My daughter loved this book for months. We started reading it to her when she was about 6 months old (or younger) and by 12 months she was identifying many of the animals and colors along with us. At 19-months its not her favorite book, but she still asks us to read it from time to time.

Simple, engaging, beautiful illustrations, genuis rhyming pattern that makes sense, and gets child excited to turn the page to see what's next. A teacher's and parent's dream. Just a wonderful book that is engaging and teaches words/sounds. Doesn't get better than this.

We've used this for learning colors, rhyme and animals. It's predictable so even the youngest can figure out what comes next. We often sing a song with it and use a flannel story as well.

Every young child should have this book read to them over and over again.

Great introduction to No Limit Hold'em Tournaments

This is a well written and clear description of the basics of no limit hold'em tournament play. If you are a beginner like me you'll have tons of great information on how to play the first levels of a tournament. Examples are well chosen to give you an insight to how to react to different scenarios. The book gives you good advice on when to bet and how much to bet.

The information is well explained and easy to understand. I'm sure that anyone wishing to develop his tournament skills will benefit from reading this book. Maybe this is not the perfect first poker book to read, but if you have some experience on tournaments and Texas hold'em and want to take your game to next level this is perfect choice. If you're an experienced tournament player you probably know this stuff already.

This book covers the early stages of tournaments and I think the vol. 2 of this series is about the later phases of the game. I'm currently waiting for the next part to arrive for I wish to learn how to proceed to the final rounds and bigger prizes.

Very good food for thought

This is an excellent book. The writing is clear and uncluttered, and the material well-organized and thoughtfully presented.

The best part of the book is the many, many, many examples that describe certain situations and then ask you what is the "right" action given the circumstances. Even if you don't agree with Harrington's approach in every case, he frames the problems and issues well and forces you to question your intuition in various situations. It's a very fun book for anyone who both loves poker and who is willing to tolerate a little math.

I purchased this book due to all the good reviews. This book is written well with some info that is good for people do not know concepts like pot valves and counting how many outs your hand has. I feel that most people who play at a higher level may find this book not to be much help if they play at an advanced level. I like Slansky's books a little more and are a little more involved. Not a bad book , but not what I was looking for.

In the book The Soulforge, by Margret Weis, Raistlin Majere has battled through every bit of his life. He barely made it through birth and is a sickly child. His twin brother Caramon, is the better liked, while Raistlin stays a home. Raistlin wants to do and become something great in life. He has been always interested in magic. One day an arch magus stops in the small town of Solace. He talks to Raistlin and sees that the young boy at the age of six has great potential. The book follows the life of Raistlin with his struggles and triumphs.
I think that this book is awesome. It is the best book I have read and I will recommend it to whoever loves fantasy and who is searching for a great read. I would rate this a 10/10.

Raistlin Majere has always been my favorite Dragonlance character but this story of his early years was severely lacking. Wrapped in an air of mystery and hacking away with a deadly consumption, this young mage was protected both by his powerful brother and by his cloak of mystery. His ambition, curiosity and sleight of hand earns your interest like no other but he needed a more developed background to fill that vaccuum. I will still love the red robed mage but I might have to accept that his run as a great character ended in a Summer Flame.

I bought this book because it had such high reviews. Needless to say, I was disappointed. I think that M.W. has a good writing style, but the story lacks any pizazz. The characters are boing and predictable. Why did so many people like this book?

Margaret Weis comes to the fore

This is the first book I read by Margaret Weis without Hickman, and I was therefore interested to see the difference. Actually, the pace of the book is slower and more introspective than the Chronocles series. I would regard this book as "canon" and part of the essential story (along with Chronocles trilogy, Lost Chronocles trilogy, Legends trilogy, Second Generation, Dragons of A Summer Flame, and the War of Souls Trilogy).

FACT - Weis and Hickman are not literary geniuses. They flout several rules of good writing including their tendency to repeat ideas, recap plot points, tell you what to think (instead of showing you). However, there are few writers who can claim to have explored the depth of a character to the same extent as Weis does with Raistlin in this book. A great addition to the series.

