The first two parts of this 3-part book are a collection of monographs and essays on software quality management and certification and testing topics. The third part is devoted to software quality and testing tools.

Since I am more interested in processes and techniques I focused more on the first two parts, which were truly state-of-the-art with respect to subject matter and approach.

Among Part I's highlights were the essays on knowledge and quality management, and cost benefit models for quality assurance. Other essays (paradigms of software quality management and software development, and process-oriented software quality management) were well written and filled with original thinking, but this ground has been covered by so many authors that my interest waned.

Part II, Certification and Testing, had an excellent essay on testing web and e-business applications that I particularly liked. If you are in the embedded or safety-critical development and QA environment, the essay on certifying and testing these systems is definitely worthwhile.

This 288 page book is copiously illustrated with 99 figures and 14 tables. If you are looking for a book on software testing this is not it. It is best suited for advanced SQA practitioners and academics. If you are among that group it is a worthwhile read and will give you fresh ideas and keep you up-to-date in your professional reading. For the audience I cited it is a five star book and highly recommended.

This book is a must for anyone who teaches. This book provides the teacher so many different approaches to testing. I had taught for four years before ever studying this book (and taking Dr. Payne's great class), but I was amazed at how much there was to know and use on a daily basis. Dr. Payne is a great lecturer and a fantastic writer...I highly recommend this book as a guide for creating a good test and being able to evaluate good and bad points in testing.

This book amazed me. The clarity and detail put into each photograph is astounding! This book is the bible for anyone interested in Neonatology or Perinatology

Boyle On Atheism is a compilation of writings by seventeenth-century scientist-philosopher Robert Boyle (1627-91), who throughout his life felt a deep opposition to atheism and planned to publish a text delineating his objections. Though he died before publishing a book on the subject, his many writings rationally resisting atheism survive. Now J.J. MacIntosh (Professor, Dept. of Philosophy, University of Calgary) presents Boyle's transcribed and edited papers, with extensive and informative notations. Boyle On Atheism presents Robert Boyle's views on the causes and remedies of atheism, the nature of God, arguments for God's existence, the virtues of Christianity, and deconstructs the character of atheists as well as the deficiencies in their arguments. A valuable insight not only into philosophical and religious debate, but also greater understanding of seventeenth century society.

A great book for anyone who likes tinkering with the insides of the macintosh & would like to build their own!

Many people who have more than one computer in their home have now added Ethernet networks to connect their computers. Instead of adding a new (expensive) PC to perform file-serving, print-serving, web-serving, and mail-serving, I recommend instead that you get a copy of this book and see just how easy it is to set up a Macintosh to do those tasks. It's much easier and cheaper than setting up a PC with Win9x, NT, or Linux! Just about any Mac will do, as long as it has an Ethernet connection (or a Nubus slot to add a used card) and sufficient disk space--a Power Mac is not required.

Although this book was published in 1996, it's not very dated. Has great coverage of how to build and maintain fairly sophisticated web sites, including use of CGIs, JavaScript, and databases. The last chapter describes how to set up several intranet applications such as phone books, bulletin boards, and videoconfercing. And the server software on the enclosed CD-ROM is free.

If you are looking for clearly written instuctions and advice on setting up a very low-cost Intranet server, or just for a great education on how to do so, this book is just the ticket. My congrats to the author.

This CD is sooo cool ! I liked it because there are lots of places to visit and fun things to do. My favorites are hunting for marshmallows and fishing at the campsite. I also liked being a cashier at the grocery store. However, Farmer Soybean's farm, the schoolhouse, and the beach are really fun to explore, too. The busy world of Busytown kept me busy and interested for many hours !
