I'm serious - you should get this book just so you can read the forward by - get this - GARY NORTH himself! He did a mean-spirited thing (grin): he quoted Senator Bennett's 1998 statements verbatim. That these do not match the toned-down report is obvious to anyone who reads both... and now you can read both.

Surprisingly honest and insightful

The report should be in every home and be read .This book is actually an official document reprinted word for word .An objective , honest analysis of this material would cause a sea change in public opinion reguarding this subject. This bipartisian effort is to be commended. As an engineer and a serious investigator of this subject for over two years I could not recommend this book more highly. This is not a laborious read.It presents the material in a well organised and cogent manner and many readers will have trouble putting this down.Get this book.

An exceptional synthesis of the US Senate's study of Y2k.

Review Date: 1999-07-22
After a year of study and hearings, this report by US Senate is the most authoritative statement of the Y2k issue available. These Senators have nothing to gain by overstating the issue, and risk looking silly in a few months if they have overstated it. This report shows where we stood as of February 1999. The informed facts present a far different picture than most expect. This is very worth reading, especially the beginning and end. (Some of the summaries of witness testimony can perhaps be skipped.) The report covers Y2k in utilities, transportation, medicine, etc. Determining why this information was not reported more widely by the media will occupy historians for years, if any of the risks presented by Y2k come to fruition.

A sobering and frightening expose.

Everyone should read this document. It explains why the Year 2000 problem will impact everyone. It is heartening to see Democrats and Republicans working together on the Senate Y2K Committee for a common cause. Be sure and read the whole thing! If you only read one book about Y2K, read this one.

This is an intelligent, very well written and superbly illustrated summary of Christian History. For any Christian who wants to know more about their roots I can't think of a better book to begin reading about the incredible story of Christianity.

Brilliantly written and beautifully illustrated, this excellent book is an exacting, fair-minded and eloquent look at both Christian AND human history. Hart's truly astounding knowledge of church/Christian history and his remarkable writing skills are on full display here, with his observations and story re-telling complimented by sometimes lovely, oft-times heart-rending and all-times exquisite illustrations, artwork and photographs. (This entry from Mr. Hart is aimed at a wider, more public audience than much of his other work. For those of you familiar with his more academic oeuvre, be prepared for a much more reader-friendly, and lovely, style of prose -a style and imagery often hinted at in his scholarly works but loosed here, in this less constricted writing environment, in all its' glory.) As one other reviewer mentioned, for a one-volume compendium on such a complex and exhaustive subject, this is as thorough and comprehensive a treatment as one can get. Whether well-versed on the topic or less so knowledgeable, for anyone seeking an objective, informed and fairly intensive look at the roots and rich history of Christianity, and how it has become what it is today, this is the handbook. For Christians looking for a thought-provoking, challenging and ultimately uplifting and reassuring study on the story of one Jesus Christ and the religion which bears His name, you need look no further than this beautiful and inspiring volume.

Historical but interesting!

I found this an excellent resource as a historical perspective on Christianity. It is an unbiased, factual read and helps to clear up a lot of the confusion that arises when conflicting religious perspectives quarrel about what Christianity "really" is.
I highly recommend to anyone with questions about religion, Christian practices, history of the Christian church, and especially to Christians who may not be certain what their beliefs truly profess.

This is a magnificent and beautiful book. Exquisitely illustrated, it's the history of Christianity in brief -- as complete as one volume can put it and in words easily read and understood by the reader. It's easily worth several times what it costs, as it leaves one with a new assurance of what he or she believes and knows about Christianity. In very few words, Hart displays his excellent knowledge of the sweep of Christianity from its beginning to the present. There is beauty in both the illustrations and the prose. I highly recommend it!Story of Christianity: An Illustrated History of 2000 Years of the Christian Faith

As a credentialed sub, I find this an invaluable book.
It is full of historical and scientific tidbits of information, which can be easily introduced to the class as an intro to a substantive lesson, or as interesting filler, and even as the basis of a Jeopardy-type trivia quiz. Each of the book's entries has at least a few sentences of explanation, and some entries (such as Amelia Jenks Bloomer's birthday) expand to a half-page of history and lesson suggestions.
You won't regret getting this book! (Of course, you'd get the current edition now!)