If you want to go on and read Brothers in Arms, then do so, however, I would not consider it canon or essential to the story. However, it does give some of the background to the War of the Lance from the point of view of Kitiara, and is (reasonably) consistent with the storyline in the chronocles trilogy.

One point I would like to note - if you read dragons of autumn twilight straight after this, you will find that Raistlin's relationship with some of the other characters has "soured" somewhat, despite the fact the characters have supposedly not seen each other for five years. I found this a little unconvincing but this is a minor detail.

"Raistlin startled to wakefulness, a sense of danger bursting like lightning on his sleep, jolting him out of terrifying dreams." Oh Boy. Hemmingway this is not.

With the new Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition coming out my old dungeon master (just writing that makes me cringe) has decided to try and reunite distant (and aging) gamers using the new online gaming engine. In order to get into the spirit of things I thought I might spend some time back in the realm of D&D. When I was in high school every self respecting nerd had read the DragonLance series by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Quite frankly my taste in literature was still developing back then but the books seemed fine and I enjoyed all three. The most memorable character, by far, was the mage Raistlin Majere. One of my friends even modeled his D&D character after Raistlin including his relentless (and irritating) pursuit of power.

It's pretty clear by this books intro that Raistlin is also Margaret Weis's favorite and this is likely what doomed the book for me. As intriguing as Raistlin is I was hoping for more than to read about his elementary school years, his handling of bullies and his mildly dysfunctional family. The author also goes way overboard trying to hammer home the point that Raistlin is the dark brooding brains and his twin Caramon is the strong, good looking dolt. It's sometimes difficult for adults to write dialogue for children but this one is pretty bad. No five year old on earth has ever talked the way young Raistlin does and in trying to make little Caramon sound simple and naïve Weis basically writes him as retarded.

I just didn't feel that D&D vibe reading this book. The story was so focused on Raistlin that there was barely anytime for anything else and quite frankly most of the book was rather boring and tedious which isn't helped by its 400+ page length. Raistlin still stands above the rest but mainly because Kitiara and Tasselhoff were so bloody annoying while Sturm, Tanis and Flint were less like characters and more like empty ciphers.

While a bad ending can kill a good book a good ending is less likely to redeem a mediocre book but it does help and the ending in Soulforge is by far the best part. Still, rather than rekindle my interest in D&D the book ended up dampening it. If you want a good fantasy book I suggest the Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. It's not D&D but the characters are significantly better.

LEARN CHESS: Made easy with all the material you need!
Helpful Votes: 101 out of 105 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-29
Want to learn chess? If you are an absolute beginner or someone who has mastered the very basic skills then look no further! CHESS FOR JUNIORS will do the job for you. Yes, I am into advertising, but not as a profession for this book (if you know "Mr. Clean", "Hey, Mikie likes it" or "Where's the Beef" I was the person who made this possible on national TV". OK, you have got it! I am an old timer writing about a book with the "Youth Market" in mind. But then why has it been since it publication date of 1991 the #1 best selling chess book? It is GOOD, VERY GOOD!

-->

WHY:

1. VERY CLEAR (Mr. Clean can see everything)
2. VERY UNDERSTANDABLE (an 8-year-old or older name Mikie will like it)
3. LOTS OF MATERIAL (you will not be left saying, "where is the beef!")
4. WELL ORGANIZED (just like a "box of chocolate" - I was involved in that too!)
5. BEST SELLER (couldn't be all that bad! - it is ranked as #1)

-->

SOME THINGS I LIKE:

1. If you are using this book to teach someone who doesn't know a thing about chess (maybe you or your kid or your student?) then it starts off assuming no knowledge (everyone was once a beginner)
2. Once you finish you can go back and find almost every important term or concept in the index (doesn't require a college education to find something - Gommer Pyle would find what he wants!)
3. Written in a mature manner that an old guy will appreciate, yet the humor that kids will like in the book offers a perfect balance to make this a book for anyone who can read. (must only be beyond the reading level of - see spot run, run spot run)

-->

HOW:

1. You have ordered here before (go for it you button pusher!)
2. New, Used, or a Collectible Autographed Copy (like I have - I try and get whatever I can autographed just click on the right button of your choice)

Now I absolutely love this book. My grandkids, parents and I all have a copy and so should you. Next time you are watching TV and see a commercial, or see the author's students "Will Smith" or "Nicolas Cage", then you will be reminded of this particular book!

