My son is 8 yrs old and loves this series of books. The reading is fairly easy and the stories short so it keeps his interest. We read them as bed time stories and they are perfect. We own several of this series and we like them all.

I personally, felt this book was a bit repitive with its main point in the story, but it is a fairly good book. It has its rough edges, but everything itself is good for a children's book.
This book is basically about a young Critter going with his grandfather on a day out to the city to go shopping. He ventures the vast unexplored areas while his grandfather tries to keep track of him as he wanders carelessly at times.

"Just Grandpa and Me" is a classic "Little Critter" story about Little Critter spending a day with his Grandpa. They travel on a train, buy a suit, go to the movies and more.

This book has simple and fun humor in Little Critter's cute retelling of the story. For example, he says he held Grandpa's hand so he wouldn't get lost, but he did. Luckily, he found him right away. The illustrations have lots of fun detail and perfectly match the story for visual interest.

A fun little story that anyone can find the humor in and enjoy.

I bought this book on school recommendation for talking about careers. Reading the summary of it and how the character shops in the market place, I didn't realize it was an ABC book. While it is beautifully illustrated, it only teaches the ABC's and not much else. This is mostly a picture book that kids and adults will enjoy. There's not enough reading to make it a bedtime book.

I am in agreement with the other reviewers who commented on the poor quality of this reproduction of what was a fabulously illustrated children's alphabet book with a lovely verse and the lesson about giving to tie it all together. However, I went ahead and bought the book for a baby gift and I was very disappointed in the overall faded appearance of the illustrations compared with the original award winning version. It was my children's favorite alphabet book; and the new version doesn't even come close to the original as far as quality of the illustrations, which is what picture books are all about, isn't it? They should really look into re-doing it again. I wouldn't recommend buying it if you have seen the original, there is no comparison.

I think the mark of a good guidebook is one that can tell you new things about your hometown. Retro Chic is a *great* guidebookbook. I purchased my copy at home in Seattle, and was pleased to see that my favorite retro sources were included -- as well as several new favorites I hadn't heard about before. The information on online resources is also quite helpful, and introduced me to a whole new way of shopping for unique resale fashions. I took Retro Chic with me on a business trip to Los Angeles last week, and was able to do some wonderfully affordable consignment shopping in a city that's completely foreign to me. What a fantastic resource!

This DOES NOT appear to be a book in which the authors were paid for reviewing particular stores. The information is well organized, up-to-date, and gives plenty of clues about the stores it reviews. Listings are honest and cover a wide variety of topics, ranging from price scales and credit cards accepted to the kind of merchandise available.

This book is a great resource for anyone with a retro fetish, and a no-hassle way for people new to the "scene" to find great resale outlets in their home town, on vacation, or online. I highly recommend Retro Chic and have bought copies as gifts for two friends who recently moved across country.

Best shopping guide yet!

This book is fabulous. Not only does it explore (and I use the word "explore" because these listings go way beyond mere addresses and phone numbers) about 500 vintage and contemporary designer resale stores all over the U.S., Canada and Online, but with the information offered on each store (what kind of merchandise is carried, price range, return policy, store owner's personal collections, description of the store itself, etc.), I feel much more confident about shopping for my newest passion, vintage clothing (almost like the authors are holding my hand and walking me thru). I also found the section that describes designers from the '20s to the '80s, along with an explanation of what was going on the world during those times, fascinating. The glossary of fashion terms is also helpful, and I loved the listings of vintage expos all over the U.S. The quotes from costume designers, and learning about vintage pieces worn by Hollywood celebrities, is definately a fun bonus. Bravo!

And what a helpful book when travelling to other cities in North America! Thank you!

I have to admit, the book got me looking at stray shopping carts in a whole new way! I find myself eying a collection of carts in the corner of a parking lot, considering their classification and wishing I had my camera with me.

I know, it's weird.

Not everyone is going to appreciate this book, or its deadpan, clinical nature. But if you have a weakness for the strange and/or absurd, this will be a great book to have on your coffee table when you have company over. Especially if you have a Petersen's Guide right next to it.

And the front half of a shopping cart mounted like a hunter's trophy over your fireplace.

I wonder if there's a market for those.

