It Worked For Me!
Helpful Votes: 52 out of 57 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-25
I bought this book because I wanted to be able to use my PowerBook to access our office resources, which are 100 per cent Windows-centric. I've managed to avoid learning anything about networking in the past--at work, all of that's handled by others and at home, AppleTalk makes having to know anything optional. Lucky for me, I came across this book. It's well-organized and concise; I was able to find what I needed to know and skip over parts that weren't relevent. The book isn't bogged down in details--in many places, it simply points you in the right direction or at the right software solution. Within a week or so of buying this book, I was working almost seamlessly with our Windows stuff using my PowerBook!

De-Mystifying Macs
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-30
As the author of several excellent computer technology books, Michelle Robinette offers some timely and pertinent classroom help for instructors in her book, Macs for Teachers. Written in the same humorous, yet succinct, style as the other instructional books in the Dummies series, Macs for Teachers de-mystifies the many possible classroom computer applications that, in the past, have been only confusing. Interspersed with cartoons and personal observations, Ms. Robinette, uses a witty, understandable style of writing to clarify and simplify many difficult procedures that should aid in: Organizing and simplifying classroom records, through word processing, databases, and spreadsheets, using ClarisWorks (now AppleWorks); expanding students' expressive artistic and writing outlets using Kid Pix, The Writing Center, The Student Center, and The Print Shop Deluxe; providing easy accessibility to the Internet as a research, telecommunications, and educational tool; organizing the technological classroom to fit a variety of situations. Also available are a good glossary of key terms, a troubleshooting section (which I too often have to use), phone numbers for advice and help, and a huge section of annotated lists of educational software. With the added bonus of an attached, supportive CD, which includes demos and free software, this book package is well worth the price. Since this book is three years old now, published in 1997, my only reservation about the modern applicability of this edition is questioning if it is actually up-to-date, considering how quickly computer technology changes. I hope that this book will be updated with the inclusion of a broader spectrum of technology and terminology. However, all aspects of the book are presently still very usable and helpful for today's teacher and an excellent way to put technology to good use in the classroom.

One Book That Mac Fans Must Buy

Review Date: 1998-10-27
I find that "Macworld Mac and PowerMac secrets" shows me the coolest secrets and tricks of the Mac. The typical humor of Pogue and Schorr make this book the best. I have never read anything better than this book. I read it anywhere -- even in bed, lights off, torch on, browsing through the book, and occasionally giggling at the stupendous humor. If I was to go anywhere with only one Mac book, this would surely be it...thank you, David Pogue and Joseph Schorr! This is an excellent book I'd recommend to anyone!

A biased review.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-07
I'm reviewing this book when it has fallen out of print, which is probably for the best because my review is biased. You see, I edited this book. I worked with the author to develop the outline, I developed and copy-edited every chapter, and I sweated every detail on the galleys.

I've edited a number of computer books in the past six years, but none more satisfying than this one because *it's darn good.* Pogue writes extremely well, with charming humor. He knows his subject matter frontwards and backwards. He truly wants his books to be very well done and to serve readers well. Believe it or not, these are all rare traits among computer-book authors.

This book is a goldmine for "advanced beginners" and intermediate Mac users, giving them fast answers to the very usage questions they ask. It's not as comprehensive as Pogue's _Mac SECRETS,_ but it still packs in the information.

If you are trying to program in C for the Mac, and you don't have this book, then I feel sorry for you. :-) (Unless you are already a guru who recites chapter and verse from Inside Macintosh, in which case what are you doing here?)
