This is by far the best book available on DNS. It is very informative and yet the reading style is entertaining (not fluffy though). Overall, it is a joy to read. The author is able to communicate effectively to both the expert and the novice. Look no further than here for a great DNS reference book. Way to go Ron Aitchison!

while the reference from Paul Albitz/Cricket Liu is sometimes hard to read and long winded, this text from Mr. Aitchinson covers everything and yet stays very clear and simple. I could configure and start a caching only DNS server in less than 30 minutes (well, after omitting the first few introductory chapters ;-). If you want to look up sth., there is also a big reference section. There is also an errata-page at:
http://www.netwidget.net/books/apress/dns/notes.html

I also found this book *much* more useful as the first, because of the fact that it is much more up-to-date!
I can recommend this book to everyone, who
*) wants to install/configure/start/maintain a DNS server
*) wants to get informed about the Domain Name System in general

Up to now, this book is really an insiders' tip!!

After reading several of the chapter sections at the authors website, I needed a bit more understanding about how to install and configure Bind 9 onto our Windows box. I wanted to use Bind on old hardware running NT4. I fired off an email to the author and got several pointers that fixed the problems I was having. I realized the pointers he had given me were all covered in his book. After purchasing the book, I not only found out lots of stuff about what all the parameters are but also discovered how to manage bind over the LAN in a secure way. This book is a must have for anyone that wants to use Bind 9 for the first time. It has helped me several times already.

The Domain Name System is a critical component of any large network or any computer connected to the Internet. While a home user would not need to setup a DNS server, business networks of any significant size would benefit from an internal server, DNS caching router or other components. This book takes the reader through a very good explanation of DNS and BIND, how it works, how to set it up, how to test it, and how to troubleshoot it. There are many books on DNS and BIND but most either assume a certain level of prior knowledge, provide theory without implementation information, or provide implementation information without any theory so you have no idea how to troubleshoot a problematic implementation. Author Ron Aitchison does an excellent job of discussing both theory and implementation in this book so you end up with a thorough education. He even covers the implementation of a secure DNS server. This book actually takes the reader from a level of complete novice through advanced DNS administrator and does an excellent job of it. Pro DNS and BIND is highly recommended and one of the better books on the subject available.

Definitely the Best!

Ron Aitchison's Pro DNS and BIND packs a whopping 550 pages of material which is easy to read for the novice or ongoing DNS administrator, and which is very well written (I greatly enjoyed the author's style). After a short introduction in which I learnt some interesting facts about the provisioning of the root servers, the author implements a first zone describing the necessary concepts such as resource records, queries and zone transfers very clearly, followed by the different types of DNS setups (master, slave, caching, forwarding and stealth servers); these are covered in depth in chapter 7. Chapter five covers IPv6 and its relevance to BIND. Throughout the book, references to other DNS server implementations are given, but the primary focus is of course BIND 9.3.0.

Aitchison leads the reader through detailed installation of BIND on Linux, FreeBSD and even Windows (ISC has an installer for Windows in its portfolio), after which common DNS tasks are discussed (how to delegate a subdomain, how to define SPF records, etc. read it on-line here) as well as a chapter on tools.

The third part of the book is dedicated to securing DNS configurations with topics ranging from simple administrative issues (chroot jails) through securing DNS updates and zone transfers with TSIG and DNSSEC.bis which is covered very extensively in chapter 11.

Chapters 12 and 13 provide extensive commented references on BIND configuration and Zone files. There is of course plenty of on-line reference information on these two topics (including the author's very good DNS for Rocket Scientists) but I like to have reference information on hardcopy (in the event my DNS servers fail, and I can't reach the on-line documentation :-) )

In part 5 the author shortly covers programming with the BIND API and the resolver libraries, and he follows that with an interesting chapter on DNS Messages and Records, good to have if you want to sniff your way through DNS traffic.

The publisher's web site carries a sample chapter as well as the source code to the book which is also available in TAR format on the author's web site together with complementary information and pointers to further resources.