I designed shopping carts for 5 years. After I left that company, I saw this book. I bought it as a gift for my former boss who was the owner of the company that made shopping carts. I thought that he would get a kick out of it. Before I gave it to him, I decided to glance at a few pages and ended up reading through the whole book before I gave it to him. I sort of felt bad since the book is now officially used. He loved it anyway. It was interesting and it has inspired me to do something similar.

Buy this book, and leave it sitting on your coffee table...

When I first heard mention of this book (in The Believer magazine), I laughed out loud at the concept...

I laughed out loud when it showed up on my doorstep, too. The effort and thought put into the development of this silly book is tremendous. The result is an excellent play on the concept of field identification guides.

Whenever people see this book on my coffee table, it becomes a conversation piece. Funny, funny stuff.

As a certified straycartologist I applaud the effort to publicize this issue. I only hope we can convince those crumb bums in Washington that expanding our coverage to the rest of North America can only be achieved with copious federal spending.

Like the question burning in the loins of Lewis and Clark before us, what will the West reveal? My crotch is afire with this question: what will the West reveal about...ourselves? [For full effect, deliver that last word in a fervent whisper]

Review Date: 2008-03-25
I recently finished the new book, Shopping for Time: How to Do It All and NOT Be Overwhelmed, by Carolyn Mahaney, Nicole Whitacre, Kristin Chesemore, and Janelle Bradshaw. I've been reading their blog for a few years, and though I often find myself relating more specifically to the writing and experiences of one of the ladies more than the others, I love the unique styles, personalities, and perspectives of each one. They are daughters, sisters, (pastor's) wives, and mothers.... So, when I heard about this book, I was excited to read it, and learn from their combined wisdom and experience.

Regardless of the season in which you find yourself (single, newly married, mommyhood, empty nest, widowhood), these ladies realize that each one holds its own special challenges, and is full of demands on our time and energy. And, they understand that life is busy. But, they are able to offer wisdom and guidance through the overwhelming busyness because they view these demands (the real and the self-imposed) through the lens of Scripture. They start out by saying, "We can accomplish everything that God has ordained for us to do in this life....And we can do it in a peaceful, joyful manner and get sufficient rest besides." (pg. 13)

When I first got this book, I showed it to a friend. She looked a little skeptical as she read the title..."How to do it all? I don't know about that." Probably anticipating this reaction, the authors say, "These tips are not our attempt at Christian-coated time management principles. Rather they are biblical, life-tested practices we trust will encourage and assist you to bring glory to the Savior through every season of your life." (pg. 26) Using biblical principles as their foundation, alongside the wisdom of their individual experiences, they offer 5 tips to help women apply the words of Ephesians 5:15-16, "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil."

Rise Early: The subtitle of this chapter is "Joining the 5 a.m. Club." My first thought when I read that was, "Seriously?!" But, as I read, I became convinced. They offer this disclaimer, "the point of this chapter is not that really godly women get up at 5 a.m. Nowhere in the Bible will you find such a principle. Therefore, nowhere in this book do you we make that claim." (pg. 28). They also allow for the fact that "early" will look different for everyone. So, if 5 a.m. is not biblical, then why this chapter? "Hands down, the most important reason to rise early is to make meeting with God a priority. Secondarily, however, this practice has great potential to serve your family." (pg. 34) Rising early, whatever that may mean, allows us to give proper time and attention to our most important priorities - our relationship with God, and our relationship and service to our families.

Sit Still: This is the most important chapter in this book, and one of the best I read on the topic of personal devotions, or quiet times. Understanding that "we're doers, not sitters, by nature. We awake each morning, our minds whirling with all we want to accomplish that day. We bound off to complete these urgent tasks. But we must sit before we do. In order to effectively shop for time, we must first sit - sit at Jesus' feet." (pg. 40) We are encouraged to meet with the Lord, regularly, and consistently, in order to obtain guidance, wisdom, and peace from His Word for all that we must accomplish. Yes, life is busy. But, before anyone begins to think that their particular circumstance merits excuse in this area, the authors offer this admonition, "Please don't assume that because you're a mom with young children, it's fine for you to meet with God sporadically. All of us...need to choose the best portion along with Mary...." (pg. 45)

