This is a great read! It's jammed with practical pointers, some of which you might think are common sense, but never really thought about. When the time comes for you to ponder career decisions, having read this book will be a real timesaver.

The light weight and larger print make it ideal reading material while on an exercise bike or treadmill. The book is loaded with "Sound 'Bytes'" which add "candy" to the experience.

Outstanding book. If you are in a position where you see your current project heading into a dead end and are trying to turn around and steer your career in a new direction but do not know where to start then this is the book for you. Extremely helpful but also an easy read.

Ms. Barker hits the mark with each of her 30 tips. I found myself saying, "yes, that sounds like what happened to me" or "that's exactly how I feel". Taming the Technology Tidal Wave reminds us why we chose a technical career path - because we were passionate about it, it was stimulating and it was downright fun! After 12 years in technology, I found myself asking - why am I not having fun at this anymore?

The tips Ms. Barker provided for reenergizing, regrouping & refocusing an IT career were invaluable to me. Her insights about not chasing after the newest technology that comes along and focusing on mastering paradigms are good lessons for both recent college graduates and veterans in the IT field. In the world of bits & bytes, Ms. Barker has interjected a warm, human approach to this issue with tips such as being generous with your knowledge and volunteer your time.

As a guest speaker in a graduate-level IT course I'm teaching, Ms. Barker led a lively discussion around the pros and cons of choosing a technical track versus a managerial track. One student found the discussion of such value, he purchased Taming the Technology Tidal Wave. Based on student feedback , I will incorporate Taming the Technology Tidal Wave as required course reading. I highly recommend to other IT instructors to include this book in your course!

A must read book for people who are in Information Technology and want to be a part of it.
Information Technology keeps growing so fast that most of us find it difficult to keep pace with it. Many developers remain in the same position for most of their careers. What do we need to do to go "upstairs" in the management ladder? .My technical career, the one I used to enjoy and be thrilled about, has become a burden. I felt as if I was drowning in the ocean of my work This book helped me find answers I was looking for ever since I started working in this field.
Author with her 25 years of experience in IT industry has done an excellent job in guiding people to take the right path when they are confused with their career development.

I have had this book for a while, and have found many uses for it. I've learned about UNIX from it, but even more-so, have used it to find out what commands are. It's great for newbies and experienced UNIX users. Great reference... does not pretend to be anything other than it is.

If you want to do something in UNIX this book has the command. It won't hold your hand and teach you unix step by step, but it is an excellent reference. The book lists zillions of commands - from common to obscure - and clearly explains what they do (in different flavors even). Anyone working with UNIX should have a copy.

This is my most valuable UNIX book. The real-life examples, both stand-alone commands and piped-together commands always come though when I don't remember exactly how to do something. The keyword index is grouped by functional categories, so, if you know that you want to do "job control" and not a "printing" command, then you are 80% of the way to finding the command that you want in the index. The authors did the work, so I don't have to. What a great, great book for anyone dealing with UNIX.

This book is great when working with various platforms like I do in Customer Support. The only problem is they have to update it from 1994 to include more and/or less terms and their definitions. Otherwise most of the terminology is good, accurate and concise when one is trying to work with scripting or just using the commands in the book. Otherwise, an excellent book. I hope they come up eventually with an update on it.

Here's an up-to-date guide to married sexuality, written with rare candor and remarkable clarity. Be aware: this book goes places that previous books about sexuality within (Christian) marriage have not gone before.

A great gift for pre-married couples; a helpful guide for married couples who want to improve their communication about sexual issues or develop a closer and more unified sex life. This book is both prescriptive and descriptive; be aware of that also.

The authors remind us that great relationships are about many factors beyond the physical; there are tips and hints here that will help husbands and wives bond and connect outside the bedroom and away from sexual experiences. Even so, this is primarily a 'bedroom book' and is best understood from that perspective.

Given the explicit nature of these discussions, this is adult reading.

An informed, witty and vigorous discussion of marriage. The authors catch our eye with the title's focus on sex and then set out to lead us into the realization that sex involves much more than functioning in the bedroom. The book is a call to Christian men to move beyond whatever limitations they may have regarding their sexual role, and explore their God-given capacity as sexual men. The discussion is never timid but rather boldly addresses what men often contemplate but seldom verbalize. A chapter at the end is written to wives, but the book's title and the fact that it was written by men intrigued my wife. She read the entire book and has recomended it to friends. If any Christian man reading the book incorporates even one or two helpful concepts, both he and his wife will happy benificiaries. I highly recomend this book to all married or soon to be married Christian men.

It would be a shame if non-Christian readers did not avail themselves of the wisdoms of this little gem. It is psychologically sound and fun to read, enhancing the pursuit of the joys of intimacy that nature has made available to us all.

