i bought this book while touring the gettysburg battlefield for my 4 and 7 year olds. written by patricia pingry and illustrated by stephanie mcfetridge britt, i think that it is a fine "board" booklet introducing the american civil war, the battle, and, of course, lincoln's gettysburg address. i've gotta give it to them - there've been hundreds of thousands of pages written about gettysburg. reviewing, selecting information for incorporation into a book such as this must be difficult. i thought that it was very good selection and writing. the illustrations were excellent. so many of the soldiers appeared to be quite young - this has the potential to bring the reader in and relate better but it also could instill some sense of fear that parents must address with their child. as a lover of history, i try everything to get my children interested in it. (i think i might be accomplishing this). overall, i think that this is a very good book for children that must be read with parents, so that they can explain and discuss peace, war, values, vulnerabilities ... i think that it is worth the new price (if you get free shipping).

a pomo book that reads like Kitchen Confidential????

Few people have been able to translate the ideas of Virilio, Deleuze and Baudrillard into the realm of International Relations with much success. Pomo IR has often come across as self-indulgent and willfully obscure - a clique that writes for the converted...
But Der Derian - who has flirted with rather 'esoteric' writing styles in the past - has produced a book that steps outside the pomo area and gets out the safe confines of the campus for a trip around the sites where virtual warfare is being established.
The book is a pleasure to read (!) and comes across like Anthony Bourdain (author of Kitchen Confidential) writing about Virilio and virtuality - it is personal, sometimes darkly humourous, fascinating and warm...unusual in the cold, neutral world of IR theory (critical or 'mainstream').
The book is the clearest statement of Der Derian's project and clarified what I had always suspected - that he is concerned with developing a 'sociology of morality' (a global sociology that looks at the social production of indifference). In this sense, it is a useful continuation of the project that Zygmunt Bauman initiated in Modernity and the Holocaust and deserves to be read by people outside the IR camp...
Of course, many will argue that he fails to tackle the dynamics of virtual or postmodern capitalism (and Marx and the Marxist tradition is not really considered in his final musings on theory). But the book develops a powerful approach to the dangers of virtual death that can be appreciated by people coming from different angles...
This book is a great read...and it is great to see a critical intellectual in IR writing for a wider audience. I still would like more on what it mean would to accept Virilio's critique of dromocratic society: how would Der Derian and Virilio imagine alternative to virtual life and death....

My thoughts on this book was it was very interesting . It was interesting because it talked about the Civil War. This book helped to understand more amazing facts on the Civil War. The language wasn't hard at all and I understood the authors theme of the book. This is one of the best books I've ever read and I would recommened this book to anyone who likes to learn about the Civil War.

This is a really cool book and if you don't read it then you are missing out on a lot of fun! If you are looking for a good history book about slavery, then pick this book, Which Way Freedom. The plot of this book is about slaves and the civil war. Who joins a black union formed by all slaves and former slaves. Find our what happens by reading this book. Which Way Freedom is the name of this is an exciting fun book to read. That is only if you would like to read about slavery. My opinion about this book is that it is good sometimes and boring sometimes. If I had a scale I would rate it in a 5, it is ok.

I have read this book before, and I am sure I will read it again. This is a very good book about the hardships of slavery. A slave that works all day in the tabacco fields decides to run away and he joins the Union soldiers as a colored Yankee. I highly recommend this book for readers who would like to learn about the Civil War or people who are looking for a good read.

Overall good book, Alekhine gives his comments on these 107 games played during his time. He does a great job at revealing the players way of thinking and the hows and whys of each move. However, the title of this book is very misleading, potential buyers are led to beleive that Alekhine actually playes all 107 games. He only plays 30! If you want purely games of Alekhine, spend your money on something else

Nice collection of games, sketchy analysis.

Unless you collect chess books, I don't feel that this book is a must. The book has two pros: price and nice collection of games (Most of the games in the book were NOT played by Alekhine).

But in my view, it's biggest con is depthless and lip-deep analysis. Don't buy this book if you are looking to understand Alekhine's thought process or looking for some instructional material.

Alekhine's sparse comments certainly help, but your should have a pretty good chess knowledge in order to get the most out of this book.

