This book is ideal for horse crazed kids as well as adults. Nicely bound, nicely arranged, with lots of photos and descriptive language. Is this the encylopedia for horsing? No. But it is an enjoyable book that delivers what it promised.

A beloved great uncle, pass away last summer and left me his automotive tools and almost rebuilt hot rod. My boys and I tinkered with it a little but really didn't have a clue. A teacher from the middle school sent the Hot Rod Horsepower Handbook home with my son and we dug in. The book is comprehensive and motivating. Great resource.

Incredible!! This book has an amazing array of experiments!
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 1999-05-19
The book is written to keep the interest of every reader, but simple enough for the youngest child to understand. Experiments range from finding the bones in bird pellets, to extracting pigment from plants, to feeding sea anemones! There is an experiment just about every topic touched upon, using common tools and materials. Great book for hands on science.

I love this book. I am homeschooling my brilliant seven-year-old son using the classical curriculum recommended by Susan Bauer's book The Well-Trained Mind. When I started out the year, though, I still didn't have a science resource, so I went to the library. After renewing this book from my local library for months now, I am buying it. I don't know why I waited so long! This book is packed with full-color, two-page spreads on all the life science topics I will need this year and beyond. We have tried many of the experiments, and they are simple, inexpensive, and interesting.

A simple roadmap to terrific recordings

Knowing next to nothing about computer recording techniques..._"How to Do Everything with Garageband" walked me through the steps and answered my questions before I asked them. The result was I made a recording that exceeded my hopes and it was a lot simpler than I expected, thanks to the book. Especially useful was the step by step approach...from beginning to the finished recording. A terrific book.

How to Do Everything with GarageBand

I purchased GarageBand earlier this year played with it for a bit and haven't really used it much. I had used Soundtrack in the past and liked it because I was able to pull my projects into it and view it as I laid down the tracks. I was a bit disappointed that GarageBand didn't have that feature, so I didn't really use it much. I hate buying programs that I don't use so when I saw the book I decided to give GarageBand another chance.

As soon as I started reading this book I was very impressed. The book had an almost conversational feel to it. I hadn't even gotten it home and I was already on chapter four. I became excited about seeing what I could create with GarageBand.

GarageBand lets you make music three different ways. You can make a song using the provided Apple Loops, record tracks that trigger Software Instruments or record original audio through your computers audio inputs.

The book is organized into four basic parts. Part I "Get to Know GarageBand" shows you a quick overview of GarageBand's basic features and concepts, and helps you install and configure your computer. Part II "Make Music with GarageBand" is where you start to make music. So if you already have GarageBand on your system you can go straight to this section and get start mixing it up. Part III "Create a Finished Master" takes you a bit deeper into the program. Here you learn how to edit, mix, add effects, and export your songs to iTunes. There is both a creative and technical side to this part of the book. Part IV "Take GarageBand Beyond Its Horizons" gives you ways to expand on your studio by adding peripheral hardware and additional software. It also outlines how to share your songs with the world and how to eliminate some problems before they start.

On the left side of the pages there are gray buttons that contain Tips, Notes and Cautions. The "Tips" alert you to timesaving features or give you ways to go beyond the basics. "Notes" let you know what to look for in the book and offer some essential background information about a feature or action. While "Cautions"lets you know to be wary about what you are doing. It doesn't necessarily mean danger, just a note to pay special attention. There is also info for version 1.1 of GarageBand that are identified with a New In 1.1 icon next to it.

There are also a variety of sidebars throughout the book. There are Did You Know? sections, which give you insight into GarageBand and computer music in general. How to sidebars that teach you specific procedures, often with step-by-step instructions. Also Voices from the Community where you can here stuff from, recording artists, producers, composers and critics.

Chapter One: You learn about GarageBand's user interface and key terms that are used throughout the book. It shows a diagram and acquaints you with what the buttons do and what they mean. You also get a mini-music history lesson which I thought was kind of neat.

Chapter Two: Gets into the requirements for your system to successfully run GarageBand. You find out that GarageBand is a bit of a power hog even though it is an entry level program.

Chapter Three: You set preferences both general and for your new song. You choose your tempo, time signature and key for your song.

Chapter Four: You start laying your tracks. You can lay the tracks from top to bottom or in between, lay them down the way you like to work. You can create a "Soft"ware instrument track and a "Real"ware instrument track. A "Software" track is actually a synthesized or sampled sound that you can play, while making audio settings that will help enhance the sound of the sampler. While a "Real" instrument track does not include synthesizers or samplers, it does give you a bunch of tools so that you can adjust the track's sound for a specific application. You can also choose "Loops". These are little snips of notes that you can use to either create a full song or add to your songs.

Chapter Five: Let's you look a bit closer at the loop browser, showing you how to audition the different loops. Gives you info on how to flesh out the loops to make it fit your needs.

Chapter Six: You learn how to setup a Midi Controller. So if you have a keyboard with a USB controller you can connect directly to your computer and away you go.

Chapter Seven: Recording audio tracks. You learn about the different types of connectors that enable you to get your music into your computer. Since you are no longer constrained by linear recording you can move different pieces of your track around. So if the guitar lick really sounded like it should move to the beginning just drag that piece of audio and move it where you want it.

Chapter Eight: You learn how to edit what you just created. You "Split" and "Join" regions within your timeline. You fix timing, transpose or change pitch and rename.