Highly Recommended for Christian Men.

I've been part of the male Christian culture all my life. When it comes to the subject of sex, I well understand the dark silence that often accompanies that culture. The authors of this book strike back by not just breaking the silence, but by diving right in as though sex is the most natural thing in the world for us to have an open and frank discussion about.

The book gives us everything from an anatomy lesson, to a discussion of techniques, to a look at our own connection with God as it relates to our sexuality. I highly recommend this fresh and fun book that puts sex back out in the open where it belongs. Sex is a gift from God that Christians have often refused to open because of fear, shame or whatever. This book encourages us to tear open the gift and celebrate what's inside.

While the basic facts are probably available on the Microsoft website, it would take me a lifetime to find them. Thanks Microsoft Press.

No one source can hold all information about Vista. I search the electronic version of this book first for my Vista questions and if the perfect solution is not there, I have still learned enough to get to quickly get to the heart of the topic without doing countless fruitless web searches.

A helpful guide to cope with a tragic loss

I was told very little about my miscarriage, why it happened, how I should deal with it. "It happens to a lot of women", "You will have to grieve like it was a real baby", "It was better to happen now instead of later", "Try again." I was frustrated and didn't understand what just happened to me and my developing baby. This book answered a lot of my questions. I got an understanding of what a miscarriage is, how it happens, and why. (both myth and fact) The stories from other women made me feel that I really wasn't alone. This book helped me cope with the pain of loosing a baby. I highly recommend it to every woman who suffers a miscarriage!

This book combined with Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler helped me prevent a third miscarriage and carry my beautiful little girl to term. What a shame it is out of print. Perhaps there is similar information in another book. The way it helped me was specifically the information regarding treatment options for low progesterone. Using the Weschler book, I was able to diagnose my probable problem. This book gave the treatment of progesterone cream the thumbs down since she says 'most women can't determine exactly when they are ovulating and the cream works best when used 48 hours after ovualtion/conception.' However, using the Weschler book enables you to know both before and after you ovulate and you can even use a kit to help confirm you are ovulating if you want to be very certain. With Weschlur's methods, you can save money on kits since you will probably be so sure of your approaching ovulation, you will only need to use one or two sticks to confirm. Anyway, my heart goes out to all who have experienced miscarriage as I have. God be with you and good luck. I hope this helps someone else out there!

After a miscarriage during my first pregancy, I felt I needed answers. Even though there is rarely a known cause for a miscarriage, I feel better knowing there are steps I can take to make sure everything is being done for me that can possibly be done. I may never need to concern myself with another miscarriage again, but just having some knowledge is very powerful and has given me hope. It was very healing for me to know I now have "knowledge power" when everything else seems so out of my hands. I also plan to share this book with anyone brave enough to speak about their miscarriage. Unless you've gone through it, you don't know how it turns your life upside down. I'm glad there are good books out there on this often "hush hush" subject.

The pages of my copy are well-worn from use. I referred to this book numerous times after each of my miscarriages (3). Very practical advice, in everyday language! Poignant stories from 3 women were very helpful; it helps to know that other women have the same thoughts & fears. I donated a copy to our hospital's support group, and I would love to give a copy of this wonderful book to my Ob/Gyn. Everyone who has had the misfortune to have had pregnancy loss(es) should have this book.

Review Date: 1999-01-23
When I got through reading Ken Roberston's book, I was struck by its far-reaching implications. As a corporate real estate professional in a medium-size Midwestern city, I realize that there are few companies in the U.S. that are making optimal use of their available real estate options. (I'm sure this applies equally to Robertson's Canada and every other Western industrialized country.) One hears a lot these days about "downsizing" and "outsourcing"--and these are certainly among the options to many organizations. But Robertson goes way beyond these obvious alternative space arrangements to discuss how an organization needs to rethink ALL of its space requirements. What makes this book so useful is that he takes this major and complex challenge and shows step-by-step how to approach it, involve all parties, and implement and evaluate pilot programs. This goes a long way toward avoiding costly surprises. Although Roberston presents plenty of examples and case histories, he does not explicitly show how his appoach should be tailored to each type of organization. Some readers may consider this a flaw. I think, however, that such a treatment would be beyond the scope of the book. The thoughtful real estate professional will want to bring his or her own experiences/situation to bear, anyway , in applying Roberston's methodology. I highly recommend the book for it cohesive approach. The 300 or so pages are worth FAR more than would be thirty 10-page publication articles on the subject.

