He fully understands the relationship between collaborative technology as it relates to project management in a large enterprise environment.

As he so well points out... "the speed which one implements technology relating to process management in order to accomplish large tasks" will differentiate success from failure. This is a "must read" for senior management if they wish to survive in a complex "project management", collaboration /Internet environment. How to utilize technology to accomplish this is the key!!

A great resource for management.

If you are coming from an APICS viewpoint on ERP, this book is consultant-speak only. It is however a prime mover on a very important issue, how will those 1996-1999 implemented ERP systems move forward now that Y2k spending has been digested in Fortune 2000 companies?

An excellent overview of a very complex and timely subject. I especially liked the ERP/E-Business Matrix and the discussion of regions, companies and assumptions underlying it. I found the discussion of "adaptive" vs. "disruptive" changes helpful and insightful. Very concise and to-the-point, a quick & easy read, but one which should be internalized over a longer period of time. Covered a lot of ground in less than 200 pages. Overall, an excellent addition to my bookshelf.

Would, however, have liked to see a bibliography & some footnotes for the statistics cited

The book provides you all you need to know about the implementation of ERP and it'll greatly help build your background on this issue. The book is not about "how" to implement for a specific software but is about "why" and "what" you should know about implemenation. You need retain sufficient knowledge to help your company make wise decisions, rather than let consultants make decision for you and your company. I am a recent MBA graduate and I found this book is a great supplement to the area that I lack from my education.

Learn How to Unveil the Mysteries Surrounding ERP

Review Date: 2001-07-19
For years, companies and individuals alike have struggled to understand ERP concepts and systems. Many books have been written to assist the readers with everything from selecting an ERP solution to implementing the solution. None have addressed these issues as completely as this book.

The simple, concise, easy-to-understand way in which the author, Travis Anderegg, presents the information slowly `strips' away the layers of mystery and misunderstanding that have often been associated with ERP projects - small or large. Not only does a reader gain insight into the history of ERP but also is introduced to definitions and terminology associated with Enterprise Resource Planning.

It is a known fact that approximately 80% of all ERP projects fail. Many times, companies will blame the vendor (they misled us), the software (it does not fit our business), the consultant (they should have told us not to pick this package), etc. Often times, no one was `truly' at fault; it is a matter of not understanding how to plan, select, implement, maintain, and take ownership of an ERP system. This book covers all these areas from the initial decision to consider a company's ERP software strategy through planning, evaluation, decision, negotiation, implementation, and change management. Various critical success factors are identified throughout the chapters.

It also provides diagrams, charts, and questions to aid the reader in `gleaning' the pertinent points from the chapters. The book also points out the `pitfalls' and how to avoid making costly mistakes. The concepts presented in this book can be applied not only to ERP but also to other major IT procurements, such as HR/PR systems, CRM, and DPM. This book can also prepare individuals to pass the CIERP examination and be recognized as CIERP (certified implementer of enterprise resource planning) certified.

As the book shows ERP is very much a people system - not just software. The more educated people are, in regards to ERP, the more likely that a company will be successful. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone who is or will be involved with Enterprise Resource Planning:

· Business executives, senior decision makers, IT/IS managers, Department managers, and Project managers who are or will be in the market for an ERP solution

· Consultants, industry analysts, software vendors, and their staff who are in some way connected with the sales of ERP, as it provides insight into the buying cycle and the "contortions" that companies go through when purchasing this type of technology

· College and University level professors or students in Marketing, Information Systems/Technology and Project Management

This book is filled with all the knowledge anyone would need for preparing and successfully implementing Enterprise Resource Planning.

I wish if i can give this book 100 stars. Amazing Book.....

A must for everybody who is involved in ERP project. once you start reading it you don't want to stop. so smooth and understandable, the writing is very clear and the graphics will help you a lot to understand each chapter. There are 20 chapters each will take you automatically to the other i highly recommend to start reading chapter by chapter. chapter 1-3 gives detailed information about ERP definition and differences between ERP & ERM, ERP concepts and design, and ERP functional modules.

Implementation details are cover in chapters 4 to 8, starting with life cycle, building your project team, prototype and testing and other important implementation issues. I think this is the best book ever written about ERP, don't waste your time searching for other books. You will find everything related to the ERP in "ERP: A-Z Implementer's Guide For Success"

This is a great introduction to the world of ERP. After reading the book I bought copies for all the members of the team implementing the new ERP at my company. It helps you get a handle on the whole process from 20,000 ft, and makes the idea of totally changing the company not so scary. The only problem I had with the book is that the binding was terrible. The book fell apart on my first reading. But I liked it so much, I put in in a two ring binder.

