The eighth edition of The Manager's Bookshelf provides an overview of the most important management and leadership models in use today. The book consists of excerpts and articles that summarize the best and original thinking on the subject. For example, Maslow's hierarchy is classic; the excerpt from the original work faithfully presents the model and many of its facets. Peter Senge seems to have written the section about the Fifth Discipline, which is an effective summary of system thinking leading to The Dance of Change (one of Senge's later works).

The book is not a quick-self-help book. The management and leadership models are meant for meditation. The editors provided a great resource to ponder the meanings, while avoiding making the book ponderous.

If you have the resources, buy the original works and read them. If you need a quick reference that gives the best picture of the original material and the ability to compare some complementary ideas side by side, this is am excellent book to work with.

I've been a fan of John Ventura and Mary Reed's books for some time, mainly because they are accurate, straightforward and actionable. Managing Debt for Dummies is no exception. It covers everything from basic budgeting to how to avoid eviction. I've been in the consumer education field for a long time now and I can attest that the strategies and resources listed are reliable and useful.

The chapter on Managing Your Past-Due Mortgage is going to be especially relevant as billions of dollars in adjustable rate mortgages begin to reset. Likewise, I know a lot of people are having trouble paying back student loans, and the information there is also clear and straightforward.

Overall, this book is coming out at the right time, and I have no doubt many, many people are going to find it indispensible.

Not knowing where to start untangling the mess I'd made for myself and way too embarrassed, even ashamed, to ask for help kept me living in vagueness, not ever adding up the numbers. Managing Debt for Dummies made it safe to come out from under the covers and look at my financial situation. Ventura and Reed not only have a friendly, non-judgmental tone to their advice, they break the road to solvency down into manageable pieces and guide us forward step by step. It most reminds me of the feeling I had as my dad ran alongside my bike the first rides after removing the training wheels. The fear is still there, but knowing he's there to guide me, I'm able to take the risk, all the time feeling an eminent sense of independence.

Must read for InfoSec Technologists & Banking Professionals

This book provides an excellent review of the state of the art in the Information Security space, particularly in reference to financial institutions. The approach of the book is to split this space into three sections- risk management & strategy, technologies/countermeasures, and current trends and issues faced by financial institutions. You may have come across these individual papers as part of regular work / study / research, however having them compiled within a single tome with a clear arc helps put them into perspective, enhancing the value of each individual paper. A must read for information security technologists and banking / financial services technology professionals / enterpreneurs.

This book is an excellent introduction to the important topics within Information Security in the financial services sector. Overall, the organization, selection of topics, and level of coverage are well suited for anyone working or interested in Information Security. Each chapter provides great insights into each topic and has enough introduction to the subject that no prior experience or knowledge is required. Specifically, I liked the chapters regarding "Return on Security Investments", "Phishing" and "Information Assurance Strategies".

I recently started a project in information security for one of the top financial services company as Technical Manager. Since this is my first assignment in financial industry I decided to go through few books that can help me to understand information security in financial industry. Luckily I got this book which contains high-quality research, industry and practice articles in the area of information assurance in the financial services industry. This is not light reading....but it is worth every minute of effort. Now I don't feel like I am new to financial industry as the book helped me to give good understanding of all the key aspects of information security practices in financial services.

Marketing Research from a Project Based Perspective
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-29
This is the new edition of the book we used in the marketing research course at the Michigan Business School. It was great then and is even better now that they have tightened it up and slimmed it down a bit. It reads clearly, is focused, and doesn't pull any punches about the benefits, tradeoffs, and limitations of the various problems and methods involved in this subject.

Rather than focusing on decision support systems or marketing information systems, this book is focused on a project based approach. The authors help you recognize a problem, how to formulate it clearly, present it to decision makers for approval, designing the research to be done, data design and collection methods, they offer sample designs which is very helpful. They then do a fabulous job on data analysis and conclude by showing you how to present a proper research report.

There are several helpful appendices providing statistical values for those calculator based problems, but, really, who doesn't use a spreadsheet or SPSS or some similar package anymore?

There is also a glossary, a subject index, and an author index.

This is a standard text on the subject, and it is terrific.

