Use These Magic Words To Succeed.Review Date: 2006-01-18
Some are necessary to parents of younger children, like nannies, teachers, pediatricians; for couples just starting out, she covers realtors, contractors, landlords. Even the adult children of elderly parents with information they should know, the needed advise on choosing nursing home and funeral directors -- which go together -- are a priority. She tells some of the things to ask and how to supervise (what to do, what not to do). "One of the most stressful aspects of placing a relative in a nursing home is the unwelcome glimpse it offers into your own possible future." She gives alternatives such as adult family homes (my sister did this for a while some years ago in Maryland), a private residence licensed to provide care for two to six individuals; it adds the personal touch as opposed to the "demoralization of institutional life." Even though "nursing homes are the second most heavily regulated industry in America (the nuclear power industry is first)," there are no guarantees. From personal experience, I'd advise it only as a last resort.
For those who own cars, she has pointers on dealing with auto mechanics and car salesmen. When dealing with local politicians, such as city council membres or even the mayor, there is a sample letter detailing how to get the best results, "with carbon copies sent to the Mayor, a local t.v. station news producer, and the editor of the local newspaper." City council members can accomplish many things, but they must work within certain limits; "prepare by clarifying what you want done."
If you need the services of a lawyer, "you will know that [by] asking why he got into law will make you one of his favorite clients." She gives pointers on hairdressers, so essential to a woman's appearance and self-confidence, and the tipping process, when it is alright not to tip.
People like doctors and therapists we all need at different stages in our lives so that they will do what they are trained to make our healthcare (physical and mental) tolerable. Some magic words to use: "Be 'concerned' instead of 'scared.' Be 'apprehensive' instead of a 'nervous wreck.' In everyday life, we tend to exaggerate to get results, but with doctors have to go to the opposite extreme. Even if you are 'in agony,' try not to use those words. Instead say, "I have a lot of discomfort."
If something about you gives these professionals the impression that you will make them fail, they will be less than likely to help you. "If they sense that they will succeed with you, they will go out of their way to return your calls, honor their agreements." This book will show you how to give them the impresssion that they will succeed. Lynette Padwa has also written EVERYTHING YOU PRETEND TO KNOW AND ARE AFRAID SOMEONE WILL ASK.
Like reading the other person's playbook!Review Date: 2006-01-10
Eighteen chapters cover topics from doctors to funeral directors; car salesmen to auto mechanics; realtors to general contractors. Each chapter stands on its own as a "playbook" with practical advice for dealing with common situations. Pawda teaches win-win by showing the reader how to see the world through the other person's eyes.
Read it once for the practical advice. Read it again for insight into human behavior. Read it one more time to transform how you see others.

I made the decision to provide the book free to help support the SS7 training that I do; I can now point candidates at the book online and ask them to skim read it before any training is provided. This has worked extremely well.

Best Book on the Market Covering SS7 ProtocolReview Date: 2005-10-28
To follow on after reading this book I would recommend Lee's training course, Lee not only covers the topic's in his book, he applies his expertise and real world knowledge for you to learn from. A great book to have if you are in the telecommunications industry.

An excellent tutorial and reference tool for SS7Review Date: 2006-05-20
Some minor mistakes mostly typos that are counted to the fingers of both hands may be forgiven for a book of almost 700 pages covering such a complicated technical subject as the SS7 Signaling System, which gives such a detailed, elaborated and beautifully structured knowledge useful and digestible even for the most unfamiliar reader.
Also, unlike someone's assumptions that since the book is published by Cisco Press it would give Cisco point of view and solutions description for SS7, it is not the case.It is cleverly written as a no-vendor technical tutorial in SS7, based exclusively in the standard bodies specifications (ITU-T, ETSI, ANSI etc) as well as in various no-vendor reference sources (more than 150 in number). To this the authors vast experience in SS7 apparently contributes greatly.
Consequently, a future work on SS7 that we would greatly welcome is a book of how to program in SS7, install SS7 hardware and configure an SS7 network.

