Short and sweet. Great book for not only kids but even some adults. This is exactly the kind of book our young kids need to help them out in the real world. This should be required course material for all high school kids. If young kids would save a little bit more money at a younger age they would have it a lot easeier later in life. Time is their biggest ally.

Much needed information!

What I wouldn't have given for this book when I was a teenager! Easy to understand, doesn't overpower with terminology that I don't even begin to comprehend. Great book, whose time has definitely come! Finances don't have to be hard to understand or resemble black holes! Good going, fellas! Keep up the good work! The world will thank you one day!

Must read for any teen, and their parents!

Everyone knows its best to save your money and invest wisely, but here's the straight scoop on how the really rich got that way. This book was part no-nonsense career coach, part cheerleader, part cautionary tale. There's something for everyone here. And yes, it was a fast, inspiring, funny read.

Great fun. Good read.

A fun, fast (read it in one day) and eye-opening read on the real roads to real wealth. This was very different from Fisher's last book, the Only Three Questions that Count, which I also liked, but did not disappoint. This book is not about stocks per se (although Fisher does cover stock investing in one of the chapters as a path to wealth) but rather is a sort of frank public service announcement about the most realistic paths to wealth. And, it helps you figure out how to improve your odds of getting down the path you choose more successfully.

The book uses real life, and often very funny examples to show what to do and what to avoid doing if you want to build real wealth. Highly recommended.

An insightful and humorous read about building wealth

This is a fun, breezy read, as investment advisor and long-time Forbes columnist Ken Fisher has written a serious, but humorous book about how to build wealth. And at 216 pages a quick read.

Fisher's last book, "The Only Three Questions that Count", was superb. This latest book is very different from "The Only Three Questions...", which is all about personal investing but which also has application to other areas of a person's life.

"The Ten Roads to Riches" is about the varied ways a person can build personal wealth. Fisher draws from his own experience of meeting many successful people, as he charts the paths. The chapters are insightful and written in a tongue-in-cheek style with ideas that can be easily visualized.

Some examples: The first chapter "The Richest Road", which is founding your own business and building it into the next Microsoft, Nike, or Charles Schwab. The third chapter, about the "Ride-alongs", people who hitch theirselves to the Bill Gates's or Warren Buffett's of the world and rise as they and their firm rise. If you are Warren Buffett's longtime sidekick, there's got to be wealth in that, right? (Yup. Charlie Munger is his name and his net worth is $2 billion.)

Chapter four is "Rich ... and Famous". Some tips: compose songs, don't sing them, and star high school baseball players have slightly better odds of making the big leagues then star football players.

Chapter five is "Marry Well, Really Well", which is very amusing, but also serious. Hey, if you want to get married, hang around with rich people and fall in love with one of them! Plenty of examples including John Kerry (twice) and John McCain.

Chapter six is "Steal It - Like a Pirate, But Legally", making a career as a plaintiff's lawyer and suing companies. Enough said.... And chapter nine is "Trumping the Land Barons" - all about real estate.

The last chapter is "The Road Most Travelled", about doing it the old-fashioned way - get a good job, work hard, save and invest wisely.

Each chapter is a survey, giving multiple examples of people who took the particular road, and offering ideas, but no detailed plan. At the end of each are brief reviews of suggested additional readings for anyone who might be inclined to follow that particular path. I was surprised that there are actually serious books about how to "Marry Well", but maybe I shouldn't have been?

An enjoyable, quick read about one aspect of the business of life.

This was a fun little book to read!

Review Date: 2008-07-30
This book follows the thought processes of a group of scientists in New Mexico trying to make economics more scientific. Specifically, they are attempting to use principles from the field of quantum physics and complexity science to show how societies might evolve from simple beginnings to develop more complex economic structures like banks and stock markets. Along the way they are assisted by a fictional family of "Thogs" who have been around for some 50,000 years. These Thogs instruct the scientists on how these various institutions were initially developed. While the concepts presented here are fairly complicated, the book presents them in such a way that makes both the accounting and physics easy to understand.

An Amazing Accounting Book
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-20
This book is a "great read." It tells in a creative and charming manner the story of how accounting came to be over the course of tens of thousands of years. Accounting students will enjoy it because of it's fresh approach.

But that's only half the story. At another level, there are some fairly important ideas that lie behind this book, which will be evident to all who peak into Dr. Z's backpack and read some of these pieces.

By using simple examples that resemble parables, this book describes how humans devised an economic institution with powerful and far-reaching consequences. The juxtaposition of historical narrative with the ongoing experimentation in complexity science is extraordinarily creative. And, the book offers a different perspective on modern accounting standard setting in the process. In sum, I've been reading "accounting books" for 30 years, and this is an exceptionally interesting one. This is definitely worth a look and very likely a careful second reading as well.