Sit and Plan: This chapter addresses the necessity of being careful how we walk (Eph. 5:15), by taking time out, and getting away, to prayerfully evaluate, and assess our priorities. "If we simply allow each new season to come along without charting a course, we could easily be sidetracked by urgent yet unimportant activities. We could wear ourselves out repeating the same mistakes and dealing with the same problems over and over. And we could potentially miss the truly significant opportunities each season has to offer." (pg. 52) They offer ideas for a personal retreat in order to plan for better effectiveness in areas that may be lacking, or needing improvement. While getting away may seem like the last thing an already-too-long to-do list will allow, "The pressures of life are, in fact, the very reason we need to sit and plan. (pg. 63)

Consider People: God's Word clearly shows us that, when it comes to relationships, our most important are those with our Lord, and our families. Because these ladies have dealt with these (important) relationships in other books (and on their blog!), this chapter deals specifically with friendships - both the kind that must be cultivated and maintained, as well as those that may need to be reevaluated, and possibly removed from our lives. They offer help in evaluating our current list of friends in light of Scripture.
- Do we have friends who will sharpen and mentor us? We should.
- Do we regularly reach out to those in need of friendship, or salvation? Or, would we rather stick with the familiar, even if that means making unwise choices in where, and with whom, we spend our time?
"We must prayerfully evaluate our relational priorities in the light of God's priorities." (pg. 69)

Plan to Depend: "By consulting this tip, we can make out good intentions a reality, avoid a solution-dispensing lifestyle, and avail ourselves of God's grace each and every day." (pg. 80) In this chapter, the authors suggest (or, rather, "highly recommend") developing a daily planning system. You will see as they share their personal planning styles, they are not suggesting a one-size-fits-all system. But, you may find one that you can closely relate to, and use to inspire your own system. "While a daily planning system and smart planning will enable us to make the best use of the time in the ordinary course of daily living, we know life doesn't always conform to our plans...So what do we do when life messes with our plans?" (pg. 85) Whether interruptions, busyness, trials, or just the ordinary routine of everyday life, we need to depend on God each and every moment - realizing that we are completely unable to handle even the most routine tasks apart from God's help and strength.

While some of their tips might seem a bit overwhelming (especially when you seriously consider "Joining the 5 AM Club"!!), they really are far from it. Each one offers biblical principles, personal experience, encouragement, and a welcome sense of humor, as these godly women help their readers understand the need for implementing biblical principles into the busyness of our everyday lives. They close with this reminder from Matthew Henry,

"It ought to be the business of every day to prepare for our last day." (pg. 94)

I have so enjoyed this book... I have been a blog watcher of the Mahaney Ladies off and on for the past few years and I enjoy their open honest bibilical assessments. Sometimes they are hard to swallow (in my own sinfulness) but through prayer God has used many of their encouragements to convict and lead me to change. I just finished going through this book with the ladies from my church in our Titus 2 Tuesday meetings. What a time of challenging and practical application! I am excited to be reenvisioned to use the time God has given me... I whole heartedly endorse this book!

"There is no such thing as simply a busy month or a busy year. It's a busy life, pure and simple...[But] we can actually do all that God has called us to do" (p. 13).

Sound far-fetched? Absolutely it does - it did to me! I've read stacks of books, just trying to learn what my schedule should look like, what my to-do list should look like...and on and on. Shopping For Time has been one of the simplest, most concise, and clearest helps in this process. "We wouldn't dream of going to the grocery store without a shopping list, or buying a car without haggling over the sticker price, or purchasing new shoes without checking the price tag, but we throw away our time as if we had an endless supply" (17).

In a sweet, conversational style, the Mahaney girls paint with appropriately broad strokes a picture of a life that is joyfully submitted to God's to-do list. This short (under 100 pages) book clearly, helpfully, and gently offers five tips on how to "shop for time," and it recognizes some things that many other time management or "Godly woman" books barely touch on or miss altogether:

The authors explain that we need to rise early (remember, flexibility!), sit at Jesus' feet, plan, consider the spheres in which God has placed us, and humbly recognize our dependence on God to be productive. The main thing this book has going for it is flexibility. What's required to act wisely will look different across the spectrum of women who're reading the book. What works for one won't work for all in exactly the same way. There are different seasons in each life, and application of these principles will look different during each one. Managing time wisely for the glory of God isn't something that can be done haphazardly. Your effort will depend on how complicated your life is, but there will be effort. Motivated rightly, though, our lives can be fruitful and joyful expressions of our love for the Savior and delight in serving Him.

