This remarkable book is a collection of essays from some of the most valuable and visionary intellects of the twentieth-century. They're all talking about sex which is a pretty universally interesting subject. Even right-wing Chritians do it from time to time in order to have children. But this book goes way beyond procreation, locating sex in a social context and showing how it became radicalized, politicized, and changed society as a result. The many great writers from Simone de Beauvoir, to Carl Jung, to Susan Sontag, share their thoughts, and the resulting collection catalogues the leaps into liberation that were the hallmarks of the time; from women reclaiming pornography, to gays in revolt against monogamy, to the average Joe feeling a tad more...experimental. Jeffrey Escoffier has done a terrific job in presenting this work with passioanate enthusiasm and editting it with impecable taste. It's enough to send a nun over the convent wall.

This book is truly wonderful. It is an excellent collection of incisive essays from some of the twentieth centuries most valuable and visionary intellects. And they're all thinking about sex which, let's face it, is a pretty universally interesting subject. Even right-wing Christians do it occasionally to make children. The writings merrily leap beyond procreation, locate sex in the political-social and intellectual arena, and focus on the hot revolutionary decade from the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies. Amidst the steam they document the tremendous strides of liberation taking place -- women becoming orgasmic, gays becoming radicalized, and the average joe experiencing a greater sense of experimentation. It all an exhillarating read. Jeffrey Escoffier's presentation is articulate and passionate and his choice of material is impeccable. It's enough to make a nun leap over a convent wall.

The Sexual Revolution: Yet Another Utopian Heresy.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-15
Why give this book five stars? It is a catalogue of the nihilistic heresy of the twentieth century--a democratic utopia fueled by an orgy of sexual expression and "free love." What is the sexual revolution actually revolting against? Traditional Christian views on morality and along with it, societal and familiar structure. The worst part of this is many people in Third World, non-Christian states view this type of license as representative of America and the West in general, when in fact this is nothing further from the truth. An overemphasis on sexuality took off with Freud and his questionable theories in the late 1800s. The sexual revolution started swinging in the fifties and early sixties as more or less male fashionable dalliance idealized in _Playboy_ magazine. It later became embroiled with accompanying liberalizing factors in Western society during the sixties such as the civil rights movement and spilled over into feminism and the campaign for "gay" rights. This whole thing is anti-Christian, anti-patriarchal, anti-family and anti-Western to the core. It is constantly bombarding the world's populaces who are (un?)fortunate enough to be in some way to experience the television set, rock n' roll CD or Hollywood blockbuster movie. The sexual revolution is at the end of the day a fraud. No sooner than women began to spill into the workplace there was plenty of money to be made by lawyers specializing in sexual harassment lawsuits. Some progress humanity has made. The sexual revolution has its antecedents in history. A few ancient Gnostic sects, because they believed the material world inherently evil, indulged in the pleasures of the flesh because it supposedly did not affect the state of one's spiritual being, a few well documented here. When Christ is ignored, man will instead look for earthly means to bring about the Kingdom of God and eternal bliss on merely human terms. Christ's Kingdom is "not of this world" and will not be experienced in this life, but only in the Age to Come. In the case of the sexual revolution a millennial utopia is attained though the grossest desires of the flesh. Has the sexual revolution failed? Well, people are just as disgruntled as they ever were. At least Marx's economic utopia of the proletariat looked serious and businesslike. It's best to stick to traditional, moderate sexual values, which are especially important to maintain in the face of the world's dissolution and media propaganda. If you want the obscene details then look no further than _Sexual Revolution_. Everybody with some opinion and agenda are mentioned somewhere in here, from Freud, Wilhelm Reich, Norman Mailer to _Time_ Magazine, Larry Flint, Susan Sontag, etc.

I have tried many recipies in this book and have liked them all. After making recipies from this book, my mother had to buy this book as well. If you like cornbread and biscuits, this definitely gives you various recipies. There are recipies for cornbread based one-dish meals, and good dessert recipies. Two of my favorite recipies in this book are for oatmeal scones, and a quick apple (or other fruit) coffee cake.