My only complaint about this otherwise excellent book is that on two or three occasions I read a paragraph that I thought I'd just read before; some duplication must have taken place (or I was tired). For the next edition, I'd like to read a chapter on interoperability between BIND and Microsoft Windows DNS servers, specifically regarding DNSSEC.

This book is an absolute must have for anybody who needs to understand DNS in the first place (irrespective of the implementation he or she plans to use), and it is a must have for a systems administrator who is either intending to deploy or has already deployed BIND 9.3. I wish I'd read this book before the first mentioned above.

A Complete Handbook on Video Podcasting

Review Date: 2008-10-19
A writer friend asked me to take a look at Producing Video Podcasts A Guide for Media Professionals by Richard Harrington and Mark Weiser. As an audio podcaster for two years, he knew I would have an interest in seeing what could be done with video to produce a show. Understanding my desire for quality in any avenue, he knew I would want to do it the very best and most professional way. This book is THE tool for such a purpose.

The authors give good definitions of industry terms that might not be familiar to a novice podcaster. The book covers a wide variety of features and gives step-by-step instruction on using the latest and ever-evolving technology and equipment, but it also discusses the business side of podcasting such as budget, hosting, publishing, and monetizing the show.

You'll be able to understand your audience and how to approach them after reading Producing Video Podcasts. The book is careful to keep beginning podcasters out of trouble with the copyright police by making sure the reader understands what music is safe for use on podcasts and where to obtain such material.

No book on videography would be complete without some information on RSS feed, YouTube, setting up cameras and microphones for filming, how to edit, and understanding HDV (high-definition video) standard sizes and frame rates. This book covers all that and much more. Filled with graphics, samples, tips, and photos, this is the complete handbook on preproduction, production, postproduction, delivery, and promotion of a professional video podcast.

I normally don't write reviews, but after meeting the author at a recent conference, I felt I had to spread the word. This is one of the best books on technology I have read in a while, and I read a lot of tech books for my job. If you know technology but need the video part it works, if you know video and need the technology part, it works, if you need both it works. The book just works. I have been following Richard's podcasts for a couple years, but have never read any of his books, my loss. If you are interested in video podcasting, this is the book for you. My only warning would be make sure you are interested in podcasting and not streaming. There is a huge difference and this book shows you the difference, then teaches you podcasting.

If you are interested in Video Podcasting as a Professional, then this is the resource for you. The book is a treasure trove of knowledge with a great support web site as well providing you additional information, forms and tips that any video podcaster will find useful. If you have never done a video podcast from beginning to end, you will be shocked at the details and the steps required to do this properly. Richard and Mark have put a lot of detail in their book and what has been great for me is that when I ran in to a problem on the book's website, Richard responded to me very quickly and helped me with my problem. I would completely recommend this book to anyone currently doing video podcasts or simply interested in the process. If you are looking to do video podcasts professionally, then this is a must have book.

This is the book that I've been waiting for Richard Harrington and Mark Weiser to write. These guys know video Podcasting cold - from brainstorming, to gearing-up, to production, to promotion. They've been in the trenches since the beginning and know all the pitfalls and how to overcome them to achieve success. Great, great stuff! I'm so glad to have all this knowledge in one place so beautifully laid out and easy to read. This is where the industry is going, and this book will become the bible for video Podcasting.

I bought this book knowing VB but was new to R/3. Within days I had a working interface to SAP. If you want to use COM objects to connect to R/3 and make remote function calls this is the book. Great examples on using late binding too if you want to put the functionality into a dll without having a control bound to a vb form. Of the many computer books I've read, this is one of the best.

"Professional VB SAP R/3 Programming" - demonstrates how to combine existing Visual Basic tools with the new extensibility tools, so that you can develop robust enterprise applications based on SAP R/3 from a non-SAP programming environment. It also explains the fundamentals of SAP, including the new SAP tools and technologies. SAP R/3 business objects and BAPIs are implemented and a guide to the SAP Business Framework is illustrated. The SAP R/3 Automation tools are used to replicate SAP functionality from VB and the DCOM Component Connector is used to generate business object proxies, aswell as programming the core components of the DCOM Component Connector. Browsing the SAP R/3 Business Object Repository is demonstrated and working code samples of both inbound and outbound SAP R/3 operations are included...

