Poetry and love in the age of the Internet.

Review Date: 2000-02-04
Bytes Of Poetry: A Lovestories.com Anthology features 155 poems by 80 poets, sampled from over 56,000 postings by people worldwide. The diversity of the poets showcased is reflected in short bios. For some their's was a remarkable first effort, for others the result of a lifetime of writing. These are poems to be read aloud, shared with family and friends, and even inspire their readers to take up the craft of lyric verse themselves. Unspoken Words: I should have told you darling.../That I love you/Should have made it very clear/My unspoken was so true/No I'm wishing you were here/If I could do it all over/And turn back the hands of time/I would tell you that I love you/And I'm grateful that you're mine/I always thought it was something that I said/But it was unspoken.../unspoken words instead. (Maurice Sherry)

I must confess I am one of the poets, but that aside, I love this book. It is such an honor to be among these poets in such a fine collection. The lack of commercialism is one of the finest attributes of this book. It warms the heart with its honesty, even though sometimes brutal. My favorites would have to be Love Unrequited, 10 Rules of Love, and of course my own Peanutbutter Kisses, He let me Hold His Hand, & A Butterfly. As I read and reread this book my list of favorites keep growing. I've watched Bytes of Poetry keep a 14 yr old, a 62 year old, and a 31 year old riveted. I recommend it to everyone.

I am not one to read poetry and I admit that I primarily bought this book simply because I am one of the authors. However, I found I loved reading every poem that was included. I have read some more than twice. This is truly an inspiration and Alanna did a tremendous job. I applaud her and also thank her for including my poem. I have bought several as gifts and since I am in danger of wearing one of my copies out I am thankful I have more than one! I feel that there is something in this book that can touch everyone. I recommend this to anyone who loves to just curl up and read words that will move you to so many emotions ranging from unrequited love to an everlasting love, from sorrow to pure happiness, from sad memories to memories of laughter. Now, not only do I love writing poetry, I also enjoy reading it.

I found the selection of poems in Bytes of Poetry to be as delectable and intriguing as the contents of a good candy sampler. The poems address experiences we have all had in the course of living, experiences of an emotional nature, particularly those involved in relating to loved ones. Topics such as loving, longing, mating, finding meaning together, and parting are tastefully explored. The poems manage, again and again, to strike home with insight and directness. They touch the heart as they should because they are sincere and heartfelt. Everything is within the range of empathy and rings true. I am pleased to see poetry "come home" again. The book is worth reading several times.

This is the first of the O'Reilly books I have been disappointed in. I bought the book for one reason-- to find out how to restore a / and /usr file system off a remote tape drive. Unfortunately the book does not answer this question, all of its examples assume the server has a local tape drive attached. The authors spend their time touting freebie utilities at the expense of a thourough discussion of the backup and restore capabilities that come with the operating system.

This book is important for System Administrators and DBAs. The book is well-written and have discussed all the major UNIX flavors back and recovery. The author went further by discussing the Backup and Recovery of major databases on these UNIX operating systems.
I give 5 stars.

Definitive guide to Backups

As a former Unix system administrator, this book proved invaluable to me. Backups are a dreaded responsibility for most as they are not glamorous, but when a backup is needed, the administrator can become a hero or out of a job very quickly depending on thier backups. The author provides some deep insight into the art of backups, drawing upon real world examples that provide insight into the recommendations. The authors quips on real world backup stories is worth the price alone as there is great knowledge to be gained from someone else's mistakes and failures. Truly a gem that should be on EVERY system administrators bookshelf.

This is *THE* Computer System backup book. It contains all the basics of why you want to backup computer systems, plus many of the real world experience details. It is written from a Unix perspective, but is still applicable to Windows and other non-Unix environments.

I've been using this book as a general guide for several years now. It was a book I watched work it's way through the O'Reilly system from first announcement to general release. I bought it when it first came out. I have not been disappointed in it.

Many people think of computer system backups as a dry old musty topic of interest to nobody in particular. But 9/11 showed how important good disaster recovery planning and procedures could be to a business.

Some of the specifics are now a little out of date, but not by leaps and bounds. It is still very good for its core reason for being - Backups. It is very much less out of date than other computer books on the market today.

I have been dealing with large-scale computer system backups and disaster recovery for large employers for years... and I still consult this book regularly to make sure have not missed anything important. It covers all the topics you need.

The Oracle 10G Admin 2 book was more concise on database recovery and gave a much clearer description on what is involved in recovery than the Oracle 10G Admin 1 book. I found the book much easier to read and understand. The subject matter is really presented well and a student can appreciate the time saved by a clear and well thought out description of Globalization and resource management chapters.

The exercises in the book were very helpful in mastering the concepts on configuration and Automatic database management. I especially liked the chapter on Recovery Manager and the exercises were excellent. This book has helped me learn Oracle 10G and I would recommend it to other students trying to learn Oracle 10G.

