It is very current on recent pronouncements. The book is well organized, has good examples and it includes many "real world" examples as well

Formal Market Planning requires a structured and organized methodology to comprehensively formulate a series of initiatives to support goals, objectives, and a company mission. Let there be no misunderstandings, the Analysis for Marketing Planning is the gold standard to guide the reader through the process. Replete and well structured with excellent templates and good example, the reader is able to develop the proper content to complete a marketing plan. As professor of marketing at several universities and a practicing consultant, Analysis for Marketing Planning is the reference and text used to educate PhD candidates in the "best practice" of market planning. Get this book and be informed and armed with the best.

This is a good step-by-step detailed tool. It is not for a beginning student or business person. You do need some understanding of terms before you use this book, but once you have a background, this book can be a great asset.

It is a touch overpriced, but then again most textbooks are.

A whole marketing planning course into 200 pages! I am a MBA who was required to read this. This should be required reading for anyone in business - students and professionals. It covers everything from Competitor Analysis to Market Potential and Forecasting. You can become a marketing guru in less than a week.

Absolutely Fantastic!

While most marketing books talk at a very high level (targeted towards high-level managers in the organization) this book is the first of its kind that talks at the implementational level. This is a MUST READ for anybody interested in putting together action plans that can be used to get some real-world real-work done. I cannot stress enough how helpful this book has been to me in putting together my marketing plans (product/service based, product/service line based and brand based). Whats fascinating is how easy it is to read this book and quickly start to formalize executional plans. It covers varied topics in small concise chapters detailing different methodologies and where they can be applied. Topics covered range from competitive sets, industry analysis, customer analysis, forecasting markets, segments and everything a marketer needs to develop working marketing plans.

I constantly keep coming back to this book to evaluate how I am organizing my action plans and if I'm doing the right thing (from a process perspective).

I love this book. It was one of the first books I ever read on fundraising for nonprofits. And it provided me with much theory on the subject. I have read quite a few books on the fundamentals of fundraising and the tactics used to raise funds, but when I was reading them I ALWAYS thought back to a lot of what I read in Ms. Grace's book. I highly recommend ANY fundraiser get a copy of this book and read it. It doesn't matter if it serves as your introduction to the field, or as a night cap to your many readings on the subject. This book is well written and outlined with substantial substance between its covers.

The book is only 12 chapters long. And I think it would still serve its purpose if chapters 6 (annual giving programs), 7 (capital campaigns), and 9 (maximizing board development and participation) were deleted. I thought these three chapters were wonderful. Don't get me wrong. But the power of this book is in the other chapters.

Beyond fundraising is about how a fundraiser should approach her job. It is about inviting investment, not about begging for a gift. It's about working for a nonprofit with a worthy cause that is doing what it should with the money it receives. It's about planning and not about winging it. It's about how to help society be a better place. It's also about staying up with the times.

The author has been working as a consultant to nonprofits for many years. She has helped countless nonprofits with their fundraising efforts. She has presented many seminars on fundraising fundamentals. And this book in a way is a summary of what she has covered in her seminars. The author has also written many published articles on fundraising. Accordingly, she is an authority on the subject. In my humble opinion, this book is her best effort and contribution to the field. 5 stars!

Kay Sprinkel Grace is a wonderfully warm person whose personal mission is to help others develop their non-profit organizations to make the world a little better.

This book will help any development professional tie it all together is an easy to understand way. It will also be useful to organization volunteers who are affiliated with your organizations, particularly members of your board of directors.

Gives a Strategic View of Every Aspect of Fundraising

Review Date: 2005-08-19
I picked up this book just as the board of directors of the local theater group sent me to set up a campaign to raise capital for a new building. All of a sudden I was faced with the idea of raising lots of money instead of just the small amounts we need to put on individual productions.

To my surprise, although I guess I shouldn't have been, Chapter 7 is on Capital Campaigns. She summarizes them as: 'unique, occasional, exhausting, exciting, and productive; they focus organizations on a particular goal during a finite period of time and allow us to sharpen our sense of purpose and impact.' To that I can only say: Yup!

Ms. Grace has obviously been there, done that, not only in raising money for capital, but every other kind of fundraising activity as well.

This book is well written, and it positioned at a higher level than most fundraising books. By that I mean that she treats fundraising as almost an art form. Something where you don't need to feel like you're begging for a handout. Highly recommended.

