I saw this book at the library years ago and found it very helpful, so when I saw it on Amazon, I purchased it. It is out of print and some of the information is a little dated (turkey is no longer 69 cents per pound), but it is excellent at teaching about the different cuts of meat and how to recognize which are tough and which are tender. It explains how to cook the cuts of meat and which ones are a good bargain and which cost too much money for what you get. Also it tells how to cut up chicken and turkeys. I recommend it very much if you a a meat eater.

I have owned this book for about 20 years and wouldn't do without it! Mr. Ellis presents superb descriptions of the cuts of meats, methods for boning, ways to ensure that one gets the tenderest slice of a specific cut based on anatomy and many hints about saving money. I showed it to my butcher, and he got one for himself. My daughter was just married, and I am now ordering her a copy. I can't say enough good about this book.

What part of the animal does the London Broil come from? Anyone who has been frustrated trying to decipher the marketing nomenclature of the meat industry will appreciate Merle's straightforward and frank explanations. Hailing from the U.S. heartland and practicing his trade in California, Merle shows himself to be a knowledgable butcher with a knack for writing in a conversational style. The writing is puncuated by clear line drawings of carcasses and cuts that aid the exposition, as well as other drawings that bring out the romance of meat. A few B/W photographs illustrate the difference between Prime and other US Grades of meat. I've looked for similar information in many other cookbooks without success. My only criticism is that the text does not refer directly to figures. Rather they are dropped on the page and one must guess which figure relates to what part of the text.

I am sure that I am not the only one who had a problem after migrating here with the language barrier and had a hard time finding their favorite grocery product in a supermarket or any food store. And it is impossible to carry around a regular dictionary when shopping-it will take you forever to find a translation of what you are looking for.... With this incredible book the author has made it soo easy to find any item you wish for but don't know the translation!!!! It is a wonderful book that is not only a dictionary, but it has also a great learning material about food and other products, and I am going to recomend it to everyone i know!!! Thank you for thinking of us-immigrants!!!

Finally- somebody did it!!!!!!!!!

This is a wonderful reference guide for all Gluten challenged eaters! It can be really difficult and discouraging to try to figure out what is alright and isn't alright when you are on a gluten restricted diet! Thanks so much for offering this item.

My only unhappiness comes from the high price tag. I think $14.95 is about what it should be. But It is really a one of a kind helper. The size is great for taking along to the store with you also.

I gave this book five stars bc I have not found another book like it. It is a great resource if you are in the supermarket and not sure if something is gluten free. This book lists only the products that are gluten free. It is small enough to fit in a large purse.

The only thing I am not happy with is the organization. It is easy to use. I just would have organized it differently. For example, instead of listing all of the Tylenol products together it is broken down by sleeping aids (for Tylenol PM) and cough/congestion section (for those Tylenol products), etc... I also feel like there are products missing that are gluten free, so I do not completely rely on this book. One example is Starbucks. Certain Starbucks products are gluten free but this book makes no mention of them in the coffee section.

Best Gluten Free product reference I've used!

My 3 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with Celiac and this book is one of the best items we've purchased to use as a reference. I just ordered a second one to give to my daycare provider and may end up ordering more for relatives. I have used other guides, and this one is BY FAR the easiest to use.

Shop for happiness, discover wisdom

Review Date: 2004-12-11
What begins as an ordinary day at a new shopping mall turns into a delightfully fun, poignantly profound adventure in the novel "Gone Shopping! An Odyssey of Discovery" by Doc Carson.

The heart of this mystery is about finding happiness. As the shopper works his way through the odd stores on each level of this surreal five-level mall he begins to understand that happiness isn't something we stumble upon, it's something we create by recognizing the five ingredients of happiness-each one symbolized by a floor of the mall.

All the clues are there but solving the riddle requires the shopper to give it some thought - not just daydreaming thought, but focused, puzzle-solving thought. On the top floor the shopper meets a plucky young woman artist and a sagacious old man and together in a provocative dialogue they grapple with the hard questions of life: why so many people only make it to the third or fourth floor of the happiness pyramid and why so many take the stairs when there are elevators. Carson, in his subtle symbolism, has perceptively hidden the elevators in the back of bookstores. Excellent books like this help lift us to the apex of happiness without having to keep taking the stairs in life.

You can experience a fun adventure with one mans strange life altering odyssey at the five-level KT mall. The riveting, thought-provoking novel says that our "work blocks" build our observable identity, but what is really inside? The story propels us to the real center of the KT mall and inside our own mind, illustrating that each level represents one essential ingredient for happiness. A backhoe zooms by on one level and perhaps the driver should be shouting, "books like "Gone Shopping!" are great, life is too short, read fast!"

A Worthwhile Addition To One's Personal Library

Gone Shopping! Is one of those rare books that you pick up that you can say is truly life-changing. According to Carson, the author, when we search for happiness we are actually taking a shopping trip to a special place called "the KT Mall." The KT Mall has five levels to it, the first covers the essentials of food, clothing and shelter. The second is security and peace of mind. The third level fulfills our need to affiliate with others. The fourth level deals with our self-esteem. But it's at the fifth level, where we fulfill our deepest personal needs. Carson takes you on this imaginative "shopping" trip where you begin to unravel, layer by layer secrets of human nature that keep many of us from ever really experiencing true happiness. This book weaves a tapestry of ideas that are worth reading more than once. My congratulations to Carson on a beautiful book!

