His abiding love of trees is evident in this deeply personal account of trees he's found and ...respected enough to photograph, research and write about. I bought this because we already had "Meetings with Remarkable Trees" and we were in no way disappointed. The photos are excellent, the trees selected really are remarkable, and the narrative is engaging. Not much else to say, both my husband and I love the book, and it's on the coffee table right now. We have had guests pick it up and also fall in love... attesting to the wide appeal of this photographer-naturalist.

A very nice book, with remarkable trees, however, from the cover I suppose I wrongly assumed they would be beautiful trees. Quite a lot of the book is spent on African trees of a very strange nature, and to my husband's suprise, very little was done on the banyan tree. I was looking forward to large, ancient trees myself. All in all, it is still a wonderful book, it just wasn't what we were expecting.

Trees are grouped by various, sensible categories that other books on trees might neglect: Giants: Gods, Goddesses, Grizzlies; Dwarfs: For Fear of Little Men, In Bondage; Methuselahs: The Living and the Dead, Shrines; Dreams: Prisoners, Aliens, Lovers and Dancers, Snakes and Ladders, Ghosts; and Trees in Peril: Do the Loggers always Win? and Ten Green Bottles. Pakenham's text is great fun to read, as can be viewed from those sectional titles, and individual tree titles such as "Tie up my feet, Darling, and I'll live forever" for the Bonsai tree that is the In Bondage section.

I suppose coffee table books really shouldn't be considered exceptional items to read - view, yes; read, not so much. This is an exception. Tolkien's Ents are invoked for a handful of trees, and rightly so; geography students who get a core borer stuck and (somehow) get permission to cut down what had possibly been the oldest tree in the world just to retrieve it are warned against; and, of course, it is mentioned that any fool can climb a gum tree. I've read this about six times this year, high time I count it officially.

Go gingko go

Review Date: 2007-03-21
In fall 2006, Lansing's forestry department planted a tiny gingko biloba tree between the sidewalk and the street in front of my house.
It had four and a half branches, all oriented in one plane like the candlesticks in a menorah. You could barely roast a wiener with it.
I scrambled into the house for a book I had bought, by sheer coincidence, the previous day -- Thomas Pakenham's "Remarkable Trees of the World."
Yes! There, sprawling across pages 110 and 111, was a gingko nearly 1,000 years old, still living in Tokyo, measuring 30 feet in girth and 66 feet high.
Pakenham, a British historian with Irish wanderlust and a gentle sense of drama, has traveled the world to photograph and research the history and lore of 60 of the world's most remarkable trees.
This oversize book, just now out in paperback, is so relaxed and un-sensational you picture Pakenham walking from tree to tree, a Haydn string quartet playing in the background, not minding the continents and oceans in between. It's a follow-up to another book that's just as good: "Meetings With Remarkable Trees," in which Packenham confined his wanderings to the British Isles. The response to "Meetings" was so warm that Pakenham packed his bags and expanded his search to global proportions.
Pakenham's style is that of a curious, intelligent pilgrim. He pairs generous full-page or double-page images of his subjects with un-fussy, lightly conversational background information. He clearly respects local lore and legend, but doesn't go overboard with it, nor does he bog the text down in scientific details. The result is almost a set of personality profiles.
The images are spectacular -- given the subject matter, most of them can't help it -- but sensitively chosen and framed, with an eye toward the unique setting, mood and attributes of each tree.
It's a low-key approach, but if this book doesn't awaken your sense of awe, nothing can. That little stick of a gingko in my front yard, for example, belongs to a hyper-ancient species/order/family that predates dinosaurs. Its peculiar lineage (it's related to ferns) is betrayed by unique, fan-shaped leaves that have no central fold.
Of course, trees have their own agenda, and don't care whether they get into a coffee-table book or not (it's tempting to think they'd rather not, insofar as books are made of paper). But it was hard not to think of Pakenham's gargantuan gingko as a thundering encouragement for my little tree's stressed-out, brown-fringed leaves and spindly trunk.
For one thing, Japanese Buddhists believe the gingko, not the Bo tree of India, was the tree under which Buddha found enlightenment.
If lore doesn't thrill, Pakenham serves up history and science. For example, a gingko 800 yards from the epicenter of Hiroshima threw up new sprouts even after the atomic bomb hit.
But enough about gingkos. In this book, the reader will meet a panoply of the world's most amazing creatures: General Sherman, a mega-giant sequoia in California that weights 1,500 tons and is probably the largest living thing on Earth; ancient teapot-shaped African baobabs out of a Dr. Suess illustration; the leaning Italian cypress said to have been planted by St. Francis; wind-lashed cypresses clinging to the rocky California coast; great oaks with hollows where 20 people can sit down to a banquet; bristlecone pines now into their fifth millennium of existence.
Some of these magnificent trees are near roadsides or chained off in parks, all but ignored by passersby. The wonder of this book is that it tunes the mind to the low-frequency, centuries-long chords only these creatures can hear. Looking at trees that have lived the better part of a millennium make you wonder whether there will be a California -- the home of a disproportionate number of these giants -- or a Lansing in 1,000 years.
My bet's on Lansing, which is far less likely to slip into the ocean before my gingko grows up.