"In the end, our highest goal each day is not flawless execution of our plans or increased productivity. It's our relationship with God, walking in dependence upon Him throughout the day. ...This book will help you become a wise shopper of time in every season of your life, so when you pass from time into eternity, you can know the intense and indescribable joy of our Savior's pleasure and commendation" (90, 94).

Carolyn Mahaney is one of my favorite authors. What I enjoy so much about her books is how consistently loyal she is to the Biblical text and how personal and practical she responds to those passages in her writing. Her two other books-Feminine Appeal, a book about Titus 2 and Girl Talk, a book for moms and daughters about Biblical womanhood-have been instrumental in my personal growth and ministry.

So, when I saw this book pop up on my Amazon suggested products page I was excited, especially because Caroyln wrote it with her three grown daughters who all contribute to the GirlTalk blog. I didn't want to even waste time waiting for it to come in the mail so that same week I visited the local Christian bookstore and bought it and after reading this review, I hope that is what you will do too!

Shopping for Time helped me think through my days and how I spend my time and I easily saw how I need to readjust a few priorities, step-it-up in some areas and completely overhaul others. I know that I don't always manage the time God has given me with the intensity and purpose that I ought to, so as I read this book I began to see that even though I thought, "I'm doing my best" managing my time, I really wasn't.

What I enjoyed most about this book were the five practical tips to help me evaluate and accomplish the things that God has called me to do as a Christian woman. Too often we are harried, frazzled and overwhelmed as we run around trying to get done all that we think we need to do each day. This book is not a "system" or 5-step plan to life success. It is simply the disciplines the Mahaney women have exercised over the years that have greatly maximized their usefulness for the Lord. Here is a glimpse at the 5 Time-Saving-Tips:

Tip #1-Rise early, they propose that you join the "5 AM Club" to reap benefits both for your spiritual life and the good of your family.

Tip #2-Sitting at Jesus' Feet, making reading and studying God's Word, prayer and meditation top priority.

Tip #3-Taking a Personal Retreat, a time to study God's Word, read pertinent books to where you are in life, devise solutions to some of our problem areas and make goals and plans that are thought out and Biblical for the upcoming months.

Tip #4-Consider People by evaluating relationships carefully. Do your friends sharpen you? Do you have a mentor and are you a mentor to someone? Are you reaching out to others by being a friend? Are you evangelizing those who need salvation?

Tip #5-Plan to Depend: being productive in daily life. One thing in this chapter that has really helped me is what they call the "15:4 rule." Fifteen minutes of planning in the morning, saves four hours of your day. When I read this chapter I started doing this the next morning and have found each day to be so productive because I wasn't wasting time trying to nail down what I needed to do next.

I hope reading these five ideas that you have some ideas about how you may need to change your schedule tomorrow! This book is simple, easy-to read and short, only 94 pages! What made this book so helpful is that it's not about teaching us how to perfectly execute our daily plans, but to make sure our heart is wholly God's, focused on Him and His priorities, relying on Him to accomplish each task and being intentional about living every day for His glory!

I didn't realize how much I fell into this category until I read this book. I was a little surprised that there were quite a few references to religion in this book, but it by no means was offensive or trying to convert anyone. I am reading it in conjunction with Overcoming Overspending, A Winning Plan For Spenders And Their Partners, and for the first time in years, my bank account is not in the red. Motivating, inspiring. A real wake up call for women who have been raised to be shoppers.

As a Christian woman, I was hoping this book would really help with my problem of overspending, but it didn't! I don't even plan to finish reading the last 60 pages of the book. I'm looking for a book that goes more into depth on how to solve the problem, and I personally don't believe 12 step programs are the key to solving shopping addictions. Had I known this book so heavily relied on testimonies, I would not have purchased it.

He does exactly what I would have done at his age, what I was told to do - he finds somebody in a store, eats a snack, and has his mother paged.

Perfectly sensible, and everybody gets found.

Absolutely the worst ever children's book from a safety viewpoint!!

