A fantastic book which, despite its age, retains it mettle!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-14
In overall usefulness, this book is the best one ever made that covers the chess openings. A little beyond the beginning player, Chess Openings: Theory and Practice is, however, indispensible to any level chess enthusiast once he has committed himself to the game. Though printed in 1969, it shows itself to be in no way behind the times, except perhaps by writing its moves out in the once fashionable descriptive notation, instead of the now popular algebraic style. If you can get beyond that, however, then you, in owning this book, will have taken another step closer to being in the master class. If you can't get beyond that, then I would suggest you petition the publisher to reprint this book, possibly using algebraic notation this time - it is that important a work!

"For me and many arbiters, Stewart Reuben's book is our bible." Casto Abundo, Rating Administrator, Elista FIDE Office.

This third edition, while retaining a compact size, features increased legibility. As well as updated comprehensive and practical information on all aspects of running tournaments, it contains the new FIDE (World Chess Federation) Official Laws of Chess. These Laws were revised at the Chess Olympiad in Calvia, with changes taking effect from July 2005.

Several new chapters have been added on inputting games, websites, junior chess and peripheral events.

The FIDE Title Regulations have been fully revised since the last edition, substantially due to the efforts of Stewart Reuben. What is provided here are the necessary rules, which will enable an organiser or arbiter to run a title norm event.

Various Swiss Pairing Systems are compared critically.

Information given provides what is practically a blue-print to enable an organiser to put together a tournament.

Stewart Reuben is internationally recognised as one of the world's foremost chess organisers and arbiters. He is currently Chairman of the FIDE Organizers Committee; Secretary of the Rules and Tournament Regulations Committee, member of the Title and Ratings Committee and of the Qualification Commission. He is also past Chairman of the British Chess Federation. He has officiated at and/or organised numerous top-level events, including the World Championship. He holds three FIDE titles: Arbiter, Organizer and Candidate Master.

The format of the hardback is slightly larger than the paperback.

Incredible!

This is an amazing book on the Karpov-Korchnoi world title match of 1978, annotated in typically wonderful depth by Mikhail Tal, who was Karpov's second for the match. The whole story is here, including all the behind the scenes intrigue. This is a large-sized book, with the typewriter font, like Bronstein's Zurich '53 book and some of the other excellent Pergamon books from the '70s. But what make this book special and important are Tal's annotations. They rank up there with the other great annotations he has made of his own games. He freely shares his opinions and wit with us. It is odd that this book is not better known; I think the reason is the goofy title: it sounds as if the book is about the history of scandal in chess. What it really is is a world championship match annotated by Tal!

I'm not a great chess player and don't even have a rating. for now my goal is to defeat my dad, who's not a chess lover, but a good chess player nevertheless. I'm about half way through with this book, and I already think it's good.

This book covers not only the basic rules, but also opening, middle, and end game strategy, with hundred's of great games demonstrating his point. Even though it may be a little hard to understand, it clearly states the points he's trying to make, and is truly a wise teacher who's not alive.

This book is worth every cents of it.

a really great book for players who are looking to move beyond the basic moves

I came to this book knowing only the basic moves of chess. After finishing this book I was able to see many opportunities I had missed before. This book presents basic chess tactics in the form of puzzles. Each chapter is devoted to one type of situation that arises frequently during play. Solving the ten or so puzzles offered in each chapter gives you the ability to spot similar opportunities when they arise during play. The chapters on discovered check and removing the guard are especially useful. The only drawback to this book is that the answers are given in the old style chess notation. However, there is a tutorial for reading this type of notation at the beginning of the book. As there is no "search inside" for old books like this, I will list the table of contents below.

table of contents:

Chess Notation
Introduction
1. The Knight Fork
2. The Pin
3. The Skewer
4. More Forks
5. Discovered Check
6. Removing the Guard
7. Rook Checkmates
8. Bishop Checkmates
9. Queen Checkmates
10. Knight Checkmates