NEW REVISED EDITION: Should be worth waiting for!

I run two after school chess programs at elementary schools and use "Chess for Juniors" as the text book. At first I was disapointed to see that this book has become difficult to get (if you can get a used copy grab it!). However, I found out is is going through a complete revision and will be a second edition when released later this year (as well as the entire "Chess for Juniors" series of books, including some new ones to be released).
"Chess for Juniors" is the perfect text book for teachers who are running a class for elementary age students on up (yes, it is suitable for a class for adults) beginning with an introduction to the basic rules and leading into a lot of basic material on strategy found in all aspects of the game.
What I found that sets "Chess for Juniors" (and the entire series) in a class by itself is the readability (ease of understanding the material) and comprehensiveness of the book.
Whereas, a 3rd grade reader of average reading skill can understand it, it is not going to insult an adult who wants to learn from it. It is is structured so any teacher conducting a class can easily follow the building lessons (it provides the perfect format for a ready-made class outline!).
Please hurry with the second edition!!!

Will get the next edition in addition to the copy I have

I got this book a couple of years ago and now am chess club presendent at my school chess club in 7th grade. I loaned it out so many times it is getting worn out.

When I went to get a copy now I found out it is temporarily not in print because it is going to be made a new edition. I plan to get the new edition for the chess club.

What I liked about this book is that it isn't a silly little kids picture book. It teaches serious material using an easy to understand method by making the language basic enough and organizing it in an order to make it learning friendly. It would be good for anyone who can read as well as an average third grader right on up to adults. The index in the back makes it easy to find things and relook things up like terms, openings and rules.

Everyone in the school chess club likes it and uses it for continued reference even after having read it. I think this is the best first book for kids and adults.

New and improved release with new title "Chess for Everyone"

I wanted to let people know that this top-selling chess book is now available under the title "Chess for Everyone: A Complete Guide for the Beginner". It has been updated and improved. The improvements include adding opening information, more detailed explanations at critical points and a less cramped, easier to read format. It is extremely complete in covering everything that a beginner needs to know to take him/her to the next level. It is a great book for students in grade 4 on up to adult. It is well organized and very suitable for textbook use by chess teachers. It uses a building format where lessons expand on material thorughout the twenty graduated lessons. It is one of only a few "beginner" books that are part of a comprehensive series that allows for direct follow-up material that is consistant. There are currently 5 books in print. In 2009, "Basic Chess Tactics: A Tactical Pattern Recognition Workbook for the Classroom" is scheduled for release. The "Chess for Everyone Teacher's Textbook Guide" is unlike any other teacher guide in that it provides lesson plans and information on how to teach chess to be used in conjunction with "Chess for Everyone".

"Chess for Juniors" is obviously the work of superb teacher whose mind and heart have fully committed themselves to the playing and teaching of chess over a number of years. It's perfectly organized and will turn any prospective or current player who carefully studies and absorbs its twenty lessons into a 1200-1300 player at least. I'm looking forward to diving into Snyder's "unbeatable Lessons" books if they're as valuable as this one.

Since I already knew the basics of chess before I bought this book, I was most interested in the approach Snyder took once he directed his readers on to the next step, since this is where introductory books on chess really show their true colors.
Snyder covers the pins/forks/skewers tactics as well as anyone, but the best part is the in-depth attention he gives to openings, defenses, and what he calls "Tactical Motifs." What this entails are insightful, detailed looks at the Ruy Lopez (the "Spanish") and Giuoco Piano (the "Italian") openings, and a group of the best-known gambits (From's, King's accepted and declined, Bishop sacrifices, Petroff's Defense). He also looks at those three to four-move checkmates like the Fool's and Scholar's--how they can be sprung on novice/unsuspecting opponents and how they can be avoided so easily if you develop the sound opening principles Snyder sets forth. If you play over and completely absorb all these openings and the basic variations as Snyder sets them down here, you'll develop a strong sense of space and begin to understand the tactical and strategic consequences of the moves you make.

