The purchase of the book was easy and its delivery was prompt, even with the Amazon offer of free but relatively delayed delivery.

This is the second book of John Ehlers, a well-established pioneer in cycles and trend analysis for the technical analysis of stock price behavior. It is for advanced analysis, and it is a sequel to his classic book of "Rocket Science for Traders". You do need a math aptitude and some programming experience to get the maximum benefit of both books. John also offers eratta and corrections for minor typos in the formulas as well at his Mesa website.

Those who find this book of interest might also check on John Bollinger's classic book "Bollinger on Bollinger Bands", Steve Achelis' book on "Technical Analysis from A to Z", Steve Nison's book on "Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques", and Martin Pring's "Technical Analysis Explained", Paul Murphy's "Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets", and "Technical Analysis of Stock Trends" by Edwards and MaGee. This is not a complete list, but a good start.

Remember that no single book offers the Holy Grail of investment. Stay objective to balancing your background, because investing mistakes can be the most expensive education you will ever have.

This is a book clear and very easy to read, for me as physics research, and to my development is very useful.

John Ehlers new book covers much of the same ground but goes beyond his previous book Rocket Science for Traders. Again the reader is given the explanations and theory for his indicators, smoothers and systems along with the Easy Language code for use in the Tradestation platform.

These indicators can be used as presented or can be easily adapted and combined with countless other indicators that a trader may currently be using. Certainly, the goal of any trader is to identify market tops or bottoms or at least to determine if markets are trending, behaving cyclically or entering a period of sideways or volatile movement. These indicators, alone or combined with others, can help one achieve that goal.

The reviewers of his previous book that had negative comments I believe, for the most part, missed the point entirely as it concerns John Ehlers subject matter and style. Hence, I am concerned that they will also make the same mistake when considering this book. Some believed the analysis was sophmoric while others were concerned with advanced theoretical questions concerning the mathematics presented. Since traders come from all backgrounds books like these need to be written to appeal to as many of them as possible. An electrical engineer will understand the concepts and why they might apply to equity and commodity markets and then can make any changes he/she sees fit with the code. Other readers that understand the problems with trading in trending vs non-trending markets can skip the DSP discussions and immediately use the indicators presented or use the code that determines cycle length to make their own indicators much more responsive to market conditions. Theoretical arguments aside, even the simple indictors included in this book take one way beyond the world of simple moving averages and stationary stochastics.

If nothing more, anyone burning the midnight oil searching for a way to beat the markets will be given endless, state-of-the-art ideas to keep him busy for a long time.

John Ehlers newest title is sure to make even the brightest of brain surgeons quiver for fear of closing the renal artery prior to completing the operation. Other reviewers may diss this author but his latest book truly reaches for the stars and makes it. The chapters while short, are to the point and exquisitely illustrate the concept being taught. If you are new to trading systems the shortness of the explanations may be too short but for experienced traders and developers of trading systems they are long enough.

Aspects of many indicators are reviewed with fresh insight added for several new systems not talked about in print before. Removing the lag is the traders dream. Many of the indicators shown do work although errata in the code does spoil some of the implementations given. Ehlers has provided for the keener updates on his website that corrects the mistakes, kudos here for doing the right thing.

Overall Ehlers has done it again and this book should be a staple in any traders library. As for the wannabees wanting all the answers and sure fire methods, choose brain surgery as your career option. No one said trading would be easy but Ehlers has given more toolsets that a successful trader can use in a concise to the point book.

I have been trading for nearly 10 years now and have spent countless amount of time and money on books, systems, software and must say this the best book I have come across. With little creativity one can easy adopt ideas from this book to come up with a profitable mechanical system.

the quality of the product was the very best. it also arrived when i expected it too. i needed it in a crunch time and it came through beautifully.