This book is very insightful on both, aspects of tourism and travel, as well as the financial affects that tourism can play on a country's economy. The authors seem to know what they're talking about and they're very good at relaying their knowledge to their readers in a concise way.

This book offers a fusion of theory and practical advice that is directly relevant to managers - an area where many current tourism texts fall short. It is both strategic and tactical, providing readers with a broad overview of the tourism environment as well as implementable ideas for improving business performance. I have read and enjoyed the original version by McIntosh, and the new insights from Ritchie and Goeldner add new depth to an already exceptional read.

Look around. You'll find no book in the field as thorough and well written as this.

This book kept me up all night, I couldn't put it down.

I was so tempted many times while reading to drop the book, run the the computer and start right then in the middle of the night.

Book is very easy to understand, not a lot of those fancy words you hear on CNBC or read in the Wall Street Journal. They take that stuff and bring it down to the level that an individual investor can understand.

Authors very motivating and relate their experiences in the market very well.

The authors of this book helped me get started in online IPO trading. I followed their steps and am finding huge success with IPOs! On my first trade, I bought 100 shares at $12 and sold at $20. I was pleased with this profit, because it was considerably more than I get from other "short term" investments. I waited for the right IPO to "freakin' hit!" as the authors say, and hit one that made me over $11,000 profit in about two hours on the first day of trade. I STILL can't believe it! The book clearly details everything you need to know and do to get into trading IPOs online. If you have more questions, the authors even have their own website where you can contact them and get your questions answered. They know their stuff! What a great book!

The book not only documents the terrible events of that tragic day but provides a balanced historical prospective of the firm's philosophy and a description of the business itself that helps to understand how the firm has been able to triumpth over the tragedy. It is a particularly timely book in these times of great public mistrust of corporate culture.

The title explains it best. Reading this book will give anyone the drive and inspiration to move forward through even the worst of circumstances. Although the loss of nearly 70 employees and the death of fathers and sons may have brought this boutique firm to its knees, the entire office fought back to secure even a stronger position in the investment banking world. There have been thousands of stories that have come from the disaster of September 11, none have been told as well as this one.

The Ultimate MBA: Meaningful Biblical Analogies For Business is a Christian guidebook to bringing integrity worthy of faithful believers and harmonizing it with the business need to turn a profit. The Ultimate MBA draws upon the wisdom of the Bible to illustrate the power of positive, compassionate, and upstanding policies, and describes in plain terms the importance of building lasting institutions upon values. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to balance seemingly opposing business and conscience goals.

The Ultimate MBA is clearly a timely book for the times. With corporate scandal and wide-spread greed abounding, this book brings some very sage advice laced with ethical/moral guidance. It is thought provoking and runs the gambit from the author's youthful experiences as a field laborer to top corporate executive as his remarkable career progressed. There is plenty to learn from the book: it should be required reading for all business degree candidates. As the author states, "[t]here need to be major reforms in how we run America's corporations and in the purposed they serve." The country needs to get on with it. And, this book is a very good start in leading the way to changes in the business minset.

Having worked in the business world for over 30 years and read a corresponding number of business books, I can honestly say that "The Ultimate MBA" was the first to get me to think this deeply. In the end, all of us are simply human beings and the number of times which we pause to reflect upon our moral obligations are limited in our fast-paced business world. Moreau finds a happy balance in conveying his practical experience and high degree of morality. I think this book should be read by all business people who want to leave behind more than just debits and credits.

Credit Derivative -- Primer
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-10
A very good introduction to credit derivatives at the level of
"J.C.Hull - Options, Futures...", as remarked by a reviewer.

This book is also at the level of, but better than the recent text
"Credit Derivatives - A primer on credit risk..." by Chacko et al.

The chapters are short (less than 10 pages mostly),
well organized, clear, gives a good overview, just enough mathematics
and simple numerical examples to fix ideas.

1. Part 1 is chapter 1 to 3, introducing credit derivative (CD) market
and uses of CD.

2. Part 2 is chapter 4 to 14, each describing a type of CD.
Each chapter describing that CD is organized as

a. How does it work ?
b. Common uses.
c. Valuation
d. Variations of the basic structure

3. Part 3 is chapter 15 to 18, describing basic elements of credit risk
modeling like valuing defaultable bonds, CDS premium to hazard rates,
structural/reduced form modeling etc.

4. Part 4 is chapter 19 to 23, addressing valuations of portfolio credit
risk (baskets default swaps, portfolio swaps, CDO's ..)

5. Part 5 is chapter 24 & 25 giving CD documentation/regulatory issues.
