Lots of recipes to try at a low cost
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 41 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-08
Didn't care for some of the recipes in the book. In one chapter, she takes God's name in vain which is why I rated it 1 star.
This book gives advice on saving money such as cutting down on grocery costs and cooking from scratch. This is how the book is organized:
Introduction
Fish and Shellfish
Pasta and Rice
Poultry
Vegetarian Entrees
Red Meats
Beans
Eggs and Cheese
Breads and Deserts
Stocking a $10.00 a day kitchen

For each recipe, she tells you how much it costs per serving, how many people that recipe feeds and how long it takes to make that recipe.
In the last chapter, it gives advice on what kind of herbs, seasonings, canned/dtied goods should be stocked in your pantry and refrigerated goods. The book also includes recipes for condiments, flavorings, herbs, leavening extracts, sweeteners, thickeners and milk & cream.

Not only did this book help me cut my grocery bill in HALF, but my husband says he looks forward to coming home and seeing what new and tasty dish is for dinner! Linda's book provides a program for shopping & meal planning that is quick and easy. She also gives great cooking technique help - I finally know how to make a perfect omelet effortlessly! And with all her personal insight, it reads like a novel! Best cookbook I've ever bought.

One of the best collections of basic recipes I've found yet. Linda West Eckhardt has made an easy to follow cookbook that can be used on a day to day basis. I find myself going back to the recipes again and again, adding my family's flavor to some and keeping others just so. The ingredients are quick, easy to find and inexpensive. If you cook on a regular basis, or are tired of fast food for a busy family , this is a cookbook you need.

When I first read this book I wasn't sure it would really work the way it says it will. But I have been able to save hundreds of dollars already and am planning a three-day trip down to North Carolina because I already know I can save much much more. The author is to be commended for her time and research on this subject. She has enabled many other like myself to furnish and decorate our homes in an affordable way, and still have the high quality we want. I heartily recomment this book to anyone shopping for furniture!!!

decent, but not great

Fodor's guidebooks are decent in that they provide short, simple facts and info on destinations. The Toronto guidebook is no different. The big complaint is the lack of good maps (though i can't be too picky, you can't really rely on maps in a paperback guidebook!). I tend to prefer frommer's guides, as i find their recommendations to be more bang on, and to my budget. I recommend using a combination of good guidebooks like frommers and Let's Go, in addition to the traveler-submitted hotel review sites like www.zoomandgo.com, or the ones on travelocity.

A fine book and great for first time travelers

I mainly use and still buy Fodor's series for most of my traveling for ease of use of the book and familiarity. However, I do have to admit that the maps could be more detailed. For budget or more seasoned travelers who prefer a detailed map of the walking tours and do not need the section about how to pack and where to keep your passport try the awesome Lonely Planet or something else. On the historical stuff, I would say this book is just fine. On my next travel (not to Toronto) I'll try Let's Go and Frommer's, heard lots of goody stuff about them and never use them before.

Reasonable city guide but mildly bland for Toronto.

This book begins with a short yet reasonable first orientation to the city with much of its bulk devoted to simple data in categorized lists.

Probably quite useful to someone who has never been to Toronto before but not the stimulating read the present-day "Megacity" deserves.

My personal impression was that while the guide does explicitly note the excitement of this new, diverse first city of Canada, it doesn't go far enough to actually capture or express it.

Yes, it is a fine book for what it is -- a city guide with lots of basic information -- but even there I had a couple of points of contention.

For one thing, as soon as I opened the book and saw the map of Toronto's location between Michigan and New York state, which I did like, I wondered, however, why one of the major freeways -- the 402 from Port Huron -- was left off.

Another example was the piece of information connecting Canada's federal official French-English language policy and highway signs. One has nothing to do with the other since traffic signs, regulations and highways are totally under Provincial not Federal jurisdiction. What concerned me here was the thought of visiting drivers getting the impression that driving regulations might be consistent throughout Canada.

It seems like the book is primarily targeted to Americans. If I am correct, Americans already know that Toronto is a new, big and exciting city before they even bother to pick up a book on it. The city guide which describes Toronto deserves to be a lot more motivating than that level of excitement which Fodor's standard format relegates to it's run-of-the-mill city guides.

This is really a reference book without much in the way of advice or strategy. It does literally what the description says and nothing more. This book was written by and for the man who is clueless about lingerie and is petrified at entering a lingerie store. If you have little fear of such stores and can read the Victoria's Secret catalog, you may not have much use for this book. I spent a fair amount of time trying to find something in this book that was really useful to me. About the only thing was the size guide. The book is fairly brief and the publisher/author made it push over 100 pages by including a wide flowery graphic in the margin of each page, leaving only half the page available for text. Do I need to be told that department stores carry lingerie? No. Do I need a brief history of lingerie? No, but it is interesting. Do I need 'bra' and 'panties' defined? No. Do I need a comparison of retail shopping versus mail order? No. The author defines all the basic lingerie items, but unfortunately uses hand drawn graphics rather than actual photos. In the section on mail order sources, the author lists just three: JC Penney, Spiegel, and Victoria's Secret. How about Frederick's of Hollywood? Or Sears? He couldn't even fill up the page with all the well-known sources, let alone find some we haven't heard of!