After I purchased the Teacher's Calendar, I stayed up late into the night finding great things to share during the next school year. I shared it with my teaching partner so she and I could plan some activities. She took it on vacation and was going to get it back to me in a few weeks. She wasn't quite finished a few weeks ago. Today, she just called and said she was mailing me a check since she had so much marked - couldn't I just get another one. So, I am gladly purchasing another copy and I can't wait to use it next year. I am really excited that my partner and I see the benefit in the mini-lessons that this book provides on so many subjects.

Principals, Teachers, School Staff: LISTEN UP!

This book is an AWESOME resource. At our small school (staff of 18), we have a faculty meeting EVERY DAY. We start the day together with prayer (we're a religious-affiliated school), and a brief session with "The Teacher's Calendar." It's a hoot!

We share the trivia, guess at the famous people's birthdates and ages, and use the facts (every now & then) with students.

This can be great for current events, "this day in history" PA announcements, or use the special events to determine your "words for the day" (that's what we do over the PA at the end of every day), or just stay in tune with everyday events.

P.S.: Teachers & Staff: this would make a great "start of the school year" gift for your principal! (hint, hint).

Great Resource!

This will be the second year I purchased this book! I use it every day of the school year as a basis for my grammar lessons. There are multiple historical and current events briefly explained (just a few sentences) for each day of the year. I choose an item that ties into my curriculum, or I just feel the kids should know about, and write it on the board filled with punctuation, spelling, syntax and gramatical errors. The kids are responsible for writing the passage correctly, fixing my errors, then we talk about spelling, homonyms, grammar rules, the subject itself, and I often use it to extend into social studies, science, etc. The other nice thing about the book is there are plenty of ideas and resources for extending into lessons and projects. Just be sure to look ahead in the book so you allow enough time for mail and research! I have all but ignored my other calendar resources because this has all I've needed!

Being a Y2K project director, I have talked to numerous people and poured through massive amounts of written material. I found "Y2K Survival Handbook for the Urban Family" to be well written and easy to read and understand. This book also provides "Down to Earth" advise for preparing for Year 2000, without going to extremes. It is important for all of us to prepare for Y2K just as if we were preparing for a hurricane, tornado, flood, ice storm or any other natural disaster. This book provides a good roadmap for making these kinds of preparations. I would recommend this book to anybody looking for a good, common sense guide to Y2K readiness.

A thoughtful guide to practical protection in the year 2000.

The matrix of risks and the checklists are particularly useful for all kinds of disaster planning. This is an excellent guide to practical solutions in the protection of you and your family for the year 2000 and beyond.

The authors don't waste pages and pages giving gloom and doom scenarios to convince you to buy the book. Each chapter quickly gets to the point of detailing the things you need to think about and do to prepare. The last 30 pages alone are worth the price of the book - list after list of things to do and goods to stockpile. Even if you are not worried about Y2K problems this book is an excellent manual to prepare for any natural disaster you can think of. If you live in an area that gets hit by storms, floods, snow, earthquakes, whatever then you NEED to BUY THIS BOOK!