Gone Shopping!: An Odyssey Of Discovery is a sublimely surreal novel of an ordinary man drawn into a supernaturally extraordinary shopping mall. Reality begins to bend at the edges when he encounters a bus station on the third floor, and the further he ventures, the more mysteries both internal and external are revealed - and beneath all the bizarre whimsy, he must ask himself deep inside what the true meaning of happiness is. An existential exploration as well as a rollicking fun read, especially for those who understand the true passion of shopping 'til you drop.

I bought this book because my Great Uncle "Ian Orlando Macbeth" was mentioned and a picture of him was inside. He was a Greenwich Village Artist who painted murals throughout the Village's restaurants and was in private art exhibits. He also painted many of the blacklight posters we all knew and loved in the 1960's and 70's.

The book shows lots of photos and stories of the characters who strolled the streets and made Greenwich Village what we all know and love of the place. Good read.

This book provides what all of us crave, especially when we venture out in New York City -- an attentive and authoritative guide. It whets your zest for the great New York chase to find the best, and to know its inside story . . . "great pastries, freshly ground sausages, lovingly handled and well-made cheeses . . ." Hungry yet? Intriguing recipes (for swordfish agliata, e.g.) spice the tour of Italian food emporia and restaurants, specialty purveyors, pasta makers and bakers. The writing is as sharp and delicious as its subject.

Get Stuffed, Italian-Style

Review Date: 2001-11-12
Readers in a hurry to plunge into the best of Italian food needn't waste much time with this review--just order the damned thing. The price is low, the quality's high and the author, Jack Robertiello, has had a long career in the journalism of food and wine. He knows his stuff.

His subject is the Italian food of New York City, which means--with just a few exceptions--the best in this country, even this hemisphere (if you've ever tried Argentine or Chilean Italian cooking, you know what I mean). He divides New York City, wisely into several areas for the reader's convenience. First there is Manhattan, which is subdivided into neighborhoods also, thus putting the best and the most on display, conveniently formatted so it's easy to find out opening hours and days and time, which credit cards are or are not accepted, and so on. Information at your fingertips is the rule here. Then you come to the meat of each review, which ain't chopped liver. No snappy one-liners here, no "witty" and quick dismissals: the author actually discusses each establishment at a length that convinces you he's seriously studied it. Robertiello does have a sense of humor--he just doesn't use cheap laughs as a cover for shallowness.

From Manhattan he goes on to Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx, all of which have jewels that are missed by diners--and critics--who are afraid to cross the river. The only borough he's missed, it seems, is Staten Island, where there is a Sicilian vasteddi shack he needs to know about.

Restaurants are the main dish in this guide but far from the only one. There are also bakeries (some for pastry, some for bread), cafes, pizzerias, snackeries, food stores, butcher shops and joints. (A joint is a raffish sort of place whose charm usually escapes your friends, who think it's a dump.) He rates some on their overall cooking and others on the basis of specialties, which is important to folks who are, for example, eternally searching for the Best Pizza. He even has a 'best restaurant with music.' Such a place is normally to be shunned but the wordly-wise Robertiello knows full well that it can be a life-saver when you need to treat the in-laws to a memorable evening while ignoring them at the same time. A Top Ten list of Italian restaurants is provided but hardly necessary because the level of Italian food in the city is quite high. But his short courses on wine, pasta, olive oil and cheese will be of great help to neophytes.

Civilized men can disagree, and I have to quibble over his estimates (too high) of Bruno Ravioli and Manganaro's Food. Maybe that's because I make ravioli myself and life almost nextdoor to Manganaro's. Neither am I convinced that coal cooks pizza better than wood. Those sre small matters: This book is the real deal.

I have been trying to be more environmentally aware for quite some time. A lot of the time I fall short, but I'm trying to set a better example for my children. This is a fun way to help them learn. We have been using our own shopping bags for a short time now but I think If my kids can bring their very own bag on our trips it will penetrate a bit deeper for them. This is an outstanding book with a great lesson for all of us!

Children learn by watching their parents and by your example, even when you are trying to teach them and even when you're not. And if you want your child to be more earth friendly or "Green", here is a clever way to start with this big board book that is perfect for little hands and also includes a nice shopping bag for your child.

This board book is about a young boy and how he is aware of that even he can do things that can help save his world one bag at a time. The book talks about how using and bringing your own shopping bag you are saving trees and reduce plastic bags in our dumps. The book comes with a very cute Tyvek reusable shopping bag that says I Love Earth by using the letter I , a red child's colored heart and globe just like the one shown on the cover.

Our family is trying to be more aware and have been recycling bottles, cans, using our own shopping bags and it's so cute to hear my daughter say " We're going to take than home and recycle it,.... right mom!" It's something we never thought about growing up, but now need to think about how we can make our world and homes "greener" and more environmentally friendlier not just for our children but for their children as well.