This is a fascinating book for folks interested in the international decolonization movement of the 50s and 60s, and its relation to the Black Power movement in the States. The Discourse is beautifully written and passionately argued. The interview helps clarify Cesaire and Senghor's concept of "Negritude" as an early form of Black pride, rather than racial essentialism. The essay introduction is worthwhile since it puts the book in relation to Cesaire's poetic work and the Surrealist movement in France, America, and the Antilles. It's unduly dismissive of Cesaire's Marxist politics, especially since it goes against the spirit of the interview appended at the end.

I read Cesaire's 'discours sur le colonialisme' in one afternoon at a coffe place and it was captivating in how intellectually he wrote, with tinges of attitude in the words. A lot of the things he wrote about I already knew from studying a lot about Africa before and what ethnocentricism vs. ethno relativism means when applying yourself and perceptions of other cultures. This book is as applicable in the 1950's as today, I found that America seems to be the new France and Britain, as far as imperialism goes.

This book has so many good points about how one must look at the non Occidental world. Whenever I hear people talking about Africa in a degrading way in that the continent needs the Western world to give it medicine, schools, etc . . .it infuriates me with the lack of research these people have done. Although one can't expect everyone to know, but they would at least get a glimpse if they read this. They would see that it is the fault of the Occidentaux which is why Africa is in the state it is now. Before Europeans went there, the people of this rich, great continent had their own cultures, laws, languages, writing, religions that worked very well for them. Because they were different than Europes ways, they were viewed as primitive and uncivilized, but you can't measure a civilization by the same standards of another, far different one. Just because they didn't write their history down, doesn't mean they didn't have it. They used oral tradition for this, which is just one example of the European's prejudice. If Europe never went there, these African civilizations very well could have flourished and become great as the passage of time went along.

Colonization has done it's damage, Cesaire talks about decolonizing our minds, I wonder how long that will take to accomplish? I would recommend this short read to anyone who wants to try to get out of their own cultural shell and think about the way the world is viewed from the viewpoint of others, even though this book is seriously outdated and seems like the author has never even been to Africa.

Frantz Fanon is a more compelling read though (even though he's a bit of a misogynist), try "black skin, white masks" or "l'an V de la revolution algerienne/a dying colonialism".

In Aimé Césaire's "Discourse on Colonialism," She very blatantly voices her opinion that a (European) civilization that is:

...incapable of solving the problems it creates is a decadent civilization. A civilization that chooses to close its eyes to the most crucial problems is a stricken civilization. [and finally] A civilization that uses its principles for trickery and deceit is a dying civilization. (31)

As well as applying for both Britain's presence in Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, and France's colonial presence in Africa and the Caribbean, this powerful statement could become an equation for the line drawn between one country's involvements with another.

For example, here is an unmistakable connection here to the US' involvement in Iraq. Are we as a nation decadent? Stricken? Dying? The over $155B spent in Iraq (...) instead of other national priorities. Cesaire's points are very relevant to the times as she brings further knowledge and past histories into the damage of Colonialism: "...at the present time the barbarism of Western Europe...being only surpassed...by the barbarism of the United States" (47).
She talks about the `gangrene' of impartiality, in regards to the French hearing stories that are disturbing and pornographic. "Colonization, I repeat, dehumanizes even the most civilized man" (Césaire 41). A theme prevalent in films such as Black Girl, Chocolat, and Xala. It is easy to be impartial when one is ignorant.

Discourse on Colonialism was a serious eye opener. Cesaire made me think about all of the horrible out comes colonialization produced. It was one of the best non-novel books I've read in years.

Anne Firth Murray has created a marvelous and engaging text for anyone who is teaching about women's health, global health issues, or just the issue of how social change happens. I have used this book in my own women's health advocacy course at Suffolk University, and the students all loved it. As someone who has given lectures in the area of global health and women, I found this book a tremendous contribution to understanding how poverty and gender inequity contribute to the starting line of the anne firth murray's prologue- "being born female is dangerous to your health." She takes you through the cycles of life,--birth, childhood, adolescence, midlife and aging and walks you through all the preferential demographic imbalances and injustices that can occur to vulnerable women. I will use this book often as a reference and an assigned mandatory reading for my classes in global health. I hope to meet the author one day soon and thank her.