I grew up with Martha White. It was the brand of flour and cornmeal always in my mother's pantry and we always heard about Martha White on the grand ole opry broadcast. This book has all the kinds of recipes that my mother used to make and it really brings back great tasting memories. I especially love the cornbread chapter. If you've never had good southern cornbread baked in a hot iron skillet, you're really missing something. This is a cookbook that I enjoy reading and using--a lot. Can't wait to start my holiday baking.

As has been stated, this format, original text on the left page, modern text on the right, is extremely helpful, the best of both worlds. The beauty and lyricism of the original text and the quick, easy to read and understand modern text on the right...read this editon, saw the play the next night and appreciated it more than ever before. Scholars may not like this format, but to the public and to the casual, but interested reader, this format can't be beaten.

Book does what it promises

This is a very simple review to write. The book does what it promises. Left hand page is the text of the play, to the right what each character says is given the literary equivalent of subtitles in colloquial english.

For example, a character says about men in a shipwreck: "Not a hair perished. On their sustaining garments not a blemish, but fresher than before."

Confused? Look to the translation on the opposing page: "Nobody was hurt in the slightest. Even their clothes were unstained, and look fresher than before the storm."

Works better than a mere glossary because it puts the meaning of the characters' statements into 21st century English. And Shakespeare is much more enjoyable and comprehensible when you know what is going on.

Baseball Frozen in History
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-19
Perhaps the best thing about the book is not the writing itself, but how the writing freezes teams, players, and moments in time to allow the reader to sense and experience the emotion of the past. Obviously, in a collection of works that spans 50+ years and is entitled "Great Baseball Writing," the reader is treated to some of the best work ever penned about America's Pastime.

Whether the focal point is Ted Williams' post-baseball fishing prowess, Billy Martin, Stan Musial in decline, Vin Scully on the rise, the Philadelphia A's of the 20s or the Oakland A's of the 70s, each of the dozens of stories are tough to set aside and, if age allows, recall some wonderful memories about the game.

The book is divided into sections covering individual players, teams, other figures and events, and all-time greats. No matter your rooting interests, favorite players or most hated rivals, each story from beginning to end succeeds in getting that internal clock started -- the one that counts down each winter to pitchers and catchers.

The book contains just over 50 essays collected from the 50+ years of Sports Illustrated. I own several hundred baseball books and this one slides safely (without a throw)into the top ten.

The writing is generally top notch - truly an honor role of the best: Roger Kahn, Frank DeFord, Peter Gammons, Robert Creamer, George Plimpton - and so many others.

What I loved about this book is that it makes history come alive. Roy Blount's essay isn't about how great Reggie Jackson was, Blount writes about how great he IS. Kahn's essay on Stan the Man Musial captures the essence of a Hall of Famer who somehow is an underrated superstar. Red Sox diehard Johnathan Schwartz crafts a vivid, yet heartbreaking account of the 1978 playoff game.

My favorites? Creamer's essay on Vin Scully which includes a brilliant account of Scully broadcasting from a stadium roof during a freezing winter. Dan Okrent's gem revealing the statistical genius of Bill James years before he hit the mainstream.

Oddly, a couple of the more famous pieces, Rick Rilley's "Heaven Help Marge Schott" really does come off as a hatchet-job on a old lady. Bouton's "Son of Ball Four" is a whiney diatribe. However, those are just two clunkers compared with the 50 that are really good.

A great book, up there with "Veeck as Wreck", "Babe", and "Glory of Their Times". A great gift for baseball fans of all ages and at $17 for 500+ pages - a true bargain.

Baseball heaven!

A fine Compilation of Essays on The Liturgy
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-10
The Liturgy has endured for around 2000 years as the primary means of worship for most Christians. We even have an early Eucharist Liturgy in the Didache, the 2nd century early Church manual. Due to the importance of the liturgy, every scholar and church leader needs to engage its development. This book will help in this task (at least for the scholar or priest/pastor. It's a bit academic to keep the interest of the average person in the pew).