An excellent work both theory and analysis. Provides an insight about the math requirments for the Marketing Researcher. In certain areas it gives the basic ideas - pp 752,753 - Fig.13.1 Histogram and Frequency Polygon of Incomes of Families in Car Ownership study. The Preface states- this edition, is designed to avoid such extremes by providing the student with a thorough treatment of the important concepts, both simple and complex - This aspect is proved in every section of the book. Really it will help the student to develop their creativie and analytical marketing skills. A very good work.

This is a huge work of marketing research, both in terms of volume and importance. Although intended as a grounding in the foundations of market research, the book takes you further than that. As a result I was using it as a text at post-graduate level.

The book sets out to explain how to: Formulate your problem. Determine your research design. Design your collection method and forms. Design your sample and collect the data. Analyse and interpret the data. Prepare your research report.

It is then subdivided into sub sections. I was particularly impressed with the section on ethics, which was so clearly laid out that I used it as a guide when writing a pure ethics paper.

The book is amply supplied with examples and case studies to illustrate the text and make it useful in a more practical sense.

All in all a clear, accessible, well laid out and well indexed textbook.

Practical, deep, and complete

This book is an excellent introduction and advanced resource for all those that wish to be a marketing research professional (or to those that just want to understand it). The authors present in-depth explanations of the field's theory populated with day-to-day examples.

I have read it attentively more than once and it was a very useful resource for two courses in my masters: 'Research methods in markets and in organizations' and 'Data Analysis in Marketing'. In both courses, the Professors were really weak, and I learned most of the topics thanks to the book. Some of the themes treated in the book are:

Part 1: Marketing Research, the Research Process, and Problem definition. Part 2: Determine Research Design. Part 3: Design Data-Collection Method and Forms. Part 4: Sample Design and Data Collection. Part 5: Analysis and Interpretation of Data. Part 6: The Research Report.

The book fits academic as well as industry readers and the content justifies the price.

Very easy and fun reading. Hits all the right points that relate to project management. Examples are good, lots of creative ideas that I wasn't aware of and good reference to other books and material.

I would have liked to see more content on systems thinking and how they are applied in real life. Other than that, it is very un-common for me to read a book end to end. I enjoyed - and learned.

This is a excellent overview for General Management, Stakeholders, PMs and PM Team Members to used not only as an overview of Project Management, but as an advance guidance in the planning, scheduling and controlling methodology. Mr. Lewis's approach to Systems Thinking vice the linear thinking is well addressed. The Chapter on Managing Quality in Projects is excellent and stresses planning, customer needs, rework, and cost should be reviewed at all levels of the Enterprise from General Management to individuals striving to complete a project. I will place this book next to my copy his book, "The Project Manager's Desk Reference."

I do find I refer to this book and am glad I added it to my library.

After reading million books on derivative pricing, this one is the only one which defenitely combines a practical approach to it. And suddenly on Chapter 11, it puts it all together and effortless you can price any option with any payoff you can imagine, I got impress withmyself. I work at Credit Suisse First Boston and we have it in all the Quant's desks.

Hands-on & easy to read

Review Date: 2004-05-25
This is a great little book. I would put it in my category of 'original' books on quant finance, which includes books written by Paul Wilmott, Mark Joshi, Rick Osband and Neftci.

The reason being that the author uses a more informal style than most quant books and is very hands-on. If you're interested in understanding quant models and eventually applying them in the real world, then this is the kind of book you want. If you're looking for mathematical beauty and formalism, then look elsewhere.

The editors could have done a better job with some of the flow and formatting - maybe next edition (it is sometimes hard to link the text to the figures and tables).

Great book.

Very good coverage, practical orientation

Review Date: 2004-01-09
Consider first, this book's subtitle, "Tools for Incomplete Markets." A "complete market" (the kind assumed by the Black-Scholes-Merton model) is one in which any derivative product can be dynamically replicated by means of cash and the underlying asset. An incomplete market, then, is one is which the world of derivatives and their underlyings do not match each other in the point-by-point replicable manner implied by that definition of completeness. This failure to match makes for a necessary imperfection in hedging. That, of course, is the real world, where traders practice, as Scholes and Merton famously discovered in Greenwich, CT not long ago!

