Our high school youth group watched this DVD and it generated a huge discussion about faith and how we, as Catholics, are
called to live out our faith. It's a real blessing to be able to share this type of spiritual witness with kids. The players'
faith was genuine and sincere. They showed the kids that even with a very strong faith they're still not perfect and need
encouragement and prayer every day. Mike Sweeney's story about how long it took for him to ask forgiveness was especially
moving. This video would be great even for non-Catholics.

I love this book! Being diagnosed with Type II Diabetes is absolutely overwhelming - there are so many new things to learn
and so many changes to make in how you eat and how you LIVE! This book takes you by the hand, calms you down and shows you
where to begin. The title says it all - Change One - and that's exactly how the book proceeds. Walks you through the changes
you need to make one at a time so the changes will become lasting ones. Lots of good information on Type II Diabetes itself
as well as on diet and exercise. And plenty of great recipes, including a section on "makeovers" for old favorites like Macaroni
& Cheese. I loved this book immediately and showed it to my doctor. She was so impressed she bought a copy for her office
and now recommends it to all her newly diagnosed diabetics!

Not just for diabetics! My husband is hypoglycemic and we have had wonderful results following this diet plan. He had several
very frightening incidences where he crashed severely and they were very clearly a direct response to food. I turned to this
book for help and since we started this diet he has not crashed once. Although I have neither health condition I decided to
follow the plan too since it seems so smart and simple. The concept of dividing your meal into 1/2 vegetables, 1/4 starches
or carbs, and 1/4 protein is a brilliant idea and when it comes to actually making meals this is very easy to follow. You
can still eat all the food you love but sometimes the cooking method needs tweaking and you will have to change the portion
sizes but you'll catch on very quickly. The transitions are easier than you think. And you'll feel better after only a few
days. My husband immediately noticed a change for the better, he woke up with more energy, felt more rested, and was able
to get more work done. He just feels good. Plus, we've both lost weight while still enjoying our favorite meals that needed
only slight modifications. The best part, we don't feel like we're on a diet! This book will change the way you look at food,
cooking methods, and portions and you'll be glad it did. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel better
and loose weight, whether you are a diabetic or not.

I love all the Klutz books. This one is great because my 2nd graders like it as well as my 3 year old. They all just love
making different scenes and figures with the foam shapes. There are lots of different shapes, some that you don't normally
see in foam shape varieties. You can order more from Klutz too! You can even add googly eyes and draw extra things with
a pen. The possibilities are endless! Using a glue stick is great because it isn't all that messy. Overall, a great product!

This book is great! It comes with a packet of zillions (over 200, it says) of precut foam pieces in a wide variety of colors
and shapes, and a glue stick. The book has very little text, so it's fine for pre-readers. It's all colorful illustrations
of different pictures a kid can make with the foam cutouts, sparking their imagination and showing them how to do it. Some
of the illustrations are numbered steps showing how to make a particular picture, such as a simple car or a face. Most show
a completed critter, vehicle, or whatever, but the illustrations are so clear that you can see what shapes were used to make
each item.
On the child development front, it develops art intelligence - the ability to see how to portray a 3-dimensional object with a 2-dimensional picture; spatial reasoning (like Legos or jigsaw puzzles - how do parts fit together?); fine motor skills manipulating the small pieces; and the usual benefits of preschool crafts - the kid learns to use standard tools such as glue stick and paper. What I especially like, though, is that a preschooler can learn from it that books can teach us how to do something. He (she) can figure out for himself (herself) how to do something by looking at the illustrations even if (s)he's too young to read. If (s)he asks you how to make a lion, tell him (her) to go look it up in the book!
The age range is 4 and up, per the publisher. Amazon.com says 4-8. That looks right. The small pieces are a choking hazard for children under 3. A kid needs the intelligence and finger skills of a 4-year-old to fully enjoy this book, counting skills to follow numbered steps. Somewhat older kids would enjoy it, too, as long as they're at an age where they still enjoy this sort of arts and crafts - elementary school age - and don't mind a preschool book. I bought it for a Christmas gift for a 4 yr. old. Waiting for Christmas ....

