I read this book and immediately put many of the ideas to work. I am waiting for the results, but what it taught me is awesome. Every idea is doable and each comes with different options which let you choose which one is better suited to you. It has inspired me to not only to keep going with the internet promotion of my book but also to try new things. It is a great inspiration for those days when things don't go my way.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Self-Publishing Manual. Dan Poynter's book is on the short list of desk books for anyone writing a book. Even if you are publishing with someone else this book still has great ideas and resources worth the time.

As a writer (unless you are super famous), you are the marketing director. No one will care about your baby like you do. The Self-Publishing Manual provides you with great marketing ideas to promote your book.

The book covers such topics as: Producing your own book, Announcing your book, What is your book worth?, Promoting your book, Who will buy your book?, Advertising your book and much more. This is an essential resource for anyone writing a book!

Fantastic information and I've learnt so much. Having already self-published I found there was much I had experienced and knew which confirmed I'd travelled the right path. But there was so much more that I didn't know and now I have a plan in place for my next book - which will happen!

Step by step Dan Poynter takes you through writing and publishing your own book. He doesn't promise that it will be easy or that you will be successful, but he does explain the process.
The real work begins once your book is printed--you are on your own and he gives you an extensive rundown of the markets you can tap. For the novice author first you must make sure you have the best product that can be produced--a professional editor, which is one area he handles in marginal fashion though there is a list of editing services in the back. Make sure you obtain both a line editor and a content editor which are two difference birds. It is very difficult to spot the little mistakes because you read what should be there not what is actually on the page.
This is the grandfather of them all and an excellent survey of the field. All of the books attached to this review are self-published books, which have received strong reviews and sold well.

I rate it 2 because it is not my cup of tea. I do find the idea of positive thinking can be applied to what I am doing although really that is the only idea in the book. There are many examples of miraculous things that happenned, but I dont know whether it is described as it happens or whether it is described as the author wants the reader to see to prove his point. Things just happen too easily without describing there are hard work involve to achieve what you want to achieve. I wonder if I can have the most positive thought about being famous yet stay at home and do nothing about it and still can fulfilled my dream?

This book does more for you because it requires some input on your part. Involving your personal information which enables you to acknowledge some blocks and helps you make the changes you need in order for your dreams and desires to be manifested. I highly recommend this for anyone who feels like they are in a rut and need to get out or anyone who needs some help in reaching for the stars with a definite purpose.

Very slim volume, very interesting concept

This is a very slim volume. If you are looking for a complex program to change your life, with many exercises and ideas, this is not for you.

Strangely, however, the short text did have a powerful effect on how I viewed my world after I read it. Joe's list of things to do is pretty short (list what you don't want, list what you do want, and then a few more steps, equally as simple.) What did happen is that I decided to restructure my thinking, considering every thought as to whether it was positive or negative. I also decided to fill up an envelope on my desk with "thank-you notes" to God, thanking him for all the positive things happening every day. (Not particularly something in this book, but based on Joe's ideas.) Each day, I jotted down an thank-you whenever something good happened. Then I popped it into an envelope I'm keeping on my desk. A week later, the envelope was full to bursting. Some seemingly negative things happened but I decided to treat them like opportunities, keeping a cheerful frame of mind while dealing with the issues. If nothing else, I felt good during the process.

Maybe this is all about how you view the glass; a half-glass full of refreshing water, or a half-empty glass heading to a full-fledged drought. For whatever reason, despite the fact this is a very short book, it can get you to thinking. Maybe that's it's power.

PROS: Outstanding tips. Excellent advice and ideas. Original.

CONS: A bit expensive, even though it's over 700 pages.

CONCLUSION: Both small and large publishers do a lousy job at promoting their authors. With rare exceptions (usually for high profile authors), the publishers expect the author to do most of the work. Therefore, all authors should get this book if they want to promote their work. Without marketing, most books die a quiet death.

The Bible of Marketing Books!

1001 Ways to Market Your Books is the bible of marketing books. I have read the book cover to cover once and refer back to it again and again.