A variety of illustrations of this practical emphasis might be adduced. In the preface, for example, Dr. Cerný tells us frankly that in his experience "is it hard to understand the Itô calculus, but it is possible to get used to it and to apply it quickly and consistently...." [italics in original.]

An excellent introduction to financial mathematics

Review Date: 2007-01-06
I had the great pleasure of attending Dr. Cerny's lectures in mathematical techniques in finance. The lectures were structured around this book and were accordingly brilliant. The book starts off gently, to great relief for those who need to cover more basic mathematics in discrete time, before moving on to continous time and later introducing concepts such as Matingales and Browninan Motion. The book shows you how to derive such as the Black Scholes Formula, and introduces the Ito formula which is extensively used in pricing options.

Importantly, the book is clearly written and 'recycles' the exercises as it progresses from simple to more complex topics. I found this to be of great use since you already have an understanding of what the exercise is all about, intuitively and 'mechanically', and you can compare the methods and more readily understand what is going on in the more complex examples.

This book does not require a heave maths background. As always, the more the better, however, you can easily make great use of this book only with an understanding of simple calculus like derivatives and integrals. A basic understanding of linear algebra will also prove beneficial.

If you are looking for a book that will explain important concepts in finance, then this book is exactly what you are looking for.

Edwin L. Miller displays a powerful ability to present the complexity of Mergers and Acquisitions into understandable and straight-forward prose. His education from Harvard Law School and his 35 years of experience as a securities attorney form a powerful base from which to write, and he combines this with a potent talent to clearly convey the information he has gained over the decades into an accurate and digestible format that makes this book superior. This is a must-read for technologists, entrepreneurs, or anyone interested in selling or buying a venture. The book Lifecycle of a Technology Company, by the same author is also solid and informative. Easily five stars.

This book is an overview of Groove for people that have never used it and need to learn how to use it out-of-the-box.

I was hoping that this book would go into more detail on how to customize Groove using the Forms tool, but the book doesn't discuss the Form tool at all.

So far I have been unable to find any books that describe how to use the Groove Platform API to truly customize Groove to an organization's specific needs.

Groove

What is it?
A Tool Box for Project Managers or Information Managers
How does it do it??
Groove is set up with 10 to 15 tools that will assist in the process of infomation transfer. Each tool is explained to the "T", about not only how, but when & where the tool should be used.
Features glore.
The tools in MSGroove provide methods to track your meeting schedules, Meeteing Decisions, Meeting Notes and share the Project folders (Files), pictures, track issues, Alerts, project calendars, Integration of InfoPath forms, instant messages and the list goes on and on.
One important aspect is that the engineers realized you may need to use a specific tool over and over. Example is the calendar tool. You can create numerous calendars, for example, one calendar for each of your sub-contarctors, entering all the dates of expected work or information, then you can combine all the calendars into one complete calendar or combine any number of calendars together, somewhat like an overlay system adding one at a time to see if problems exist. Very Cool.
One small problem is that the sketch pad for doing your drawings needs to have an eraser for sketch errors
Groove can be a very powerful tool for any project PM or information manager. Combining this Program with "MS PROJECT" on the larger project side, provides complete project shareware anywhere.
Finally a ((secured workspace)) to share important information with your partners & Employees in business. Not only can you share information, you can also allocate responsibilities and see the follow up, through the use of the Alert system. This program works on a server or on any stand alone PC to PC. If your looking for better ways to control project information, this is your baby and Rick, John & Berry will take you through the information Step by Step.
My hat is off to the engineers of MS Groove.

Groove has been around for about 7 years now and since it was bought by Microsoft in 2004 has enjoyed increasing popularity and usage. What was always missing was a resource that allowed "Joe/Jane user" to really understand how to get the best out of this intriguing application.

Well, now you can quickly and easily make your self an expert or just a very competant user; thanks to this book. I have used Groove for a while and found some of the concepts a bit difficult to grasp. Groove is different and having an expert guide like this has helped me to open up a whole new world of possibilities and opportunites to use the tool to it's full extent.

If you have Groove (or are thinking aboout it) this is a MUST have!
