This book is very good for all types of projects. It covers setting up a project, organizing the work, managing a project, handling several projects at once, dealing with project issues and crises, using modern technology such as groupware and the Internet. The approach of establishing an issues data base and relating issues to specific tasks in a project is unique. It is very useful.

This is one of the best project management books for introducing employees to modern project management in an interesting way. Most project management books are ver dry and lack realistic examples. Thus, it is difficult to motivate people to read and use such materials. This is a very practical, down to earth book that has many guidelines that you can use immediately as you read the book. Some of the strengths of the book are: 1) best description of matrix management; 2) use of collaborative tools in managing projects; 3) how to deal with multiple projects; 4) how to share resources across several projects; 5) how to deal with risk in projects. The authors have developed a very creative and useful approach in dealing with project risk that associates project risk with unresolved issues. I highly recommend this book.

Project management for the 21st century is one of the most usable, easy to read, and complete project management books. There are good examples. Techniques are modern--better than that available in other books. This books stresses working together, sharing information, and dealing with resources that are spread among various projects. Very good reference.

This book provides the basics of project management in an easy to use casual style. It proceeds step by step through building a plan and then managing a project. The chapter on project costing is good, but could use some more detail. The modern and historical examples are usefully examined. These could be expanded more later.

I don't think too many people know about this book, however, everyone should. It is an easy, quick read culminating Graham's entire philosophy. It also includes interviews near the end of his great life- and still then his mind is sharp.

Another thing I found interesting was in the last interviews of the book, Graham had begun to believe that investing should be extremely simple- and I mean extremely simple- rather than the long, drawn out process that he had been doing his entire career. I will leave you with one quote:

They called it the "Bible of Graham and Dodd." Yes, well now I have lost most of the interest I had in the details of security analysis which I devoted myself to so strenuously for many years. I feel that they are relatively unimportant, which, in a sense, has put me opposed to developments in the whole profession. I think we can do it successfully with a few techniques and simple principles. The main point is to have the right general principles and the character to stick to them.

Janet Lowe's book delivers. Want to know what a genius of finance thinks about investing, the stock market and economics? Buy this book. Each time I read it, I discover a new insight which previously eluded me. Truly a great book and I recommend it to all investors of any level of investment sophistication.

I've profited handsomely in a real-time portfolio over less than 6 months from ideas accumulated from my reading of this nice collection of articles. Before picking up this text, I expected it would contain mainly writings from Graham's earliest years --writings destined to be melded into the first edition of "Security Analysis." There are a couple of such pieces, but I was most taken with the pieces written towards the end of his life. Some of these are interviews. Graham generated financial ideas for the individual investor until the very end of his life, and this book is currently the only published repository for these. I'm not sure if someone just coming to Benjamin Graham will derive the greatest benefit from this book, but anyone who has a passiing familiarity with "Security Analysis", "The Intelligent Investor" and "The Interpretation of Financial Statements" will derive great pleasure and a goodly number of valuable insights from this collection.

Janet Lowe has done an outstanding job collating and introducing each section of this book of previously unpublished articles, lectures, and interviews from the father of value investing. I believe anyone reading this book will get a huge value out of it. This book is a great addition to Mr. Graham's books. It is also a great book to read for those new to Graham's teachings of buying good stocks when their prices are below intrinsic value. Graham's methods of finding good stocks at fair prices by examining their equity to asset ratios, book value, and P/E multiples brought the Graham-Newman partnership over a 20% annual return on equities for 20 years. Followed by his pupil Warren Buffet using and refining his techniques to return over 20% a year for 40 years and eventually lead Warren Buffett to be worth $40 billion thanks to using his value investing for the holding company Berkshire-Hathaway. I sit up and listen to anything these two great men have to say. I also recommend reading Graham's Intelligent Investor and Security Analysis, and "The essays of Warren Buffett" by Cunningham.