Occasionally a truly inspiring work comes along. Anne Firth Murray's, From Outrage to Courage, Women Taking Action for Health and Justice is such a book. In spite of the rigorously documented grim state of women's health worldwide, this comprehensive book offers hope that things are changing in powerful ways. Readers will be inspired to contribute to the positive change being achieved by the multitude of organizations profiled on nearly every page. These women are doing something about the injustice.

Tracing the stages of life we all go through from birth to aging, each chapter is a powerful juxtaposition of outrage provoking description of where we are today with examples of the courage to confront it. Anyone in public policy, private philanthropy, or in just being more human will find this book helpful. I highly recommend it.

From Outrage to Courage: Women Taking Action for Health and Justice

Anne Firth Murray's lastest book, From Outrage to Courage, is a comprehensively researched work that examines critical issues of global health and justice concerning woman. The book reflects a lifetime of action and research by one of the world's leading activists in the area of health and women's rights, and is a clarion and inspriring call for action with its probative analysis and compelling presentation. I recommend this book highly.

"From Outrage to Courage" is a remarkable book that should be a must-read for all of us. Beautifully written and extremely well-researched, Anne Firth Murray takes you on a journey into the challenges and inequalities faced by women throughout our world. This book is filled with many important facts and figures, providing a specific context within which we can better understand the enormity of this situation. One of my favorite aspects of the book is the way in which Anne is able to weave in personal stories of women with whom she has met and spoken. These examples provide an identity and a face for the millions of women and girls living in oppressive, violent, and unequal situations.

It is impossible to read this book and not become emotionally invested. However, though much of the information is horrifying, the overall feel of "From Outrage to Courage" is that of hope and perseverance. Every chapter contains information about specific groups throughout the world that are working to combat the challenges discussed. You finish this book with the understanding that we can all do something to help, no matter how small or how large our gestures may seem.

I truly loved "From Outrage to Courage", and I will be sharing it with as many people as possible!

The role of the American army in the Pacific between the Spanish-American war and the Second World War is often forgotten. Most don't even know the American army ahd a role so far away from home. Indeed the army was small but the stakes were high. In the wake of the war with Spain in 1898 the U.S gained a number of small protectorates and colonies in the Phillipines and Samoa and elsewhere. Eventually this became part of a defense system, but it was not merely to defend against outsiders. The Army also had a role with the local people and creating institutions. Moreover it also had to fight insurgencies that took place in the Moro area of the Southern Phillipines where Muslim insurgents fought Americans. The insurgency goes on to this day. However at the time the likes of General Pershing were used to put down this uprising with the least possible loss in lives.

This fascinating and detailed book opens up a new history of the American army and its role in the Pacific.

Linn notes that the big question of WWII is, "why, with almost four decades to prepare, these (US Army) military forces proved unable to defend the nation's Pacific possessions against Japan." The author notes that the traditional approach has been to focus on events in the short-term prior to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and the Philippines, however his effort is to, "offer a somewhat longer perspective through a narrative history of the U.S. Army in Hawaii and the Philippines from 1902 to 1940....its task is not to delineate the road to Pearl Harbor, but to illuminate the numerous paths the army trod in its long search for a viable Pacific defense....For years it had foreseen both the threat and its own inability to ward it off." From a strategic perspective, this book does a good job of putting America's failure into context. It points out that although the surprise attack of 7 December 1941 was not detected, from a military capabilities standpoint there was little the Army could have done. Although I believe one needs to be careful with historical parallels, a student of strategy can see how political and economic considerations drive strategy. Indeed, a similar issue between today (2004) and then was the tension between what is required to hold ground when forces are deployed vs. the ability to deploy and sustain those same forces over a great deal of distance.

During the first forty years of the 20th Century the U.S. Army had the mission of protecting the Philippine and Hawaiian Islands from attack by the nation of Japan. Although Japan was not originally thought to be a threat, from the 1922 Naval Conference onward the army high command considered Japan as the only real threat in the Pacific. This book provides a unique and very good history of what came to be known and the U.S. Army of the Pacific.