An excellent reference for understanding BAPI/R/3 Interfaces

I'm not a VB programmer. I obtained this book to better understand how BAPI's worked and could interface with external applications based on a project team demand to develop better masterdata loaders. The first three chapters alone are goldmines of information that are neatly tied together and explain the concepts and framework used. After reading them I understood why SAP went this route and better understood some of the potential areas where BAPI's could assist our development team. The latter chapters get into more VB oriented issues but are useful regardless of VB experience (or lack thereof). Our VB developers all own this book.

A must have book on threading

Must have book that anybody interested in threading should have. Certainly not for beginner. Explains the basic constructs of threading and then takes specific instances where threading can be applied.

Excellant in depth

Review Date: 1998-07-14
The Book assume the reader has background in threading and OS internal related concepts (althouth pthread is for applications, it has strong similiarity with OS design issue). It gives a concise introduction to the pthread interface and semantics, then quickly (yeah, I like such way) go into application and related issue discussions. I find such way is very intuitive and meet my taste.

There are two drawbacks from general point of view, one is the book is not appopriate for Unix beginner. The other one is the examples are taken from handy code, not well trimmed to only pinpoint the topics, but it make me feel more natural and practical.

The best source on threads I can find

Wholeheartedly agree with the others. This is an excellent treatment of threading with a wealth of examples. I especially like the Advanced Topics where they address cases and situations that seem very common in practice yet are not documented elsewhere.

This book should have been called "Introduction to Posix threads in Solaris and multithreading issues".

Pros:

- covers Posix threads, including more complex aspects, which are "usually neglected by ... implementors" to quote the authors. Includes threads cancellation and fork behaviour.

- a set of ideas, problems and methods that you may encounter while developing multithreaded software. Most of them are on the simpler side though.

- compact, highly informative chapters (average to 20 pages each).

Cons:

- No word on differences between Unix flavours. Basically it's all refers to Solaris, which I can understand, since Mr. Kleiman is the head of Sun Solaris threading dept (also Posix threads committee member).

- C API only, no existing C++ implementations behaviour or really anything C++ related.

- Mostly recommendations. Nothing on the _existing_ practices, libs or whatever. One or two of the existing bigger pieces of software could have been surgically dissembled to show how it's done. Some math analysis is shown, but it ends with yet another recommendation.

- The methods and problems covered could be more deep, otherwise it's sort of an introduction.

- Some of the samples are too big.

Overall:

- Gives you an impression that the authors are very knowledgeable (yeah, right, see note on who one of the authors is), and capable of explaining complex things with simple words, but a little bit ignorant in that they consider the reader not worth sharing more knowledge with.

- Certain chapters must be stripped out, and more pure theoretical info added.

- A recommended book all in all.

P.S. A stylish cover.

This book was the first I've seen that boiled down the steps to take to get there. The book was succinct and easy to digest, yet sufficiently detailed. I especially liked the information in there about starting out by doing contract work for headhunters. Mr. Webb was the first author to suggest that, that I've seen.

Joe Webb's guide to being a consultant in the Information Technologies field is informative and, unlike many books on the subject, gives comprehensive strategies with real world examples.

I would further recommend this book for any person in the IT field not yet comfortable taking the step into consulting, but wanting to move up in IT management and / or interested in increasing his or her compensation. Joe's candid explanation and suggestions on separation of work from self, along with directed instructions on how to deal with clients would be very beneficial to the aspiring IT professional. It is far too often the case that talented and ambitious IT folks limit their own growth and potential by not mastering these two skills even though technically they improve year to year.

Well-written and great fun. You can read it from start to finish, or jump around. I started by reading about movies I'd seen (to see if the author agreed with my opinion of them, and she did), then moved on to the ones I wanted to see.