I read this to our son, sadly, after he "out grew" these books, they were passed on. Happily, after searching all over I found these treasures on Amazon and now have a new collection for our beautiful grand daughter to enjoy.

Cute, sturdy book and a lovely story -- but beware; this version's abridged!

I have loved this book since I had it read to me many years ago, and am excited to share it with my own child. A word of caution, however, regarding the "Little Golden Treasures" version -- it has been abridged from the original! A purist like myself will prefer a copy of the full version. I may still pick it up for our child sometime down the road. The story is a lovely one and the pictures are beautiful.

Now I'm a Believer

I wasn't really into the "green revolution" a few weeks ago. I'm an officer in the Navy and for the past 8 years I haven't exactly been surrounded by liberal-thinking environmentalists.

I read this book because I'm a believer in Tim Sanders, and he has made a believer out of me.

This isn't just a book for environmentalists to rally around, it's absolutely essential for anyone who wants to thrive in today's market and become a part of the "responsibility revolution". In a nutshell, this book will tell you how to identify the causes of wastefulness at work and inspire you to change them.

In 5 years you may not have to read this book because there will be hundreds of others touching on the same subject. What Tim has captured is truly forward-thinking, and time will prove that we can't ignore what he's saying.

Buy a copy, get inspired, then go out and make a difference.

You can't afford to ignore the responsibility revolution

I loved Tim's first two books, Love is the Killer App and The Likeability Factor. These books discussed how we can impact the people around us for the better. I also have had the pleasure of seeing Tim speak, and hired him to keynote for the professional society I direct. I have been eagerly awaiting this new book because Tim's message is always clear, powerful and captivating.

Saving the World at Work further captures the energy and commitment of Tim Sanders, and his quest to make our world a better place. Many of us want to take steps to save this world, but have only taken baby steps to do so. Tim helps us understand how to become fully committed to saving the world, explaining how dramatically we can affect it by changing the way we do business.

This is not just another book about how to go green, but rather a tale of how we can have healthier bottom lines and more successful businesses by taking care of the environment, employees and the surrounding community.

Tim will change the way you think about saving the planet and help you understand how you can indeed make a difference as an individual.

Prophet of Postmodern Corporate Values

Review Date: 2008-11-03
Every age has its prophets who observe the movement of social, political and economic forces then project what the future might hold. Tim Sanders' new book, Saving the World at Work, represents the projections of a knowledgeable and thoughtful prognosticator. Sanders has observed the effect of recent events on the psyche of individuals. Events such as September 11, CEO scandals, and the environmental crisis are traumas that have shocked most individuals into re-examining the values they once embraced. Although the recent financial and economic shocks came post-publication, they bolster Sanders' case.

In his book, Sanders identifies this change -- this new set of values being adopted -- as a social responsibility revolution. He sees the social responsibility revolution as people caring for more than profit alone. They care for employees, the community and the environment.

He also describes how he sees the social responsibility revolution evolving. The true believers, or "Saver Soldiers" as Sanders calls them, are the change agents of this move to look beyond the bottom line. He articulates how you can become a Saver Soldier through assessing your realm of influence and then executing the long list of recommended actions that he lays out near the end of the book.

I highly recommend reading this book. We live in a period of dramatic upheaval. The mindset and values of Modernity are giving way to a Postmodern perspective. "Saving the World at Work" helps clarify what many people feel. It also describes a likely scenario for the future that everyone will benefit from knowing about and helping bring to fruition.

Urgent. Urgency. There's an underlying question that drives Saving the World at Work by Tim Sanders: "If not now, when?" The human race is destroying its' habitat at a break-neck pace even though the technology and know-how exist to ameliorate the damage. Sanders describes how one individual can influence a corporation or a community to take on the challenge of The Responsibility Revolution then nails the punch line in his last chapter: "If Not You, Then Who?" Read this book. Do it now.