Snyder also gives great explanations of some defensive responses, especially the Sicilian, the King's Indian and the Nimzo-Indian if you're playing black. The depth of Snyder's explanations is perfect, so that you learn what to do and why to do it without getting bogged down in needless details and variations. His lessons on King-Pawn, Queen and Rook endings are also perfectly set out. End games are essential of course but they are a bit dull to have to study. Again, I feel Snyder gives you just what you need to know so that you won't blow an end game with a loss, draw or stalemate when the use of a few core techniques could have made the game yours. Finally, there are a couple of instructive games which look especially at attacks on the weak f7/f2 squares and their outcomes, around which many wins or losses can revolve.

All in all, this is a superb beginner's book, either for youths or adults. I would say that there are other good ones out there too which can be fruitfully studied in conjunction with Snyder--the beginner's books by Yasser Seirawan (Play Winning Chess), John Nunn (Learn Chess), and I. A. Horowitz (Chess for Beginners). I do think it's shameful that many advocates of Snyder's fine work try to undermine these other works by pumping "Chess for Juniors" and pushing down all positive reviews of his competitors by marking these reviews "unhelpful." There seems to be some kind of strategy at work, since they always put Snyder's title in upper case letters, recommending it after they have put down the other work. Sometimes they won't even review the other work, but will just mention Snyder's. It all seems orchestrated. I'm sure an author and lover of chess such as Snyder must be too classy a man to advocate this kind of lowball campaign. Apparently his students are not.

Worried that she might be "too big" for a picture book, but she LOVED the story and was able to relate to it and find the deeper meaning, with her mom's guidance. I absolutely loved it and before going home, bought it for my 17 year old daughter. Since then I have written a Play along with music to match for our women to do in raising money for the next Womens Retreat. I totally, 100% recommend this book! Hats off to Max Lucado on a well written book!

DICE ANGEL is a thoroughly modern fable about an often inscrutable place. Las Vegas serves not just as a backdrop, but as a character, in this tale of IRS agents who play hardball, relatives who aren't who they say they are, and ex-wives exacting retribution. From cross-town traffic to cross-wise cops, author Brian Rouff colors a fast-paced story on an immovable deadline with insider Vegas facts. Will the unlikely heroine save the day . . . and the bar? After all, "baby needs a new pair of shoes." A great read for a Vegas-bound visitors.

I'm a native Las Vegan so it's nice to finally read an entertaining piece that really has it's finger on the pulse of the city.

Jimmy, the main character, is great. He reminds me of so many "transplants" in this city.

The characters are so intriguing that we want to know them better. I hope that this will become a series because one seldom encounters so pleasant a read. The narrative is honest and refreshing and he captures Vegas Noir with style and understanding. Cheers for this page turner of a novel.

I found this book and the only regret I have is that the book had to end. Brian Rouff has written a brilliant, hilarious, funny, insightful fictional account of a saloon owner in Las Vegas. Jimmy Delaney (the main character) has his life going the right way (though his ex-wife is no fan of him) when all of the sudden he finds his bank accounts emptied, his saloon broken into and an I.R.S. agent that goes by the book.

I laughed out loud at times while at other times I anxiously read awaiting another funny moment in the book. The plot is excellent and just when Jimmy Delaney's luck is over a "Dice Angel" enters his life and the book just gets even better. Can Jimmy raise the money needed to save his saloon? Will the crazy IRS agent win? Is the woman, the Dice Angel, the real deal? Can she REALLY help him out?

Trust me, find this book. Read this book and then ask, "Why hasn't this author written more books?" This book should be a movie and this author needs to write more books.

