I've read lots of books on Windows 2000 Server

I've read plenty of books on Windows 2000 Server, and this is one is my favorite. You can tell the author used to be a teacher because the explanations and walk-throughs are very thorough, decreasing the chances of making an error while performing tasks. I especially like the explanations on TCP/IP, Active Directory domains, DHCP, and DNS. Of course, these are basic pieces of 2000 Server, but Ms. Ballew details them nicely.
There are also an incredible amount of resouces on the CD that I've printed out and used in my migration from NT to 2000, and my Net Admins are appreciative for the good start and organizational options these offer.

If I had to choose one book to pick for upgrading to, migrating to, or installing a new Windows 2000 domain, I'd have to choose this one.

WOW!

Wow! This book has it all! I'd suggest this book for anyone who is upgrading to or using Windows 2000 Server on a network. For those who are upgrading, a complete guide for planning, installing, and managing, as well as setting new standards for inventory, security, and more. There's plenty of information on using DNS and DHCP too, as well as a chapter devoted to Routing and Remote Access.

On the CD, there's a hundred or so worksheets that can help you with the migration or upgrade, and plenty of web sites that you can access if you get in trouble with it. I'd say this book is a MUST HAVE for any Windows 2000 administrator.

The Easy Way to Learn Windows 98 !

Super 270 page book that takes you step by step through the process of learning and using Windows 98. I found most everything I needed to know to get me started, and much more. It features a very complete table of contents and index to help you quickly find the info you want, then presents the info in an easy to understand manner, without the technical jargon the "experts" use. Topics range from Bare Bones Basics, Fixing Problems and Understanding Windows and Menus, to Printing Files, Sharing Information, Changing Settings and Finding Help When an Error Message Appears On Your Screen (An aid that I use often). This volume contains more data than some of the much more expensive videos and books I've seen, and its even easier to use. A free CD-Rom is included to help you. I refer to the book often. Well worth the price.

If you want to start computing and you are really at ground zero--my exact scenario, I'm afraid--this is your bible! This book assumes you know nothing--my exact scenario, I'm afraid--and gets you going painlessly and with humor. It comes with a cd to download for on-screen, hands-on lessons; what more could you ask for? NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH "WINDOWS 98 FOR DUMMIES," this book, "Dummies 101,Windows 98" is the place for you to start if "Windows 98 for Dummies" was over your head--my exact scenario, I'm afraid. Of course now I'm a whiz, but this book got me started and I'm sending copies to friends in need this X-Mas.

I'm so glad that I've purchased this book. I didn't need to purchase HP MediaSmart server. I saved $500. This book showed me how to turn my old PC into Windows Home Server and opened my eyes to home automation. (big plus for me) I've got 3 PCs, 1 notebook, PlayStation @ my home plus CCTV. If you have more than 1 PC @ home this is a must read. Book is well paced and easy to follow. It has full of useful information. Windows Home Server Bible, Amen.

THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE AND ADVANCED NT BOOK ON THE MARKET.

Review Date: 1996-12-07
Being a Windows NT Professional and working in a Fortune 100 corporation where Enterprise networking is King, my needs for a comprehensive guide to a NT Operating system are self evident. Unfortunately, most books on the market help those of beginning to intermediate skill levels. After a long and exhaustive search for a book that would be advanced enough for professional's needs, I came across Windows NT Server by Karanjit. S. Siyan. Mr. Siyan's extreme depth of understanding of not only the NT operating system, but of the general networking concepts is further enhanced by his ability to communicate those ideas to the reader. The information is well thought out and the layout of the book makes finding any given topic easy. The book is invaluable not only as a learning tool, but as the title denotes, a professional reference. The subjects that are covered range from installation of the individual servers, to domain planning, optimization and tuning, as well as TCP/IP packet analisys and most importantly: The NT Registry. It should be noted that this book is not for the beginner and even intermediate level professional might be a bit overwhelmed by the detail of information that Mr. Siyan goes into. However, if you're looking for a comprehensive, detail oriented book that covers the nooks and crannies of Windows NT, you've found your bible.

Good, possibly the best all around NT reference

I searched and reviewed a lot of NT books, before I purchased this book. I have read a good amount of computer books and had built sort of a checklist of items in my head. I needed NT architecture, Domains, Install runthrough / possible problems and features, Security, Registry and Performance (I placed a high value on performance experence). Almost all of the NT books had these main subjects plus more. I felt this book had a covered the most ground and looked interesting. One thing I liked about this book was the depth of information. The author was giving the high level concept and then, I felt providing a good technical response as well. The information content was great, providing lots of information on everything NT from Server to DHCP, WINS, NT protocols information (IPX, NETBeui, TCP/IP and Apple Stuff), and Netware intergration, plus four appendices that are excellent LAN / Networking references. These covered OSI layers, IEEE 802, Wiring and cable plant, Ethernet, Token Ring, Arcnet, fiber and Localtalk, a section on routing & bridging, and a section on wans(ATM, FDDI, X.25, ect). Information ranged from easily understandable to electrical signaling information (not easily understood). Not only was it good, but I used it for study on my MCSE Networking Essentials exam. Overall I rated this book very good, I found it a good learning tool and a great NT and Lan reference. One caveat - This book is written for administrators (says so in the interduction, too)

The only caveat I have about this book is that it was written in 1996, and some of the info is dated (IIS 2 info, for instance) That being said, this is a terrific book, and puts together all the info you'll need, from TCP/IP basics to security issues and network topology. It got me up to speed really quickly. Now, let's see a new and revised edition!!