The book provides a good deal of fascinating information on all aspects of the Pacific Army from the life of enlisted men to the strategic thinking that informed its planning. But perhaps the most interesting theme running through it is how the U.S. Army identified the Japanese threat to the U.S. Pacific Islands and sought to mitigate it.

Because of budget and manpower constraints imposed by congress, the U.S. Army in the period between the WWI and WWII was incapable of fighting any kind of war. Yet as this book shows that did not prevent the Army General Staff and the Department Staffs of the Philippines and Hawaii from developing often very well thought out strategies for the defense of the islands. In the case of the Philippines the Archipelago was first considered vital to U.S. interests in the Western Pacific and a keystone in U.S. strategy. Gradually this view changed and by the thirties, the Philippines were considered indefensible against Japan and a strategic liability. Army planners sought to minimize the U.S. military presence there. This same thinking made Hawaii and especially the Pearl Harbor naval base on Oahu the keystone of a defensive arc running from Alaska to Panama which was designed to protect the U.S. Pacific Frontier.

One thing that is clear from this book and that is that the Army General Staff and the Islands' Departmental Commands were quite accurate in their defining the potential threats posed by Japan and fairly realistic in planning defensive strategies against those threats. For example the army was only too aware that the elaborate harbor defense systems that defended Pearl Harbor and Manila Bay were obsolete almost from the day they were completed. Still army planners at both the General Staff and department level tried to develop effective defensive plans. The problem was, as this book states, that there was a tradition that developed early on that allowed department commands to override general staff planning and design their own defensive plans. Thus in 1941General Short of the Hawaiian Department defined the threat from Japan primarily in terms of sabotage while the General Staff correctly saw it as a threat from air attack.

Brian Linn believes that the American annexation of the Philippines damaged rather than helped the U.S. position in East Asia. Even before the outbreak of the Second World War, American military planners knew that the Philippines were extremely vulnerable to Japanese invasion but were relunctant to raise a native force that could also be a threat to the American Army. The security problems only became worse when before the attack on Pearl Harbor, MacArthur authorized the defence of the entire Philippines and not just the Bataan peninsular. As a result of America's fear of a native force to protect the Philippines and MacArthur's overly ambitious plans, the United State suffered a humiliating defeat to the Japanese in 1942. I would reccomend this book foy anyone who believes that a new American empire would enhance national security but has ignored the disasterous example of the American experience with the Philippines.

This is a splendid and pioneering study of the Army in the Pacific, a subject badly in need of more light that it has hitherto received. It brings the Pacific Army to life in a way that no one else had even attempted.

Like any book, however, it has its limitations, and as is usually true it is the ones that author was not aware of (at least at the time) and did not flag for our attention that we must take most care of. In this case the principal limitation lies in strategic view.

The Philippines, as the author makes clear, never had any intrinsic significance for the United States (or for the earlier colonial power, Spain, for that matter) -- no riches or resources to be reaped. The sole significance of the islands lay in their position. Initially, Americans had calculated (like the Spaniards before them) that possession of Manila would provide an important advantage in gaining the rewards of the rich China trade. Luzon and the rest of the islands simply came with the deal. Almost as soon as they had been seized, however, other events eroded Manila's importance in this role greatly. (Perhaps we should say "seeming importance," as there never were the prospects which had been envisioned in 1898.) Finding themselves in possession of a colony of little value, Americans not unnaturally felt reservations about spending large sums to garrison and defend it. Thus a purely nominal force was assigned to its defense, adequate only for internal security and the assertion of sovereignty. The oft-proclaimed "bastion" of the Philippines was in reality no more than a sentry post, bound to be overrun quickly in any serious assault. To invest in a real Philippine fortress or in mobile forces strong enough to quickly relieve it would involve an expense that few Americans could see as justified.