I'm a programmer based in Silicon Valley and have received stock options over the years. No question, there is a lot of misinformation on the subject. Then again, the subject is extremely complex! However, when reading Taulli's book, things became much clearer. The sections on AMT were especially done well. If you want to understand your stock options, Taulli's book is a great choice.

Congradulations, Tom. Finally, someone has written a book that is understandable and readable for the financially saavy and not so saavy tech employee... This book contains information that is essential for (i) the employee who is interested in knowing the good and less than good about stock options and (ii) the executive and board who needs to correctly incentivize the employee base. Tom's book outlines the types of options available, how options work, and their tax and securities law treatments. The section on negotiation is particularly interesting and contains information not often available in a book directed at those of us who don't care to read a legal treatise. This book is well worth the read. Good luck and may your stock options be everything you hope them to be.

This book tremendously helped me negotiate a good option plan for a private company I recently went to work for. I would have taken the company's original offer and would have overlooked important terms in my plan and if I did not read this book. Anyone who is offered an option plan must read this book. I can not stress it enough. I learned they are as negotiable as my salary and benefits. It scares me to think of what I would have left on the table.

'365 Ways to Motivate and Reward Your Employees Every Day--With Little or No Money' is a terrific book for all managers and business owners. This book teaches you how to think like an employee, rather than thinking like a big wig. Then it gives you all the suggestions you need to motivate your employees and keep them motivated for an infinite amount of time. And that last part is really the key to this book. You don't want to motivate your employees for a day or a week. You want to keep them motivated for as long as they work for you.

I enjoyed reading the parts of the book that explained the importance of motivation, but I was even more impressed by all of the great techniques. This book is written in a fun, easy manner that made me excited to get to the `good stuff.' The gift ideas are all very clever (like supplying morning coffee for a year) and so are the suggestions on how to make the office fun (like adding a "Whine Cellar"). I especially liked all of the ideas on how to give employees time off of work, because it honestly never even crossed my mind to reward productivity with down time.

Overall, I think this is a terrific book and I can't wait to implement these ideas in my workplace. If you are a business owner or manager, I strongly recommend that you read this book. Even if you only follow a few of the suggestions, I think your company is bound to improve.

This is one of those books where you expected one thing and are pleasantly surprised to receive something else. Well, not entirely something else, there certainly is a list of 322 (not 365!) ways to motivate your employees, but that's the last half of the book. The first half is a great business book on motivation and the necessity to create a motivational work environment.

In fact, I found the fist half of the book more interesting than the second half and I say that without knocking the second half whatsoever. 365 covers motivational theory, internal and external motivational factors, management methods and also provides a series of motivational questions to ask employees and new hires to ensure you are able to provide the best motivational environment for their needs.

The second half of 365 covers a number of easy-to-do motivational rewards. While most businesses won't be able to do all of them there are a number of cheap and easy ideas that every business should implement. Not stopping with their own list, the book concludes with a monthly calendar of special days that will allow you to make your own motivational rewards.

Regardless of your work environment, every company can use a few motivational tips. 365 provides 322 of them and a framework to create hundreds more of your own. This is a book that won't be put on my bookshelf, but will remain close by as a reference for things I can do to reward my employees.

This book has so many great accounting best practices it should serve as a goal for every company. It is an invaluable reference guide to anyone who is just starting a business, or needing to improve the efficiency of their accounting functions.
I most liked the fact that the book is so easy to read. You won't have to be a CPA to understand this book.
My only suggestion is that the book should have a companion CD or web site with all of the best practices already in an electronic format.

I found Accounting Best Practices a valuable resource for objectively evaluating my accounting department's business practices and procedures. Mr. Bragg has identified the specific tasks of each of the accounting departments's functions and has made suggestions for efficiencies. The author states the key factors in the successful implementation of the best practices in accounting.

Each chapter presents an exhibit of "Implementation Issues Best Practices" describing the implementation costs, ease and duration of each suggested practice change. This information allowed me to implement the easiest and least costly changes to my accounting department's procedures, thus gaining credibility with upper managment to support the changes involving addional resources.

