A simple thought from a simple man, spoken in the midst of the worst riot in Los Angeles in 30 years. A quote still remembered today almost 15 years later. For all his faults and lack of pedigree, Rodney King got it right. Inspite of our differences, "We Have To Get Along"...

"Diversity At Work", is a blueprint for doing just that.

As a manager for a large retail company, I am faced with this dilemma everyday. How do you bring a group of people from all walks of life and different backgrounds together for the common good of the company? How do you hold them together long enough to get your job done effectively? How do you motivate people individually, while still staying true to the objectives of the group?

Dr. Gerhardt's book was an eye opener in changing my thinking on how I deal with these issues at work. It would be difficult to explain to you without reading his book first.

We seem to only notice the differences in people these days. We've forgotten the bond between people that makes us whole.

Paul Gerhardts book reminded me, that in spite of our differences, we are all part of a larger family. One to be treated with respect, personel, or professional. Quite frankly, he sold me.

I'd bet that I could now find at least 5 things of common interest with anyone in the world in under 15 minutes. This is how you build a bridge...you begin by starting to build it.

Read this book. It will help you in ways I can't explain.

Matt Hillson.

I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that Jamie Shaw wrote DOG TO DOG COMMUNICATION. I used to be embarrassed by my dog's behavior--he was uncontrollable around other dogs--but after reading the extremely helpful information I can now bring my dog anywhere and he's a real class act. Shaw's techniques really WORK! They're highly effective, yet gentle. Please, your dog and the dogs of your friends and neighbors beg you to buy this book.

the perfect, handy reference to Cesar Millan's Show and Teaching

Review Date: 2008-10-29
This nifty guide to National Geographic's Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan is perfect for anyone from the casual viewer to the dedicated fan/dog owner who wishes to improve his or her (pack) leadership skills.

The book contains a summary of each episode: namely, the problem(s) shared by the dog(s) and its owners, what methods Cesar uses to overcome the dog's issues and the owners' issues, how he develops the owners' leadership skills, re-unites owner with dog for a successful "re-union" where the owner demonstrates leadership mastery over the dog, and then provides a quick follow-up of what happened after Cesar left; i.e. if the owner(s) were able to continue Cesar's way with the dog(s), whether Cesar had to return, or if the dog(s) had to be given up for adoption.

The book is divided into sections classified by problems behaviors; for instance, food aggression, barking, and so forth. When searching for the exact episode to view for the solution to a specific problem, this is the ideal, and perhaps, the only approach. In this, Milio's organization is to be praised.

Overall, this is an excellent resource for all dog fanciers and owners--not merely those who are fans of Cesar Millan's show and philosophy.

I find this book very helpful to the dog owner. You can find the episode that matches your dog's behavior, which can give you tips on what to do with your dog, learning how Cesar works with the dog and the dog's owner basically learning how to interact with the dog,and doing what can keep the dog,as Cesar says,"calm and balanced". A Great book I recommend it!

The fast way to find Cesar's Solutions for Problem Dogs!

I am SO grateful to have this particular tool by Cesar Millan to go with the Season DVDs. "Dog Whisperer Show Season 3" DVD is supposed to be released around July 8th, 2008, I hear.

I have had a large (2600 member) Yahoo email list for over 3 years now. This list has had over 14,500 members, who have used different elements of Cesar's solutions to solve the problem behaviors of their dog successfully, as well as to understand how to prevent them in the future. One of the greatest challenges we have faced there, is remember which episodes covers what kind of problems, with what kind of dogs in what kind of conditions. The episode guide makes finding those answers so fast now!

I am not sure which elements of this book I love more. The dog breed guide so when I am looking for problems Cesar has addressed by breed so I could just refer to that list. "Two days ago, someone was asking about their non-stop braying beagle Cesar solutions and they said they watched the TV show on Nat Geo. In just minutes, I had a list of the 6 episodes from Season 1-3. I LOVE my Season DVD's also available here but am constantly frustrated that there are only two line descriptions and in the 317 episodes from just those three seasons, I CANNOT remember which episode I saw what solution!

Having the Season 1-3 Episode guide solved that because NOW I was able to not only talk about which episodes were specific to beagles "who do have some - uhhhh, unique breed challenges that most urban people are not skilled enough to solve - g" but I was able to specifically refer to my top two favorite solutions for this kind of dog, that was used in the specific episodes for them to be able to watch and SEE what they could do themselves!

I also LOVE to read or write about the follow up stories of the successes that the dog owners have had including the simple recognition of the fact that the dog requires more work then they were willing to give and the subsequent successful re-homing into a forever home with people who understand how to work with that kind of dog to simply changing the HUMAN behavior to change the dog behavior into the desired outcome!

Since I work with so many rescue dogs and dog groups, I actually bought a second book to carry with me in the car so I can look up solutions BECAUSE if you go to the video page of the National Geographic Website you can see video clips of these same episodes to go with the book so you don't even NEED to GET the Nat Geo channel!!!