I used up half of a highlighter and dozens (if not over a hundred) post-it notes to mark the important pages and key points in the book. The title of the book is quite humble. The material actually has probably 2,000 or more ideas to market books.

1001 Ways to Market Your Books covers it all. It addresses the fundamentals, how to open new markets, marketing and selling in bookstores, schools and on the internet. It also discusses selling overseas, selling subsidiary rights, offbeat advertising, promotions and more.

There are so many great ideas that every time I pick it up again I find more marketing ideas to consider. Even if a person cherry picks, there are still enough ideas to keep one busy for years!

What also makes this book a great resource is that is that John Kremer thoroughly researched the work. His common sense approach makes the book a page turner. Although there are 700 pages, there is essentially no fluff.

Thank you John Kremer for providing a path to successfully marking our books!

Excellent Guide to Online Book Marketing

Someone once warned me that writing and publishing a book isn't as hard as promoting it. When I first started promoting my own novel, I quickly understood what he meant. How do I go about it? How much should I spend? Where should I focus my energy? Will I even get my novel into the bricks-and-mortar stores when thousands of other new books are also being released? If I can't, what do I do?

I found the answer in an extremely useful guide called PLUG YOUR BOOK by Steve Weber. Weber tells us how to navigate the enormous online opportunities available to all authors whether self-published or traditionally published. Weber discusses the benefits of building your own website, selling on Amazon, blogging and blog tours, plus social networking at places such as MySpace, and a host of other things to assist authors. What I especially like about this book is the amount of how-to detail offered, including e-mail addresses for various resources. As a bonus, Weber offers updated information on his website.

If you're stressing about promotion and don't know how to go about it, then this book is a must-read.

If you're new to self publishing, this is a good place to start

I went through this book a few times and felt I got a good value out of it. Weber does do a nice job of providing some valuable insights on how to promote a book, many were eye-opening to me.

I've found other books a little easier to read, but in all fairness this wasn't bad at all. While I did find the majority of the book helpful and insightful, there were a few chapters in there (blogging), that were perhaps longer than they needed to be.

When it comes specifically in selling your book off of amazon.com, Weber does do a admirable job in explaining the pros and the cons of each promotion, and provides practical advice on which direction might be best for you.

If you're self publishing your book, and you're considering working with amazon.com, this is an inexpensive resource you should have in your library.

Way to go Steve!

I wish either I'd known about this book when my book was released OR I had thought all that stuff up by myself.

As there was no way I could have known about everything that's in this book, I'm so glad I found it--or it found me.

The literary world is changing. No longer are publishers taking on the responsibility of marketing and publicizing, unless you have a huge name in the market place. In today's world, with the advent of the internet and its subsequent boom, the internet is the place to advertise. From Amazon (and there's loads of opportunities there) My Space, You Tube, creating your own websites and blogspots, to learning the way around blog tours, the internet is hot stuff.

I'm so glad Steve came along and arranged all the marketing opportunities in his book. This will be an amazing adventure for me to promote my books and discover other authors I'd never have found otherwise.

Good going Steve.

As emphasized in the foreword section, by Dan Poynter, when buying or selling on Amazon, it takes skill and patience. First...as a reader and buyer of books, and even more, as an author. I have found the publication... "Sell Your Book On Amazon"...absolutely the most informational source I have purchased, to become aware of the entire operational mechanics of Amazon. It is amazing!! Author, Brent Sampson has presented all his obtained knowledge in a manner, that a reader and a first time author, like myself, can fully appreciate and in time...understand! Not only do I sincerely value what I have learned from this publication, it also made me value Amazon. I'm new at all of this...but...as a buiness person...for an organization to have accomplished so much for the reader and writer, in such a limited number of years, is beyond my comprehension. I do recommend this publication to both reader and writer. It will save you many hours of time!! Peggy Inez, Author, ISBN 978-159858-400-4

I have been self publishing for five years now. I have authored five of my own books and have started releasing other author's books through my publishing company. I knew Amazon was a key player in my book sales and I have dabbled with Amazon over the last few years using various techniques for marketing that have worked quite well. But, what I've learned from this book, I GUARANTEE will at minimum, double my monthly sales!