As a Controller, Best Practices assisted me to focus on the value-added tasks of my department and identifying where my staff's efforts are best utilized to support the corporate objectives. My department has become more efficient, allowing for individual growth opportunities. I highly recommend this book for anyone managing an accounting department. A very concise book that is easy to read and use.

Wish they had more books like these that give practical suggestions instead of theory.

I bought an earlier edition of this book before my law school exam 15 years ago. I ended up with the second highest exam score in the class. I practice consumer bankruptcy law now and I still go back to this book sometimes. It explains complex concepts very simply which is good for both law students and lawyers trying to find a simple way to explain bankruptcy law to clients. The diagrams and flow charts are very useful, too.

I am an experienced lawyer and regularly read books (usually one-volume treatises) outside my practice area. Comprehensive books on bankruptcy are hard to find, and I purchased Blum's for lack of any alternative. The book is well organized, clearly written, and contains a lot of information. Even the attempts at humor are generally successful.

To offer some unsolicited advice to law students, I don't recommend using this or any supplementary texts in your courses. Stick with the casebook and other materials the instructor assigns. It may seem as if this requires more effort to learn the subject than is warranted, but you won't regret it. You'll never have the time once you start working to reread and think about cases that you have while in school. That 3 years may seem like a long time, but if you take it seriously you will benefit significantly throughout your career. It is surprising how often I encounter exprienced lawyers who are ignorant of matters I learned in law school (now long past) and still remember.

I first heard about a job as a Celebrity Personal Assistant from some overdramatized, hyped show promising all sorts of glam and goodies. When I went to begin a more serious inquiry into it as a real career I found a lot of equally useless websites and guides that just glossed over the "perks" and didn't detail any real practical advice on this topic. Until I found Beyond the Red Carpet. This is a comprehensive book that offers a complete view of the vital role that Personal Assistants play in the world of celebrities and high profile successful people. It offers a clear list of the skills, temperments and abilities required for this job as well as sound, concrete steps that you can take to be successful in this career. At about 25 bucks you get a wealth of knowledge, know-how and insight. It covers the pitfalls, expectations and some of the frustatrations one might face as well as the upside - well balanced, clearly written and practical it's obvious that the writer knew her topic throughly - living it not just reporting or glamourizing it. Despite an incredibly tight budget, I invested the extra monies to take the actual workshop at their Atlanta headquarters and found their help invaluable. This is a professional text written by a talented, focused and knowledgeable woman and is a link to a much broader network of experience and expertise. I was frustrated and lost before attending and through the staff's help, the information from this text and meeting other dynamic individuals pursuing this challenging, but exciting career; I found the inspiration to make a new, more focused start. After getting home I rewrote my resume using their suggestions and was told that my it stood out amid over 400 who had applied for an Executive Assistant/Personal Assistant job to a local CEO. The comment by the HR person was - Yours was the first resume that made me stop what I was doing and pick up the phone to call you. I've accepted the position and am happily pursuing it as the next step to building the kind of experience that will land me a Celebrity position. Don't be fooled by the sales pitch flashy books out there. If you're serious about this as a career - get this book and look into their workshop. I found the author and her entire staff to be bright, energetic and talented business professionals with the experience and connections to make great things happen. RHExecAssistant at AOL

August Aquila and Bruce Marcus have written a clear and comprehensive view of what every accounting or law marketer needs to know about this new, unprecedented professional services environment. Their book not only explains the new environment, but it's also a rich primer of practical "how-to" advice on all the marketing tools available to the professional services marketer. Strategy is fine, but I find that few books get down to the step-by-step implementation tactics involved in winning new business like this book does - that's one of its best points of differentiation. After reading it, I bought copies for every one of my regional, industry, service line and national marketing leaders.

This book should burnish the authors' already high reputations for having cogent, jargon-free, and street-smart things to say about what it's really like to try to market professional services. An unusual blend of (clear and lucidly stated) theory about marketing, and real-world insights into obstacles clients can throw up--not to mention the high barrier of internal resistance that "professionals" instinctively erect when asked to be marketers--this should be your starting point if you're facing the complexities of marketing in this environment.

