I saw this exhibition recently at the Hirshorn in Washington and it was phenominal. This book has a few extra images that weren't in the show. The book is printed in landscape diameter which is a good choice given Louis' paintings, all 28 of which are reproduced in lavish color. The book spans his entire mature career, offering several examples of each of his different There are also three new essays on Louis by Klaus Kertess, Alexander Nemerov, and Shepherd F. Steiner.

Academic but laid out so well that it is a pleasant and informative read for non-academics. Well researched and illustrated, in easy-to-follow chapters. The notes and references are excellent too, but it is the layout that is exceptional.

Norman Bluhm, Art Hero
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-17
It was my priviledge to have known Norman near the end of his life. As I studied his work more I began to understand the heroic tenancity behind it. The critic Harold Rosenberg predicted for the art world that the new tradition would be the tradition of the new. As odd as it sounds, the aimless quest for the "new" and "different" has become the establishment. Artists like Bluhm courageously stayed the course during all this and paid a price for it. Jim Harithas brings this truth to the reader in his essay. He helps us to understand that Norman took the Abstract Expressionist approach to painting to "a new level by expanding its spiritual meaning and cultural potential." "Bluhm established his own aesthetic priorities and intensified the spiritual content of his painting by perfecting his own gesture and living a life as an artist that tolerated no compromise." Harithas also helps us to understand the purpose behind the work - to create paintings that express spiritual vision "truthfully, with style and high drama." This is what art is all about! The summation of the essay strikes right to the core of the matter. An artist must survive the commercialim of the current art world and endure the lonliness of the outsider and there are few that can. Those that succeed, as Norman did, are the art heros. The benefit of that heroism will be reaped by future generations.

Anybody can enjoy experimenting with abstract art. It doesn't matter if you have never been able to master perspective, or take a decent portrait - or even if you have never thought of yourself as "artistic" at all. Ronald Pearsall's lively text, drawing on his own experience and illustrations as well as those of the great names in abstract art, encourages you to jump in at the deep end and enjoy creating pictures for yourself.

So what exactly is abstract painting? It is a convenient term for nonrepresentional art, which may be inspired either by themes in the outside world (whether intangible concepts or concrete objects) and contain references to these themes, or by nothing more than an interesting pattern of shapes and colours. Why do people paint abstracts? Because they like doing it; because it suits their temperament. An abstract work can be spontaneous, an explosion of energy, or meticulously worked out and executed. It is up to you - there are no rules unless you choose to make them.

All that is needed are a few basic materials and the willingness to have a go - PAINTING ABSTRACT PICTURES will encourage you to try out colours and combinations, play with shapes, experiment with opils, watercolour, pastels and acrylics, and turn doodles into works of art.

Lavishly illustrated with photographs!!!!!

It's not easy to find writing on Heron or repoductions of his work but this book about covers it all. Examines the artist's art and life and how they relate. Wonderful repoductions of work throughout a long career---every phase is represented. A great tool for artists studying Heron's work or the average art lover. Gooding's text is very accessible.

This small book, a collection of all the posters Picasso ever produced, is a fascinating addition to any art lovers library. Picasso's embrace of the poster, which is the modern precursor of mass advertisement, seems to cement his place as one of the most important artistic figures of this century. Page after page reveals Picasso's sensitivity and creativity even towards subjects as seemingly mundane as pottery fairs. His peace posters are unrivalled in their simplicity, yet they manage to convey both the importance and the fragility inherent in any call to peace. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and am confident any art appreciator will too.

Review Date: 2005-09-02
The Maestro, as Picasso was known to his intimates, excelled in his ability to heighten perception of the ordinary through the inevitable ways he transformed it. So many periods of modern art passed before his eyes and hands, he both spanned the generations and inspired generations to come.

His interest in the mundane, the unnoticed, drove a passion to transform objects we'd never think about - a bicycle seat, a chair, sticks and stones - all of which inform this wonderful collection.

As always: modern art is what you make of it. Picasso succeeded as few have before or since, in elevating ordinary objects to the realm of magical emblems that stimulate our collective imagination and desire for transformation.

I really was relieved to have found this book on Amazon and that it could be expressed delivered. All the other places I looked gave me a 2 week wait. I needed the book right away since I started my class late and homework was due like in 2 days!! I also liked that I can keep track of the entire delivery process. I was at work and I decided to see at what time my book was possibly going to be here. I looked and I saw through the tracking section of your products that my book was waiting for me on my front door. I went home and it was carefully hidden so that nobody can take my package. Thank you so much and I plan on using Amazon.com in the fture!