In praise of "Terrific Totes"

I first got this book out of the library, and because I liked it so much I looked it up on Amazon. SFDesigner says in her review that it is not clear in its instructions, but I find it very clear and straightforward. Sewing is not an easy concept to put across in a book. I have read a great many sewing books and some are a lot better than others, but even the good ones have to be studied and thought about many times before the concept sinks in. I don't think that photos necessarily help. I have tried and tried to follow some photographic steps, and simply haven't grasped the point. I have made a tote bag and two of the Artists' Paraphernalia Pockets from this book, and everything has come together excellently. I am going to make the Hemp and Tapestry Rucksacks next. I am really happy with this book.

Good Concept But Not Enough Information

I am an intermediate-level sewer. I sew craft items and clothing. What I liked about this book: lots of different kinds of bags, portfolios and wallets. Just what I was looking for in variety. What I didn't like: There were virtually no step-by-step illustrations/photos of the bags in process (there might have been a couple of visual details, but in general no). Most projects take up a couple of pages, but what that includes is a photo of the completed project and then some paragraphs describing how to make it. I read through many of the projects, and I just found this confusing. It made me not want to try any of the projects. Three paragraphs describing how to make a rather complicated project is just not enough for me... because there are various pieces of fabric that need to be attached to each other in different ways, and it's not like they're just saying, "sew the back to the front." It would have been SO MUCH BETTER if each project would have had a handful of detailed step-by-step illustrations/photos, showing exactly what they meant about how the pieces related together and helped with the details of the actual assembly process. I'm disappointed because I was really looking forward to this book -- but in actuality, this ended up being the first book I've ever bought at Amazon that I sent back for a refund.

The rucksack on the front of this book doesn't seem to be as hard as it looks. I like the tapestry rucksack a little better. While I like the book and have no plans to return it, the "business on the run" was a bit disappointing. I was hoping for something closer to a big briefcase or other suitable bag that didn't look like a tote bag. The "Two Totes in One" I made recently is great, and I hope to make more. I suggest a heavy fabric if you are going to be carrying heavy books like I do. The "Double Duty" bag is also one I like, and will try that when I find the right fabric. The City Pack is another for "one day," I really like it. I plan to make several other of the projects eventually, but for right now I'm going to attempt the ones that look the easiest. I think this is for someone who has been sewing a while, not a beginner.

Burningham rules! His illustration style is thoroughly original and his stories are top notch. Never hesitate to get any of his books.

I have such fond memories of this book! My daughter, who is now 22 years old and a student in vet school, loved this book as a child. We probably brought it home from the library every other visit. I'm buying it for her now - she will be so pleased to see it again.

The illustrations are beautiful and the humor is gentle; the list probably helps with developing a child's memory and the animals that accost him on his way home are not remotely scary. It's an excellent book for your permanent library!

I have a three year old, and also work as a speech language pathologist with elementary school children. I know children frequently pick up and repeat what they hear not just in movies, but in stories. While the illustrations are eye-catching in the book I was very weary of the language. For example, "Give me these bananas or I'll pull your hair." "Give me those apples or I'll punch you." ANother line is "I'll squash you against the fence.", "I'll butt you against the fence.", or "Ill whack you with my trunk." After one read through, I quickly sent this book back to the libraray--Didn't want my daughter repeating back any of those lines!!

Pamela Anderson is a huge part of what PETA does. Not only does she actively voice against animal cruelty, she is a major campaigner against companies that promote animal testing, which may leave you with a cabinet full of products where animals have suffered as a result. Shopping Guide for Caring Consumers is an easy to use guide that covers all household items from clothing and personal care to cleaning and health/beauty. And for those who are a little more Internet saavy, an easy to use online store guide can be found at www.caringconsumer.com. Animals were not meant to be used as test subjects for your lastest shampoo or mascara. Reading this guide will leave you with the power of knowledge, which will make you the ultimate consumer.

And the attitude - snobby, awful. I'd suggest the Luxe guides, which not only tell you where to shop but also suggest places to eat, to drink, etc.

I don't like to shop, but I loved this book. In my experience it's accurate and on-target for Beijing, HK and Hanoi (which is included). It's full of practical information (consider going to Asia via Tel Aviv on El Al -- who knew?) and points out the distinctions betweeen confusing names e.g. Shanghai Museum and Shanghai Art Museum, two different places.

The information on visas, travel and shipping is sensible and matches my experiences in Asia.

The writing style is punchy and entertaining (e.g. "Rental cars: You have to be kidding, right?") so like all the best travel books, it's worth reading even if you never leave home.