Think that "marketing is just common sense?" Think again; it's both a discipline and an art. Aquila and Marcus will guide your hand at both.

In "Client at the Core: Marketing and Managing Today's Professional Services Firm," (Wiley, 2004) August J. Aquila, based in Minnetonka, Minn., and Bruce W. Marcus, in Easton, Conn., a pair of veteran consultants, combine their considerable experience, skill and insight into a veritable strategic planning operator's manual for today's consulting firm.

From the outset, they acknowledge "the professional world doesn't need another book on how to write a press release or write a brochure or run a seminar."

Instead, they provide a new perspective on the crucial subject of how to keep firms relevant to the needs of the marketplace -- mainly, creating clients and building a marketing culture.

They don't get tied up in ideas like "vision," or "mission."

Instead they talk about the new realities of the 21st Century and professions in turmoil: dot-coms gone bust, a stock market meltdown, and a rash of frauds, defalcations, misuse of corporate funds; and then a reformist reaction, still unfolding, that the authors term "a helter-skelter regulatory rush that was at least as punitive as it was appropriate. It would seem that the regulatory garment was cut to fit all, when all don't wear the same size."

"The time is past when just the presence of the professional was its own comfort factor. It's long been believed that the concept of the professional was so exalted, and so trusting, that people accepted advice unquestioningly. No more. The scandals of 2002 and 2003 seem to have bred a diminished - if unwarranted -- respect for professionals," they say.

"Traditionally, professional services have been a seller's market," according to Aquila and Marcus. But now the tables are turned. "It is now a buyer's market."

For today's professionals, here are six lessons you can take to the bank according to the authors:

1. Clients are more sophisticated. They no longer accept advice without questioning, challenging, demanding more reasoning and detail.

2. Because of the complexity of business today, clients demand that their professionals know more about the client's business and industry than ever before.

3. Professional services always function best when trust is at the heart of the relationship, but the corporate scandals of recent years have eroded that trust. That trust must now be regenerated. And the workings of trust are more important in the new economy than in the old.

4. Once the narrow structures of a profession were sufficient to serve clients. But clients now demand a broader spectrum of capabilities. The more broadly educated and well-rounded professional is the one with the greater advantage in meeting the needs of today's client. Clients demand that accountants know more than the basic skills of accounting.

5. Competition is now a fact of life. Clients know they have a choice.

Clients know the difference between marketing promises and professional services delivery. Today's client demands more real service and solutions -- not just a warm personal relationship.
To Aquila and Marcus, the new paradigm of professional services requires a new demand for partnership with the client and new participatory skills.

As they say: It's a buyers' market. Get used to it.

Real Estate isn't as easy money as some people think it is. "Confessions of a Real Estate Mini-Mogul: How to Succeed in Real Estate Investing Despite Ghosts, Pitbulls, Annoying Tenants, and the Government" is a how to guide that blends its advice with a good dose of humor and entertainment. The advice outlines the positives and negatives that go with every sort of investment, finding good opportunities, and how Zen Buddhism principles can be the difference between success and failure for an aspiring investor. "Confessions of a Real Estate Mini-Mogul" is a strong choice for anyone looking to break into the real-estate game.

I found this to go beyond the Usual How To books. The author shares his own experiances with us in a self depreciating way that makes one chuckle as you learn how to avoid the pitfalls that he himself already suffered. I think this is a good read even if you dont ever plan to buy a single piece of property.

This book is very well written in a breeay, easy to read style. It covers all aspects of real estate ownership, management and investing including what to look for in acquiring property, negotiating with sellers, financing, dealing with tenants, the role of local governmental agencies and does so in a humurous manner. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the nuts and bolts of real estate investing.