If you have been asked to work on your company's ERP and are not sure what you got into, this is the book for you.

One of the most complete and sensible guides I've read

The 20 chapters in this remarkable book make this a true A to Z implementation guide. The author starts with a clearly written intoduction to ERP and follows this with a detailed overview of concepts and design. The third chapter covers functional modules that need to be incorporated into ERP systems, which completes the foundation.

Chapters 4 through 8 cover the implemention details, beginning with life cycles and sequences, addressing project teams and transition strategies, and the nuts and bolts considerations of data conversion, prototyping and testing. The information in these chapters is a good basis for an implementation work breakdown structure.

I liked the chapters on organizational change management and consultants, which are critical success factors for implementing an ERP system. I also thought that the chapter on project planning sessions was a highlight of this book and something that anyone who is involved in managing the implementation needs to carefully read.

The remainder of the book covers developing a request for proposal and evaluating vendor responses, total quality management, ROI and other factors that are extremely important to ERP (or any system) implementation project.

Some of the things that make this book invaluable include: (1) clear writing and innovative use of graphics to display relationships, comparisons and workflow; (2) the fact that each chapter can stand alone as a focused and complete discussion of the topic covered, and (3) the common sense approach taken by the author.

I strongly recommend that this book be augmented by Scorecard System For World Class Enterprise Resource Management by the same author. These two books combined with provide you with all of the information you need to select and successfully implement an ERP system that fully meets your requirements.

Selecting Warehouse Software

Review Date: 2008-01-21
This publication continues to be the best available source of information about warehouse software. The second edition is an improvement over the first with a 55 page addition, and new material including diagrams and pictures in every chapter. A chapter about implementation has been added. Warehouse operators who are considering the purchase of new software need to study this book.

Great overview of WMS

Review Date: 2006-02-25
This is a very relevant and concise overview of warehouse management system evaluation and implementation processes. Obal does a great job of giving comprehensive evaluation criteria and pointing out potential "gotchas" you might face in an evaluation process. The book is geared towards more complex operating environments so smaller warehouse operations may find the RPF approach a bit overwhelming. However, it is a great educational tool that highlights the numerous possibilities with available technology. The book lacks a serious discussion on the critical nature of the relationship between the warehouse operation and the software company. Access to key resources (both electronically and geographically), investment of time on the part of the provider (billed and unbilled), vendor expertise/advisory capabilities and value added options (such as remote hosting) are not highlighted and could play a critical part in your implementation.

Overall, this book is a great educational tool. It is well worth the money for any organization looking to embark on a WMS project or wanting to improve an existing implementation.

An Enthusiastic Endorsement for Phil!!!

I came to the project on an executive level having little to no expertise in Warehouse Management Software(WMS). From the onset of my reading "Selecting Warehouse Software from WMS & ERP Providers" it proved to be everything and far more than I could have ever begin to appreciate. I now had the necessary information to mentally order an understanding of the difference between the WMS and ERP products, and a quiet ensued from what had felt like a swirling flood, leaving me with the sensation of being carried away in the wash of which software vendors, what product differential and what were the essentials.

From here I was able to move, and more competently frame the requirements for our own organizational needs. The author approached this written work with a sensitivity of the immense challenge the average person would face when taking on the warehouse universe and its technical requirements, by him demonstrating a simplistic and readable way of presenting the invaluable information contained within the work. The section identifying WMS software vendors and ERP supply chain software providers is simply priceless, and worth the cost of the book all by itself. I have since purchased more of the series and can now intelligently approach "applying the right software solution" with added confidence.

First step in your WMS project.

Review Date: 2004-09-27
This book should be the first step in your WMS project. With the variety of functionality now offered by WMS providers it can be a daunting task to try to understand what a WMS does and (more importantly) what a WMS can do for your operation. Not only does the author cover standard functionality of WMS, he takes it a step further by pointing out "Differentiators" and "Common Deficiencies". These insights can prove to be incredibly valuable during the selection and implementation processes. The book is essentially a detailed report on WMS functionality with an additional section on the selection process (including step-by-step instructions and sample documents). The format makes it easy to simply open the book to a section on a specific type functionality and quickly get up to speed on key issues related to that topic.
Yes, it may seem a little pricey, but in the context of the overall costs associated with a WMS project, it's a minuscule price to pay to increase your chance of getting it right.