This book solves the problem that comes because the video clips only show the solution/result. I you have the book you can now get the whole overview, background not even discussed in the show and behind the scenes information to get context!

Then, if you get the free software Miro, you can download these clips into your computer to look up whether you are online or not or if you have an IPOD, to download those whole episodes to watch, based on what you identify that you need to look at from the information in this book! Finally you can amble over to youtube and see other video about successful Cesar's way examples.clips, including mine (under /cjanderson, where I show ten concrete examples of how I have used Cesar's Pack Leader techniques that I learned from the episodes discussed in THIS book's pages to help rehab over 25 problem dogs who were going to be euthanized if someone didn't step forward to help, and the someone who stepped forward here with those dogs was just me, a dog lover who watched and learned from the episodes listed in this wonderful guide!

It has never been easier to show someone else the simple and often easily and safely replicatable solutions to change problem dog behaviors using this guide with the online free videos of Cesar's Dog Whisperer Shows!

Something that is partcularly nice about it as well as the other books like it is that they don't talk in ages but in stages. This way you can follow your child, and not some outward source that determines what they should be doing and when.

It is the particular selection of the material being complete, clear and compact at the same time. It is a pleasure to browse through the book and to read a chapter now and then.

A nice textbook on Electromagnetic Waves

Review Date: 1999-12-23
Maxwell's Equations are like the seven notes: they are always the same, but the music you can play with them changes very much depending on how you combine them. This seems the case also commenting the book of Prof. Carlo G. Someda "Electromagnetic waves".

The topics included in the book range from fundamental theorems to propagation in homogeneous isotropic or anisotropic materials, antenna theory, metallic or dielectric waveguides, diffraction and coherence.

Not many figures are present in the text, to illustrate the concepts or the consequences, and this may be a problem for younger readers, grown up with hypertexts and interactive videogames. However, readers can this way concentrate on a key feature, in my opinion, of the book: the attempt to evidence the differences, and the consequences, of the various models (electromagnetic theory, scalar approach, geometrical optics) used to describe physical phenomena. The generalized use of numerical models available nowadays implies, in fact, the risk of forgetting the simplifying hypothesis they assume, while critical use of these tools is necessary.

In conclusion, the music you can hear, reading this book, sounds good, at least to my ears, and I suggest you listen to it, if you are looking for a basic textbook on electromagnetic theory.

Electromagnetic Waves for the Scientist
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-03
The author, an experienced teacher and researcher in microwaves, lasers and optics, delivers a valuable, clearly written and pleasant to read text that covers all aspects of electromagnetic theory relevant to researchers in the field. The background of the book are university courses taught by Prof. Someda in Italy, but the book is not just a collection of lectures. The author presents a coherent and balanced survey that is enriched with answers to frequently asked questions by students in the field. This has enlarged significantly the volume, and brings it closer to the needs and expectations of modern scientists looking for a solid theoretical treatment of electromagnetism. This treatment addresses common issues in current applications such as in telecommunications, photonics, radar and sensing. The book is well organised, with a structure and an extensive subject index that are helpful in finding the particular part covering the reader's need for information. The first three chapters provide the basic framework of the equations for e.m. fields, of the time-harmonic vector polarisation, discuss some key general theorems, like reciprocity and equivalence theorem, and cover the question of spatial symmetries in cases where the field determination can be simplified. Chapters 4 to 10 refer to the propagation of e.m. waves in regions that contain no sources. A detailed discussion of the homogeneous Helmholtz equation is given, as a means to unify the approaches, based on e.m. potentials, to treat both propagation and radiation problems. Plane waves in isotropic and anisotropic media, wave packets, waves on transmission lines, waveguides with conducting walls, and resonant cavities are the subjects of this part.

The last part, chapters 11 to 14, is devoted to the treatment of electromagnetism in the presence of field sources. Green's function methods are discussed in every detail. Antenna theory is outlined with the help of numerous examples. The topic of diffraction is discussed comprehensively and examples illustrate the theoretical approaches to Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction cases. The last chapter is intended as an introduction to radiation statistics and coherence theory, a bonus to those interested in situations in-between completely deterministic and completely random variables.

The book brings a fresh insight into electromagnetism. Talented university students will extract fast the most practical methods to answer their questions. Physicists on the front of research will find a text suitable to most of their needs that can be a successful tool to address problems in a rapidly evolving and demanding application environment. The examples are wisely chosen but wouldn't it have been better for the book to include also other examples that are closer to engineering problems in order to present practical bridges between theory and application?

Electromagnetic Waves is a valuable addition to the literature. The topics covered in the 600 pages offer more than the general subjects of interest to the modern researcher. They are treated in a clear and concise manner. The writing is enjoyable and demonstrates the author's long experience as a university professor and research team leader. It succeeds in motivating the reader to look further than in basic text books on electromagnetism because it presents the subject from a view that has common grounds in today's many applications of e.m. theory.