Distant events changed all that. By the late 1930s, of course, the propensity of Japan for aggressive military expansion was manifest, but that did not seem particularly threatening in itself, given that the economic resources of the country were so small relative to those of the U.S. But the outbreak of the European War in 1939, followed by the Nazi defeat of France and threat to Britain in 1940, heightened American security concerns vastly. Then in September, 1940, Japan joined the Axis Pact, making itself an ally of Germany. Japan had intended this to change American perceptions and it did that, but not in the way that had been hoped. Japan ceased to be a disagreeable nuisance in a distant place and instead clearly became a potential part of a serious threat, to be blocked if possible and crushed if necessary. Very suddenly, the importance of the Philippines' geographic position changed dramatically.

It is this transition that Prof. Linn misses in focusing on the local realities rather than the global strategic picture that dominated the awareness of Washington decision-makers in 1940-41. This broader reality is well presented in Waldo Heinrichs, "Pearl Harbor in a Global Context," in _Pearl Harbor Revisited_, edited by Robert W. Love, Jr. (London: Macmillan, 1995) (ISBN 0312095937), and in more extended fashion in the same author's _Threshold of War: Franklin D. Roosevelt and American Entry into World War II_, (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1988) (ISBN 0195061683). For the same issue from a different perspective see Gerhard L. Beginning with the Japanese occupation of Vietnam in July of 1941, thereby making manifest their determination to continue down the road of active alliance with Hitler, the U.S. began to rush all available military power to the Philippines, reserving only that which was essential to the security of America itself. But years of penuriousness and neglect had left the cupboard largely bare, and re-armament was yet to produce major material results. So the Philippine defenders, like the exposed sentry, became casualties of the brutally inexorable logic of war. Brian Linn's book provides a major and largely-overlooked piece of this picture, but is somewhat weak on the overall context.

There are also other sources which the interested reader may wish to consult in order to get a fuller picture. These include John J. Stephan, _Hawaii Under the Rising Sun: Japan's Plans for Conquest After Pearl Harbor_, (Honolulu: University of Hawai'i Press, 1984) (0824825500) and the article by Richard B. Meixsel, "Major General George Grunert, WPO-3, and the Philippine Army, 1940-1941," _Journal of Military History_, 59, No. 2 (Apr 1995): 303-24. Both offer insights not fully captured by Linn. In a more recent article, "Manuel L. Quezon, Douglas MacArthur, and the Significance of the Military Mission to the Philippine Commonwealth," _Pacific Historical Review_, 70, No. 2: 255-92, Meixsel introduces some new evidence regarding the events in the Philippines in the 1930s and uses it to call into question some of Linn's claims.

While I have focused on its limitations, I want to emphasize again that this is a very valuable and unique book, even taking them fully into account.

I owned the previous edition -- I bought this version because it promised new utilties -- intrusion detection, admin tools, ... for the most part, I have been happy. [The old edition provided the tools on a CD -- the new book has a companion Web site] -- trying to download the tools through my firewall can be challenging -- especially anything that has to do with viruses ...

That said, however, the new content is good.

The book has a definite slant towards Windows. But then ...

I have been building lots of Web clippings for the Palm environment. I needed a way to authenticate users. The book's discussion on Wireless protocols helped me implement a solution that works for the Palm and Web phones.

The book does a fair job of covering OS issues -- I recommend getting a book specific to an OS (such as Linux Exposed) if you need to protect a specific type of server.

The discussion on protecting ASP scripts was pretty good.

Over all -- worth the investment of money and time.

If there is a hacker-related book -- I have it ... compared to others, this book was easy to follow.

My Web site must support secure credit card transactions. The book's chapters on digital certificates, SSL, and e-commerce made the process almost cut and paste.

I also like and recommend Hacking Exposed.

Overall, this is a pretty good, general, beginner's book to network security.

For me, my main goal was to learn more about the OSI Model and how it relates to various security solutions I am investigating. The book does a pretty good job with the OSI Model and it explains pretty well the various technologies and techniques out there.

The fly in the ointment for this book is the fact that it has VERY little on wireless security. In fact, it only has one chapter and this one chapter dealt with all the different flavors of wireless technology. I was particularly interested in security solutions for wireless LANs and this book only had a page on WLANs.