This is a revised edition of the book originally published in 2003. The main difference between this edition and the earlier one are:
1) The format has been changed to double column on the pages. This allows the explanations of the moves to be closer to the diagrams which accompany the explanations.
2} Some of the analysis has been updated and expanded to further help the student.
3) A result of the new format and slightly smaller print has been a saving of space (less white space per page}. Therefore, the new edition has the same number of games and explanation, but in under 200 pages. At less than 1/2 the thickness of the previous edition, it is much easier to carry.
4} A new edition gave the author a chance to correct many typographical errors and rephrase explanations to make for further clarity.

Like its predecessor, this book is for anyone (not just juniors) who want to understand why certain moves are played. Those who have read Irving Chernev's "Logical Chess: Move by Move" will be even more delighted with Mr. Snyder's book. Instead of the lengthy explanations that are repeated over and over again in Chernev's book, the book by Mr. Snyder gives the important information once at length and then relies of the reader to review if the explanation is needed again. When a move is a simple recapture he keeps the explanation to a short senctence. In the case of the opening moves being repeated in a later game, Snyder does not give the explanation again, but relies on the reader to refer back if explanation is needed. Half of the games are those of the author and half by other masters. Some important features of the book for students are:
1) Games are arranged by opening and thus start the player on developing an opening repretoire to play against opponents.
2) Analysis (i.e. alternate moves) is kept to the minimum needed to help the student gain understanding of what is happening and of alternate possibilities.
3) There are numerous diagrams (generally after every 3 or 4 moves) to help the student make sure of the correct position. And for stronger players it allows for them to read the book without the need of a board.
4) Explanation of moves are clear and concise. Anyone from about age 11 or 12 and up should have no trouble understanding the material.
I recommend this book for anyone who seriously wants to improve their play.

Good, but not the best book of its type

The idea of explaining the idea behind every move is a good. I wish that more books would do this for the Beginning and Intermediate level chessplayer.
There are several problems with this book; 1) The book is overly focused on the opening - it should spend more time going into the middlegame and endgame, and 2) It often would not answer the questions I had about a move or what was going on it the game, and 3) half the games are of the author, who is only a measly master. However, overall I can still recommend this book.
This book does not compare in quality to my favorite book, "Logical Chess, Move by Move, which just recently was updated."

I really enjoyed reading Unbeatable Chess Lessons For Juniors. I felt that I gained a lot of knowledge especially in the following areas,
a) Learning how to build an attack. The placement of your pieces and planning aheady.
b) Learning how to use sacrifices and to recognize when they work and do not work.
c) Positional play - manuvering your pieces and planning the use of Pawn structures.
d) Many tactical ideas were covered.
e) Learning the openings. The openings in the complete games are well covered with important opening lines being show. The games are organized by the type of openings being used. This makes it easy to study openings. The lines being shown are up to date and very accurate.
f) There are not a lot of endgames but the ones covered are very instructive. What I like is to see how plans were made to get to the winning endgame right from the opening! This book then gives a step by step explaination of how to win the endgame.
Some special features I liked about Unbeatable Chess Lessons For Juniors,
a) You are asked to find the best move. This forces you to think and makes for fun problems to solve out of games. This is much different than most books.
b) All the moves are analyzed.
c) General rules are pointed out. But, what makes it really nice is when the exceptions to the general rules happen, they are pointed out.
I like the nice easy flowing style of the author. For a person who already knows the very basic stuff about chess this book is just right. This is because there is both a review of important ideas and a depth of analysis making this book interesting for a more advanced player as well. The author uses a lot of his own game where he has used them in chess lessons with his own students. This makes the explaination very clear and things that only an experienced chess teacher knows need to be covered are right there. I have read some of the other reviews which have been helpful to me in being able to point out some of things that I agree with.
If you really love chess and like to study to improve this book is good for any age. But it is written so a 6th grader can understand it.
I understand that this book is going through a new printing correcting any typos and may be hard to get for a while. It would be worth waiting for if you cannot get it now or even getting a used copy for now.