Most In Depth, Useful Screenwriting BookReview Date: 2004-10-31
One of the BestReview Date: 2006-01-01
Too many "how-to" books on writing perpetrate the image of a writer as a conduit for mysterious creative forces. While I'm not entirely discounting that image, there needs to be a balance between writing as an art and writing as a craft. This book falls firmly in the craft column. It demands you cast aside any artistic pretensions and get down to the plumbing of creating a story. And it doesn't stop with the obligatory pep talk--Lucey shows you how it's done. And he shows it better than any other writing how-to out there.
If I could give this ten stars I would. Highly recommended.

I actually was able to log into my jobs intranet website as administrator using some of the techniques I learned from this book. Then I went to my boss and showed him how and then showed how we can prevent it. Short story short they were impressed.
More than just words!Review Date: 2008-02-22
This book is excellent for both the beginner and the advanced! Plenty of real examples! Walks the beginner through the concepts of foot printing. It explains the technologies and then for the advanced it talks about creating custom code for each vulnerability.
This is a must have for any security professional's library! it was worth every penny!
Everything You Need to KnowReview Date: 2008-01-16
The first few chapters provide context and background information. Chapter 3 on Web Application Technologies provides particularly useful background info. The next 666 pages of the book are all about attacking the applications.
There next five chapters cover mapping application functionality, client side controls, authentication, sessions, and access controls. The coverage is comprehensive. I'm not new to these topics, but I learned so much in every chapter. The depth of coverage is amazing.
The next six chapters are the heart of this book. They cover injection, path traversal, application logic, XSS and related attacks, automating attacks, and information disclosure. You'll find full treatment of attacks we're all familiar with like SQL injection and cross site scripting as well as many that most of us haven't heard of before. The danger is real and these chapters need to be read.
The final next four chapters cover attacks against compiled applications, application architecture, web servers, and source code. The final two chapters are more useful as a quick reference. They provide an overview of the tools covered throughout the book and describe attack methodology discussed throughout the book for exploiting each technology.
This book scores five easily based on the relevance and value of the information.
An excellent thorough resource for web application securityReview Date: 2008-01-20
This book is extremely up to date with its coverage of new AJAX and XSS-type attacks while still covering the relatively old vulnerabilities like buffer overflows and sql injections.
The authors are both professional penetration testers which gives them credibility over the information they provide in this book, and one of them is the author of the excellent free web application hacking tool called Burp Suite.
I would recommend this book to anyone that has a basic knowledge of how the Web works (http, javascript, cookies, html, and basics of a programming language like php or java) although you could learn these technologies as you are reading the book which would take some more time.
A Truely Excellent Resource for any Professional Web Hacker!Review Date: 2008-01-25

From a review published in Law and Order MagazineReview Date: 2008-10-24
You can make that relationship better (or at least less nerve-wracking for you) through preparation and knowledge. Jones offers knowledge of media relations from the insider's point of view - as a former newspaper and broadcast journalist, Jones offers insight on not only how things work, by why the media do the things they do. And then to tie it up with a pretty bow, he tells you how and why you should do an interview, a press release, a press conference, deal with a crisis, pick a PIO, do damage control, and make heads or tails of media law.
While the book covers many, many topics, Jones does a good job breaking it down simplistically and with bold-faced subheads generously placed throughout the book so it can truly be used as a manual on the fly. He divides Winning with the News Media into three sections: Strategy, Skills and Inside the Media. The Skills Section will be most valuable to chiefs, sheriffs and PIOs as it offers instruction on how to give good un-misquotable quotes in interviews as well as how to look and sounds one's best during an interview. He offers guidelines in the form of Ten Commandments and also addresses such hot topics as "off the record."
This book is used as a textbook in many media relations classes, ranging from government agencies to corporations. Therefore, it is broad-based. This is not a manual exclusive to law enforcement, although Jones does throw in some references and offers some examples using law enforcement agents. There are certain sections that you'll need to tweak-as-you-read, for example, crisis management. While the book suggests how a corporation would react and respond to certain crises, it's not too far off from how a chief or sheriff should handle such a situation. But because topics like evidence preservation and investigative integrity are not included in the sample plan, one should just mentally add those and like components in.
Jones also offers a section on privacy laws, briefly summarizing some cases that established the rights of journalists and their cameras. The topic is important, as undoubtedly at some point in your career a reporter will tell you that he or she is entitled to gain entry or to access some information based on such-and-such a case ruling. Be prepared and know what they have access to and what they don't have access to - again, you can use this book as a reference guide for quick look-up.
Winning with the News Media would be most beneficial to command staff level officers as well as those who deal frequently with the media, like persons crimes detectives. The ones to get the most use from this book would be PIOs and agency heads. One should definitely read this book prior to assuming a PIO position not only for the practical tips on dealing with the media but also for the insider's view on how the media work. Jones provides a sort of organizational chart of newsrooms which will make it so much easier to figure out not only who to talk to about what type of story, but also to figure out who has got the authority to deal with your complaints. Agency heads might also want to pick this book up so that when the time comes to deal with that inevitable crisis, you'll have the knowledge to know what you'll be up against. And then when you're facing the crisis (and the cameras), using the book as a reference manual will be that much easier.
One "keep an open mind warning": the writing structure is very basic and very simple which some seasoned PIOs and media-savvy chiefs might find a little condescending. However, if you look at it as a how-to manual then you will see why that simplicity is so important - the wording is clear and concise and the directions are easy to follow. Think of any complex piece of furniture or children's toy you've ever tried to put together - how many times have you wished for simple directions? This manual will help you get the job done and you won't have any of those "extra" pieces lying around.