I would recommend is from the 3rd 2002 design and emotion conferance. It may be 5 years old, but the book contains papers all based on emotional design. Split into subsections, which are

Generative tools,
Evauative Tools,
Emotive Effects of Visual Properties,
Emotive Effects of the Other Senses,
From Design to Emotion,
Affective Usabilty,
Attachment,
Product Character,
Theoretical and Ethical issues,
and
Emotion in Design.

There is a paper for just about everthing, and there are only 4 - 5 pages long.

Review Date: 2008-04-16
The author has done a brilliant job in this 2nd Edition. He explains the differences of mySAP ERP SD, its new functionality, and includes topics relevant to the ECC5 and ECC6 versions of SAP. He covers tools like SAP Query and the book is full of time saving tips and advice.

There is an appendix of nearly every transaction code related to SD, as well as in depth steps on how to configure the backbone of SD in SAP, that is pricing, sales documents, Basic functions etc. This book also has brief information on peripheral integration topics such as EDI and user exits in SAP SD.

This book is far better than his previous best seller, with better print and screenshots, I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a book explaining how to configure SAP SD, and to advanced users of the SD module.

This is a fascinating book that attempts to decode SAP's strategy and the reader will get the glimpse of impending consolidation and why many software firms such as i2, high jump, etc have put themselves up on sale. Most likely, days of best of breed software companies are over. It is now a platform war where platforms are being optimized. Barriers are being created to enable higher pricing and fewer IT engineering resources to do the work. Therefore, I believe that companies should evaluate the platform before listening to the consultants; professors; and best of breed companies trying to sell a solution etc.

Excellent Overview

This catalog view of the work of Dirk Van Erp is without equal - the photographs alone, of Van Erp, his wife, children, and co-worker Craftsmen...to say nothing of the views of his shop and salesroom, are priceless. The book fills a large gap in the public record of the seminal work of this, the second-most important Arts and Crafts figure in North America (after - or before, if you will, Elbert Hubbard).

It has been estimated that there are less than two thousand extant Van Erp pieces in the world today. I feel that a reading of Dorothy Lamoreux's excellent book will make we happy owners - and the rest - appreciate the passion that went into their creation.

Buy this book. STEAL this book. Read it, surely.

Excellent book for all SAP consultants who need an overview of SAP FI
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-05
Being a Procure to Pay consultant(Certified in SRM / MM / FI) i was looking for books on FI to improve my skillset on FI. I initially purchased the book "Optimize your ERP Financials Implementation - Shivesh Sharma" but returned back the book with exchange to other book as the book did not contain any topics on optimization as was advertised and also the purpose for configuration is not explained properly.

Then i purchased this book "Discover SAP ERP Financials" by Manish Patel ($40.00 from SAP-PRESS). The book has surpassed the expectations. I thought this would be very basic but the author did an excellent job in explaining the topics with the latest optimization techniques. The case studies and the new optimization techniques are described in a great detail. Though this book does NOT talk about configuration in SAP , but it gives enough knowledge as to WHY you need to configure. In contrast the book by Shivesh Sharma does not have any optimization techniques /case studies and no configuration logic.

If you are an MM consultant and would like to venture into AP, then you would be thrilled to read the chapters 3 (Payables) , 4 (Taxation) and 5 (Bank Transactions). Manish Patel mentions about the new optimization techniques including e-payments through ORBIAN and OFX (Open Financial Exchange).

SD consultants would love the topic on processing incoming payments through LockBox processing and the EBS (Electronic Bank Statement) processing with the details on Interpretation Algorithm and Search Strings. An excellent case study on how a civic government achieved a better control on working capital management by processing the property tax payments through Lockbox. There is a separate chapter on Collections, Dispute and Credit Management.

HR consultants would appreciate the integration of major reservation systems AMADEUS , SABRE , GALILEO with SAP Travel management. It is interesting to read how the miles earned through flights is used for future reservations. Payroll accounting and detailed case study on a corporate plans to implement travel management sums it up.

A must have book for SAP consultants of all modules. Also useful to new FI/CO consultants.

It is now time for SAP-PRESS to come up with separate books on each of the sub-modules in FI ( AP/AR , Asset Accounting , FI Planning/Consolildation/New G/L ...etc). Manish Patel should team up with experts in each domain and come up with these books with Practical Approach.
