He Mentions Wendell Berry as his friend and I was sold

Ok, so I'm a Wendell Berry fan. So is this guy which I didn't know before I bought the book. It's mostly stories of scoring great deals, a little lean on the how-to but it gets you in the right mindset. I'm into this method of acquiring things I don't need (that's why there's Ebay). It's simply addicting and makes for great storytelling. It's also not too simplistic like other books I've read on the subject.

This was not what we thought it would be, but it had other attributes that make it a good book. I was looking for more photos, more splash -- and was inititally disappointed. Then as I explored it (there are great photos) and realized the last half of the book gives the maker's marks and a history, even if brief, of SO MANY small and large companies -- we realized it is a find we will use again and again. A good reference book for dealers and designers; not a coffee table book

Combines math, map reading and geography all in one!

I've never seen a story about a "visit to the grocery store" like this one. It puts together a fun story about helping with a creative introduction to geography and map-reading and map-drawing plus grocery shopping skills and a bit of math. It gives children a close up look at functions of reading and writing that work in the real world. With lists, legends and maps, young readers get a chance to learn about these tools. See if you can figure out where the strawberries are! I would recommend it for a higher level reader than is indicated in the overview (6-9 years).

For a child learning to read
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-05
The story line in this book is cute and good for kids learning to read. It associates sounds with objects, scissors go snip, zippers go zip, bunnies go hip-hop, ect. It's also good because it only uses 57 different words in the book, so it's good for learning vocabulary and it has a vocab list in the beginning of the book. The reason I gave it a 4 was because the pictures are so-so. The drawings are filled in with different shades of blue water color. I'd say this book is defiantly for a child whose getting more into reading themselves, and not very much into just looking at the pictures or being read to. Cause all the objects in the pictures are all blue.

Good beginner's guide to shopping in Paris

Review Date: 2005-06-12
Shopping in Paris can be a good introductory guide to the basics of what was where in the City of Lights at the time the book was written. Because, as the authors indicated, fashions and fashionable neighborhoods are constantly shifting, it is hard to keep track of the latest developments. I liked the book as a good point of departure, especially for first time visitors with limited time and wishing to shop. Although I have visited Paris many times, it was an interesting read with useful tidbits.

A Good choice for your children.

Review Date: 1998-04-16
As this book is a novelized version of the film Jingle All the Way, the English would not be difficult and the presentation is humourous.

The content is somehow similar to the film and of course, this book is preferred to children rather than adults because of its simple English and story structure.

As a Father or Mother of your children, you would not want them to see novels which are violent or sex-related. Therefore, this book is your choice.

Every child has their own expectation to Santa Claus and maybe , they will like this simple-family-based story!

For me, this book is quite interesting and simple enough for non-English-speakers like me. The Father(Arnold) is cute and 'interesting'. Also, the description phrases are good and if you are not a native speaker of English, you will find this book a good introduction to begin your reading of English books! ^_^

Singapore Sling
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-05
Singapore is a shopping paradise. The nation's many modern world class shopping malls offer a rich cornucopia of goods replete with leading brand names. Sitting astride the crossroads of the Eastern and Western world Singapore has long been a station for trade and cultural flows. Since 1819 and the arrival of the British it has been a city of the mercantile age.

Goods and services are the life blood of the city and its well being and raison d'etre center on these; Singapore is after all the world's largest port in terms of shipping tonnage, or at least competes toe to toe with Hong Kong for that title.

Chua Beng Huat an academic at the National University of Singapore has brought together a selection of his essays on the consuming habits of Singaporeans. He shows some of the meaning that getting and showing possessions brings to Singaporean lives. He discusses food, clothing, the Singapore presence of the globally ubiquitous McDonald's, deals with uses of language (Singlish, Hokkien) and class, and local cinematic representations of Singaporean culture and society. He deals with the interactions of culture in Sinagpore and the influence of the Japan-Hong Kong-Taiwan-Korean-China axis on local youth culture. He helps show us how multiple layers and registers of cultural exchange play out in Singapore.

Not as informative for older infants, but still a good reference

I bought this book when my daughter was 8 months old. It has a lot of information for "pre-parenthood" and when your child is a little older and walking. It gives good information about restaurants, where to shop, good parks to visit, hair salons, and what accommodations are available for children (changing tables, kid's menu, etc.) I was hoping to see more things for older infants. I was a bit disappointed to see that IKEA was not included in the guide. It's probably one of the most baby and kid-friendly places I've been to. For the most part, I'm satsified with the book.(Perhaps it should be called a "kid guide" rather than a "baby guide." Nevertheless, I'm sure I will be using it when my daughter is a little bit older.

An introduction to menswear by the famed mens clothing designer. While it is obvious Mr. Flusser has a preference for the English Saile Row ideal, the sartorial knowledge dispensed from the book can be applied universally. Please bear in mind the book is about good taste & classical style, as oppose to fashion victimship.