This book is straight-forward and easy to read. I read it in one setting. I highlighted, then went back and began to apply the process. If you are an author struggling to get your voice heard and have no idea where to start marketing, Amazon is the place and this book is your guide! I will be using his 4 & 5 star suggestions for each and every one of my clients...In fact, I'll probably make this book a pre-requisite for my clients. I am so pleased with this book, that I will be mentioning it in my upcoming book release.

I read this book around '84. In 1988, my uncle Rich, a retired college dean and my fabulous Aunt Cecilia went off to London for a year, American College, I think. I went on a road trip to the UK...England, Scotland, Wales, spent a few days with them, brought my aunt a copy of 84 Charing Cross Road. My uncle didn't get the concept, economist that he was. Letters? Who wants to read someone else's letters? Lurch forward about a month. The end of my road trip, both had read and loved this book. I gave the vid to them when it came out, it's a wonderful movie. They came home, at any gathering my Aunt Cecilia always asked...what are you reading?

84, Charing Cross Road is a delightful collection of letters chronicling the 20-plus years' correspondence between screenwriter Helene Hanff and Frank Doel, bookseller of Marks & Co. It begins with a request in which Helene inquires after a series of books she wants to buy, saying that Barnes & Nobles's sells "marked up, grimy schoolboy" copies of the books she wants (my, how things have changed!), and continues through a friendship between Hanff and Doel in which the two never meet. As their lives grow and change, Hanff and Doel's friendship remains the one constant.

It's a special friendship, and Hanff is sharp-tongued and witty, making her a delightful narrator. I have a feeling that not all of the letters are preserved here in their entirety, but they're reprinted word-for-word, including Hanff's idiosyncratic punctuation--no doubt due to the fact that she typewrote all of her letters, but nonetheless, the letters show Hanff's personality and her rather abrupt way of corresponding.

It's a short book (just about 100 pages), but it's a special book, nonetheless, about a shared love of books. 84, Charing Cross Road is a must-read for any bibliophile. It's too bad that a woman on the subway accidentally tipped soda into my bag and all over my copy of this wonderful book...

I discovered this book on a dusty HS library shelf and as in Ms. Hanff's words, devoured it "all at once" not coming up for air or cigarettes. I also bought the VHS many years ago as soon as it came available. Since then, I've gone on to go out of head for Donne, Quiller-Couch, Austen, and Blake (though not anywhere near Donne!).

What a great movie this story made. I have watched the movie many, many times and have loved it every time. Now, I just had to read the book. The strange thing is that since I know what is going to occur at the end, my eyes become teared which makes the book difficult to read. Of course, that happens at certain moments in the movie as well. What a powerful story!

In less than one hundred pages, Helene Hanff has given her readers a rare and special gift. Here in this delightful little book are the notes she exchanged with the employees of Marks & Co., a used-book store in England. Being fond of the old-fashioned yet still highly personal act of letter writing, and being equally fond of old books and used-book stores, Hanff seemed to have compiled these letters just for me. I doubt there is anyone who can read this book without experiencing a wide range of emotions complete with laughter and tears.

A lifelong letter writer, Helene Hanff studied playwriting at the Theatre Guild. She has written scripts for "The Hallmark Hall of Fame" and for "Ellery Queen." Her other writings include several children's books as well as articles for Harpers and New Yorker magazines.

Living and writing in New York City, Hanff finds herself unsuccessful in finding certain rare or out-of-print editions of books.

"Gentlemen:
Your ad in the Saturday Review of Literature says that you specialize in out-of-print books. The phrase 'antiquarian booksellers' scares me somewhat, as I equate 'antique' with expensive. I am a poor writer with an antiquarian taste in books and all the things I want are impossible to get over here except in very expensive rare editions, or in Barnes & Noble's grimy, marked-up schoolboy copies."