Dover produces fine books. As for me I don't mind descriptive notation which turns off a lot of potential customers. But here they have the best efforts of a World Champion and it is in algebraic notation, and has clear diagrams. Some of the games fall short of top drawer play, hence I deducted 1 star, but otherwise this is excellent chess and fine commentary by Alekhine. There is also a tribute to his old Nemesis Capablanca. Altogether a must for any player's library

The middle ground.

Though this book has a few chess gems to be enjoyed by everyone, this book isn't for the mere beginner. Sometimes it isn't even for the average player. Alekhine's annotations are thorough, for the most part, but are often tinged with either mocking condescension or complete blase. He tacitly assumes that certain tactical or strategic ideas are obvious, and therefore fails from time to time in teaching the reader anything. The games are often interesting, though, again, not for the player interested in only an occasional game. This is a relatively good book if you have enough experience and can study it deeply, but if you are looking for a book of instruction, look elsewhere.

This guide really is not very well done. It's full of mistakes and typos, the information is inconsistent throughout the book, the maps are cut down some, it's just not well organized. If you're looking for details about managing your troops, weapons and items, and general character information, this is NOT the book for you. I also found the strategy suggestions useless.

I got this guide after I had beaten Ogre Battle already w/ max reputation and high ailignment/charisma (which isn't hard to do and there is certainly no secret to achieving) expecting to find information on all the secret treasures that the documentation that came with the game hinted at. Instead, this guide basically regurgitates all the information on the huge item sheet (which isn't at all helpful) and doesn't reveal anything really secret. The only useful information it provides is the stats/recruitments of the various classes/species and the locations of treasures/hidden towns on the maps (though most of which can be found easily w/o the guide). All in all this is a mediocre strategy guide as far as prima guides go and I wouldn't recommend buying it since you can find all the info on classes and treasures at webpages. You might as well save your money for a more worthwhile guide. The lack of color and the "Ogre Battle Gallery" that seemed like a pathetic attempt to make up for this lack of color bumped this from 3 to 2 stars.

let me make this clear for anyone that doesn't know this already,ITS MILSIM TO THE MAX. Now don't get me wrong milsim is great and if you like milsim GET THIS BOOK NOW, but if you don't like milsim or don't play milsim (like me) find another book. now if you think you will get into milsim, GET THIS BOOK NOW, but if you wont you pretty much won't get anything out of this book ( maybe a little but nothing you can't get off the Internet). it's a great book for any milsimer but if your not, please don't get this book. it goes over hand signals and thats about it for regular airsoft/paintball play. to leave on a happy note this book is very informative and well organized ( for the right person that is ) it also has a glossary/ army dictionary in the back that I thought was very cool. thanks for reading!!

After reading the book I knew I'd found what I'd been longing to
see someone take the time to put out. This book transforms those
need to know concepts and tactics which have taken the military
hundreds of years to perfect into terms just about any dedicated
MIL-SIMer can relate to. Topics like how to create your own SOI,
to what to do when things don't work as planned add up to a book
that's sure to have a very positive impact on your performance at
that next scenario or FTX.

Excellent addition to your library!

I received this book 1 months ago. When I knew this book is written by Christopher Larsen, I know that this indeed would be the definitive guide to any airsoft or paintball player. If you don't understand what I mean, Chris Larsen is also the author of the book "Light Infantry Tactics: Small Teams", which already is a reference book for many airsoft players (..and quite possible, for real soldiers too).

Many materials in "Paintball and Airsoft Battle Tactics" are derived from "Light Infantry Tactics...", but adjusted with airsoft & paintball players in mind. Nevertheless, the tactics and the battle-drills are the same regardless of whether you are fighting a real battle or just a wargame. The only difference are: the range of the weapons (and "weapons") and the lethality (and "lethality") involved are of course incomparable.

Some of the materials in the book include: why and how to camouflage, handsignals techniques, leadership skills, infantry movement techniques, and battledrills for offensive, defensive and special operations. The methods explained typically apply to unit size from fireteam to platoon level. What this book differs from "Light Infantry Tactics" is on the emphasis to airsoft & paintball, taking into account the characteristics of both games. It also has a lot more schemes and color photographs which is very helpful in understanding the concepts.