Here, at long last, is a book that presents the 'big picture' as far as integrating altenative space arrangements, alternative work arrangements, and information technology. These days, it's hard not to be caught up in the excitement about the latest communication breakthroughs and how they might be used in your office. This book leaps past the technojargon, sales hype, and vague theoretical musings to present practical, useful tools for analyzing your organization's present space and work arrangements, and determining what changes would be most helpful. The diagrams are well chosen, and the writing style is clear. It's hard to know just who might benefit most from the discussions--executives, corporate real estate professionals, HR professionals, and even IT people (who often need to be brought down to earth with the rest of us) could all appreaciate this book, as I did.

This book is basically a series of tutorials (or "recipes"). The tutorials range from the very simple task of displaying an image on the screen to more complicated tasks such as terrain generation with HLSL.

The tutorials are organised well, with a contents section that allows you to quickly scan through and look up the feature you wish to implement in your code. Each tutorial has in depth code in the book itself as well as downloadable code from the author's web page.

This book makes a fantastic complement to the XNA documentation. Things that are explained abstractly or are hidden within the XNA documentation are explained in greater practical detail in this book; you'll save a lot of time and hassle. Highly recommended.

This is the best book on XNA.

I like that the book is not focused on beginner topics but rather on intermediary concepts. This book will help you grow once you got the basics i.e. once you are able to create a simple 2D game or setup a basic 3D scene.

The author is very focused and the recipie approach works great.
I surely hope the author will publish other books on XNA.

I wasn't convinced by the "recipe-based" approach before I ordered this book, but I enjoyed the author's online tutorials so thought I would give it a shot. I ended up buying and reading what is, pure and simple the best XNA book currently on the market.

Each "recipe" is direct and to the point with a minimum of fuss. Some are straightforward and can be skimmed over quickly, while others investigate the deepest corners of XNA and shine a light upon them. I've been writing games professionally for six years and there were recipes in this book that made me stop and say, "wow".

I'm not convinced it would be a great purchase for beginners - the direct and succinct writing style may not provide enough detail for those who aren't used to creating basic games already. However, there are a plethora of other XNA books targeted at beginners - this one says, "so you know a little bit about XNA? Now let me show you the good stuff."

If I had to pick up on anything, it would be that the book could have done with more diagrams. Sometimes the only way to actually see the results of a recipe, instead of just understanding it conceptually, is to copy out (or download) the example code. This is a minor quibble, because the explanations are clear and to the point, and more diagrams might have meant fewer recipes, which would have been a far bigger price to pay.

24 Hours In Cyberspace is truly the first book out of the publishing launch pad to capture the essence of 22nd Century human evolution in the emerging global electronic communication network, known as "Cyberspace". Kudos to the intrepid photojournalists, armed with their digital cameras, that found real subjects, then sent their scanned images back around the world to "Mission Control" to be collated into an instant book. The time capsule concept is definitely not new--but the cyber-method of manufacturing is what makes it an incredible milestone package. Brian Cartwright President & C.E.O. MediaOutfitters, Inc. This is the first book I did purchase thru Amazon. And, I must confess, this book is the perfect selection to anyone interested in "feeling" what the web means today all over the world. It's indeed extraordinary, too, that all the wonderful pictures that are included in it were taken IN THE VERY SAME DAY in a period of just 24 hours. Moreover, that day the pics were being published almost in real time in the special web site for the project. The book quality is coffe-table-like. And the CD companion is just a perfect match. I do deeply recommend it.

If you already have a good www browser like Netscape 3 or Internet Explorer, don't follow the instructions for installing the CDROM. It does a lousy job of searching for existing versions of Netscape. It overrode my newer version and installed version 2. Just point your existing browser at the cdrom and start reading it. Other than this, it's great! Ted Shapin

Book is easy to follow, very helpful to a beginner. It would probably be helpful to an experienced user but I am so new to this that I have not even looked into advanced features. I highly recommend this book.

Don't be fooled by the "Dummies" title - Wiley Publishing has a very successful formula that they've developed for this series. As much as I'd like to think that you're going to read this book from cover to cover, alas, it's meant to be a reference book that you can pick up and instantly find the answer to your most pressing questions. I've covered the most commonly used of the ACT! features and included many of the "gotchas" that I've encountered over my many years of ACT! consulting. I've given you easy, step by step instructions that don't require you to work with "pretend" contacts. Most importantly, I've tried to infuse the book with a sense of humor because to me learning a software program should be fun and non-threatening.

I have read other Bryan's books and was glad to notice this one. It provides good fundamentals of web site testing and gives you plenty of ideas what and how to test elements of your web presence. It is well balanced between theory and practical examples. In the last third of the book there is a big collection of ideas for testing, that beginners might get lost and be overwhelmed. Bryan and coauthors do a good job of structuring and guiding, making sure the reader looks into important areas first.
The book has subtitle as "The complete Guide to Google Website Optimizer." You will learn a great deal of How to use this tool and some more. Highly recommend! Start your testing with this grea

Worth buying and keeping on your desk

I like to pick up marketing and business-technical books as much as I can, and read them in the evening to get ideas for improving my small business. Usually I get books from my local public Library (sorry Amazon) but this book was not available there. I'm extremely glad that I bought the book, because it is going to be living on my desk for the next year, not collecting dust on a shelf now that I've read it.