This collection is grouped into three main sections: Theology and Rite, Development of the Liturgy, and Pastoral Orientation. Within the Development of Liturgy section there are seven sub-sections: General Intro, Initiation, Eucharist, Ordination, the Divine Office, the Calendar, and the Setting of the Liturgy. There are 65 essays total including, `A Theology of Worship,' `(Initiation in the) the Modern Period,' `The Anglican Eucharist,' `The History of the Christian Year,' and the ever-elusive `Methodism (and the Eucharist).' The essays cover a wide range of topics, interpretations, and time periods. Both Catholic and Protestant thought are represented nicely, in order to provide a truly useful survey. Also included are numerous glossy black-and-white photos of churches, liturgical manuscripts, and old church manuals.

I highly recommend this book for the liturgical scholar, the early or later Church historian, priests, pastors, and the interested layperson. The scholars are all top-notch, and the book is illuminating and will answer most questions about the Liturgy. The only drawback is that this book is priced rather high, since it is considered a textbook.

The Reasons Why We Do What We Do

The Study of Liturgy provides an easily readible and comprehensive history of the development of Liturgy. This study shows how such things as seasonal colors, vestments,Church calenders, and specific prayers came to be part of liturgical worship. What makes this book so useful is it's quality writing. Here, both students of Liturgy and interested laypersons can find facenating answers to their questions concerning liturgical function and ritual. How does the wearing of vestments impact worship? Why do the participants do what they do and when? What is Lent? What's up with all the bowing and hand gestures? Liturgical worship can be an awesome and majestic expierence. This wonderful book will demystify this type of worship for liturgical church goers and those of more reformed traditions alike. The authors have produced a quality work that can be read by non-technical persons and thoroughly enjoyed.

Liturgy: the study of Christian worship, doctrine and life

Study Liturgy?
The late Dean of St. Paul's, was dining at a high table in Oxford and was asked by his neighbor, a distinguished liturgist, whether he was interested in liturgy.'No,' said the Dean, Neither do I collect postage stamps'; quoted from : Couratin ,Introduction to Liturgy, the Pelican Guide to Modern Theology, Vol. 2. But, even though he criticized Dr. Inge's estimate of liturgical study - a trivial branch of archaeology - his study was part of volume 2 : Historical Theology.

What is liturgy?
Liturgy is neither 'historical' nor a collection of prescribed forms for public worship as per webster's student dictionary. Liturgy is the work of the laity and ministry for their life in the spirit, a real participation in the mystical body of Christ. This is what the outstanding editors of this masterly book reflect in this revision: the last two decades of intense liturgical productivity, ecumenical openness among not only scholars but also ecclesiastical corpus.

Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi
When you browse through this book you will find out about Will Durant's "Mansions" of liturgy, after you read some chapters you will realize the "pleasures of Liturgy". Ecumenical character of this monumental work is maintained by a panel of 25 contributors who seem to believe in what they write, practicing scholars.

The Editors and contributers:
G. Wainwright (Doxology) was my guarantee to the first edition , P. Bradshaw (Daily prayer in the early Church) enhanced my decision to buy an additional revised edition.
Just read the last chapter "Pastoral orientation" to find out how D.Tripp ingeniously sammerizes the real impact of liturgy on the people of the Lord. You may as well start with E.Yarnold's:
"The liturgy of the Faithful",I challenge you to stop reading!
I would love to find K. Ware and G. Bebawi , both of Oxford U. within the future contributers of the next edition, since liturgy is only whole with eastern orthodox authenticity.

At last, the Book: The Study of Liturgy:
I learned from this book more than what I learned in fourty years about the liturgy of the One Holy Universal Apostolic Church. Brought up in the ancient Church of Alexandria as didaskalos (teaching deacon, a tradition of the Alexandrine Megalopolis that started with Origen), I hope you appreciate what liturgy and its study can do for your enlightment, spiritual revival may also be a fruit, but for sure ecumenical fellowship in the Corpus Christi, the ever living.
Look at the table of contents and make your decision, because when you read this book, it will invite you to a new life, an ancient tradition of the real Church that will never be old.
If you have only one book on liturgy it should be this work, but it will be the first love, others will follow , some of those mentioned in the preface.