Tim Sanders is a very conversational writer. I have read his previous book, Love is the Killer App. Tim does a wonderful job of asking people to examine their inner strengths and personalities and then he provides suggestions to make us better people. In his new book, Tim discusses the "green" movement, which is at the forefront of corporate and personal agendas. If you are not thinking about this, then you should because it will be your competitive advantage. Tim has made me think about how I could do more at home and in the workplace. I recommend this book and Tim's other books as well.

THE SUMMER BOOK hand written and illustrated by Susan Branch is a visual delight from cover-to-cover.

Her beautiful handwriting (which is an art form all by itself) is so cleverly complimented by the illustrations and flourishes she adds to every page.

This is more than a cookbook. It is a glimpse at a way of life that many of us long to live. It is the way the author/illustrator looks at life that leaves so much to imagination for the reader and a longing for another book of the season.

Seasons change and THE SUMMER BOOK leaves this reader (im)patiently waiting for the arrival of another from the talented Susan Branch.

Susan Branch is a talented woman. Her cookbooks are beautifully illustrated with her drawings throughout. Her stories convey a warm sense of family and fun and will make you daydream about summer even in August.

Her recipes are simple and fairly easy to make and she leans heavily towards family friendly comfort foods with a little bit of pizazz. In fact, it is her ideas for presentation that make some of the recipes so special (the Bowl of Vegetables comes to mind...a simple twist on crudite that is elegant and delicious).

Those with picky children may find this book to be a surprising source of ideas (Lemon Linguini, Corn Salad, Lemon Chicken, Sweet Potato Fries, Kiwi Cups and Tortilla Roll-ups to name a few).

Her recipe for Crab Cakes is very good as is the one for Fish Tacos. Her recipes for vegetables are among her best; very simple and often quick ways to make vegetables special without drowning them in anything.

The Profiteroles recipe is my husbands favorite; the shells are simple to make and freeze very well. I love to make the Crostini for parties, the recipe is very flexible and all of the variations are a treat.

I love that she is not afraid to mix ideas and food and drawings and inspirational sayings all together in one book. You might not think that a quote from Gandi and a recipe for Jell-o shots could co-exist, but they do, and it works.

I still have the copy of the book my mother-in-law gave me 30 years ago, and the worn cover reminds me of how often I referred to it while my now-adult children were growing up. I'm ordering 3 copies of the updated version today; it's the perfect gift for all the brand new parents I know. Want to know when to alienate the doctor by calling at midnight and when to wait until Monday morning? This book is The One..... Want to walk into the pediatrician's office with a clear, concise idea of what symptoms to convey? It's The One. Want to avoid a trip to the doctor's office or urgent care center altogether? This book can help you do that with confidence and a clear conscience. It's definitely an excellent buy for any and all parents.

This book is like having a doctor in the house. My pediatrician took me more seriously when I called because I only called or visited when it was truly necessary. This book is so helpful in the way it works you through the problem and informs you of what to expect when you do have to visit the doctor. I highly recommend this book to new parents; it will give you more credibility when you visit the doctor and you are not seen as an anxious new parent.

No one has told his heart and the agony of Vietnam as has Charles Boyle in "Absolution". In telling of his time there, he lays bare his soul, what his effort was all about. He tells the how and why of his dedication to America and what Vietnam was all about to the US soldier. A great book -- one that should be required reading for all highschool students --- required reading in colleges.

This book accurately shows what goes on in the mind of an infantry lieutenant. It focused on the human aspects of leadership and command. It showed how to deal with the loss of soldiers and friends in combat. Every leader has been too close to soldiers and this book shows why it is dangerous to do so. Having said that, it also shows what a soldier in the right place at the right time can and will do for his leaders. SGT Jay Cee and his friends from Company C, 3/22 Infantry gave their lives for their commander and friend. Absolution tells why soldiers will give their lives and how leaders deal with it. I recommend it for cadets before commissioning, lieutenants in the basic course, and captains prior to command. It is an excellent resource for leaders.

I have finished reading Charles J. Boyle's, Absolution: Charlie Company, but I know this book will never be finished with me.