Review from Legal Information ALERT, page 12, April 1999, Vol. 18, No. 4. Reviewed by Lisa Mecklenberg, Electronic Services Librarian, State Law Library of Montana, Helena, MT INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY The Year 2000 Computer Crisis: Law, Business, Technology. The Year 2000 is fast approaching. Will you and your computers be prepared? The authors of this timely book offer to help you answer that question by organizing their text in a logical, straightforward fashion. The book includes seven chapters, followed by a forms section, appendixes, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index. The first chapter serves as an introduction to the technical issues involved in creating a Y2K plan, with subsequent chapters focusing on developing this plan, audits, the Y2K implementation process, contracts, Y2K litigation, and insurance. The fact that the intended audience is lawyers highlights one of its strengths. By focusing on the legal aspects of Y2K, Scott and Reid steer attorneys toward the production of appropriate contacts, warranties, remedies, and performance standards. They also suggest ways to protect directors, officers, and companies from lawsuits involving Y2K issues. To that end, the forms section is very good, featuring "Sample Year 2000 Compliance Agreements," a "Sample Complaint for Year 2000 Failures," and both hardware and software inventory forms. Chapter 5, on contracts, contains helpful advice on various Y2K agreements, including license agreements, supplier agreements, and Year 2000 consulting/remediation agreements. Scott and Reid also address the availability of insurance coverage for Y2K liability, as well as strategies, claims, and defenses that will be used by parties in Y2K litigation. Both authors have a significant amount of practical experience in this area -Scott has 20 years of experience representing a number of computer and software companies and Reid has served as a litigation strategist, an expert witness, and a special master in complex computer trial matters. Issued in looseleaf format, The Year 200 Computer Crisis permits periodic updates as new Y2K developments occur -it includes a December 1998 update that expands the book by more than 200 pages. A noteworthy feature is a series of checklists (i.e., awareness, assessment, implementation) to assist in the process of making a firm or business Y2K ready that are easy to follow and understand. The appendixes are also quiet useful, as several groups that have implemented the Y2K preparation procedures outlined in the book are profiled. These include "A Year 2000 Preliminary Analysis Report" prepared for the State of Rhode Island and a Technical Note from the Federal Reserve Board on "Testing Personal Computers for Year 2000 Compatibility." There is also a helpful list of Year 2000 web sites. For those looking for a "hands-on," planning-to-take-care-of-the-office-crisis-yourself guide to Y2K, this book may be frustrating, as it doesn't offer a nuts and bolts approach to making computers crisis-ready. For those, however, who would like a comprehensive overview of the Y2K phenomenon and guidelines on how to proceed with the handling of Y2K problems for clients, this book would be valuable. However, you better get it fast -many of the implementation procedures for addressing Y2K problems should already have been initiated. It is also highly recommended for law firms, which may actually have to litigate Y2K issues.

An enormously valuable tool to anyone assessing Y2K issues..

I was extremely impressed with the scope and quality of the book. Warren Reid is the most knowledgeable person I know with respect to the technical and practical business aspects of the Year 2000 problem and his willingness to share his extensive experience and practical wisdom makes this book an enormously valuable tool to anyone assessing Y2K issues. Mike Scott has already established himself as one of the world's leading authorities on computer-related legal issues. By drawing on his many years of experience with the computer and multimedia industries, Mike provides legal and practical insights into the Y2K legal issues that every lawyer involved in the Y2K maelstrom will find extremely helpful. ...Congratulations on publishing such a timely and useful work.

It will go before a grand jury and loose the battle, then people will be mad.

Wilcox is brilliant in exploding the outlandish myths propagated by the opportunists who are trying to make a buck by over exaggerating the Y2K problem. In an easy to follow expose, he clearly demonstrates that all we have to fear is the potential hysteria that the news media may decide to whip up. While there may be some inconveniences due to the Year 2000 date problem, most will probably be minor.

His section "Electronic Armageddon?" is a perfect example of his overall theme. Some expert has said that Q7 transistors are non-compliant, a completely bogus statement. As Wilcox explains, this shows this expert's complete lack of knowledge of transistor circuits. But, if you believe this expert, there aren't many electronic circuits that are compliant!

In the final chapter, Wilcox recommends a few precautionary steps in preparing for January 1. My favorite is: "make sure you have a non-electric can opener."

I have read several books on Y2K, which left me with many unanswered questions. This book clarified many of my concerns, especially those dealing with embedded processors. The author's experience in this field is quite apparent, yet he conveys his findings in an easily readable format. The book is fairly short, but Wilcox really gets to the point by dissecting the Y2K problem piece by piece. The research he has done is the most convincing I have read so far. All in all this is great book to read whether it's your first or your last. I would recommend it to anyone who wants an objective point of view on the Y2K problem.

A Breath of Fresh Air about Y2K!

Review Date: 1999-07-07
This book is a real breath of fresh air regarding the Y2K controversy. Robert Wilcox is an expert in embedded microprocessors, and he has really done his homework. With more than 300 readily accessible references, he demolishes most of the myths about the "millenium bug" that are repeated by "chicken-little" alarmists who have not bothered to verify the claims they seem to copy from each other.

His writing style is excellent and the book, even when it focuses on technical points, is very easy to follow.

As he stresses, there is potential for a serious crisis on January 1, 2000...but not because of computer glitches. Rather, any crisis that develops will be due to the ridiculous hype of greedy individuals who are always trying to prey on society. If the news media gets into the hysteria loop and feeds the idea that we're all about to become victims of the Y2K crisis, there may be problems.

