Galois Theory in the British Didactic Style: a gem.

Anyone who has at least perused the works of Hardy, Dirac, Swinnerton-Dyer, or any of their suit will know what I mean. There is something unmistakable about this style: pithy, perhaps to a fault, but without any loss of charisma, these authors sacrifice conversational ease for surveyability and structural integrity. With this book, Garling takes a place in the rich British tradition of mathematical artistry.
This is a pretty short book, and while it covers somewhat more than bare-minimum (the ch. on transcendental extensions is unusually deep, for example) it does not aspire to as complete a coverage as something like Dummit and Foote would give. But while theirs is an excellent "standard reference" type text, Garling conveys as much about craftsmanship and mathematical aesthetic as he does about fields and galois groups. This matching of topic and style of course works incredibly well, and here again we find a rich tradition of beautiful exposition (*cough* Artin).
Of course, I shouldn't neglect to mention my favorite part of any text (endeavor?): the problems. Here again Garling displays excellent taste ("Remember that mathematics is not a spectator sport!"). His rule of thumb is to can the (sometimes) dozens of trivial problems commonly presented, opting rather for a choice few interesting and challenging ones. I certainly learn better from this approach - perhaps more importantly, I have a lot more fun. Mathematics is for those with unrealistic daring, tempered
by a dedication so extreme as to make the former at worst asymptotically realistic.

A landmark publication in the history of modern art surveys, this book was written by Alfred Barr, then director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, in 1936. (A paperback re-issue appeared in 1974.) Intended as a primer for the lay reader, the book is nevertheless an insightful survey of virtually all the important modern artists and movements to have appeared on the world stage up until that time, and Barr speaks from the vantage point of someone who personally knew and had exhibited many of the artists discussed. Barr covers, however succintly, a broad terrain with the inclusion of architecture, film, and photography, in addition to painting and sculpture, and traces the development of modern art from its roots in Impressionism to the then-current Surrealism. The book is noteworthy for its inclusion of the famous chart detailing the influences and divergences of the various styles, much like a rendition of one's ancestors on a family tree, and for the categorization of artists and styles into two broadly opposing groups: the expressionist vein, begun by Gauguin and continued by the Fauves, German Expressionists, Dadaists and Surrealists; and the conceptual vein, initiated by Cezanne and continued by Cubism, Constructivism, and De Stijl. The chosen artists, names of styles or movements in which they participated, and the canonical works they produced have remained remarkably stable, despite the ever-shifting, multi-faceted defintions of modern art, as important examples of modern works across the distance of nearly seventy years after the book's first release. Additionally, Barr offers definitions of terms such as "abstract," as well as discussions of techniques like collage.

A multitude of reproductions completes this highly readable and comprehensive account of the often bewildering and competing strands of modern art.

Though written as an exhibition catalog for a show that took place almost 70 years ago, Alfred H. Barr, Jr.'s Cubism and Abstract Art is still the most concise, yet at the same time penetrating analysis and explication of the various movements and history that contributed to the abstract art of the period before the Second World War. It is both a fine introduction to the topic and, at least in my opinion, among the best resources available to the serious student of modern art.

A very important tool for building relationships

This is a very well written and thought out guide to building a relationship. We were given our first copy by the pastor of our church. Each partner needs their own copy, and I found it worthwhile enough to purchase the second one. The chapter on communication is probably the most important chapter and brings up a lot of good points. This book is geared towards a faith based relationship, however, despite the books name, even those who don't have a strong christian faith should find this book is not preachy.

Mr. Shannon has diligently reviewed 100 of the finest baseball books written since 1948. He has clearly understood the core themes of each volume and communicates in no uncertain terms his critique of author's writing style and comprehensiveness of the book in question. Mr. Shannon is hard working, conscientious, and has a vast empire of knowledge about modern baseball books, both fiction and non-fiction. If the book has one weakness, it is the absence of titles prior to 1948. I would hope Mr. Shannon will write a sequel to this tome which would review baseball classics in the "Dark Ages" of baseball literature.

Seuphor's comprehensive survey of abstract art up to the early 1960's is an absolute must for all lovers of 20th Century art. It is hoped that an enterprising publisher, such as Taschen, say, will consider reprinting this volume. There are many artists listed here who have been unjustly forgotten, and the color illustrations are excellent and beautifully incorporated with the text. This essential volume will give all lovers of abstract art much to ponder, consider, and enjoy.

An Important and Groundbreaking Book

Kobena Mercer has long been an important figure in the world of cultural theory and identity politics. He has more recently turned his attention to the fine art object itself. In this groundbreaking book Mercer and a range of other art historians and scholars examine the place of the black artist in the fine art arena. Contrary to art history artists of the African diaspora have played an ongoing and important role in advancing the high art paradigm of painting. Abstraction does not only mean Jackson Pollock! Here Mercer and his critical cohorts examine the role that black artists have played and continue to play in making painting and abstraction an engaging and meaningful conceptual practice.