There is a great healing that needs yet to be done is this country; a great open wound that lies on the national soul and in the wounded bodies, minds, hearts and souls of those who we sent there. It does not matter where you stood, or stand, on the conflict called the Vietnam War; what matters now is resolution. That is what Charles Boyle has provided in Absolution. I have read hundreds of thousands of words penned on all sides of this so open wound, but none that I have read before have so touched heart and soul. There were times when I had to put the book down to process what these men, our sons, fathers, husbands endured in that time and place that is still so much with us; times when I felt weak with sharing their pain, awed by being witness to their courage. Boyle has taken us there, absolutely there; step by step, hour by hour, day by day as our young men grew, against all odds, despite betrayals from above, into men of courage, into comrades in arms, in a time and place, in a war often without explanation or understanding. Boyle graces us with witnessing the turbulence of mind and spirit when all that has been learned before is challenged in young lives, in blood, terror, conviction, fortitude, and courage. Be prepared for a great adventure into tears, into outrage, into anguish, into great pride. If you are prepared to face the beginnings of finding resolution, if you read only one book on the conflict called the Vietnam War, read Absolution: Charlie Company. "Falcon Six, this is Charlie Six. We're moving." Do move to read Absolution; it is time for the healing and it can begin here. Welcome home, Charlie Company.

A true and accurate portrayal of the Vietnam War and its brave American soldiers.

Frank Glaser's story is a real, first hand look at Alaska in the early days. If you love Alaska and the wilderness, this is the book for you. Frank goes into the back-country and his adventures never cease as he traps, hunts, builds, explores and generally just checks things out. It amazes me that he is always so at ease, even in the most difficult of situations. He is the kind of guy you would just love to tag along with (if you could keep up with him!) His stories and accounts bring Alaska to life at a time when few tourists ventured into the back country. Jim Rearden has done a great job in compiling Frank's stories and amazing life. This book has given me a much greater appreciation of a great state...Wonderful Alaska! I doubt if anyone has ever experienced it like Frank Glaser.

To overcome that, you make an effort to believe that what you are imagining is reality itself. This is a very difficult task. Why this task? "The Father does the work". Not you.

Good book which reinforces ideas about manifestation. Only problem is if you have read other books by Neville such as the Law and the Promise the same theme rides throughout each of his books. Would not recommend reading more the 1-2 of Neville's books. Having said that this was an excellent read and well worth it.

Making dreams come true

How does our dreams come true and what makes our dreams come true? We all have dreams and we often think that our dreams are held somewhere far away in the future, but in reality our dreams are held right now in our hearts.

The awakened imagination by Neville Goddard made me understand that, that our dreams are our thoughts and feelings. Reading the book which was passionately written, not only help me internalize this message, it also brought home the understanding that l have been longing for. It explained most verses in the bible and it also gave clear and sincere explanation of most biblica quotations that has been misinterpretated.

If am ever stock in a place or in an island without food or means of survival, l rather be stock with this very specail book, because this is a book that not only inspires, it also empowers one with the knowledge of ones own ever present divinity and potentials.

Well I've read a lot of Law of Attraction material, but this one put it all together for me as far as imagination and the mind goes.
Although if I would've read it first it may not have sunk in as much.
Lots of underlining in this book !
Really emphasises thinking "from" the state of having it, not just desiring it. DC

I actually purchased this for a friend. I had used it with my baby who is now six. It is full of simple, practical advice from home long a baby should feed, sleeping tips, crying technique management - you name it.

It's a great reference for all Mums with babies. The follow up is The Mighty Toddler which is also a great book to have.

A Great Handbook for Parents

I first came across this book through an inlaw when my first baby was already four months old or so. As I traversed through snippets and sections of information I wished I had found it earlier.
It is an absolute gold mine of sensible information that provides a framework for decision making in the absense of hands on experience. My second child also benefited from brush ups on stage related information. And during those long sleep deprived days, my sanity benefited from being able to read ahead and see that stages pass.
All the basics are covered - how to know how much a baby should eat at various stages, diet ideas, sleep patterns, building blocks of routines. The lay out of the information makes it user friendly. An excellent index turns it into an essential handbook.

Finally a book that doesn't make me feel guilty!

My only regret with this book is that I didn't buy it earlier and that I didn't read it before my baby was born! It is practical, down to earth advice, not wrapped up in opinion and ideologies that have a first time parent in knots. This book recognises that all babies are different and that there is a WIDE range of baby (and mother) behaviours that are totally normal. It was the first of many books that didn't leave me feeling guilty for not being able to live up to some parenting ideology that either my baby or I didn't fit, especially around sleep and crying (what a minefield of guilt that it is!) (I've read everything from for strict routines to attachment parenting). I also like the fact the Robin Barker is a midwife and health professional so her ideas and advice are based on a wide experience and knowledge of babies and mothers in the real world. I will be recommending this book to friends.
I bought this book from Australia and I think that there must be a US and an Australian version which I didn't realise at the time, would have preferred a local version if I'd known.

can't be beat!

by far the best book for new mothers, and if you received it as a new mother, you know it's essential for the next time, and the next time... I doubt there is a question a mother couldn't find an answer to here. Perfect gift for a baby shower. Should be compulsory for new mums.