I recently bought Engineering Electromagnetics (second edition) by Nathan Ida. It has since become my favourite book on the subject, along with Field and Wave Electromagnetics (second edition) by Cheng. I own six electromagnetics books, of which the two best known are the one by Cheng (aforementioned) and Electromagnetics with Applications by Kraus (sixth edition). I now compare these three books, referring to them as Ida, Cheng, and Kraus.

Firstly, all three books are good. All three are of similar level, suitable for EE undergraduates. (Ida and Cheng use matrices wherever appropriate, but Kraus never uses matrices, not even to simplify the discussion.) All three books display personal enthusiasm for the subject-matter. For example, Ida provides many interesting historical footnotes.

Secondly, Ida has 1235 pages whereas Cheng has 703 and Kraus has 617. It is tempting to attribute this to the fact that Ida tends to explain things with more words (something which I appreciate), but this is not the case because this would not account for more than 10 percent of the total book size. The true reason for the book's length is the in-depth discussion of theory, and the many many applications of the theory. In effect, it combines the best of Cheng (which is good for principles) and the best of Kraus (which is okay for applications). Ida actually far exceeds Kraus in many important applications, e.g. transformers, Smith chart, and numerical methods for boundary-value problems.

Thirdly, all three books are generous in providing answers to end-of-chapter problems. Ida goes one step further by giving answers to ALL problems except a handful of discussion-type questions. Moreover, the problems are categorized under headings so that you can zero in on an area of interest. For example, the chapter on antennas has 36 problems, categorized under the following boldface headings: Hertzian dipole (4 problems), magnetic dipole (2), linear antennas of arbitrary length (2), half-wave dipole antenna (2), various length dipole antennas (3), monopole antenna (5), two-element image antennas (6), n-element linear array (6), reciprocity and receiving antennas (4), and radar (2).

It is noteworthy that most the Amazon.com reviewers say that this is the best book ever on electromagnetics. I am inclined to agree with them.

Great!!!

This is a very, very good text for students new to electromagnetics. Mr. Ida uses lengthy, descriptive narratives to describe the important concepts in introductory field theory, and he goes the extra mile in making sure the student understands what these concepts mean. He accomplishes this through exemplary conceptual discussions and a collection of excellent example problems. His thoroughness justifies the 1200 page length of the text.

There is really nothing bad to say about this book, besides that the figures are obviously drawn by Mr. Ida or an assistant and are occasionally more difficult to read than figures drawn by a professional illustrator. In several examples, it also appears that the students solving the problems for Ida used a table of integrals instead of integrating the functions themselves; in several examples this resulted in more work than would have been required by straightforward integration methods.

Want to take your Mindstorms creations to new hieghts? Go beyond RIS? The ya have to get this book, a follow up to Dave Baum's Definitive Guide to Lego Mindstorms. You will not only see more NQC programming, but pbForth as well, and an excellent section on constructing your own sensors. If your the kid who doesn't grow up, an engineer at heart, and the owner of more than one RIS set because you are obssessed with Lego Mindstorms, then you cannot do without adding this book to your collection.

Good and not too extreme

I don't know if I like the "Extreme" in the title. In many ways this book just covers the basics. In some ways I like this book better than Baum's "Defintive Guide to LEGO Mindstorms", because it's not so NQC centric. In other ways I prefer the DGLM because it had more info on structural issues. There is a knack to making good LEGO structures, and a few tips really come in handy. I would have to say that I find the DGLM more extreme as far as the variety and originality of the projects.

Even better than it predecesor

This is a book that should be on EVERYONE'S bookshelf because sooner than later we will all need it. My husband and I put off thinking of wills, trusts, and most of all conversations with loved ones and Ms. Larsen's wonderful book got us doing it all. It's easy to read, informative, and filled with human interest stories. I recommend that you buy it, read it through, and remember that it's on your shelf. Buy it for your family and friends too, they will thank you.

Larsen's book throws open a window, allowing us a fresh look at the possibility of clarifying, before it's too late, the end of life issues of those we love. It's a thoughtful and calming read that utilizes significant facts, gentle suggestions, and even a bit of poetry to render this often postponed subject far easier to approach. I'm so glad I read it now......

As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I found Laura Larsen's Facing the Final Mystery of great value in working with clients who are dealing with illness and the issues surrounding the loss of a loved one. Ms. Larsen offers both very practical advice about how to handle the specifics of death, what to be prepared for about "facing this final mystery", along with a heartfelt section on how to handle grief. I recommend this book highly for both personal and professional use.

As a registered nurse, I wish that every one of my patients and their families would have read this excellent guide book. It would make my caring much easier. Ms. Larsen has a very practical approach to explaining a variety of issues surrounding end-of-life we all need to deal with whether we like it or not.

FACING THE FINAL MYSTERY is an eloquent and informative book on end-of-life issues. I have two elderly parents (ages 86 and 94), and this book has helped me through many pertinent and difficult situations. It addresses on many levels both practical and spiritual aspects of dealing with potentially painful and confusing problems. I have gained much insight and clarity and comfort from reading this book. I highly recommend it.