Reel Romance is a fabulous book with lots of great information on new and old movies. I was thrilled to find many of my favorites, while discovering countless others that I haven't had the opportunity to see yet - and now want to. Thanks to Ms. Halpern's friendly and well-written guidance, I can make future selections based on special criteria for different occasions. This book really makes you think more about the movies you have already seen or plan to watch in the future by providing entertaining trivia and interesting summaries. So grab the book, pour yourself a glass of wine or cup of hot chocolate, and settle back for a "reel" enjoyable read.

Leslie Halpern's Reel Romance is the most enjoyable "reference" book I've ever read. As a movie buff who loves romances, I was delighted to see some of my favorites listed here. In addition, I'm so pleased to finally have criteria on which to base movie rentals, since my husband and I often stand in the middle of the video store, each holding a different type of film. Want some reel stimulation? Read this book!
Not only is there a thorough analysis and categorization of each Romantic movie, the movie star trivia and 'Do Try This at Home' leave the reader with some challenging mental exercises. This is not a boring reiteration of what you already know. After finishing each chapter, you'll find yourself looking at each movie in a different way.

Be sure to mark the movies you wish to see for future stimulation. Each rendition has a set of tools to help your decision. Whether your significant other needs a little prompting and encouragement or you just want to relax to a happy ending, the descriptions help pick the perfect movie. Use the 'Make-Out Meter' to pick a movie that gets your partner in the mood. Decide which movie might be better with the 'Just for Her' and 'Just for Him' blurbs. For him it's a car chase, fight scene or for her it's a sentimental kiss, steamy shower scene.

Even after finished reading through the book, I'm saving it as a reference for which movie to get from Blockbusters. As I watch each selection with my S.O. cuddled up on the couch, by the fire, drinking my favorite beverage, I look for moments of opportunity to steal a kiss or two. This is what makes it ALL WORTH WHILE! So sit back and enjoy the book and the movie!

I just picked up a copy of this new book. The author did a nice job of pulling together a book useful for experienced programmers and for beginners. This book is very readable and does a great job with bringing you up to speed on the essentials needed for getting a grip on the new language and sets you up nicely for .net. Highly recommended!

I have been programming in C++. This book was a great way to move to C#. The lessons are concise and easy to follow. Each take 10 to 15 minutes. Great investment of time.

I had never used C# or the visual studio before. This book got me up and running with both. I know some C, no C++, so there was a lot to learn. Examples made it easy. Everythign compiled and ran. Took me just over a weekend to get through the book's lessons.

A quick transition to C#!

I'm a VB programmer who has not used C or C++. Wright makes it very easy to get up and running with C#. He doesn't assume you understand the ins and outs of C -- which was key for me!

Great book

I have been programming in VB and VBA for the last 5 years. Before that, it was C and C++. This book is all about the language of C#. It doesn't cover XML, Web Services, or anything to do with the internet. What it does do, is give you an excellent background on the language and syntax of C#. I now fully understand the differences between C++, C#, and even VB. I highly recomend this book to anyone who has C++ background. If you have a pure VB background it might take a while to get used to the looping and decision making syntax as isn't covered until later in the book, but it is still useable.

An excellent book for officers and supervisors alike. Chapters were well organized and material referenced appropriately. Following the book, any officer or supervisor will make better, more sound decisions on discipline.

If you are a supervisor, you MUST read this book. It provides a wealth of information, enough for a two week training course.

Exactly what I was looking for!

I'm a recently appointed supervisor of the Internal Affairs Division and this book contains information that protects both my department as well as the guys and gals employed here. Anyone looking for information relating to regulations pertaining to the Police Officer's Bill of Rights should look into this book.

A must-have for anyone involved in police supervision

As an Internal Affairs commander and, later, Chief of Police, the various editions of this book have been my first reference for the administrative processes. Now, as a consultant in the area of policy review and internal investigations, I recommend this book to my clients and students. Every police supervisor should have ready access to this book, and it should be on every IA investigator's desk.

Every Officer should own this book