How ironic that this problem occurs as President Clinton's term mercifully comes to an end. Isn't this what we've grown accustomed to during the Clinton presidency, i.e., that we're all victims bouncing from one crisis (real or imagined) to the next?

As is air to a balloon and as energy to the human body, so prayer is to human dreams and hopes. Though filled with prayers, Michael Counsell's collection is a small fraction of the rich treasure trove of Christian prayers for two millennia. That accounts for some favorites missing, such as, Chief Seattle (1790-1866) and failure to mention John Newton's "Amazing Grace" (346). The historical sourcing is priceless from Gloria Patri and Doxology (Thomas Ken, 294) to Reinhold Niebuhr's Serenity Prayer (1934, 451) and more. God's footsteps show through their prayer life.

No tiresome compendium, it opens a brilliant cascade of light touching upon and helping every condition of the human heart, joyful to grief-stricken.

In spite of few errors, birth-death dates of Menno Simons (1496-1561, 183) and George Whitefield (1714-1770, 319) and Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887, 421) and a few misspellings (410, 464, 546), Counsell's book will enrich every reader's spiritual life. And perhaps he will grace us with a companion volume. It is not too much to say that every pastor and seeker should read it.

This book, while it contains many "pretty" texts, would be most useful and interesting to someone who has studied or has an interest in church history or theology.

This is a large and sweeping collection, and attempts to represent everyone from Clement of Rome to the Cappadocians to sixth-century Chinese Nestorians to Julian of Norwich to Ulrich Zwingli to Teresa of Avila to the Puritans to Isaac Watts to Susanna Wesley to Jonathan Edwards to Samuel Taylor Coleridge to John Newton to Soren Kierkegaard to the Bronte sisters to Robert Louis Stevenson to Dwight Moody to Harry Emerson Fosdick to e.e. cummings to James Weldon Johnson to the Taize Community to Janet Morley to Thomas Merton to Billy Graham. Each entry contains a brief but generally helpful paragraph to "set the scene." I only wish his footnotes, which deal mostly with intellectual property rights, gave more information on his primary sources, although that would probably turn it into an unmanageable tome.

I'd mark this one a "must have."

Mr. Lewis and his co-author are not only great authors (their book is full of knowledge about an area of history that are often ignored in other economic history books), but Mr. Lewis happens to be a friend of mine (we go to the same church and he has given me great instruction on economic history). I am not a historian (but an amataur history student), and though the material was technical (I would recommend this especially to people either taking courses in economic history or who are interested in the subject)but it is thorough and complete. I HAVE shook his hand, and think that what he has been through is unlike any experience I have ever been through. Definitely a must-have book (I'm getting it for Christmas and so should you!).

If you only read one book a Year, this is a must for this Year.
What a man , He has been there , done it and wrote the book.

living in virginia beach we recently were warned of hurricane floyd was coming through. i was reading mr. wozny's book "desert delivernce". i was surprised at the many good ideas he pointed out. in case we lost electricity we were prepared to be with out water for a few days. we also had newspaper to burn in the fireplace in case of cool weather. we also had a way to cook with solar energy if we had too. we were lucky floyd slipped by us. but we were prepared. thank you mr. wozny for good ideas you can use now before y2k. by the way the town of franklin, virginia lost all power and have been with out water now and will be with out water and electricity for 10 more days. michael shelby, virginia beach, virginia

Once I began reading , I couldn't put it down.

I was amazed to discover the many resources available in desert living, and how economical it would be.I'm contemplating moving to San Filipe also. After reading this book I did some research myself on the Web and I was quite impressed with "Eldorado Ranch" near San Filipe. It sounds like a paradise to me. Obviously this author has done his homework well.Maybe I'll meet him and his wife there and they can teach me a bit about solar cooking.

There is much to be learned from this book

Steger's John W. Wozny is busy again with another book. "desert deliverance; a survival guide Y2K" isn't written to scare anyone, but to teach people what needs to be done in any emergency. "Most of it is good common sense", says theauthor. Wozny writes about his "new" winter home on the Sea of Cortez and how different life is there in the winter months. Wozny is a good writer and there is much to be learned from his book.
