This book is a great tool for the home owner. The skill level assumed by the authors is relatively low, though not zero. Like all useful books, you are assumed to have a basic understandig of basic tools and how to use them. However, special tools and techniques are explained in enough detail to be useful to the relative novice.
The projects detailed are of the most popular varieties. There is something there for you and many ideas you may not have had. Making improvements to your property and keeping it up-to-date is the best way to protect your investment. Being able to do it yourself is the best way to -maximize- your investment.
The photos provided explain most of the things you might otherwise have found mysterious.
Finally, though some of the things detailed are outside of the average homeowners skill (mine at least), there are so many things in the book, that you'll find many things you can and want to do.

Seven years after his 1979 book "TEX and METAFONT", at the start of a revolution leading to ubiquitous desktop publishing (first Macintosh in 1984), Knuth published a set of five books on TEX, METAFONT, and typefaces.
His purpose as teacher was to show a new way to write and document computer programs -- "literate" programming. In these volumes Knuth published two sizeable PASCAL applications for computerized typesetting and -- as a byproduct -- invented a documentation tool, CWEB, that both preserves the textual accuracy of the source code and improves programmer comprehension for debugging and maintenance purposes.
The peer review process implied by Knuth's demonstration, his careful attention to the tiniest details, and his gift of the source code to the public domain are all foundations of today's open source community.
This is hardly an introductory text on programming and very few of us read computer programs for fun. That said, a programmer with some experience could learn a great deal by thorough study and imitation of the master craftsmen (don't forget about John D. Hobby) at work here.

MF: The Program is a surprisingly readable batch of source code (at least partially co-written by John Hobby, by the way). Yes, you can reproduce (almost) the book from the source code (and get a printout that includes post-publication bugs fixes and enhancements), but it's not quite as convenient and lacks the page-by-page mini-indices. Whether the convenience is worth [the money] is up to you.
Where the book is especially helpful is for someone who's looking to see graphical algorithims spelled out by a master programmer in a literate and enteratining way. Me, I've got the full 5 volume set of TeX/MF books, but then, once upon a time, this was how I made my living.

This wonderful book in an excellent dictionary of religious words and phrases. In a remarkably short space, it defines the terms in a concise and highly informative way, often explaining how different groups differ on them. I have found that every word that I have been interested in is indeed covered in this book. I highly recommend this resource!

As a religious studies professor to undergraduate students, Irving Hexham understands the sense of bewilderment that can accompany any study of the world's religions. In this concise and helpful volume, he gives us short insights into an amazing array of topics: western religions, eastern religions, new religious movements, personalities, sacred texts, religious ideas and much more. If you seek depth, this is not the book for you. But it is extremely useful if you need short descriptions to help you become oriented in topics you encounter while studying or reading. I use it often to determine if a subject is something that I wish to pursue further in more detailed texts.

Best and Worst of German Warfare

This volume deal with the German campaigns in the spring of 1941 into Yugoslavia, Greece, and Crete. There is not quite as much in the way of operational maps, but that is simply due to the greater simplicity of the campaigns and the more restricted areas they dealt with. It also looks at the political dealings of Germany with Rumania, Bulgaria and the remainder of the Balkans.
A few things of interest:
Hitler was not actually concerned about conquering the Balkans as long as they were stable and would continue to supply Germany with resources, in particular, oil from Rumania. He initially had no plans to invade the region but was working to build alliances to allow him to begin the war with Russia. Italy's failing invasion of Greece and a personal insult from new leadership in Yugoslavia prompted his quick change in plans.
After months of strong political pressure, the leader of Yugoslavia agreed to allow Germany to move troops through his country and recognized the Tri-partate Act. This caused a coup in his coutry in defiance of his decision. Only weeks later the successful new government came to the same conclusion as the former King, and accepted the treaty that they had rebeled over. It did not matter, because a now angry Hitler invaded anyways, completly taking the country in a few weeks.
Trapped and cut-off in Albania, the greek 1st Army surrendered. They did so to a mid-ranked officer who was quick to sit down and work out the arrangements. Infact, aides had to find the commanders from both side later to formally sign the documants. A higher ranked german officer felt the papers were not detailed enough...the Greeks surrendered again. Italy protested, beliving they should be involved, and so the Greeks complied, and surrendered a third time.
The Good: Great photo-essays on the assaults on the greek mountain defenses, german paratrooper doctrine and training, and the surrender of the Greek first Army (as above). Great detail on all three campaigns.
The Bad: Not much. Placement of the photo essays still causes you to flip back and forth a bit.
The Ugly: German Paratroop landings on Crete. The German doctrine had troops landing lightly armed and the battle plans had them close to enemy positions and at several different locations. The initial losses were not just severe, but devastating. Had British forces realized how weak the remaining german units were, they could have counterattacked in force and destroyed them before they were reinforced.

The German campaing in the Balkans in the spring of 1941 is a little mentioned episode in the history of World War II but it is really very interesting not only for its strategic consequences but also of its operational aspect. This excellent Time-Life book gives first the political and diplomatic background to the campaign, explaining how Hitler forged his alliance with countries like Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, and how the coup in Belgrade changed the whole nature and scope of the operation. The analysis of the war against Yugoslavia and Greece is very well presented with many nice photographs and maps and the final chpater deals with the airborne assault on Crete, a real historical first. This is a very well made volume and a valuable addition to the library of every WW II buff.