Already familiar with some of the history of how animation began, I was looking forward to reading this. Within the first 10 pages, I learned how much I love the author and his passion to animate inspired me to just flip through the pages to see what was coming as I read. Wow. This book is full of examples, history, more inspiration and what looks to be a profound experience.

What a book!

Lots of detailed information about animation.

In The Animator's Survival Kit, Richard Williams shares valuable information that he has gleaned during his many years of working in animation. He explains how to achieve the motion you want in your animation with drawings that show a character's movement frame by frame. These are details that other books on animation just gloss over and leave you to learn on your own through trial and error. He delves into various ways to express real personality in your characters with nuances of movement and facial expressions. He is an amazingly talented animator who learned from the greats in the industry, and his insight into the great animators and animation companies with whom he has worked is fascinating. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is seriously interested in character animation.

I don't know what's the problem between AMAZON and this book.

I order it over THREE MOUNTHS, and never received it. After a few weeks, I receive a mail from AMAZON asking me to wait more than the initial estimations. 2 mounths later AMAZON managed a replacement order for it, but I never receive a book.

I have not received anything in Madrid but excuses, although the adress is correct, and I receive daily many packages, letters, comunications, etc. coming all around the world.

it is great

Inspiring Deck

I own many tarot and oracle decks. I love this deck for its artwork. Its is inspiring and optimistic. Certain cards feel a bit stupid like the nothing card and schizophrenia. The booklet can help tarot beginners.

I use my intuition so much, I threw the book and went with the feel I got overall to give a reading. It worked better for me that way. I must say, if you get only one deck (tarot) you might want to try something more traditional to learn tarot first. I bought this after I knew the tarot pretty thoroughly and was able to read from it.
If you want to meditate on positive things in life, this deck is useful for that. I have done that with good results, having a good meditation and better perspective on an issue.

A tarot out of this world

The Osho Zen Tarot, inspired by Osho and illustrated by Ma Deva Padma, is a transcendental take on Tarot. The images are literally out of this work, combining styles from manga-like illustrations to computer-enhanced images. This seemingly disjointed combination of styles works well for the diversity of messages expressed through the cards. This deck is not for beginners, as even the most versed on tarot may have problems using it. However, with the helpful companion book, this unique deck is a great source of inspiration for almost everyone to enjoy.

The imagery on these cards is too departed for comparison to most traditional tarots such as Visconti, Marseilles, RWS or even Thoth, but it does convey the message for the corresponding tarot card. A white border interrupted at the bottom by a white outlined diamond frames the imagery of each card. The diamond is color-coded within, and holds either a number or a symbol representing the card. Each card is labeled in English at the bottom.

For the Major Arcana, a roman numeral and color purple is shown within the small diamond at the bottom. The Fool and The Lovers retain their names, but all other Major Arcana has been relabeled to fit a Zen message:

The Magician -- Existence
The High Priestess -- Inner Voice
The Empress -- Creativity
The Emperor -- The Rebel
The Hierophant -- No-Thingness
The Chariot -- Awareness
Strength -- Courage
The Hermit -- Aloneness
Wheel of Fortune -- Change
Justice -- Breakthrough
The Hanged Man -- New Vision
Death -- Transformation
Temperance -- Integration
The Devil -- Conditioning
The Tower -- Thunderbolt
The Star -- Silence
The Moon -- Past Lives
The Sun -- Innocence
Judgment -- Beyond Illusion
The World -- Completion

This deck also includes an extra Major Arcana, The Master.

The Minor Arcana are labeled according to a key word and their number is shown within the diamond. The following shows the suits in this deck, their correspondence to traditional tarot, and color association:

Water - Cups - Blue
Fire - Wands - Red
Clouds - Swords - Grey
Rainbows -- -Pentacle - Rainbow

The Court Cards are also labeled according to a key word and a triangle pointing Up, Down, Right and Left shows within the diamond. These correspond to King, Queen, Knight and Page, respectively.

