15 Makeovers On A Budget

Since the TV crews haven't made it to my house yet, I keep reading these books for tips to transform my home. This one is particularly appealing, since it spells out the costs and time investment for the projects.
The sample rooms are in real houses and include living rooms, dirning rooms, kitchens, baths and bedrooms. Good color photos accompany the text.

Creative & stylish but affordable

I read the book in a day - easy and fun to read. The book is composed of various real-life makeovers for various rooms. Each contains before and after shots as well as information on how the look was achieved, how problems were solved and the final budget tally. I will refer back to this book for ideas from time to time. It's biggest strength is that the ideas are realistic and affordable (but not cheap).

A very good, up-to-date overview
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-24
This review concerns the volume of the Cambridge Ancient history covering 425-600.

This was a very readable book, that I have just completed. I read about eighty percent of it, only skipping or skimmimg a few sections. Admittedly, this would not make a good introductory book, and probably not even a good second book, on the period, but if you are interested in the period and have a working knowledge of it, I am sure you will find much of interest. The book begins with an evocative 150 pages or so of narrative historical overview, with the latest interpretations of chronology. Some of this material is then covered in a more thematic way, and also in an area-by-area manner, later in the book. There are also many sections on various social aspects. One such that I gained much from was the one on education. Interestingly, there was no separate section on women. The bibliography is 100 pages long, so the reading matter itself is about 1000 pages. The book was worth the money to me.

Surprisingly Readable
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-08
Being an armchair historian, I found this work to be highly readable and entertaining. The bibliography is exhaustive (about 100 pages), as one might expect, and their are numerous maps and genealogy tables. Despite numerous authors, it does not backtrack nor contradict itself. For a scholarly work, it is impressive for its contribution, compactness (yes, even at 1,000 pages, it could have been 1,000 more) and ease of reading.

That said, it's not for those unfamiliar with the "story" of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. It more or less assumes you're quite familiar with Suetonius, Cassius Dio, Plutarch, et al, and various long standing controversies in interpretation. So if you've read a few books on the subject, you'll be quite comfortable with this work. If you've read the Routledge and Yale Press Imperial Biography series, then this work helps with context, providing the latest (and perhaps alternative) views on current scholarship.

Don't let the price scare you off. It's well worth several other books one might consider, combined.

Insightful, funny, and irreverent--just like Sibley herself

A wonderful collection of one of the South's most beloved journalists and columnists. A wide variety of news reporting which has just as much personality, poignancy, and humor as her columns. Eldredge's commnents are well-researched and strike the right tone.

Not moonlight or magnolias...

...but True South, in a way that the New York Times could never understand. Sibley fans were appalled at the Times' obituary, which inaccurately described her as "the last of the white glove, tea-and-apple blossom set that had not a sharp edge on it." The Times just didn't get it, but then they have a habit of dissing female Southern writers, as they did when they fired Molly Ivins for describing a chicken de-feathering as a "gang pluck." Eldredge (full disclosure: a good friend and colleague at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution) gets it right, displaying the kind of seasoned journalism Sibley would have liked. He shows rather than tells, allowing us to spend just a few more hours with the sound of her voice, relating stories of murder, fame, love, betrayal, and most of all, high comedy. For those of us who began our days with her columns, a kind of Atlanta touchstone in the midst of constant change, these stories are a revelation. Most satisfying of all is the final chapter, in which an AJC colleague calls Bill Kovach (former Timesman and AJC editor) and takes him to task for his clueless quote in her obit. If you loved 'Tine, you're going to want this book.

This is a fascinating and erudite book that spans centuries of Hebrew printing. It would be worthwhile for the end-notes alone. It is a must read for anyone interested in the history of Jewish printing as well as anyone interested in the development and dynamic of censorship, both internal and self imposed.

Excellent book, a must read for cultureal historians!

This book is indeed first of its kind in its treatment of the history of books and book-culture in early modern Italy and Europe. Jewish-Christian dialogs and negotiations over questions of print and publishing are reviewed in a new and fresh light. The final outcome of what is otherwise simply viewed as a tool of coercion and persecution is surprising.

A suspenseful anthology
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-06
When I first saw the title of this book all I could think of was oh no, another saves the century for the ages with one more literary anthology. The Ancient Library at Alexandria could never have contained more papyrus than we have currently available some short story theme involving the century. Though I have fully enjoyed each of the previous collections leisurely reading them over a couple of weeks (which seems like a century when compared to my normal pace), I vowed no more. Than I opened this book just to glimpse at who contributed and soon was hooked again all because Lawrence Block submitted a Batman tale.