Even I Understand Real Estate After Reading this Book

Once in a while you come across a writer who makes life easier for you. Years ago I wanted to develop assisted living facilities and I went to classes on tax credits, the how-to of what to build, even financial classes about real estate development. I learned a lot - but there were few books available to help me understand, in a step-by-step fashion how development, partnerships, project management etc. all work.

Jim Pockross has filled the holes in my education with this handy book that allows me to say "now I see how it is done". You wind up with a complete sense of how to invest whatever money you have wisely. You don't have to be a millionaire to do it - you just need to understand the process, the finances of the deal and how to evaluate the deal itself.

I heartily recommend you buy this book. Even if you don't intend to invest in real estate after reading the book you will know how it all works. It really does make your life easier.

A must read for anyone considering real estate investments!

The market these days is saturated with bad books and videos on how to make a fortune in real estate, and the current economic crisis has brought out a lot of bottom feeders-but unexpectedly, Mr. Pockross's new book, Confessions of a Real Estate Mini-Mogul, is one of the best books that I have seen on the subject. It is a hive of useful information for anyone entering or engaged in real estate transactions, going into detail in sticky areas that most "how to" real estate books breeze over in a paragraph or two.

Anyone seeking a quick and easy path to fame and fortune will probably find this book a disappointment. As suggested by the subtitle: How to Succeed in Real Estate Investing Despite Ghosts, Pit bulls, Annoying Tenants and the Government implies, real estate can be a very complex and frustrating enterprise. Mr. Pockross frames his tome with an account of his personal experiences during the period during which he built his business. Through in-depth anecdotes, he humanizes the business, while
conveying many of its many real-life challenges.

One impressive chapter for example, analyzes what makes a good deal, using real examples and going through the numbers and detailing the outlays, expenses, risks and revenues in a way that anyone with a legal pad and a stub of pencil will be able to appreciate. He also discusses a wide range of real estate investments, including the purchase and holding of raw land, the owning or controlling of residential, commercial, retail, mixed use, and industrial properties; and supplies notes on
investing in development projects. Other subjects include the perils of
partnerships, tips on how to negotiate, coping with appraisals, financing, closing and management. Finally there is a lot of information on issues related to governance and government; availability of federal loans (FHA, VA, GNMA, FNMA), governmental regulations, taxes (& fees & fines), and zoning issues. To enliven the text and give it a moral compass, Pockross attaches a chapter on his Buddhist beliefs and how they influence his business practices. This fine book is a must read for anyone seriously considering real estate investments.

"CRM: Getting it Right" by Ms. Judith Kincaid is a must for everyone who plans to play any role in a CRM project. It is particularly useful for CRM project managers since it lays out an excellent overview of the entire lifecycle of a CRM implementation. It is in fact a complete and exhaustive case study which walks the reader through every step.

Ms. Kincaid's excellent use of plain English and narrative method puts this book within the reach of a very wide audience. She succeeds in translating complex issues into layman's terms which any level reader could easily follow and benefit from. The clear writing is complemented with excellent visuals that make the material even more accessible. The book is very well organized and is full of practical tips and advice. Even experts in the field could benefit from this material by taking a bird's eye view journey and/or by zooming into smaller details as necessary.

The book is also full of ready to use excellent templates. Needles state, I highly recommend this book.

Enjoy it!

This CRM book really stands out from the pack! Kincaid has written a great practical guide for harried business people who
want to know what customer relationship management really means and what they should do before they run out to buy software to "do CRM." The case studies were very helpful in program planning and the templates saved a good deal of time getting going.
For anyone in business who needs to manage a team of business experts and information technology experts in a major project, this is THE book to buy. From definition to planning, implementation and measurement, this handbook for change gets you started and provides real guidance along the way.

Judith does an exceptional job in laying out both the overview and the details for a CRM program in any organization. She obviously has a wealth of experience in what to do and what not to do in developing and maintaining a CRM program. I especially like her interest in definitions, such as the definition of a customer and the definition of customer loyalty. Key ideas are clearly outlined throughout the book and I found it very easy to read and follow. Very helpful book for this subject matter.