So begins the opening letter dated October 5, 1949, and addressed to Marks & Co. at 84, Charing Cross Road in London. What follows on the pages of this book are the letters Hanff wrote to Marks & Co., and specifically to Frank P. Dole. Also included are the responses to her requests, mostly from Frank P. Dole. Through their twenty-year relationship, the two strangers become in some ways like family. Frank introduces his family to Helene in letters. She corresponds with the family as if they are her own. Knowing that in a time of rationing, certain items are not readily available to the residents of London, she takes great care to ship Christmas and Easter gifts to the store with plenty of eggs and meat for everyone there.

The final entry, dated 1969, brings the relationship between the bookstore, Frank Dole and Hanff full circle. The twenty years between the first and last notes are fondly recalled on the pages of this book.

These short notes, her requests for specific books, the monetary transactions that took place, and the solid relationships that developed allow the present day reader to glimpse a bit of the nostalgic... a gentler time when costs were lower, trust was higher, and people were more willing to be compassionate to complete strangers.

This is a truly delightful little book that has captured my heart. And, by the way, the fact that I discovered it while browsing through my own favorite little used-book store lends a special sort of appeal to it. I treasure the gifts within these pages--the gifts of self, of the written word, and the appreciation for the simpler things in life.

Joe Catal has done a great job at debunking some of the myths entailing telemarketing. In his book, aptly named, "Telesales Tips From The Trenches: Secrets Of a Street-Smart Salesman." he provides a no holds barred approach to picking up that infamous phone!

Here's a little secret you may not know. Telemarketing doesn't suck; it's the pending feeling of rejection that sucks! As a new insurance agent you should expect to be rejected a minimum of 100 times a week, and that's if you're doing real well.

I'm a naturally motivated type of guy. You tell me something negative and I'm immediately thinking how I can turn it into a positive. Joe takes a similar approach to how he handles himself on the phone by:

"Averaging 100+ calls per day since 1985 and hearing over 350,000 No's."

Throughout the book Joe provides real life stories (my favorite) and examples about how to write an effective opening; answer objections without sounding superfluous or ignorant; techniques to find hot leads and steal accounts (another one of my favorites), while laying a strong foundation by asking the right question and ASKING for the order when the time is right.

His thoughts about time management and techniques to increase the effectiveness of listening were entertaining and insightful.

"The customer should be talking 75% of the time...NEVER interrupt a person while they're talking."

Raise your hand if you've ever interrupted another person when they were in the middle of talking. Did you feel that awkward moment where you both wait about 2 seconds and speak at the same time? Next time, keep the mouth shut and if you do happen to interrupt, count to 5 in your head.

The material in his book does come off very strong, but I've noticed an increased level of confidence and control after implementing some of this strategies.

In conclusion, some of the material is not worth reading if you cannot control the pricing of your products, nor negotiate said product. However, I do give this book 5 stars and highly recommend you pick up a copy, grab a highlighter and implement some of the material IMMEDIATELY!

Lots of tips, lots of typos, lots of contradictions

Overall, I would say it is a good book for non-sales people to buy. Joe points out many things to think about and makes many good suggestions.

Two things bother me about the book:

- It has numerous typos and grammatical errors. Sometimes I've had to re-read sections to understand what he meant to say.

- There are several contradictions. One example is on page 25. He says: "If they don't return your call, wait two days before calling back." But then 2 sentences later says that you should leave a voice mail stating: "If I don't hear back from you by the end of the day, I'll try back before I leave the office."

Personally, I don't want to buy from a sales person that doesn't do what they say they are going to do, so this is a really poor suggestion and really poor customer service (especially if the person you are calling really does want to talk to you)!

I was skeptical about this book, even after I read the reveiws... I went ahead and bought it and I was very pleased with the results. It should be a handbook for anyone doing telesales (Inbound and Outbound). Good for Business owners, who call clients and potential clients (He focuses on that as well). Also great for sales reps who want to increase sales. My sales increased dramatically and my calls were more productive. I think it could even prove effective for sales reps who are not on the phone.