Backup and Recovery is one of the most critical tasks that a DBA has to perform. Sadly, it is also one of the most misunderstood. RMAN should be the tool of choice for backup and recovery for Oracle databases. There is so much that can be done with RMAN.

What Robert and Matthew do is break it down piece by piece. There is a great intro and they build on that in subsequent chapters. If you want to link RMAN directly with your backup software (i.e. Veritas, EMC, Legato, etc..) then the authors show you how. I used the Veritas piece to link RMAN in and it worked flawlessly. They go over the latest features including block changing files (for faster incremental backups), merging level 1 and level 0 backups (for faster recoveries without the overhead of backing up the whole database), and even cover what the flash recovery area is and how to use it. There is so much great material packed in this book. Yeah, you can try and read Oracle's docs, but rather than just show you how to do it, the authors also teach you why to do it.

You can read this book chronologically or use it as a reference. The authors writing style make this book a great joy to read. They also include a lot of great examples in case you like to learn by seeing.

I would highly recommend this book if you are an Oracle DBA, whether you use RMAN or not. Afterall, RMAN is what you should be using :).

Whether you are in charge of 100 or 1 systems, you need to consider backup and data protection solutions. Clearly the most sensible approach is leveraging inexpensive and highly available disk based solutions as backup targets. This book not only describes the benefits of this approach but also guides you on how to leverage one of the simplest yet most powerful Windows backup software available.

By simplifying our backup strategy from traditional tape to disk, we were able to save $12K a year (in tape costs) and took our backup window from 2 1/2 days to 6 hours, while increasing our time to recovery to 5min. from 5 hours.

Excellent!

We've implement the author's Backup 2 Disk design, and we couldn't be happier with it's results. After years of frustrating tape drive failures, expensive tape and equipment replacements, and agonizingly slow backup and restore routines, Mr. Lolli's backup architecture is a welcome solution. It's allowed us to recover from a frightening, and potentially catastrophic, system failure and it's day-to-day operations are fast and easy. Restoring accidentally deleted files, for instance, is now an exceptionally quick, simple, straight-forward process. Our backup system is, finally and thankfully, practical, solid, reliable, cost-effective and easily manageable. Accolades to Mr. Lolli!

A must read book for anyone who has endured a restore from tape backup!!

Review Date: 2005-11-09
This book and the methodology Mr. Lolli explains has saved our company a lot of time and effort! And his book is very easy to follow and understand.

We were using tape backup and on several occasions we chose to re-input lost data manually rather than go through the hassle and time of a restore from tape. We were also running into a time constraint problem of actually completing daily backups.

Now, because of this book we backup entirely to disk, and it's one of the best decisions we ever made! Backups are now done in less than 1/10 of the time tape took, and a typical file restore takes less than 2 mintues!

The methods clearly explained in this book are amazing time savers, and easy to follow and implement. I highly recommend this book for businesses of any size.

Great computer book helps the average user get after threats to their computer!

Review Date: 2006-08-03
Bug-Free Computing, by Ken Dwight, who calls himself "The Virus Doctor," is a book that could be very important to business people who depend on their computers to make a living and worry about a virus or other malevolent software designed to attack a computer and bring it down.

If this concerns you, but you have no real idea how to deal with it, Dwight's book is a solid primer designed for the average computer user. You don't have to be a geek to understand it, it's written in plain English, with a minimum of technical jargon. For example, in a chapter devoted to data backups, readers will be delighted to find information specifically tailored to the average user - what to back up, when, how, what media to use, what programs to use, etc.

Viruses are a primary focus of the book; most computer users are aware of viruses and their potential to do harm, but what many users don't understand, even technicians, is that viruses have changed greatly in the past few years in terms of virus behavior and distribution, so it's extremely important to keep up with and be aware of these differences.

Bug-Free Computing also discusses spyware, browser hijackers, keyloggers, spam, hoaxes, urban legends and other possible computer problems. You don't have to read the book cover-to-cover to get the help you need. The reader can take a look at the table of contents to discern the chapter that covers their most pressing concerns, and quickly flip to that chapter.

In addition, the text includes hyperlinks to various web sites and articles referenced in the book. If the reader desires more information than what is presented in Dwight's book, the links will provide more detail and even direct the reader to vendors of products mentioned in the book. Also, the information contained in the appendices is extremely helpful; the most useful is the ability to keep the information up-to-date from the Book Registration web site.

While the subject of programs that can damage your computer is a serious one, Dwight offers a light-hearted detour in the form of a section on hoaxes and urban legends. This section is good for a few chuckles before returning to the grim realities of dealing with computer problems.

Dwight's style is easy and disarming, making for a pleasant read, even for technophobes. For example, in the chapter on spam, he shows users how to read message headers and footers to find clues to the real identity of the sender and how to use filters to cut down on your spam email. He also explains that it's not a good idea to click on the "Remove Me" link that is included in some spam emails; that action could possibly increase your email rather than decrease it.