One of the many things I like very much from this book, is that it's written in an easily understood language to explain technical military concepts (if you ever read military references such as US Army Field Manuals etc, they usually tends to be heavily conceptual or technical AND voluminious- which can be quite intimidating to some). However there is some areas in this book that needs an improvement: a discussion about "human factor". I wish it had another chapter which discusses the human factor such as: morale, overcoming hesitation and fear, how to motivate teammates - a very critical element to mission success.

Nonetheless, this book surely enhances our understanding on how to fight and how to fight as a team. Discuss and practice the materials with your teammates, and your team will benefit in battle.

Verdict: an excellent addition to your library.

Good information, but a tad disappointing

I also bought the book, Light Infantry Tactics: For Small Teams, by the same author. I found his Infantry book to be very good, but I found that this book leaves something to be desired. It's all about the promise and delivery.

The book is supposed to be for paintball and airsoft, yet it seems to do little more than re-package military tactics with a different cover.

No don't get me wrong. It's good information, and can be VERY well used, with some adaptation. But the pictures show regular LCE/LBE harnesses, not paintball vests. No pictures show airsoft or paintball safety masks in use, and a great deal of tactics are not applicable in most scenario paintball or airsoft games. They're simply too complicated for players who don't train week after week. For the players who DO, however, this information can go a LOOOONG way.

If the book had discussed the tactical differences between the military doctrine and paintball/airsoft, I think the book's value could have been tripled, if not more.

For the team leader who can adapt such things without much outside direction, this book goes miles. For those who cannot, this book may not do much without outside help.

Uninspired here just doesn't get the point of battletech. Don't be discouraged by his careless unthoughtprovoking arguement. Battletech is a great game for those who love roleplaying but hate investing hour upon dreary hour on their characters. It is exciting and just like Vegas "its all in the dice." So if you are interested in an great game where you get the blow the ---- out of stuff check out battletech. Available in any fine comics store.

Battletech is a tacky and slow giant robot style strategy game that is rapidly being outmoded by software that does so much more than this. Even though this game is pathetically slow - just building your own mech takes at least an hour, there is still that feel that the game presents too few things to make the gameplay interesting. Why? Because everything has to be done by hand, and this game involves a ton of calculations. You would be better advised to take your business elsewhere, or even better choose a genre that does not so gladly succumb to slowdown.

A real review of Battlepack: Fourth Succession War
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-06
There were so many inconsistencies about this product that I felt the need to provide an actual review of it, rather than some rant about having to think and read instead of simply watching pretty pictures on a computer screen.

The first correction that should be made is the actual title of this product is "Battlepack: Fourth Succession War". Also the cover picture is incorrect.

Battlepack: Fourth Succession War is a beginner's scenario pack designed for use with the BattleTech, Fourth Edition boxed game. This pack and the main game are all that is needed to play.

The 10 scenarios included allow the player to take part in some of the most interesting battles of the Fourth Succession War and are based on events in Michael Stackpole's excellent novel series, the Warrior Trilogy originally released in 1988-98 and released by ROC in 1998. Like the many other scenario books from FASA each scenario includes extensive situational information setting up and explaining the places, units and reasons behind the conflict often in the form of a story, communications transcript or diary entry from one of the combatants. Scenario rules and setups are next up, which include detailed stats of the units involved, maps needed, victory conditions and special rules for the game about to be played. Sadly missing however are the `After Action' reports of earlier scenario packs that gave insight into how the actual battle ended.

It should be noted that all maps, counters, dice, and pre-filled `Mech Record Sheets are included with this Battlepack or in the BattleTech, Fourth Edition boxed game, so there's no need to spend hours building your own `Mech, which is one of the joys of the BattleTech game system.

Also included with this game are 8 "new" `Mechs such as the FSS-H Firestarter and STK-3F Stalker. While these `Mechs originally appeared in earlier BattleTech products, they are "new" to Fourth Edition of BattleTech. Each comes with a pre-filled Record Sheet, Technical Readout styled manufacturer information and commentary and a good quality cardboard counter. 20 counters in all are supplied; they are similar to the earlier "rectangle" versions of BattleMech counters, not the stylized "shaped" versions included with Fourth Edition. A new BattleTech Map, Woodlands, is also in this pack. Printed heavy paper, this map consists of three scattered hills (the largest having a level 3 peak) surrounded mostly by light woods with a few heavy woods. It's a good map, with a different graphic style from the others of the BattleTech series. The backside of the map is a simple white hex pattern, giving players another blank map to design their own terrains.