Chapter Nine: Mixing your song. There is no "right" way to mix a song. A good mix should be clear, it should convey a mood and it should be interesting. In this chapter you get a good basis for mixing it up the right way.

Chapter Ten: You start breaking down already played songs to find all the parts that make a good song. It's not just about slapping together some tracks, but making something that people will be interested in and want to listen to.

Chapter Eleven: Distributing your music. Send it to iTunes and let the world here your music. There are many formats that you can have your song played and listened to.

Chapter Twelve: Adding instruments with Midi controllers to GarageBand. It goes over compatibility issues and other issues that you may not have thought about.

Chapter Thirteen: Adding additional software to GarageBand like Apple's Jam Pack. Additional loops are a great way to add a different flavor of music to what's there already.

Chapter Fourteen: Goes into some tips and troubleshooting techniques.

I really enjoyed this book. Each chapter was laid out very well almost answering your questions before you asked them. The author had a very easy going not preachy style, with lots of humor. The world might not be ready for my zany tracks but I had fun making them.

I just bought a house and it may have completely fallen apart if I hadn't had this book. When my ancient solar water heater broke, I brought out the book and found a diagram of the collector. When the sewage backed up, it described the repair procedure. When the rose bushes needed trimming, the fireplace needed cleaning, and the gutters needed flushing the book described how to do it all. In fact, I haven't yet referenced it and not found what I was looking for. The book is very diverse. It covers not only home repairs. It discusses just about everything we do, almost every day. I couldn't find anything comparable at any bookstore or online site and I can't live without it.

An incredible book to have in your home. Whenever you have a question about things around the house, from how to set up a crouquet game to how to paint a room to how to clean your carpet. It is all there. Although it doesn't go into great detail about any specific subject, it gives you a great start on anything that you could want to know about. Buy this book! I am buying it to bring down to Guatemala with me where I live.

Don't let its humble appearance fool you, this is a great book on sauces and gravies. True to Cook's Illustrated's methodology, the book gives background testing info and the best recipe. Cook's prefers recipes that are quick and flavorful and this book follows suit. If you are looking for a tradional simmer-all-day type of sauce, this is not the book for you. My only complaint is that there is only one recipe for barbecue sauce -- a Kansas City style sauce. I also enjoy vinegar-based sauces, so that was a little disappointing.

Absolutely excellent book of poetry for children of all ages. =) My parents bought it for my son when he was just a few months old. He's now 2 1/2 and I've just started reading it to him. He LOVES it.

The book runs the gamut from nursery rhymes for little ones, to poetry by Coleridge, Browning, Whitman, and Shakespeare. There are illustrations on every page with a preponderance of large colourful ones in the front of the book where the nursery rhymes are.

This book (or maybe it's just my edition, I don't know) comes from England so it has delightful little things in it like a young boy eating "chips" out of newspaper to illustrate the "one potato, two potato" poem. =) Some of the poems are the original English wording as well, thus "Ring around the Roses" has "Atishoo" instead of "Ashes".

This book is also a wonderful resource for the the Homeschooling Family as it can be used for all ages. It is pleasantly presented and is eye-catching.

Highly Recommended.

A Book to Keep for Life

This book is an excellent introduction to poetry for children of all ages. It starts with a section of nursery rhymes and songs that are not only good for singing to babies and toddlers but which young children can start to read on their own. The book has three further sections where poems are grouped according to the age group who will probably enjoy them the most. There are many classic poems as well as funny and silly verse.
The authors range from Shakespeare, Langston Hughes and Tennyson to Spike Milligan and some limericks from Michael Palin. Unlike many similar books, every poem has an illustration and the style of these is as varied as the poems. This makes for a very attractive and stimulating read.
This is a book that grows with a child and would certainly spark an interest in words and poetry. It is of such quality that I am sure they would want to keep it to share with their children.

EXCELLENT ATLAS

THE BEST ON THE MARKET
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-13
I have spent the last week searching for an atlas! I looked online and in my local Borders and Barnes and Noble. I was looking for a large format reference and opted for the Illustrated World Atlas mainly for its 91 pages of comparative world statistics, presented in an easy to read, highly graphical format. The diagrams were simply captivating.
Unlike other atlases in this price range, and unlike the more expensive atlases, the publishers keep the data engaging. It is no longer a chore to browse; it is an indulgence. There is a level of detail present in this atlas that just does not appear in its competitors. In addition to the first 91 pages of statistical data, each continent is prefaced by another six pages of data in the form of graphs, charts and diagrams.
Approximately 200 pages are dedicated solely to maps and I find this amount to be more than adequate.
The atlas also has at least six four-page fold-outs, addressing geophysical information about the earth, the Himalayas, the Mediterranean, the Rift Valley in Africa, the Caribbean and the Yangtze River. These foldouts are gorgeous as well as fascinating.
The 96-page, 80,000+ name gazetteer is the shortest I have found, (short in that it does not consist of half of the book as in some atlases) which means it is at a smaller font and there are more pages dedicated to maps and the wonderful "illustrations."
Again, when looking at other atlases like National Geographic, Oxford, New Concise, Rand McNally Goode's and Hammond, I was not impressed! Although I intended on spending much more on my first world atlas, I am confident that I have the best atlas on the market.
I use it mainly for personal reference when studying world/human history and politics.
Although I am an architecture student, I have also studied geology, geography, cartography, GIS and digital imaging. I find the maps to be beautifully illustrated, easy to read, and highly detailed.