Perhaps the Best Devotional Book Ever for Christians
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-07
Review Date: 2004-08-07
I have the 1947 Harper & Row publication of the book Christian Perfection. It is arguably the best devotional masterpiece
ever put forth on this planet. It is a shame that this book is so hard to find. Contemporary translations, including Meditations
on the Heart of God and Talking with God, are quite inspirational, but they only provide a taste of the heartfelt, scholarly
elaborations that only the pious Francois Fenelon could put forth.
Though this clergyman lived centuries ago, Francois Fenelon could deliver religious themes that are irrespective of time. Christian Perfection is a most apt title for this book. What makes it so special is that it brings to focus what it means to take up one's cross, what it means to seek the Lord in prayer, and what it takes to maintain a heart devoted to godly service, even when the human heart is inclined to do otherwise.
Fenelon touched on key points about human nature and how it can come into conflict with vows previously made to serving God with utmost zeal and fervor. His insights, to this day, communicate in this volume like letters to anyone who is faced with doubts about his or her dedication and commitment to serving the Lord; they essentially say, "I know your struggles, doubts, and fears, my friend; but know that the Lord your God loves you perfectly and will use His perfection to make good use of you, though you are imperfect."
Lately, I have been reading classics about time management, priority organization, and the daily habits of mind that lead to success in life. If a Christian devotional publication could meld in these perspectives from a Scriptural point of view, it is this one.
For the past few years, there have been concerns about how people are suddenly finding a sudden, albeit maniacal, interest in religion or how some have become so involved with born again charismatic movements that they are "wearing their faith on their sleeve". I share those concerns, and I think that many of these latest trends are disturbing, for they seem geared to establishing legalistic modes of thought that are put forth by evangelists who have forsaken traditional doctrines and who want to influence the masses, telling them what to think and what to believe without giving them room to analyze or critique.
Fortunately, Christian Perfection teaches or communicates in a traditional tone that reveres God's holiness and that acknowledges man's shortcomings on a very intimate and personal level.
Francois Fenelon's humility is a trait that is lacking in so many circles of faith. I wish that this book could be in wider circulation, because it communicates in a tone that is of a sincere, caring person. Unfortunately, many of our so-called Christian leaders of today claim to have special visions or revelations about what is right while simultaneously undercutting public and private figures with the brand of almost Phariseelike behavior that Jesus preached against.
For anyone who is sick and tired of seeing in person or on TV those individuals, including the supposed followers of Christ who communicate to others that they are more entitled to forming opinions or pursuing happiness than those around them, this book is for you. Fenelon made an utmost attempt to make his writings compatible with the Bible, not the other way around.

I must admit that before offering my copy for sale, I read every salient word. Without a doubt Fenelon was a master of devotional
writng in his time, as well as today. Perhaps only rivaled by Loyola, and De Sales?
Get this book if you can...supplies are sporadic. Watch as your devotional time sprouts with fresh insights and vigor.

Fenelon's thoughts as presented in this devotional classic are remarkably practical and applicable today just as in the 17th
century! He covers such subjects as the use of time, recreation in the Christian life, facing temptation, and knowing God's
presence. Part 2 of this book is a simple yet profound look at the creation doctorine, justice, atomement, and divine love
- not as a systematic theology, but as a living faith. Fine inspiration for Christians who hunger and thirst after righteousness!

I also read this book over twenty years ago. After a couple of house moves, I have no idea what happened to my copy so I
decided to buy another one and read it again. My mother-in-law left medical school to serve as a nurse with the American
Army in World War I, and I have always felt that, if she had written about it, this might have been her story also. Along
with the stories from World War II and all the other experiences of nurses in the other five wars in the past hundred years,
this story should be read and remembered. After the stories of the great battles and heroism and cowardice, the nurses are
left to pick up the pieces. This book should be on the required list of every high school and college in this country. Maybe
if we saw war from the viewpoint of the medical personnel, we wouldn't allow ourselves to get into the kind of thankless situation
our country is in now.

I read this book in 1988 and have never forgotten it. This may be the most moving, heart-wrenching, beautifully-written book
I have ever read. It is a diary, from 1913 to 1917. It opens when the author was under 21, on Jan. 1, 1913, progresses thru
that year and on into the war. This is a wrenching book, vivid,super-poignant--written with great beauty. I am unable to
convey how strongly it affected me and it remains one of the most exceptional things I have ever read.

The actual diaries kept by Vera Brittain, which were the basis for the much better known Testament of Youth. As such they
are even more personal and direct in conveying the emotions and experiences of this period during the Great War.
One of the only two books I have ever read which when I had finished I went straight back to the beginning and read through
all over again.

mess of a bedroom but the ideas are straight forward, fun and easy to put into practice. She immediately read several of
the sections and went about setting her space up into 'zones'. We have done several of the craftier ideas together, spending
time doing a fun project, while all the while working towards a more organized space.

We first saw this book as a reference source in an art gallery that was selling original Rembrandt etchings. The book provides
an explanation of how the etchings were produced and provides photos of all (found) Rembrandt etchings in their original sizes.
Since we were not very familiar with Rembrandt's etchings or with the differences in the appearance of originals produced
later using the same plates, this book helped provide us with a means to evaluate the ones being sold at the gallery.
The book is also priced well and makes a great coffee table book.

