objective coverage of an interesting opening for black

There is very little literature on the solid and yet trappy Cambridge Springs variation, a defense for black to the popular Queens Gambit. As a result of this book I have adopted the opening as black in some of my games, and have found my opponents are frequently surprised. As a bonus, there are some nasty pitfalls that white can fall for. During the 1985 world championship Kasparov sprang the Cambridge Springs on Karpov, and won in 32 moves. <br />Considering there is no other decent coverage of the opening (apart from encylopedias) it is fortunate that, in this case, the authors have written such an objective and comprehensive account. OK, it is written deliberately from black's point of view, as an opening repertoire book. But the assessments, as far as I can tell, are honest, and there is a refreshing amount of original analysis. It is also nice to see that care has been taken, to cater for any different move orders that white might try in the opening. Chapters 10 and 11 give a system for black if white tries to avoid the variation completely. <br />If you want an opening that is sound, but still could catch opponents on the wrong foot, then this is the book for you. The Cambridge Springs is a popular defence to the Queen's Gambit that takes its name from the famous tournament in 1904 during which it was tested in a number of games. Since then it has become firmly established as a club-player's favourite, since Black sets a number of traps and can generate a very quick initiative if White fails to respond precisely. Several world champions have used the Cambridge Springs, most notably Alekhine and Smyslov, while Kasparov has played it on occasion, including a sensationally quick victory over Karpov in 1985. Lucid annotations by a player who actually knew Capablanca

Algebraic version of Capablanca's Hundred Best Games of Chess, with some notes and editing by John Nunn. Golombek's annotations are easy to understand.<p>A true chess connoisseur will prefer this to Reinfeld's 'Immortal Games of Capablanca'. A less obsessive person on a budget will prefer the less expensive alternative.<p>If you don't have Capa in your library, you do not play chess.<p>Addendum:<br>John Nunn writes in his introduction, "... one has the impression of strategic plans effortlessly consummated. This strong stylistic feature makes Capablanca a particularly good subject for Golombek's style of annotation, which eschews detailed analysis. Intricate variations would only obscure the overriding principles..."<p>What's funny is that Golombek writes in his preface, "This simplicity of pefection was the product of supreme art. Playing through a Capablanca game and fully understanding it after close study constitutes a liberal education in the art of chess. For this reason I have found it necessary to annotate the games as exhaustively as was within my powers."<p>Well, Nunn is a Grandmaster, so his standards may be very high!<p>At any rate, Golombek's annotations are certainly much more thorough than Reinfeld's, but they are still textual, not deep in variations, and easily understood by anyone who has read a chess book before.<p>If you can afford it, make this Capablanca collection your choice.Jose Raul Capablanca is generally regarded as the player in chess history with the most natural talent. Champions since have eulogized his phenomenal play, with many of them attributing their development as players to studying his games. Botvinnik said of him: "You cannot play chess unless you have studied his games." Kasparov: "Capablanca invariably chose the right option, no matter how intricate the position." Fischer: Capablanca was possibly the greatest player in the entire history of chess." Tremendous

This is a top-of-the-line Batsford chess book, filled with beautiful thematic examples that examine the impact of castling in chess. Mr. Timmer's real accomplishment, however, is in producing a highly instructive and entertaining chess manual. His style is witty and conversational. I found myself sticking with this book while many others sat dormant on my shelves. Do not dismiss this as a book only about castling; it is about chess strategy, as seen through the lens of castling, and it is both instructive, entertaining, and beautifully produced.The King is the most valuable piece on the chess board, yet many players give little thought to where His Majesty should reside. This wide-ranging and entertaining survey explains the dangers of leaving the King in the center, and the possible drawbacks to castling too early, too late or on the wrong side but also explains when you should castle early or late and whether to go Kingside or Queenside. It also demonstrates the devastating effects of unexpected castling and includes standard attacking methods against the castled position. Good starting point, and having it on CD makes this a no-brainer purchase

I am a USCF Class A player and finally decided to switch back to 1.e4 full-time for the first time since 1997. I had been mainly using 1.d4 and varying with other first moves (1.c4, 1.e4, and 1.Nf3) according to my opponent, tournament situation, and most of all my current confidence in the kinds of positions that I could or couldn't play. <br /> <br />I have more than a basic grasp of 1.e4 and have decent knowledge of a number of systems, so I was not starting from scratch. Having said that, I found this book-on-CD immensely valuable as it made sensible choices of variations to play and provided games that seemed to fit well with it. <br /> <br />Chess publishing houses should feel stupid that they do not make more books available on CD (ChessBase format). Even if they charged $40 I would still pay, because the learning is so much more effective. I am convinced that chessplayers would buy them through the roof. It is possible that if I had the paperback version I would not have liked this work as much, but on CD it is everything I wanted and a bit more than I expected. <br /> <br />I don't expect a complete treatment of every opening in a "Starting Out" book, but I wanted this to orient me back into the 1.e4 world and it accomplished that. It is now up to me to acquire the more specific knowledge of variations that I will need in tournament play. <br /> <br />If I'm in Class A and this CD helped me a lot, I KNOW it can help beginning and intermediate players. Again, even if you don't accept all of McDonald's lines, the ones you do like will stick easier. <br /> <br />In the past I have entered analysis from books into my ChessBase to make study easier and it is very time-consuming. This book recounts the third of the five chapters in the half-decade long rivalry which erupted between Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov. A true Rosetta Stone for unlocking the mysteries of how White maintains (or tries to !) an advantage in the highly theoretical Rb1 lines of the Modern Exchange variation. In that line, it seems to be in keeping with other efforts from this publisher, (Vigorito's Challenging the Nimzo & Marin's epic tomes on Open games and the Spanish) all of which seem to be aimed at a higher (rating-wise) market than their leading competitors. <br /> <br />To be certain, it is more analysis than prose heavy, but the narrative contained is as clear as it is concise, providing ample verbage for the rhetorically hungry strategist. <br /> <br />I applaud their efforts, and hope Pinski's next book on the mercurial King's Gambit delivers the goods as well as he did here. <br />This is a thorough guide to a very complex opening system for experienced players. Organised in the traditional 'complete' style, this is more than just a repertoire for White against this topical system. Experienced players are attracted to the strategic complexity of 1.d4 openings, but do not know how to deal with the dynamic Grunfeld Defence. Here, an International Master suggests that the answer is the Modern Exchange Variation, as favoured by Kramnik, Gelfand, Anand and other top grandmasters on numerous occasions. With in-depth coverage, the book includes 50 main games readers can play through with conclusions at the end of every game and chapter. Great for children learning Chess

Several years ago, my son bought this book when he was in first grade. He loved it because he likes mazes. This book taught him how to move the pieces in Chess. He then went on to join his schools Chess Club, and got a lot of enjoyment from that. It is a great teaching tool for young Chess players.