I'm glad to see that this book no longer appears to be in print new. Little Critter books have often been favorites of my kids, but this one actually found its way to the trash (something that makes me cringe)because of the HORRENDOUS message it gives about getting separated from your parent in a store. First, Little Critter doesn't stay in the store that he loses his mom in. He doesn't ask another mom to help, which is the first thing a lost child should do. Next, instead of staying with the female clerk of the toy store while they search for his mom, he leaves ALONE with a security guard and goes ALONE to a security office with this guard. All of these things are absolutely contrary to any responsible advice that a child safety expert would give, and could put the child in much more danger. Please do not buy this book, and instead buy one of the many quality little critter books after familiarizing yourself with them. This book will teach your child to be UNSAFE in a lost situation.

That's how I'd describe this book in the "Little Critter" series, but then again, that's how I'd describe a lot of them.

This book is about Little Critter and his family visiting a shopping mall. There's a "jillion" critters there and Little Critter's Mom encourages him to stay close. But despite his best efforts, Little Critter's Mom gets lots. :D Fortunately, Little Critter knows just what to do and once they've read this book, kids will too.

The power of this book has already been attested to, so there's not really much more I can say about that. This is a story that kids can remember and if they ever get lost, they'll know just what to do.

I think the book is very good. I liked reading it. The book gave a lot of information about not getting lost and what to do if you get lost. If you are ever lost in a mall you need to go to an adult and tell them that you are lost or that your mom is lost. I also like the pictures that are in the book. The pictures helped to make the book interesting

I highly recommend this book! We recently went to a very crowded water park where we got separated from our 4 year old son. We found him, or I should say he found us, about 10 minutes later. He went up to a lifeguard and told them he couldn't find his mommy, then proceeded to give them my name and his name. When we asked him how he knew what to do, he said, it was because of the "Just Lost!" book and what we had talked about if he got lost. This book gives you a great opportunity to discuss a plan with your child if they should, heaven forbid, ever get lost.

I love these books. They are the most convenient, easy to use cookbooks I have ever run across. Each week, they give you a varying menu of dinners for 6 days. The first page for each week's section is a shopping list (YEAH - EASY). I take the book with me to the store, buy what I don't have and cook an easy to prepare meal each evening. My picky son usually likes the recipes, too. I own 3 of these cookbooks. Most of the recipes have been really good, although a very few just don't work. Anyway, these are great cookbooks. I recommend them to everyone.

This is the third of Leanne's books I've bought. While I haven't had time to try very many of the recipes in this particular book, this version of "Saving Dinner" follows the formula of the other two I have, "Saving Dinner" and "Saving Dinner the Low-Carb Way." My family eats at home almost every night, but I'm not a very adventurous cook. So having someone tell me what to cook, what to buy, how to cook it, and what to serve with it, suits me great. On the whole, the recipes are easy and made with easily-found ingredients. Some are really wonderful, some we don't care for much, but most are good, satisfying meals. We just became vegetarians about 6 months ago, and so had to re-think our whole way of planning meals. This has been a God-send!

I have wanted for a long time to receive instruction on vegetarian cooking. I have been vegetarian since 1989. The food I would make for myself wouldn't always be so pleasing or appetizing to serve to others, and the diet revolved around the same few family friendly options. I have read other vegetarian cookbooks, however, I was daunted by the long lists of ingredients with items that I wouldn't normally buy (because we couldn't use them up before they spoil, or are too expensive), or couldn't find. I first heard about Leanne Ely from the book by the FlyLady, Martha Cilley (whose "Sink Reflections" I really enjoy). I am excited again about lunch and supper, new tastes to try. It is refreshing to be able to produce good food, pretty and bright and nutritious. I used to shop for whatever we were in the mood for and come home, and it would still seem like we really didn't have much to eat. Now, I have picked a week's worth of recipes, made a list of ingredients, and it is so refreshing to know that everything in the cart will add up to something: a good meal. The pleasure of preparing a colorful meal is dampening the urge to snack before meals, and the dishes are fulfilling. Junk food also pales when compared to fresh, healthy food on the plate, hand made.

I really like Leanne Ely and I had hoped "Saving Dinner the Vegetarian Way" would be wonderful. Unfortunately I can't say that it is. We have cooked three weeks of meals now. Most of the recipes are just all right and two or three a week are awful. Leanne seems to have grabbed recipes at random, replaced the meat with tofu or black beans, and then called it vegetarian. Many of the recipes are basically flavorless while a few are overly spicy or sour. Some of the ingredients lists are off, too.