Outstanding! Very Thorough!

Tom Sheldon's writing style is very easy to read. While he covers several subjects, including basic setup of Windows NT along with IIS, the information is very usable to a new NT Administrator.

Tom's coverage of TCP/IP is particularly useful, and he thoroughly explains subnetting and how to use TCP/IP addressing in Appendix C.

Overall this is a very useful book and one that can be referred to often to troubleshoot Windows NT and IIS problems.

A very well written book about Windows programming and object component technology. The authors are very concerned by making you grasp how things are supposed to work when doing Windows programming and the plan they chose to show all aspects of Windows programming is in my opinion very good.

With the book, you have a CD with all the examples they refer to. The examples are very well done and this definitely plays a major role in understanding all the aspect of Windows programming.

One thing which contribute a lot to the clarity of the book is the usage of the Eiffel language and its Windows Eiffel Library that make you concentrate on the useful part, ie Windows programming.

I definitely recommend the book to all newcomers to Windows programming or people who have some Eiffel experience that wants to do Windows programming. To finish, you don't need to know Eiffel to understand the book and this is definitely a plus.

Made Easy is the Bottom Line

This book is exceptionally well written and presents both novice and expert topics using an example driven approach that stimulates and motivates the reader. Both authors stress the most important lessons to learn in each chapter clearly and the reader comes away with expert experiences that other books just do not capture. The examples are in Eiffel which is another bonus as not only do you learn Windows development principles, but you also gain an indepth understanding of object-oriented principles that are lacking in many other languages. Eiffel is not a prerequisite at all as I had not even heard of the language before reading the book, and I would definitely recommend the book to those wanting to discover an experts opinion on Windows programming with the added benefit of learning object-oriented principles at the same time.

I was amazed at how easy it is to read this book. Have no experience with 2003, or just minimal at most, and found this book at the library. Ordering my own, because I have read the majority of it, in 2 days. I wish the author had written more beginners guides for other current OS, and apps. Wish you had one for Citrix, and maybe Linux, and how about a Unix, etc!!! This is definately a great book to have for anyone that needs to learn the operations of 2003.

Mitch and company have created an absolutely essential volume for administrators deploying Vista, support personnel, and especially application migration/compatibility specialist. The overview and intros into each section describe the new features and come off a little like Microsoft marketing materials, but don't be fooled by the leisurely starting pace. The kit is broken into 7 major sections including the aforementioned Overview. Then there are sections covering Deployment (including MDT 2008), Desktop Management, Desktop Maintenance, Networking, Troubleshooting, and a group of appendices that cover every critical system file and folder, user rights settings and defaults, and even accessibility options.

The true test of a tome like this is in whether it is just interesting trivia and marketing gibberish or if you can use it to solve problems and conduct research. It is obvious that Mitch and his team have used Vista, deployed it and had to support users and apps on it and not just in some well appointed lab environment, but in the real world. Each of the sections is broken down into chapters covering various aspects of deployment, etc. It is in here where we find the proverbial "Beef". Descriptions of tools and settings as well step by step instructions on how to use the and real world guidance and when and why different options should be selected. The level of detail and care applied to getting right really impressed me. Even the URLs went to the right link or were generic enough to get you somewhere close instead of the usual published links that are invariably dead.

During my initial read I used the kit to resolve a lingering support issue. I have recommended it my students and colleagues and would recommend it to you if you have to deploy, support, or maintain Microsoft Windows Vista.

Simple, Fast Instructions on Doing Most Things
Helpful Votes: 43 out of 43 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-21
I have two Windows XP books sitting on my desk. One of them is a monumental tome, 1450 or so pages that tells you how to do everything and inexhausing detail. Sometimes I need that kind of detail. Other times it is so much detail that I can't find the small tidbit of information I need to know to do something.

I'm not really a power user. I use the computer to do the tasks I need and don't make it a hobby to go explore all the things that could be done.

For instance, I just got a digital camera. I suppose that there is stuff on how to use it in the big book, but on page 70 of this book is a simple do this, now do that set of instructions to get the digital camera images into the computer from the camera. That's all I wanted to do and I was able to do it quickly and easily.

That's the format of this book. It is organized by that task you want to perform. Then under each task there are a set of simplified instructions, complete with what the screen should look like. For most things, this is where I look first, it saves a lot of time.