Plenty of backstory and history is included throughout the Battlepack. First up are biographies of 8 of the most important historical figures of the Succession Wars, such as Prince Hanse Davion, Archon Katrina Steiner and Coordinator Takashi Kurita. Following that are four pages of history, which explains the key events from 3020 to 3028 that led to the Fourth Succession War. The back cover of the Battlepack has a color-coded map of the Successor States circa 3028, along with the emblems of each State, including Wolf's Dragoons, a mercenary group which played an important role during the war.

Randall N. Bills, author of this Battlepack and now BattleTech line designer for FASA, has crafted a wonderfully simple to use and fun scenario pack with tons of background. Bringing the player into the BattleTech universe has always been an important part of any BattleTech product, and this product does so excellently.

Battlepack: Fourth Succession Wars is perfect for new players, introducing them to the wonderful history of BattleTech that FASA has been designing for the past 14 years. While it in set in the "old days" of the Fourth Succession War, the final scenario does give a hint of things to come by introducing some higher level technology such as double-heat sinks, technology which is expanded on in other BattleTech products such as CityTech boxed game and First Strike!, the other beginners scenario packet I'd highly suggest for new players. First Strike includes later history up-to and including the Clan invasion and tons of tactics and information to help players get the most out of their BattleTech game.

This series of books{only the chapter books in this series} is different than any other little kids chapter books{ that I know of at least} that have black and white pictures in them. This series has not only black and white pictures, but also some color pictures, too. Not only that, but it also has a postcard on the back. When I watched Digimon before{ I still do, but not as much}, I always thought that before Kari came { or at least close to when she came}, the first season was kinda boring, and this book is definately boring. The second season{ the whole thing} was way better than this, along with the whole third and fourth season. If you're a big fan of Digimon and 8 years and younger, this book may be a good choise. But if you're not a Digimon fan, and older than 8, you probely won't like this.

Leomon's Challenge is where they meet up with Devimon, and they also battle more black gears. The first story is where the kids debate wether to go up to the top of Infinity Mountain or not. But when they're sleeping, Joe goes to the top of the mountain, only to meet a Unimon with a black gear. Read the rest yourself.

The next story is where the kids are on the top of the mountain, and then they decide to walk to nowhere. But then a Digimon named Leomon finds the kids, and he's infected by Devimon's touch of evil. And then Ogremon attacks, only he's just plain bad, so he doesn't need a touch of evil. There's too mouch to say, so read this exciting book.

This book does help out, but the major thing I think it lacks is maps. In the guides before it (BN4 & BN5) they would have a section in the back of the book with full maps of each major area, including what viruses were there, where each mystery data was and where it was, and the location of each Navi ghost.(If there was one there) However, no such section in this one. One nice surprise I thought this book did have was a seperate section for number codes and compression codes. Overall, it's a good book but Maps would have made it so much better.

New York and Lyons: the two arenas of the last contest for the World Chess Championship between the two greatest names in chess today. The Champion: charismatic Garry Kasparov, the youngest ever holder of the title and possibly the greatest player in history. The Challenger: Anatoly Karpov, World Champion for 11 years before Kasparov took his crown, and the record-breaking winner of over 80 top class tournaments. Already, these two giants of the chessboard had faced each other a record 120 times in World Championship play, from the controversial unfinished marathon of 1984-5 to the nail-biting tied contest of 1987 Now they met once more, and in this detailed account Grandmaster Raymond Keene, one of the world's foremost chess writers, describes the action both on and off the board. Every game is analysed in depth, allowing you to follow the match exactly as it happened. It's the next best thing to being there!
Raymond Keene is a British Chess Champion, and the first British Player to achieve a FIDE (World Chess Federation) Grandmaster norm. He was awarded the OBE for services to chess in 1985. He is Chess Correspondent of The Times,The Sunday Times,The Spectator, and The International Herald Tribune. He is a prolific author of chess books, several of which are classics of the genre. He has organised three World Chess Championships.