I do like cooking in season and I appreciate that Leanne includes seasonal vegetables. I also like that she uses a wide variety of vegetables that most Americans aren't exposed to.

Unfortunately I will not be using this book anymore. I can't afford to keep ordering pizza when yet another recipe fails.

I really liked this book because it was adventures. Sometimes it was like one minute it was whats going to happen next and the other times it relaxed. I recomend this book for people who likes adventures. My favorite part was when the main character and the new kid ran away to the shopping mall and durring the night the suciritygard came to where they were hidding with his cat.The cat came under the bed she was hidding under and started to howl. she got really scard but then the grad just walked away it was really exciting!!! I would tell you about the ending... But i would spoil it. So you will go have to read it for your self. I hope you like this book when you read it. not everyone will like it but I thought it was a really good book!!!!!

I had a project on Richard Peck and I had to read at least 750 pages of his books. When I first checked out this book I thought it was gonna be totally stupid! Come on, just look at the title and cover page! After reading a little of this book I got hooked! It was totally awesome, very imaginative, and creative, while some of the reasons why Theresa and Barnie left really hit home with alot of things most of us kids are going through. This was an amazing book and I would recomend it and any other book written by Mr.Peck!

Read it 25 years ago- still own my copy.

Read this book in 1979 or 1980, as a pre-teen, and it is one of the few books still on my shelf from that long ago. Peck's writing is imaginative and vivid, and this book captured my attention. The secret world of a shopping mall at night after the lights are out! I would recommend it to any young person, male or female.

Secrets of the Shopping Mall by Richard Peck is a very interesting and enjoyable book. Two middle school aged children, Barnie and Teresa, run away from home to escape the King Kobra gang. After being defeated in a `fight' the gang was out for revenge and would surely kill Barnie and Teresa if they found them. With only two dollars each, the two hop on a bus and head to Paradise Park. But this place was no paradise instead it was a huge shopping mall.
Barnie was an intelligent kid and had moved up to the eighth grade from the seventh, He helped Teresa and himself live a somewhat comfortable life, hiding out in the shopping mall until one strange and eventful night. They are captured by store manikins that have a whole hidden world that comes alive after store hours end. The leader of the manikins, Barbie, says they will have a trial to determine if Barnie and Teresa are Mouth Breathers (manikins mortal enemies). If found guilty the price could be there lives. Will Teresa and Barnie get out of the shopping mall with their lives? Read the book and find out the answer. Any and all Richard Peck fans will love this book although I would recommend it to readers of all genres and authors.

This is one of those books I stumbled across at 11 years old, read in an afternoon, and was haunted by to this day.Every kid at that age wonders what goes on in the other world-the shopping mall late at night and ponders its potential as a refuge from parents, school, or in this case a gang of hoodlums. The story flows along smoothly with plenty of small suprises but no horrible shocks to keep one awake at night. I certainly recommend it as a stepping stone-kids that read this will likely go on to enjoy Mannequin with Andrew McCarthy, and come full circle by watching Dawn of the Dead. Of note: there is a similar episode of the Twilight Zone where a young woman is shopping in a high end department store. She feels watched, hears her name whispered,(MAAAARRSHAAA...) and winds up on a floor not offered by the elevator buttons. She comes to find out that all the mannequins are "alive" and take turns going out for one month to see the real world. She has been long overdue- it's another Dummy's (sorry, I can't resist)-turn! Anyhow, the book spooked me then and still has me wondering...

I found this book easy to use (especially for an Internet beginner like me). I bought it last week and am using it as a reference guide (not sure it would be much fun as a straight read) to start my holiday shopping online. It's fun to be part of my children's generation using this technology (and they can't believe how much I know now because of the help this book provides :)

Gomez has always provided a wealth of information online about e-commerce, and the quality of their sites. Here they provide a more indepth look at these sites for those who still like their information printed on paper.

I found the book provided me with easy access to information about where to invest, bank, and buy online. As we try to wade through the overwhelming number of consumer sites online this is a must have.

I picked up a copy because I loved the job Gomez.com does rating web sites. I am a relative newcomer to the internet (about 6 months) and this book does a good job giving a general overview of different types of sites and some really helpful tips on how to shop and invest online. I highly recommend it.