So the first review is by a guy who has never read the book and the second one is by the author himself, who has obviously never actually read the book either. Besides, if what he says is true he has 20 copies in his basement he is still trying to give away. I've known Seabury for over THIRTY years (not a mere 20) so I was suckered in to actually PAY for the book, and thus Seabury gets himself less than a $1.00 sterling to spend on something useful. I would suggest a new ribbon for his typewriter. Oh, wait! I'm sorry. Actually Seabury paid a grand to have the book published, therefore if he sells another thousand copies, he'll break even! I'm just happy to have done my part. Only 999 copies to go.

Actually, I'm a fan. In fact, in the great American Novel I'm about to write, Seabury Blair, Jr. is going to be a character--just like Elliott Swanson. Those names are just so cool even if the people inhabiting them are sixties left-overs. Now Seabury claims to be a Dave Berry wannabe; I think he's right up there as an Ourdoors Dave Berry, except Dave Berry has two sets of pillows on his bed and never goes outside. So, really, Seabury is the Dave Berry of the Great Northwest. And he will tell you the truth, too, such as the fact that Gore-Tex(r) is a rip off and doesn't work and the undeniable fact that it rains here a lot. Duh. What I'd really like to know, though, is who is B.B. Hardbody, really? May we have a picture, please?

So. Dude. You me an autograph.

What an incredible writer

I haven't yet read the book but I've known and read Seabury for almost 20 years. As my editor for many years Seabury time and again proved what an incredible writer he is. His wit and humor is only equaled by the great Patrick McManus. Blair weaves his way through a story without wasting a single word and involves his readers to paint mental pictures as the story unfolds without knowing you're doing it. His writing is that powerful. I can't wait to get my hands on one. I'm sure it will be a must-read.

Listen: I wrote the book, so you might expect I'd give it 5 stars.
I just thought you'd like to know what it's about. So ...
Here's a book guaranteed to "perk" up your morning coffee break, proving that tall tales can be short. Learn to distinguish a terrorist from a mother and her baby, or how to do the beer curl to get in shape for football season. Meet Stummick, who does nothing but hang out all day, and B.B. Hardbody, a woman of great wisdom and beauty (who would gleefully strangle the author if he wrote anything else). Shake hands with characters like Grizzly Hemingway, a fly fisher who says beer coolers bounce because ale is made with hops. Each story will put a smile on your face and get you through the rest of the day - no matter what kind of geek your boss is.

This is a down to earth book about a family that feels as real as any family in a small town. It is funny and sweet, with just enough suspense and crisis to keep it interesting. I recommend reading the other books in the series, Scent of Lilacs and Orchard of Hope, but you could read this book without reading the others first, because it stands alone as a story all its own. Great Introduction

Review Date: 2008-02-01
My mom purchased a killer used table saw, but lacked the confidence in how to use it. I bought this book as a gift for her and ended up reading it before I gave it to her!

As a girl, I watched my Dad in the shop, but he didn't like questions so I grew bored. Now, I wish I'd have paid attention and tried to use it when I had his tutelage. This book answered a lot of the questions I have about using a table saw and safety. I can now discuss "shop" with my husband and understand what he's talking about. I might even be brave enough to use a table saw now! :) I liked that some of the pictures in the book depicted women using the saw too!

As the other reviewer said, this doesn't go into detail for techniques for specific projects, but will give you an overview of what to look for in a table saw, how to maintain your table saw, and what you can do with your table saw. You won't become a pro overnight, but this book is a good primer to get you started.

This was my first book on table saws, as I am about to buy my first table saw. Being an engineer, I know my way around power tools in general, but I was a bit concerned about proper techniques with regard to safety, how to prevent kickback, and some of the finer points of using the saw. This book has all the basic information - good for beginners - and has great captions on each and every (color) picture that help explain the equipment and concepts very well. This book is not for those who wish to do fancy woodworking and intricate furniture building - I'd recommend a book that describes the details and procedures for the various types of cuts/options in more depth. This book is great for anything short of that, highly recommended, a good comprehensive primer.

Plus there are plenty of tips to make sawing easier and accurate. Great book if you're a beginner with a table saw.
