In this original and relevant book, Jerry Fletcher describes how each person has a consistent an unique pattern of high performance. This high performance pattern is a precise description of the unique sequence of steps that an individual consistently follows when he or she carries out an activity that has highly succesful results. The book shows how high performance patterns can be identified and how they can be used (for instance in making career choices, understanding and correcting performance problems and solving conflicts). The book is a joy to read (many examples) and is very recommendable for career consultants.

A great coaching approach.

One of the assumptions in this book is that clients have "high performance patterns." This assumption goes along with what the relatively new field of professional coaching assumes -- clients are creative, resourceful, and fully capable of high performance. The "trick" is to discover what those high performance patterns are. The authors use client stories to draw out these often hidden patterns. I think that's a simple approach that can build deep personal awareness. It's from both this awareness of how one operates best, and the selection of appropriate roles that are a good fit for one's personal high performance patterns, that individuals can truly perform at high levels of excellence. One caveat with this approach, the analysis required to recognize high performance patterns might not be an easy thing for many people to do. Yet, it's very much worth it to look for them. Often, asking several others what they see about your strengths is a great shortcut.

This book was a tremendous help to me in designing an incentive based pay system for my company. It is extremely clear and concise. I would highly recommend it, especially for the price. I spent far more on another book that promised to do more and failed. Very good buy!

I'm a retired teacher who got elected to my local Borough council. I found this book very clear and useful in learning about pensions, even though ours are municipal and it deals with private pensions. Many of the same considerations apply and even the formulas given and explained are not beyond the understanding of a careful general reader.

Herein you'll find the potential for REAL change

As a physician in a large HMO I've been very interested in the rapid increase of dissatisfaction and burnout in what should be a vibrant workplace. Mr. Rehm has, in a fashion clear enough for even a doctor to understand, given insight into the problems of organizations....and given clear examples of what can be done about it. What is presented in this book makes other "change efforts" look like window dressing. I have already sent some copies to senior leadership.

Well-grounded in practice and concept

Most of us know that the bureaucratic form of organization has outlived its usefulness; few of us know what to do about it. This book addresses the problem well, and shows us how to go about changing our organizations to what we know they should be. 'Participative democracy' here means 'relocating authority to where the work gets done'... starting with having the people who do the work design it. Having experienced this approach, I can vouch for its practicality, and its flexibility to the needs of a particular firm, division, unit, etc.

Rehm draws from a wide array of perspectives, including historical, to describe an organizational approach that is "simple and deep". He actually uses the phrase to describe good theory; I use it to describe the approach he recommends, and the elegant job he has done of rendering complex concepts clear and usable. I find this book refreshingly direct while conceptually sound.

The author lays out the territory of self-management in the first several chapters; he and other contributors then provide a number of cases which help us see how it works in diverse settings.

If you're looking for a change approach beyond problem-solving, conflict resolution, and training, I think you'll be pleased with this book.

If you believe that getting along with others is the universal key to success, then this book is important reading. If, on the other hand, you don't believe that getting along with others is important, then it's even more important to read this book. While working for a major information services company, our management team believed so strongly in Tony Alessandra's message we not only gave copies of this book to more than 200 of our sales representatives, but also brought Tony to one of our sales meetings to reinforce the message face-to-face. If you have any questions about Tony Alessandra, feel free to email me at adamleft@webspan.net

A must to learn about personality profiles and human interaction!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-31
This book is GREAT! I have referenced this book many times. As an oral surgeon in private practice and an international lectlurer, I deal with all different personality types regarding people and I also have a staff with various personality profiles. I have virtually no staff issues any more and my case acceptance is through the roof.

By examining the 4 basic types (DISC), you will be able to understand how to interact with people in ways you never though possible. For all people this stuff is powerful! You will have a greater acceptance of what you need from others and you will find your every day interactions with friends, family and spouse tremendously improved. You gain a deep understading of how others think and respond. In sales for example, your selling rate will go up exponentially.

This is a must read for people interaction!

This book is an essential read for the experienced trainers that have struggled with bosses who believe that training solves all problems. Mr. Wilmore provides a clear explanation of how Human Performance Improvement can help organizations move from talking about problems to solving them. The book thoroughly explains how we move from being training departments to performance departments.

Judith Hale's book-title should not put off those who don't have the job-title "Performance Consultant". Anyone who is required to determine how performance can be improved--HR Development Professionals and Trainers, especially--will benefit from the tools and worksheets she shares.

The last five chapters of the book detail her techniques and share some of her tools for determining the source(s) of performance problems, identifying interventions that will improve performance, and instruments to help measure the results of the improvement. Her book sits on my shelf within easy reach, and gets used often.

Required reading for new Performance Consultants

Judith Hale is a proven professional in the field of human performance consulting, and in this book she generously shares her depth of knowledge and experience. Most valuable, I think, she accurately portrays the potentially overwhelming complexity that is characteristic of effectiveness in (a) assessing human performance levels, (b) diagnosing prevailing barriers to higher levels of performance, and (c) designing and delivering "whole system" interventions that can achieve the desired improvements. She also speaks candidly about the crucial relationship and alchemy that must exist between consultant and (manager/executive) client.

Judith has developed numerous tools and techniques to aid her in her own consulting work, and she presents many of them in this book in the context of her full and accurate perspective of effective human performance consulting in action. Even professionals that have been working in this field for years will find tools and techniques that can enhance their work.

I have put this book to the test as a "tool for learning" and I works beautifully. As a 20-year veteran consultant in this field, with much of my current work focused on developing new candidates to do this important work, I have used Judith's book as required pre-reading and as a tool for facilitating workshop activities. It has become required reading for all serious learners, and a regular part of our development programs. I heartily give The Performance Consultant's Fieldbook "two thumbs up."

Superb Introduction to Financial Planning
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-25
I bought this book for a non-credit Financial Planning class at Florida State. I didn't stick with the class, but I'm keeping the book. It seems to cover just about everything anyone except a financial professional could ever need to know about the financial planning process. If there's a downside to the book, it's that it reads like a textbook; HOWEVER, that's what it is. AND, being a GOOD textbook, the writing is clear and understandable.

Anyone who would order this book should know that I received an e-mail today (February 24) from the instructor of the intro class at Florida State, making reference to a ninth edition. The instructor did not specifically mention this book by name. However, since [Amazon.com] is showing the eighth edition as of February 24, it may be safe to assume that this is the book the instructor was referring to.

I had to purchase this book for a university course I once took (several editions earlier). This book is a great resource for taking you through the personal financial planning process. This book may seem a bit intimidating but if you want personal financial success, it is worth going through the book. It will take you step by step on how to achieve your financial success. This is the best textbook I have ever purchased.