Book is great for those who want to know how bond trading really works, especially for those just starting out. Good for both salespeople and traders. However, the book is a decade old and has little on ETS and other recent developments. It also has many, many errors which are irritating, thus the 4/5. I should hope that these points are addressed in a second edition. It is otherwise well-written.

Here they all are in one package in STORY form. Some of us learn better by illustration and this certainly provides that opportunity. What a fabulous experience!

I have used this book daily since I got it as a student. Every time I work with a new recipe, I check with the Book of Yields to determine amounts. Every new ingredient I come across is included. The Book of Yields also helps me save a lot of money by keeping me from wasting food. I use the Book of Yields at home, too. If I have a large quantity recipe, this book helps me figure out how to scale it down.

I've bought this book as my first reference book of accounting. I've checked out other books about accounting in the local book store but none suits me as this one. The accouting terms are concisely defined and the examples are precisely worked out while other books, which content is obscure and structured in a slovenly way, is an eyesore that confused me.

This book is recommended for any purpose because it gives detail and sufficient information to every topic, covers and accord with the criteria and requirements established by various prominent examinations, so when I finish this book and take one of these exams, I certainly won't botch up it and have confidence in achievement.

Very helpful and insighful book. The explanations to the answers to the questions were really helpful. Also, the practice exams on the CD were a big help. Another part of the book that helps is the e-book. However, you can't print out the e-book unless you download .pdf software that will get rid of the non-printing restriction. A bit selfich, is you ask me. But I guess it's a good way to prevent people from reselling the content as a .pdf file.

The PMP Test is an experience in itself. It requires hours of studying and memorizing all the terms, processes, process groups, inputs, tools & techniques, outputs, knowledge areas, and Earned Value Management formulas. This book interprets the PMBOK language into understandable english. It also follows the PMBOK, chapter by chapter, section by section, so it's easy to read the PMBOK and then the book to see what the PMBOK is really trying to say. This was the only textbook I used for studying for the exam. What else can I say, but "I PASSED"!

As always, the Nolo bankruptcy books are the only way to go when it comes to self-help books for the non-lawyer. Plus, the latest edition appears to have updated the summary of the 50 states various exemptions, an improvement from before.

Interestingly, the latest edition appears to be biased in favor of creditors' interests a little more than it was in the previous editions.

A remarkable overview of the direct marketing business

Review Date: 2008-05-23
I own an earlier edition of this book, written before
the internet stuff was added.

Still, Drayton Bird is a fine writer and he explains
things lucidly and he has hella' experience and knows
of that which he writes.

He has a good sense of humor. Sort of droll.

No book can cover it all, but this one does a good job
of touching on major points any direct marketer should
really get a grasp of.

It isn't until about half-way through that Bird gets into
Copywriting but he covers a lot of ground quickly in this
area. If you write copy you SHOULD read a lot of books
and read a lot of copy - one book doesn't do it.

It's not obvious to everyone but there are some "copywriters"
out there that don't actually know marketing very well.
They are best avoided if you are paying for copy, and this
book will help you a lot if you are thinking of writing
your own copy or thinking of hiring somebody to do it for you.

Favorite quote (of many):

"If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys"

Funny guy, that Bird.

Every good idea in a book deserves a wipe of a highlighter pen. My copy of this book ended up with over half of the page real estate in fluorescent yellow.

Why? It's full of excellent tips, encouragement and dry humour for anyone who communicates in print - and that's most of us. And for once, the testimonials are accurate; his ex-employer, David Ogilvy (of Ogilvy & Mather fame) says "Drayton Bird knows more about direct marketing than anyone else in the world. His book about it is pure gold".

His only deviates from his own advice once - there is no address to reply to him. Apart from that, I recommend this to all my friends - and hide it from my enemies!

Possibly a great book for those that know something alreadytoo, just look at the endorsements. Not a step by step book - no hardand fast rules to DM - goes to the principals derives guidelines and provides examples. A good approach that suited me - I always want to know why something should be done a certain way not just follow a prescription.

This book contains all of the information you need to know about direct marketing. It puts aside the myth regarding the 1-2% return on mailings. I had no idea that a 50% return was possible! The book is full of proven advice and tips; planning, list selection, the offer, pricing...it goes on and on. Reading it from cover to cover gave me the information necessary to execute my own mailing which cost me less than $200 but reaped close to $100,000. Read it!