The Publicity Hound says "2 thumbs up!"Review Date: 2004-11-24
Clarence Jones, a former award-winning investigative reporter in both newspapers and TV, knows his stuff, including all the tricks reporters use to loosen your lips. The book is pithy, with easy-to-read chapters broken down into numerous sub-heads--making it easy to find exactly what you're looking for in a hurry.
Jones takes you inside the heads and brains of working journalists. He explains how they think, how they react, and what they have the power to do to you if you don't play by their rules.
I read an earlier edition from cover to cover and referred to it so often in my consulting practice that the book literally fell apart from use. When I scanned this 8th edition, I got lost in it AGAIN, long past my bedtime. Reading it will make you much smarter, much savvier and much better prepared to meet the media when bad news strikes. Even if all the stories about you are good (yeah, right), please don't do another interivew unless you read this book first.

Live transmissions are notably courageous in their way struggling so hard to persuade local (and influential) governments to let them work into the `heart' of the stories being anchored, against the background of petty local political bickering and futility.

Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche tells stories of these events that go back a considerable ways before he was born, into the 19th century, when Tibet was a world unto itself. He ends the book with a relatively brief description of the work he undertook at the direction of the 16th Karmapa to build a monastery near the great stupa of Boudanath, near Kathmandu, many years after his departure from Tibet in 1955. One sees glimpses throughout the narrative of the coming debacle; remarkable prophecies, side by side with engaging tales of his encounters with masters of the Dharma. It is a unique account, not to be missed, especially by those who seek a deeper understanding of how the great lamas of Tibet in that time lived their lives, related to each other, maintained their lineages and looked forward to preservation of the Dharma in a changed world. Altogether enchanting!

Lengthy hagiography/biography with some fine teachingsReview Date: 2007-09-03
There are also pithy observations--p. 114: "Chö is to benefit others by cutting through ego-clinging," p. 11: "When training in Mahamudra, do not busy yourself with virtuous deeds of body & speech," Milarepa explained, "because you risk losing thought-free wakefulness," p. 307: a master who acted childlike, ignoring social conventions upon reaching "collapse of delusion," p. 312: a master noting that "The Way of the Bodhisattva" is a rudimentary text, & Samten Gyatso's p. 101: "emptiness isn't anything you can possibly cultivate."
There are also some interesting takes on preconceptions: p. 327: "Today's meat & cream is tomorrow's shit, p. 342: By abandoning activities you approach the nature of nonaction. That's the entire reason for staying in mountain retreats, & p. 387 note 172: Erik Schmidt--The hell realms are not real, physical locations but resemble horror movies played out in the minds of the beings there.
It's a long book (especially if you aren't into hagiography & hyperbole), but if you persevere, there are gems herein. You have to dig to find the gold or wish-fulfilling gem. If you want some of his actual teachings, try his very fine Rainbow Painting: A Collection of Miscellaneous Aspects of Development and Completion or the collection of his pith instructions, Vajra Speech: A Commentary on The Quintessence of Spiritual Practice, The Direct Instructions of the Great Compassionate One or his lengthier As It Is Vol. 1 (As It Is) & As It Is, Vol. 2.