This collection of essays from 21 contributors is inspiring reading for those who want to build their leadership talents or improve their companies. It is designed for good leaders, or for people who aspire to that rank and are open to being taught. Interestingly, the book also addresses how people can become better followers. Unlike many other books within this topic range, this anthology makes a distinction between leadership, which it sees as direction setting, and management, which it sees as somewhat more procedural. The essays are interesting, wide-ranging and practical. We find that the 21 voices here have a unified mission: to explain why some people are better than others at getting attention, accomplishing specific tasks and providing their followers with a sense of meaning.

This book is best for those who have already read a couple of books on leadership, particularly those by Warren Bennis and James MacGregor Burns since these two figure's ideas are present in many of this book's pages. That is not to say there are no new paths taken. Sashkin and Rosenbach's "A New Vision of Leadership" is eye-opening in its redefinition of transformational leadership. This essay also does well in illustrating the differences between leadership and management, a division I was not sure existed until I picked up this book. Payne, Fuqua, and Canegami's "Women as Leaders" was equally fresh and eye-opening. This is a good book to read to start developing more complex ways of looking at leadership.

My wife and I picked this up about a year ago. Since then, we have made about a dozen meals from this book, most of them multiple times (like the lemon chicken with orzo, a personal favorite.) We also purchased a second copy after our dog tore up the first because we liked it so much.
We like this book for several reasons, and the three primary ones are stated in the title of my review: the recipies are tasty, healthy, and easy to prepare. The book provides the calories, fat grams, protein, etc., so you know what you are taking in. There are no tricks concerning portion size; most recipes are for two servings, and each serving is well within reason (250 - 450 calories, low fat).
When you open the book at random, you will find a large color photograph of the prepared meal on the left hand page, and the recipe, along with some smaller photos of intermediate steps, neat and colorful boxes for nutritional info & ingredients, time to prep/cook, and easy directions on the right.
For those of you just deciding to start cooking for yourself so that you can actually control what you are taking in (for weight loss and health), this book is for you.
Also, for those of you who want to adopt healthy cooking & eating practices but are organizationally inclined, a tip: once every two weeks, sit down with this book (and any other healthy recipe books you may have) and plan out what meals you would like to cook on which nights. Copy down all the ingredients, including the amounts necessary. When you have the completed list, go through your fridge/pantry/spice wrack and determine if you have any of the ingredients. Make a secondary list of what you don't have and need to buy, including amounts. Add this list to your general grocery list before you go shopping. This way, after you go shopping you know that you will have everything you need for the next two weeks of cooking. I have found that before we adopted this practice, it was much too easy to rationalize NOT cooking, since we were always vaguely unsure about whether or not we had what we needed to cook. Not only are we healthier now, but as an added bonus we get to try new dishes all the time. I pity the people still stuck in microwave-meals/fast-food limbo!

This book is awesome! Very few ingredients are needed and ALL of them you can find at a grocery store. Mouth watering pictures show you what it is suppose to look like. Has many breakfast and appetizer recipes along with many other dinner and desser recipes. Has nutritional values for each recipe, tells pre times, cook times, and how many it serves. Plus, I like how each recipe has a 'Health Hint' and a little history about the recipe...'Way Back When' and also 'Secret to Success'. I highly recommend this recipe book and I use it constantly! Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

A comprehensive and important book, Counseling in a Complex Society provides the reader with panoply of information ranging from the demystification of certain (often misunderstood) approaches, such as transpersonal psychotherapy, to discussions on the evolving forms and importance of clinical supervision. A wide variety of approaches (behavioral, expressive arts, hypnotherapy, internet counseling and education, and diversity sensitivity to name just a few) are presented with stunning economy, clarity, depth and breadth.
Useful for the novice, as well as for the seasoned clinician, Counseling in a Complex Society may well be a benchmark for the kind of mindset that is now required for counselors to effectively assimilate and accordingly treat the ever-changing needs of the new century's population. In a culture that is growing in complexity as never before, the editors have wisely chosen a selection of articles from an impressive range of practitioners and researchers that address the pertinent, challenging and leading-edge issues facing counselors today.

Offering 350 home plans in full color, 250- full-color renderings, tips on design, notes on home decorating, and quick and easy means to order services by phone or online, America, Country & Farmhouse Home Plans fully captures the experience of seasoned architects and designers. Vivid concept sketches, floor layouts, and full-color photographs make abundantly clear exactly the size, appearance, and structure of home one is getting with each plan. The homespun motif of country living reverberates in these dwellings; even a generations-bred city clicker will recognize the quiet, comfortable, practical feel to the design and empathy of each sample building, down to the sloping roofs meant expressly to prevent too much snow from piling up above. America, Country & Farmhouse Home Plans is an enjoyable and useful resource to page through, especially when contemplating decorations or especially architectural designs for one's own rural homestead.