This book did not mention WEP or 802.11b or any of the 802.11x flavors out there. I had to glance at the copyright date in order to make sure that it was published in 2002! I find this omission very strange but at the same time network security is network security.

I am going to stick with my four-star rating because it is a good general book but don't expect much depth.

On another note, does anyone else but me find it suspicious that this book got 3 positive reviews in the space of a week and then little else over the last few months? :-)

The message itself is invaluable. I'm so glad I read it. But she really needs a new editor and/or proof-reader. It's astonishing, some of the mistakes in the book. I don't mean mistakes about the facts themselves; rather, the mistakes that would easily be noticed by any sharp-eyed middle school English Grammar class student.

I opened this book with great anticipation, but with the expectation that I may not be able to understand everything I was about to read with respect to the content. Kyndra's unique and charming style has made this book easy to read, while extremely informative with explanations of circumstances, laws and situations an average person can absorb. Her personal account is eye-opening and intriguing, one that every American should take advantage to read! I am thankful that she has shared her story and I look forward to future publications of this very talented author.

After reading this book, I purchased several more copies. Every patriotic person I know and love will recieve a copy as a gift. Thanks to Rotunda for providing me an avenue to thank the many Americans who serve our country with honor.

Wow! I purchased several copies of this book, because I was a law school class mate of Kyndra. I opened up a copy, and didn't put it down until I finished it. Very impressive and so informative. Definitely an insider's real life experience, which is such a breath of fresh air, after only hearing about "Gitmo" from the twisted and often unreliable perspectives of the media. I truly hope Kyndra continues her writing, as I am already waiting for her next book Go Kyndra!!

This book is a HISTORICAL first hand account of an experience with the trials in Cuba. This book is easy to read and Kyndra allows a reader with little understanding of the world of a lawyer to understand what is happening. Extensively referrenced with supporting information. Pictures add to the compelling nature of the book. This story is hard to put down. I appreciate the true account of Kyndra's experiences.

This book is written objectively without a slant towards a specific product. Also, written for the inexperienced as well as the professional trader. It provided some real insights as to how trading is accomplished (in plain English).

The bing "WOW" was seeing how I was being penalized as long term investor in mutual funds because of the annual tax distribution. Also, the majority of funds do not beat the S&P500 index!! Why invest in them when these new investment resources are available?

Highly recommend this book to all levels of investors.

I have been in charge of some small companies IT departments over the years. Technology changes at the speed of light and it is very difficult to keep up with it. This book gives no nonsense information, checklists, etc about various topics in project management. I think the reason why they named it 'How to Cheat...' is because it is a single book containing all the information needed to understand what IT project management is all about. I especially like the sections on dealing on how to understand corporate and business strategies and how IT is supposed to support them. When you don't have the money to go to school, this is a great book to have!

After taking Project Management I, II and III, and reading the classics like Kerzner's _Project Management_, this book is a solid supplement. In addition to the "basics" it gives insights on dealing with people, organizations and requirements in straight manner format.

The grey box inserts give real life examples on the topics discussed. I found the section on "forming the team" to be of great value. The sections on "quality" and "diagraming the processes" are full of valuable suggestions.

This is most certainly a book of value and I'm glad to add it to my library.

Where other books cover IT project basics, How To Cheat At It Project Management goes a step further in showing project managers how to make sure an IT project is in line with company strategic objectives, and which will deliver the best results. The author continues by showing you how to put together a project team and how to assign roles and responsibilities to team members. Then, she shows you how to break the project down into manageable components so that you can not only plan the work, but you can develop a more realistic schedule and budget.

This most excellent book shows you how to align your IT projects to the company's strategic objectives. It also shows you how to determine which project will solve the right problem at the right time while still delivering high-quality results.

This is a solid work on traditional IT project management. I'm not really sure what the whole cheating thing is about. This is the basic IT project management book written in a text book style (questions at the end, checklists, etc.) There is information on politics, team management, managing and tracking implementation and more.