Ken Dwight's book is chock-full of common-sense pointers, making it an excellent choice for those who want to protect their computers without hiring expensive consultants.

Lucid explanation of PC bugs and solutions

Mr. Dwight draws on his 40 years of computer experience to present a lucid explanation of the inner workings of PC programs and how they are affected by viruses and other malicious programming. His technical explanations are easy to follow and understand, even for the novice PC user. His book has clear screen-shots of typical Windows options, and he carefully explains why and how to optimize Windows for maximum operating efficiency and security. His book is essential reading for anyone who has a PC connected to the Internet. I am an accomplished user, but I am not an expert, and I found his many hints and suggested settings to be excellent methods of improving my PC's protection. I purchased several copies to give to family and friends because I found his advice invaluable.

This is a great book for anyone who has a computer. The book is arranged well, starting with an overview of computer viruses and how they originate, pass from machine to machine and work. It gives a brief insight as to the type of person who creates this havoc.

Most importantly, it gives us the information that we need to minimize our exposure to computer viruses and what to do if/when we get infected. I will definitely keep my virus and firewall protection up to date.

Not very technical, great for the person who wants to understand the problem and what to do

If your computer is on and you are connected to the Internet then sooner or later it will become infected. These days you don't have to open attachments, download a file, or even surf the web to become infected; just being connected can make you a target. In his book Bug-Free Computing, Ken Dwight educates the reader about the history of the many threats to safe computing and what you can do to make your computer experience as safe as possible. Some of the information will be surprising to most people including the fact that most infections occur on a system that has anti-virus software installed. To keep bug-free he discusses anti-virus software, using a firewall, spam filtering, and a host of other techniques to increase your safety. And, of course he includes a section on what to do if you are already infected. Written in a very easy to understand style, Bug-Free Computing is highly recommended to the everyday user who wants to understand the computing environment and how to work on their computer without stressing about infections.

Maxine Gadd is one of the best poets in Canada, and yet strangely enough one of the severely underpublished. BACKUP TO BABYLON collects three books by her from the period of 1972 through 1987; I hope there's a followup to give us her more recent poetry, but anyhow this is cause for celebration because this is her first book in 24 years!

Born in England during World War II, Maxine Gadd was the child of Canadian parents both fighting in the Second World War. They brought her back to their country when she was a girl of 6, and she grew up at Vancouver's Dunsmuir Hotel. By the age of 15 or 16 she had discovered poetry, and the Beats, and she made herself at home at Vancouver's very first beat cafe, the Black Spot. Girls wore black stockings, boys wore beards, it was very bohemian. She hitchhiked to North Beach, the beat capital of San Francisco, and lived in Monterey, meanwhile beginning to write some of the most beautiful, energetic, politically savvy, and formally linguistic poetry of the 20th century. I was about to say she is like a Canadian version of Kenneth Rexroth, Joanne Kyger, or Philip Whalen, but the truth is that we don't have aa Maxine Gadd equivalent in the United States. If only we had! We might be a more progressive nation, and our children might be writing much better poetry.

As you can see, her writing makes me a little weak in the knees. "Greenstone," the first book, evokes a stage in late capitalism in which all structures begin to collapse, like the cry of "timber" of all the skyscrapers in the world. From the crevices, a new wilderness begins to creep like kudzu, or the space creatures in Neil Young's AFTER THE GOLD RUSH. The book ends with a theophany, "Maxine Meets Proteus in Gastown," that is one of the essential poems of our day. Gastown = a waterfront district in Vancouver, once dangerous, now a tourist trap. Proteus = the god of change, shapeshifting, the trickster.

"Cabin on the Shore," book 2, is more idyllic, breezy, and yet it's a book of hesitations, stops and starts, retreats and go forwards. There's a poem "In Praise of Bad Things' that entreats, "praise the hawk that steals the heron's fish; praise the heron raising her true harsh cry of protest" etc. "April for Z" cuts a Z across the page like that Mauricio Castellan version of Zorro, and "For the times there are no ones," a long poem that sees the birds picking at Prometheus' liver as an augur of human suffering and solidarity in Nicaragua. So it's pastoral, but with a provocative twist.

Finally the eponymous "Backup to Babylon" returns to the city for good and all, a city like Dhalgren filled with spontaneous kills and celebrations, a city under eiege, a squatters' Vancouver. In this last part Gadd seems so at home in the rhetoric of her line you drink in every word like oxygen, something necessary, nearly without thought. Maybe it's a little transparent? I don't know. Poems like "What" or "Round" seem eerily to have always existed, like the stones rearing up at Stonehenge, and yet they were made by a poet, and her life is what she is dealing from, that and a titanic perspective born of pain and sympathy in equal parts.

God bless New Star Books for bringing out this collection and for doing it so handsomely and with such grace. And hooray for Maxine Gadd! The frontispiece is a photo of the author taken in 1984 I think. I, a man in middle life, would have given five years of my life to have looked that super cool for five minutes!