He even goes over how to answer the phone, what to say when someone is out to lunch, and how to get past gatekeepers when making outgoing calls.
It's an easy read, almost a page-turner and interesting too. I want to memorize it and anyone in sales/marketing should... Even a seasoned salesperson.

Don't buy another book about telesales until you have read this one. Trust, it is the only one you will need.

A few things struck me about this book.

1. It teaches you when to say "No" to suspects. I learned from it to be more discerning with whom I am talking. This book tells you how to determine, in minimum of time, if you are talking to someone who can buy from you (even if the other party won't admit that he's not interested or that he doesn't have the authority to buy). Like they say on Wall Street: "fill or kill".

2. It gives you tips to help you establish your authority early in the call. How to deal with various brushoffs (more or less graciously).... When it's better to be direct, or even blunt... It's not just one style of selling, but rather a mix of hard- and soft-sell techniques that can be adapted to the situation.

3. It gives you specific expressions to use. Short sentences that sound natural and go past the initial indifference and suspicion of people... I'm studying it to learn how to keep the flow of conversation so that it doesn't seem contrived, and how to go from one idea to another in a natural way so that I don't sound like a telemarketer.

4. There's indeed no filler. Just lots of ideas about prospecting, presentation and closing. Some may not apply to your work, but you can extract the priciples. I've read this book two times and I open it almost every day. You must read it - now!

This is a no B.S. book on what it takes to sell by phone.
Whether you're setting appointments or closing the deal by phone it really doesn't matter. This is a hard hitting book.
I like the authors no nonsense approach to selling. They're either a high probability prospect or not.
The book teaches you how to get in and out of calls quickly and find the buyers today. The best on phone sales I've ever read.

After Writing the Book You are Only Half Done

Authors are increasingly coming to appreciate the fact that by the time their book is written, only half of the job is done. Promoting the book may take as much or more time than writing it. Unless authors are internationally famous or very lucky the proceeds from book sales may not allow for expensive promotion. The solution is to do it frugally. Carolyn Howard-Johnson's [[ASIN: 193299310X The Frugal Book Promoter]] helps authors to do just that. While the ways to promote a book are increasingly becoming known through books and online resources, everything cannot be in one book. I found many tips in The Frugal Book Promoter that I had not seen elsewhere. I recommend it to all authors.

As evident from its aggregate reviews, THE FRUGAL BOOK PROMOTER is a concise, well-organized, user-friendly, and practical guide. As a writer,The Passion of Maryam I also find it inspirational. Most of us writers, Carolyn Howard-Johnson accurately points out, want to hide from promoting our work. Her book encourages bite-size steps, aimed at accenting the marketplace communication skills each author has nascent within her/him--and which indeed are connected to the essentials of the writing skills. Hers is a guide one can visit and revisit at every stage of the publishing process and find something that further affirms a sense of "Wow, I'm out there." She helps turn the feared, the distained, yes, to some of us, the odious, into a process and set of goals that can not only be affirming of oneself as a real (read professional) writer, but which can actually be fun. Buy this book, go through it, keep picking it up and reconsulting it, and let it help you get out there--and keep you out there. Also visit her website.
That she makes THE FRUGAL BOOK PROMOTER work so well undoubtedly derives from her background in PR, but also, as a seasoned writer herself, she teaches and keeps company with writers. I look forward to her now-available THE FRUGAL EDITOR.

The Frugal Book Promoter is a must own bible for all independent writers, self-publishers and anyone who feels left out of the publishing world. Carolyn Howard-Johnson encourages the writer to empower themselves as long as they have the information necessary to take them to heights they never believed they could ever achieve. The information is substantial. The experience of doing this and actually collecting it so that others can benefit is such a positive vehicle for any writer whether they are first time writers or want to supplement their publisher's efforts. I found amazing resources in this book. If you don't have it with you when you are ready to promote your work, don't even think about it. Get it. It's money well spent...