This deck is not for beginners, if it is to be used as a tarot. However, as a meditation tool, this deck is accessible for anyone. This deck comes with a companion book.

I used to use a set of Rider Waite cards but always found that they answered in a slightly group orientated way that always talked about people and their relationship to each other. I never felt that they were showing the behind the scenes reasons, just the people reasons. I looked and looked and found only tarot decks that spoke of people's problems with we each other.

A few years ago I purchased a set of your Osho Zen Tarot cards. On opening the pack I was immediately surprised to see that none of the cards spoke of blame, just the reader and situations. The cards show moments of stillness and honestly with myself, where the attention is not on other people and how they do things to me (as in other packs) but more of a 'me and my behind the scenes'. Your product has gently guided me to take responsibility for areas in my life for the better.

The artwork communicates where other packs have to be interpreted. Please pass on my heartfelt thanks to Ma Deva Padam for me for the phenomenal illustrations.

Thank you for publishing such a life changing product.

The art is incomparable. The four traditional suits are replaced by elements, so that might be a tad confusing, but not really once you get used to it. If the art is most important, get this. If you are used to the four traditional suits, you may want to pick another deck.

From the first chapter to the very end, Martha Frankel's voice is clear, strong, compassionate and funny. I loved reading about her relationship with her mother as much as finally figuring out the intricacies of poker play and how people become addicted.
The prose is down-to-earth and infectious. The last third of the book picks up speek as she describes her on-line dependancy and run-ins with the gamut of people who attend G.A. (gamblers anonymous) groups. Highly recommended.

Really good memoir I will no doubt reread

SPOILER ALERT - SPOILERS BELOW

This was a concise, funny, well-written memoir about one of my own hobbies (poker). I liked Frankel's writing style, down to earth and honest - most of all, it seems that she sees the humor in pretty much everything. The scenes of her parents and their friends are hilarious and touching, real and surreal (the part about Kevin and the balsamic vinegar had me laughing out loud).

When her gambling developed into an addiction to online poker, I was riveted. Then, I was annoyed (but not surprised) by the response of Gambling Anonymous. Finally, I was glad that Frankel still plays poker in her weekly game. Some people, no doubt, can never gamble again, just like alcoholics can never drink again, but Frankel was only addicted to online gambling. I'm glad she can still enjoy the game in real life.

I will never play online poker for money. Never. Well, maybe to get into the WSOP.

I laughed and cried..it was fabulous..Get it!

I bought the book because I know the author. Immediately, I was swept away and couldn't put it down. Knowing Martha just became an added bonus to a book I loved. I am hoping it will help me in my weekly poker game too! Thank you thank you! What a treat..

Having been given this book as a gift, I may not have chosen to read it on my own. But that is what makes life so wonderful. This book takes you on a journey in addiction, depression, and redemption, but does in a way that is both charming and engrossing. Frankel makes you feel like one of her best friends and she seems like such a cool chick. I'm a slow reader who often rereads many passages, I don't just read a book I have a relationship with it. This book became a great part of my life and I recommend it to anyone.

A Spellbinding Writer - A Passion for the Cards!

In this breezy, quick memoir, Martha Frankel pulls the reader into the world of her enterprising family, her bold childhood, and her adventurous adulthood. She is a little girl who sees the world through her father's eyes; at his side, she grows to be comfortable with numbers and learns to hold her own in the world of shrewd gamblers and risk takers, whether at the racetrack or the poker table. Still, she is always within the protective gaze of her mother and the strong women in her family. After her father dies, Frankel ventures forth, rather recklessly, into the world of men. However, when she becomes a writer, an assignment for a movie script she is working on takes her back to the place where she blossomed as a precocious and gifted little girl: the poker table. Frankel takes us on an engaging journey as she perfects her poker skills and falls in love with the game. Her passion for cards becomes a dangerous obsession and something she struggles and deals with, in earnest, as an addiction. This book ends far too soon and will leave you wanting more from this captivating author and her enthralling memoir.