Great for first time parents

This book was given to me by an Australian friend. I own a couple of baby books as I am a first time mom without any support group. (just moved abroad before the baby came). My little one is now 10 months old and I have to say this book answered all the little questions I had. It gives many options for different problems, like feeding or sleeping, yet it does not preach or impose anything on you like so many books that make you feel like the worst mom on earth. That common sense approach is what I like about this book. Every mother/child is different and there is no universal solution. If you follow the recommendations in Baby Love you will feel save and provide well for your baby.
The book gives lots of information on different age groups, like newborn, 3-6months, 6-9months and 9-12months. It addresses changes that happen during that time in behavior, motor skills, feeding and sleeping. It reassures you with smaller medical problems and tells you when it's better to call the ped.
Over all I love this book and I will buy the toddler-version too.

Simple clarity, personal touch

Ernie Pyle was truly the soldier's reporter. I have the original wartime copy of "Brave Men," and it's a work of genius. Pyle knows how soldiers feel, Army, Navy, Army Air Corps, from Privates to Sergeants to Lieutenants to Generals, Pyle brings their stories to life with a simple sort of clarity that nonetheless retains every ounce of power that original stories had. Many reporters told the stories of World War II, grand theaters, massive battles, staff meetings, generals, leaders, strategies. Ernie talks about privates, sergeants, lieutenants, the adrenaline highs and sheer terror of close combat or being surrounded by flak, the miseries of mud and rain and the joys of the girl at home and that package of fried chicken that some thoughtful mother sent. All the little things that make soldiers soldiers, and men as well.

Pyle was nothing less than a genius, and his death on Ie Shima resulting from a Japanese sniper's bullet was a loss to journalism. But then, I'm at Indiana University Bloomington, within spitting distance of the Ernie Pyle School of Journalism, so I guess I'm biased. =D

Brave Man

What can I say about Ernie Pyle? One of the most well-known correspondents in WWII, he wrote with an empathy for the common infantryman that transcended his simple, eloquent prose. "Brave Men" is a collection of the articles he wrote while covering the war in Sicily, Italy, England, and France. Exceedingly modest, Pyle always downplayed his role while extolling the infantry fighting on the front lines, his beloved "dogfaces." Pyle may not have thought that he was doing anything of importance, yet his articles served to bring the war home to an American public that was being fed a somewhat sugar coated version of the war by the government; in turn, the GI's loved Pyle as one of their own. He immortalized as many of them as he could in his articles, stating the names of the many men with whom he had contact, and often their full home address for good measure. He shared many of their hardships on the front lines, and now, more than 60 years later, his articles offer an insight into WWII for today's readers that is as poignant now as it was then. He makes the reader feel as if we know these men personally-they are our fathers, grandfathers, brothers, neighbors, friends. Impossible to put down, this book is the enduring legacy of a great man whose life ended much too soon (after surviving the European theater, he traveled to the Pacific at the request of the Navy, where a Japanese sniper took his life on the tiny island of Ie Shima, just off the coast of Okinawa); I would recommend this book to everyone I know with an interest in WWII.

I read many of these stories when I was an infantryman in the ETO during WWII. I just wanted to re-read them again to satisfy the feeling of respect I have always had for Ernie Pyle and what he did for the American soldier during that conflict. It was good to smell the smells and hear the sounds while in a safe environment.
It is an excellent 'Chronicle' that takes one back to a time of long ago.

We need Ernie now more than ever!

I have read this book several years ago and was touched by his writing and empathy toward the GI's. I saw a biography about him on the tube and found out how the war torn the man apart inside. That and the burden of his wifes dive into madness and all I can say is there was a man! Rest easy Ernie you did good!

I'm a french reader and I discovered Ernie Pyle through an excerpt of Brave Men published in a french newspaper.
Obviously, this man was a great reporter! I was looking for Brave Men in a French edition but it seems to be impossible to find it, what a pity !.
I was very happy to find it on Amazon.com.
I think that this book is far above all the films or novels you could read on this subject. With Ernie Pyle style, you can catch the real feelings and the fears and the heroism of this men who were caught in this Maelstrom.