I don't get the 5-star reviews on this book. This is an honest review from someone who was really excited when she bought the book, couldn't wait to dive right in, and within the first twenty or so pages was starting to wonder if I was duped. Yes, there are a lot of ideas in this book. And I guess if you are completely new to this, then this would be a good book. But also note, the ideas aren't that great, they're old ideas, and there are several other books on this topic that are much more worth the money and time.

A couple turnoffs were all those quotes--tons of quotes (I finally figured out the quotes were from the authors). Then all the 1995 links included, and by that I mean when she offers you a link to a resource, it goes to something like EarthLink or Tripod or some other general service used more for personal pages. The links and the pages you're taken to are like the ones you'd see back in the day when people were getting started with the Internet. I couldn't take much of it too seriously because if you're not sending me to a professional site with a professional domain, then how can I trust the information on that site.

I did go through the entire book, and to be honest, I did not come away with one single new idea. Not one! If you're really looking for a good book on PR, and want to read one with that's fresh and new, then check out The New Rules for Marketing and PR by David Meerman Scott . Now there's a book you can trust. I really wanted to love this book, but I came away highly disappointed. I felt like I was reading a book dated back to 1995. Old ideas, old info, old links, etc. And the appearance of the book and the way it was organized was awful. Kudos to the author for trying. But I need something more in tune with today. Makes me wonder where the 5-star reviews came from. Scott's book is worth 5 stars, this book, seriously, is not.

As a published author myself who has been left to do the vast majority of the legwork to promote my book, I speak with some authority as to the validity of the ideas outlined in the Frugal Book Promoter. The text is chock full of outstanding suggestions and recommendations for elements all along the book publishing/promotion timeline for both traditional and non-traditional publishing paths. I don't think there's a single page that doesn't offer something extremely useful, and oftentimes multiple nuggets of wisdom to get your book in the public eye. I've got several in mind to help expand my own efforts.

Here's my gripe, though. The formatting of the book is awful. It would have been so much more readable had the author or someone else taken the time to clean up the presentation. I can't help but conclude that the book was just a cut and paste job from a website or ebook. There are long, underlined URLs all over the place. The book employs a great deal of bullet lists, but the lists are crammed together. There are also all kinds of alternate formats used in a less than elegant fashion making for a very clunky looking work.

I give the content a 5, but the formatting a 1. That would average a 3 for a score, but since the material is so useful I'll weight that higher and give it a 4.

This book is a great introduction to book publishing. The author really knows the back-end process of book publishing well and provides much insight for beginner and intermediate writers. Another good book to purchase would be: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Published, 4th Edition. While Terry's book is great, the Complete Idiots guide touches on a few areas in addition. All in all Terry's book is a very good book and worth the money.

Terry Whalin's BOOK PROPOSALS THAT SELL gives aspiring writers a publishing insider's expertise while maintaining a true empathy for outsiders longing to crack the door to the publishing world. The author's longtime industry experience adds a huge portion of credence to his practical, information-packed tips.

The happy ending (and beginning) for my own story came when publishers accepted both nonfiction proposals I wrote using Terry's wise counsel. Thanks, Terry, for all you do to bring those on the outside successfully in!

A friend recently gave me a copy of Book Proposals That Sell. I've read and own several others on the same topic but this book is much better than the others because of the style. It's so friendly and comfortable and, unlike some, doesn't feel like the author is a mighty and impressive expert deigning to help the humble reader, but simply a normal person offering a friendly hand to another.

The insider information about the publishing process is especially helpful.

Just finished reading BOOK PROPOSALS THAT SELL. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who feels called to write a book. You could have a great book already written, but if you don't know how to sell it to a publisher you've just wasted a lot of time and effort.

I tried standard publishing, with the querry letters and chapter samples. I got rejection letter after rejection letter, mostly because I did not have the credentials the publishing industry was looking for. It seems that you have to have already been published to get published. Outskirst press made the process so easy that even someone like me, with no experience, could get my book published and marketed within weeks. This left me free to get my book, "Joy for the Troubled Heart," into the hands of those that really needede my help. Terri Cruze, author