I had heard of Google Website Optimizer before but I had been a bit daunted at the idea of "optimizing" my website. What am I supposed to optimize, and why? This book is really everything I need to get going. The reason that I want to keep this book around is that there is just too much information to work with in one sitting. Each time I am ready for a new test, I will turn to this book for some ideas of what to try, and what variations might be good to try. For each area there are dozens of URLs of articles that are relevant to that kind of test, and I will be visiting those URLs when I am ready for that test. (No point in visiting them yet, there is just so much information.)

This book, then, is not just a tutorial or a technical manual, but an entire *curriculum* of website testing.

But it's more than that. If I'm going to be attempting to improve some aspect of my website, it would be useful to have some useful hypotheses of what might be an improvement; making shots in the dark isn't likely to be as effective. The WIIFM chapter reiterated many of the concepts I had read about in other books (such as types of website visitors) but this is the only book I have seen to actually have some suggestions for how to actually address these visitor types on your landing pages.

So I have to think of this book as a great *marketing* book, not just a great book about Google Website Optimizer.

Must have book for any ecommerce or lead generation website manager

If you are managing a lead generation or ecommerce website you must read this book.

After reading "don't make me think" I honestly did not believe another
book related to web design could have as much value or impact on
someone 10+ years of web experience. I expected A/B Testing to be a
basic instructional manual on how to use Google Website Optimizer so I
didn't bother to buy it. Lucky for me I attended the SES conference
where Bryan Eisenberg was giving away free copies. Our company, Blast
Advanced Media, has since taken our testing and objectivity of our
website optimization to a level where we are achieving much higher
micro and macro conversion rates for our clients.

Some of my favorite aspects which provided much more value than expected are:
-Persuasive Copywriting
-Understanding what to test
-Whats in it for me
-Unique Value Proposition
-The Buying Decision
-Categorization
-Purchasing
-Customer Focused Language
-Great examples such as Categorization, Trust, Reviews, Up-sell
-Breakdown of questions to ask, what to test and how to apply the many testing examples to your site

In one recent test, we used the principles learned from the book such as persuasion architecture to setup a test in only an hour that increased lead generation on a high volume ecommerce site by 51% (greatly exceeding the test hypothesis of a 15% increase). Other ecommerce optimization tests are on track to deliver six to seven figure annual revenue increases. So the return on investment from the ten copies we have purchased has been so high that we feel guilty. Thanks Bryan! Of course, this is why we wanted to show our thanks by writing this review.

Testing not only gives you impressive results like this but it makes it much easier to work with your clients when you can demonstrate the impact of changes and measure the results to build more value for your service fees. Plus it allows you to offer pay for performance fee structures to lower a client's risk in these current adverse economic times in the USA.

Thanks again to Bryan for sharing his deep knowledge related to website testing/optimization as it has taken our marketing strategists, designers, and most importantly our engineers (who all permanently have a copy on their desk) to a new level of objective thinking and understanding around the importance of the smallest details in web development.

Modern Day Scientific Advertising - a Contemporary Classic For Today's Marketer

As someone who has spent some four decades in direct response advertising, I know the value of testing. Like all successful ad people and many successful marketers, I have read and re-read the classic, "Scientific Advertising" by the great Claude Hopkins. It's a classic --- even to this day. Of course, it's quite dated.

Fast forward to "Always Be Testing" by Bryan Eisenberg and John Quarto-vonTivadar with Lisa T. Davis. This book brings Hopkin's important work into the modern age and again puts testing to the forefront, where it belongs. And no one is better qualified to write the book than Eisenberg.

The authors explain Google Web site Optimizer in detail. They show how to use it and how to perform your Web site tests. They discuss the A/B test and the multivariable test. But they go beyond that. They tell you what to test and how to test.

Moreover, they go beyond Google Web site Optimizer and discuss other things to test. All of this information will help you to get far more conversions. With all we have at our fingertips, not testing is just inexcusable.

In my opinion, this book is a modern day classic and is as valuable to our time as Hopkin's book was to his. I hope all my clients read this book and absorb it. I hope they put it into practice.

I've had many experiences when I didn't like the copy I wrote and yet it worked exceedingly well when it went live or, if direct mail, was sent out. I've also had clients who didn't like the copy I wrote for them but I'd tell them to test it. When they did, it succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.

So testing is key to success in marketing. This book is a must-read if you intend to be successful in your online marketing. I highly recommend it to you.