It's more holistic than most of the books I've read on this topic and I liked that. IT projects don't exist in a vacuum and understanding how to operate within the larger corporate framework is important.

The only issue I have with the book is that it's overly formatting. There are lots of graphics around the headers and sidebars and that gets old fast.

A friend shared this book with me on a recent trip to Maine, where I typically "escape" to re-capture the core of my being. As I read, I "listened" to the writer's charmingly sophisticated, yet simple straight talk that recalls
reminiscent ideals for the ears of today's world.

Rick Roberts skillfully contrasts our current realities with the romance of his nostalgic "Grandpa's" values that are echoed in his chosen idyllic lifestyle in Maine. Likewise, each of us has a voice to cast as a glistening pebble skimming the pond. Our collective energy will then radiate peacefully with infinite resonance. The world will see. The world will hear. The world will be touched.

Our future generations are only as great as the exemplary ideals and legacies we, as role models, hand our children. Not just for "Boomers," this book is a must for parents, teachers, and all responsible adults.

Richard Roberts timely book is a must read for everyone, not just the Boomer generation. Roberts heralds a wake-up call to look at what impact we can (and do) have on our world, now and for the future. Most importantly, he outlines what steps to take to make positive changes now. Whatever your politics or spiritual beliefs are you will find this book a fresh take on our world today. Run, don't walk to buy this book.

Someone has finally written the great American novel! Well, it's not exactly a novel...more like a cross between a Michael Moore script and an Andy Rooney commentary. Rick Roberts' book is a warm hearted, straight talkin' wake up call to baby boomers - this nation's biggest generation ever. We boomers gave birth to a Dream in the sixties; and now, he says, it's time to finish the job: it's time to start living that dream. All I can say is buy this book by the armloads and pass it out to all your friends. It's a rollicking, great read...and when you're done turning pages you can continue to use it as an alarm clock.

I couldn't put Rich Roberts' book down! No matter what your politics, religion, gender, or race, it'll hit a nerve in anyone who questions today's personal, professional, or political priorities. Each chapter is extremely relevant. Rich's 'baby boomer rantings' are insightful, well researched, and full of wonderful, though sardonic, humor. Starting with Chapter 1 I penciled "X's" next to my favorite passages only to find by the end of the book nearly every paragraph was "X'ed!"

What more can I say than this: I enjoyed the book so much that I bought 20 copies and gave them to my friends, who also say "it is a must read!"

Kasey Pipes does a tremendous job of bringing Eisenhower's previously scarcely commented on struggles with the changing climate of America's Civil Rights to light in a very genuine manner. The book is incredibly readable and very informative.

Pipes is able to present facts with a human touch that brings the reader into Eisenhower's inner circle, as if they were a fly on the wall in some of Ike's most pivotal and telling situations.

Ike's Final Battle

Mr. Pipes has written a thoroughly enjoyable and well written record of Dwight Eisenhower's approach to civil rights legislation and his exegesis of perspective in the civil rights arena. Pipes chronicles Eisenhower's internal struggles with desegregation of the military and government agencies and his fear that a revolutionary, rather than evolutionary, approach to liberty for all Americans could cause more harm than good. This is a positive revisionist history to some degree; clearly evidencing Ike's intent on aiding the plight of minorities in the US while battling the prejudices that he came of age accepting and being immersed in for the whole of his military career. Ike's slow methodical approach to all matters of civil rights is clearly on display, as was his approach to all difficult decision making. However, his unflinching adherence to the laws of our land clearly stand out. Desegregation is ordered in Little Rock, AR and local politicians refuse to accept the Supreme Court decision, Ike does not hesitate in the least. After exhausting all diplomatic efforts he clearly takes charge of the situation and sends in the 101st Airborne to aide with the enforcement of recently enacted laws. No regrets on Ike's part, no compromising his beliefs - the law is being broken and he immediately, without hesitation asserts control - in the process paving the way for desegregation enforcement to take hold throughout the land.

