I have had this book since it was printed and oddly, even though it has aged almost 15 years, the idea (or perhaps ideals) remain sound. Commodore-Amiga did some excellent things while they were around and this is one of those things. Striving to help you stick to simplicity and intuitiveness of your interface works just as well now as it did then. When I get stuck on where to make this type of choice available or when should a menu item be greyed out I leaf through the book and usually find my way again. Much of the information is not directly useful anymore since it was written with the Amiga OS in mind but it does apply.

Now you may think that there are better books out there. And there maybe. However this book is a "five star" book. I bought this book for a beginning apache class. We were able to follow the instructions and down load the Apache server from the Internet. The only problem we had was with the NIS system that was not anticipated in this book. It was a lot more important to use this book to read the flat files and see how they were related to each other. The section on Extra Modules (chapter 12) gave a way to improve the server and go outside the scope of this book. This book covered more details than I was looking for; this ways different people can use the book to target their particular needs. You can safely say:
"This book has everything you need to set up an apache server."

Your pricing for this one is way out of line. I expected it to be less that at other sites.

Apple II User's Guide

The best book about Applesoft BASIC.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1997-08-06
I read the Second Edition of the Apple II Users' Guide. This edition covers Applesoft BASIC programming and can be read easily by novices, yet is informative enough for experts. It is exhaustive; the reference guide in the back gives precise definitions of each Applesoft command. Indeed, this book is better than the official Apple documentation.

One warning: this book was published before or nearly at the same time as when ProDOS came out, and covers only Apple DOS 3.3. (Some editions may cover ProDOS, but not the one that I read.)

"Thesaurus"? Try "Tome of Knowledge"

Aaron Filler frightens me: not in a Stephen King kind of way; more that anyone who pulled together just shy of 900 oversized pages of Apple II (sans IIgs) reference material is deserving of godhood in the retro-computing culture.

Apple Thesaurus covers computer and peripheral hardware in an unthinkably comprehensive way, operating systems, software, programming and systems management. Though not all topics are covered exhaustively (but most are), almost every possible topic is covered.

To most, the Apple II is a relic. To its zealous modern-day followers, the Apple Thesaurus can and should be considered a sacred text, without which no Apple II library can be considered complete. A must-read as well as a must-have.

This is not a how to book - it is an excellent reference book which follows Apple's tradition of clear and concise guides.

Great introduction to subject for any professional
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-31
To come up to speed in a new position within an ASP, I bought three books on the subject. This one is the most clearly written of the three, and would be useful to anyone newly employed by an ASP, or a professional responsible for making decisions on using an ASP. The book clearly navigates the reader between the two extremes of most technology books - which are books that seem to be written for people who have never bought a computer, or books that are heavily laden with computer science/techy jargon. I was truly amazed at the content of the first chapter, which has given me a new perspective on the recent past and possible future of commerce - a real eye-opener.

Reviewed by Carolyn Howard-Johnson, award-winning author of This is the Place, Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remembered and The Frugal Book Promoter: How to do What Your Publisher Won't

In case you haven't noticed, everyone is remodeling. Or building.

"Architecture Fixtures and Hardware" is certainly a book for those who are transforming their lives but it is also for those of us who have decided to stay put. At a fraction of the cost of a big change, modifying the details in our homes can work wonders. "Fixtures and Hardware" gives us ideas for doors and windows, flooring, kitchens, bathrooms, storage and more.

A big book, not quite as big as what we've come to think of as a coffee table book, it is packed with pictures, inside and out, of lovely conversions to fit every taste. Wait until you see the spotless photography by Chris Everard! It's going to make you want to tear up your floors and install plywood (p. 42). Yes, plywood! It "displays a more exuberant grain than ordinary planks and can be cut into much wider boards" to show off the pattern. Now, I can't imagine a more beautiful, money-saving device than that. It's only the beginning for those who buy and browse this lovely book as only Ryland Peters & Small can design them.

This book is useful and informative, and it stands the test of time. I'd thought it might be outdated by now, but the ideas and concepts are solid and you're not likely to find its material elsewhere.