Once again the quality is top rate as the thirty-six well-written stories run much of the suspense gamut submitted by a notable cast of writers. The tales include police and legal procedurals as well as the classic private sleuth investigative story among the assortment of other twist and turn tales. None of the stories shortchanges the ensemble, as this is a triumphant aggregation that is worth unhurriedly reading over a couple of weeks.

A Collection Designed To Please!

Review Date: 2001-12-19
Certainly Jeffery Deaver should know good mysteries when he sees them, and in his
personal compilation of a century of these great stories, the reader should assume it's just that, a
collection of great stories! And they are! Deaver exercises an ecumenical spirit here, practically
running the gamut of the genre!

It goes without staying that short stories generally don't carry the impact that novels do on
the same subject (not to patronize short stories, of course, as they are great in their own "write").
With the exception of some personal favorites of mine, such as P.D. James and Ellis Peters, which
he omits, Deaver's wide assortment of writers is a real treasure! For students of the history of the
suspense story, Deaver shows off Anna Katherine Green's story (Ms Green is often considered to
have written the first American suspense novel) to provide a historical perspective, and then
continues on down the time line. Such luminaries as Ellery Queen, John D. MacDonald, Ruth
Rendell, Mickey Spillane, Ed McBain, Sara Paretsky, and Robert Barnard light up these pages.
Indeed, a nice collection to keep around. Fun reading, too! (...)

Another Excellent Book from the Change One Series
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-02
I initially bought "Change One for Diabetes" and thought it was such an excellent book that I decided to have a look at this version for my daughter who is non-diabetic. These books are such a novel approach and one that leads to lasting change. The premise is in the title - Change One thing at a time and don't move onto any other changes until you have managed to make that change a new habit. These books are full of straightforward, easy to accomplish ideas that just strike you as eminently "doable." Don't be put off by the fact that they are issued by the Reader's Digest Group - I had those same "Reader's Digest???" thoughts at first, too. This is one of the best non-diet diet books I've seen. And it works, too!

A Helpful Planning Book

Review Date: 2007-05-09
This book is helpful in planning a diet because it contains easily read, useful pages on things like the exact numbers of various types of nuts which constitute a 1 oz serving for snacks, etc. There are a few good-looking recipes which I haven't tried; however, recipes are not the focus of the book. The planning elements are the main focus and very useful.

Great, especially for the newly diagnosed!

Review Date: 2007-02-02
I love this book! Being diagnosed with Type II Diabetes is absolutely overwhelming - there are so many new things to learn and so many changes to make in how you eat and how you LIVE! This book takes you by the hand, calms you down and shows you where to begin. The title says it all - Change One - and that's exactly how the book proceeds. Walks you through the changes you need to make one at a time so the changes will become lasting ones. Lots of good information on Type II Diabetes itself as well as on diet and exercise. And plenty of great recipes, including a section on "makeovers" for old favorites like Macaroni & Cheese. I loved this book immediately and showed it to my doctor. She was so impressed she bought a copy for her office and now recommends it to all her newly diagnosed diabetics!

Great diet plan that is easy to follow
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-19
Not just for diabetics! My husband is hypoglycemic and we have had wonderful results following this diet plan. He had several very frightening incidences where he crashed severely and they were very clearly a direct response to food. I turned to this book for help and since we started this diet he has not crashed once. Although I have neither health condition I decided to follow the plan too since it seems so smart and simple. The concept of dividing your meal into 1/2 vegetables, 1/4 starches or carbs, and 1/4 protein is a brilliant idea and when it comes to actually making meals this is very easy to follow. You can still eat all the food you love but sometimes the cooking method needs tweaking and you will have to change the portion sizes but you'll catch on very quickly. The transitions are easier than you think. And you'll feel better after only a few days. My husband immediately noticed a change for the better, he woke up with more energy, felt more rested, and was able to get more work done. He just feels good. Plus, we've both lost weight while still enjoying our favorite meals that needed only slight modifications. The best part, we don't feel like we're on a diet! This book will change the way you look at food, cooking methods, and portions and you'll be glad it did. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel better and loose weight, whether you are a diabetic or not.

Want to occupy your 3-4 year old? Give him or her this book. The star shaped marker is perfect for chubby little hands, and has multiple colors, and the pictures are entertaining and easy for little ones to color. When was the last time the kids were allowed to color in a book? This is a GREAT gift or just a little past time, and once the book is done, the marker lives on to color again and again.