This is an extremely brisk read that you'll find difficult to get away from. No fluff, solid documentation and previously uncovered oral histories make this a treasure trove of new insight into Ike's personality and genuine concern over civil rights matters. Eisenhower was often derided for his lack of leadership on civil rights, an argument which merits legitimacy, however we're shown a different side in 'Final Battle' which show he was more progressive than many thought - in fact on some occasions, more progressive than the NAACP - then a truly dedicated organization and true standard bearer of civil rights advancement.

Definitely check this book out - it's worth the time and money!

Written by former Bush White House worker Kasey S. Pipes, Ike's Final Battle: the Road to Little Rock and the Challenge of Equality is the amazing and unlikely true story of how Dwight D. Eisenhower became a civil rights president. Chronicling the landmark desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, which forced a historical confrontation between state and federal authorities and set an engraved precedent that the federal government would intervene for the sake of racial justice if necessary, Ike's Final Battle meticulously recounts events in unfolding detail, with an inset section of black-and-white photographic plates. An extensive bibliography, notes, and an index round out this welcome addition to American history shelves.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! It tells President Eisenhower's story very well, and it kept my interest throughout the narrative.

Pipes' thesis, that Eisenhower went through a significant "struggle within himself" about his belief in civil rights (requiring significant social change) and majority rule (which did not support significant social change at that time), is also well argued. I especially appreciate the honesty in which the author tells Ike's story, including his strengths and weaknesses.

Also, Pipes does an excellent job of noting the number of significant Republican policy makers who were strong advocates of civil rights legislation during the 1950s and 1960s.

While I think everyone will benefit from reading this book, it especially should be read by all Republican office holders and candidates, today.

This book is a fast 300 pg. narrative on Eisenhower's nuanced positions regarding civil rights. The nuance is not whether equal rights for African Americans were right vs. wrong, but instead Eisenhower's struggle on how best to protect the rights of these Americans against the prejudice of southern conservatives who controlled the southern states and the relevant committees of the Senate.

Pipes begins with Eisenhower's experiences and contributions to the cause of equal rights in the military and ends in his retirement, with the climax happening 2/3 of the way through the book when Ike sends federal troops to Little Rock, AK to defend the right of African American students to attend a whites-only public school in spite of a bigoted governor who sends the national guard to keep them out. The book finishes with reflections on his contributions looking back from the time of Kennedy and LBJ moving the ball forward even further.

Pipes provides an incredibly fair report on President Eisenhower's policy positions and actions given the frequent opaqueness of his position depending on the situation and the company he was keeping. Many have attempted to paint Ike as a racist political opportunist or a courageous leader of the civil rights movement, with both positions given to hyperbole. Instead, Pipes portrays a man who respects majoritarian positions while realizing in his heart the wrongness of institutionalized bigotry even though Eisenhower, a man of his time, shares some prejudicial beliefs. The struggle for Eisenhower is often how to move the majority to his position without his having to depend on fiery rhetoric to change hearts and minds.

While Eisenhower was never a die-hard politico, he left the GOP with a wonderful legacy inherent in republicanism as a form of government instituted in 1787. Reading this book in 2007 shows how far the current majority of Republicans have mutated away from the principles of republicanism and Eisenhower, mostly due to the Southern Conservative Democrats who emigrated to the GOP after LBJ led the Democratic party into passing the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts.

Pipes' only flaw in the book, so minor it's not worth knocking down a star, is a weak-hearted attempt to define Eisenhower as a conservative even though all empirical evidence in the book and other studies on Eisenhower provide ample evidence that he was a moderate who "got it" regarding our founding ideal of republicanism that holds that government is obligated to defend our individual liberty rights. The examples of Eisenhower's actions in the book are a case study in republicanism, not conservatism, where Ike closely follows the examples of previous Republican presidents who used federal power to protect individual and minority rights (e.g., Madison, Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt). Conservatives by definition abhor using federal power to protect individual rights, they instead promote the ideal of "state rights" in hopes the process of "democratic conservatism" at the state level will "protect the will of the people", i.e., conservatives want to employ simple majorities leveraging state power to deny individuals and minority groups equal rights and protections.
