New York Neighborhoods: A Food Lover's Walking, Eating and S
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-26
There are many wonderful things about this book: the maps are beautifully designed and easy to read; the drawings are lovely and truly capture the spirit of the neighborhoods; and the food glossary is very good. But the content vastly oversimplifies the neighborhoods - and thus shortchanges the reader - and in some cases the suggested walking routes seem dubious. Since I also write about food and have led bicycle and walking tours in the neighborhoods since 1983, I am perhaps hypercritical about this type of information, but I feel that readers are entitled to accuracy and, for those intrepid enough to do the tours the author lays out, the best possible experience. Frankly, I had to wonder how thoroughly the author actually cased out the areas she wrote about; she often writes as if she is in a huge hurry! In some instances, she lists a few food items you'll find in a restaurant or market, but I was curious about whether she'd actually tried the items she mentioned! (No, it's not necessary to try everything - but it would be nice to have some anecdotes about the eating experience.) Her portrayal of Astoria, Queens, as a Greek neighborhood overlooks the fact that Astoria is much more ethnically complex (including south Asian, Eastern European and Latin American), and has several blocks of Egyptian cafes and markets - unique in NYC. Her recommended walking tour of Harlem includes two blocks of 124th Street - an ugly stretch in an otherwise landmarked area - and some wrong information, i.e. Apollo Theater is incorrectly marked. I don't know how much editorial oversight the author had on the maps, but these errors are misleading. Books like these are hard to do well - information changes even as the books are being written and are in production. But misinformation or inadequate information reflects less than thorough research.

AN OBSOLETE BOOK WITH OBSOLETE INFORMATION

I AM SO DISAPPOINTED TO READ THIS BOOK; IT IS SUCH A WASTE OF TIME. ALL EXAMPLES AND INFORMATION IN THIS BOOK IS FROM 1960s THROUGH EARLY 1990s. NOTHING IN THIS BOOK RELATES TO WHAT IS HAPPENING TODAY(2000 THRU 2006)BECAUSE THIS BOOK WAS PUBLISHED IN 1996. VERY POORLY WRITTEN BOOK AND THROUGH OUT THE BOOK ALL YOU WILL SEE IS A NEGATIVE TONE ABOUT THE SHOPPING CENTER DEVELOPENT AND INVESTMENT. I THINK THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK SHOULD BE " HOW TO AVOID INVESTMENT IN SHOPPING CENTER INDUSTRY...."
I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY BODY WHAT SO EVER.

Fabulous Business Retail Advise

Review Date: 2007-01-09
This book is a must read for any retailer or wholesaler needing to re-envent themselves regarding understanding how the consumer buys and what they must do to grab the consumers attention. It is not all about price. The shopping habits are changing and the retailer needs to understand that they must also change in order to survive todays business environment. Pam has really nailed this one from all angles and support comes from her complete research findings. Great Job and REMARKABLE INFORMATION.

Don't waste your time

This book is terrible - based on a "formula" that is pure conjecture and intuitively incorrect: Your likelihood of buying something is equal to (Need + Feature set + Affordability) x Emotion^2.

To suggest that your propensity (to use her word) to buy something will always increase with each additional feature is obviously wrong. Too many features kills a product.

To suggest that your propensity is affected by the square of your emotional response (to the retail store you are in or something else) is completely without evidence. At best, the idea that emotion has more impact than the other terms is argueable. To couch that idea in a mathematical "formula" suggests the author is a charlatan.

Furthermore, the book interrupts the flow of text with magazine style "sound bites", which gives the impression the author either believes that a) the reader is skimming and needs to be prompted to stop and read this section, or b) the author is in such love with her prose it needs to be repeated a second time in larger font.

Don't waste your time (let alone your money) with this book.

I got this book before a trip to Rio and it was a waste of space! It was so vague, you could get the same information from any hotel. It's also not helpful to write a guide like this in novel form - we need lists and adresses and numbers. There weren't a lot of specifics and not that many stores given the book's size.

I bought this book hoping that the financial editor of Money Magazine would give me some real nuggets of wisdom on car leasing. Alas, this book favored me with basic information available in magazine articles -- which is probably where he gleaned his material. I would love to see a more in-depth and careful analysis of the subject

Having purchased the book to help plan my tour of Venice, I was rather disheartened to find that Venice is covered in a mere 40 pages. The text of those 40 is, however, quite informative. Of the eight Venetian hotels listed in the Cheapskate's Guide, only 2 offer a night of double room occupancy for less than $200 US dollars. Perhaps a guide for cheapskates in Venice should mention campgrounds ($25 a night) rather than the Hotel Gritti Palace (as high as $572) or the Cipriani (as high as $734).

Women and the world of goods
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-08
This slim and accessible book is a study of the ideological construction of modern female subjectivity in relation to the emergence of consumer culture. Wallace argues that the relationship between the world of women and the world of goods can be understood by semiotic connections. She employs a symbolic approach and a scholarly popular concept of Micheal Foucault's discursive discipline to examine "three cultural movements" surrounding the tea table, shopping, and business. The book can be counted an interdisciplinary study which applies a range of feminist, linguistic, and historicist strategies, it can be seen as a good example of literary analysis. Wallace's investigation of female subjectivity as consumer and commodity in relation to consumerism places strong emphasis on the interpretation of the eighteenth-century literature. Therefore, the book will be more comprehensible if the reader has some background in the study of eighteenth-century literature and likes to read an academic style which leans more to literary than historical analysis.