Rembrandt didn't invent etching, but he very nearly reinvented it. He did more with mixed processes, especially drypoint and
etching, than anyone before him. He was also among the first to use etching as a drawing medium, giving it a freedom it had
never had before.
One distinctive feature of this book is that each print is reproduced full size. That gives the viewer unique insight into each work - was it small enough to fit the hand, or so big it had to be worked on a bench or table? Just how fine was that texture of lines? Even the biggest prints are presented full size, in a set of oversized sheets that come with the book.
Probably hundreds of authors have written about Rembrandt's art, especially his drawing and etchings. I don't have much to add except what I personally have learned from his work. As well as light and dark, Rembrandt modulates a picture in levels of detail. Look at B76, for example, "Christ presented to the people." The central figures have expression and nuance. Outliers, like those towards lower left are barely sketched in. It's a fascinating way for the artist to guide the viewer's attention.
One author (I forget who) was asked to name the finest printmaker of all time. He started by eliminating Rembrandt, on the grounds that this master went so far past any mortal skill that he was outside of merely human history. This book shows just where that claim came from.

One author (I forget who) was asked to name the finest printmaker of all time. He started by eliminating Rembrandt, on the grounds that this master went so far past any mortal skill that he was outside of merely human history. This book shows just where that claim came from.

Although budget-priced, this edition is a winner, in my opinion. All of Rembrandt's etchings are reproduced on a heavy-stock
paper that is of the proper degree of shine necessary to bring out the full, crisp nuances of the etchings. The result are
vividly life-like etchings that show all their intricate details. Faces and people come alive, almost jumping out of the
page. The Dover people were right in thinking that only a shiny, heavy-stock paper could bring out the full details of the
etchings, to create reproductions that are as closely realistic as the original impressions. Also, almost all of the impressions
seem of the proper degree of sharpness and darkness necessary to bring out their details. My only problem is that the book
is somewhat heavy and bulky, but this is the price to pay for the heavy-stock paper needed for excellent reproductions, each
of the same size as the originals. There are also some extra inserts in the book that reproduce in full size several etchings
that are too big to fit life-size within the dimensions of the book. The inclusion of these inserts is considerate on the
part of the authors, showing their dedication to bringing out the full artistry of the etchings, and ensuring that the common
budget book-buyer has full access to these etchings in their most vivid, almost museum-like form.

This is a great comprehensive guide. But if you're already energy conscious, there's not much new in this publication. For
the general homeowner, it's definitely a must-have. Here are the most significant facts: new window replacements don't
usually pay for themselves; CFL bulbs save a ton of energy and reduce carbon emissions at a low cost; front load washers save
water but not much energy; your home loses energy through electrical outlets and switches; central cooling and heating is
most efficient (don't use space heaters); and upgrading your central a/c and heater may be economical.
If you buy only one book for home energy efficiency, this is it.

This is an excellent and complete overview to the improvements you can make in your home to make it more comfortable and more
energy efficient. By following it's advice, you can improve your efficiency by up to 30% - depending on the age and condition
your home is - I've personally experienced 27% savings on a 2800 sq ft home built in 1989. This has been a hobby and passion
of mine for over a year, I've used various resources on the Internet. This one book covers all the topics I've discovered
elsewhere, educates the issues well, instructs how to make the efficiency changes based on expert experience, all in a layman's
language that's easy to understand and follow. I wish they would have published it a year ago - would have saved me significant
amount of time that I've spent researching and learning the hard way.

This book covers the basics of what consumers need to know to reduce their utility bills and reduce their consumption of Greenhouse
Gases. The one section that is outdated refers to heating your house using cord wood. Please do not cut down trees and burn
them to heat your house! Trees are the one carbon-capture technology that actually exists, everything else is smoke-and-mirrors.
We need trees to help clean up the mess we are making of the environment!

I picked up this book on a recommendation at Otakon this weekend. I'm already finished reading it! OMG, it was so good, I
couldn't put it down. I was saddened by the fact, when I went to check out the publisher's web page, that they had shut down.
But "wow" is all I can say. Good reading. :)

I bought this book at a convention, thinking I'd have some good reading for the trip home. But when I opened it up, I was
hooked! I stayed up until 2am that night, reading one great story after another. There are sixteen stories in this anthology,
all very well-written, and in a broad range of genres. Some of them contain smut, and some of it is quite graphic, but there
are several stories here that are sweet and fluffy, too (dare I say innocent?). All the stories have a heavy emphasis on romance,
which is what sets this book apart from things like the "best of gay erotica" collections. Sex scenes, when they appear, take
place after lots of plot and character development, and are written very tastefully.
This book's main weakness, I think, is its lack of focus. There's no theme tying the stories together, no unified style, or even any common element besides "boys' love". It was especially noticeable for me because I read the whole thing in one sitting; a casual reader who samples one or two stories at a time may not even notice. In any case, the stories are still very good, and I didn't feel the lack of focus was bad enough to knock the rating down from five stars.

I picked up Connections at Katsucon last weekend, and I just wanted to drop a note to say how much I enjoyed it. I found every
story enjoyable, and just as Kellie promised when she sold it to me, it was very well-rounded, with a number of different
stories and styles. I'm very glad I stopped by to pick it up, and I am recommending it to everyone I know who shares my literary
tastes.

If you think all athletes today are law breaking, ego maniacs, you have to watch the DVD "Champions of Faith." It will renew your faith as well as your faith in many of the professional ball players.
This is the first installment of a series and I can't wait for the next production.
