A fascinating, and largely undiscovered masterpiece purportedly addressing the Nature of Time. If you've read Grammatical Man, don't let that turn you off. This one reads like a different author

A very informative book, will change your world view.
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1998-04-16
It has been a few years since I read this book. I remember the cover notes saying that I would never look at the world in the same way again and I must say that it fundamentally changed my world view. It is a very intelligent book that is wide ranging in scope but uses time as a central theme. The author convinces us that nothing exists alone and that there are clocks and cycles everywhere. I recommend to any science reader.

Me parece que es un libro que tiene el contenido acertado para yo poderlo aplicar en mi trabajo de grado de Ingeniería en Instrumentación y Control.

Da ejemplos de casos reales muy claros y tiene una guia metodológica muy buena.

A Classic 'Logic-based' AI programming book!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-27
Ringwood and Huntbach were my professors in graduate school. They taught us a course titled Multi Agent Systems. Much of the areas covered in those lectures find their way in this superb account on AI programming.

The first few chapters are accessible to readers without a strong AI background. The material gets more involving as we go through the book.

Interestingly, the book develops the idea of 'agent-oriented' programming chronologically from the the days preceeding the Fifth generation project to present day multi-agent technologies.

I would highly recommend the book to all AI students, researchers and practitioners.

A highly recommended addition to robotic studies reference
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-08
Algorithms control the computational processes relating the indispensable sensors and actuators required for robot navigation and environmental perception. A clear and thorough understanding of how algorithms work is fundamentally essential for developing efficient and usable robots. Capably edited by Bruce Randall Donald, Kevin Lynch, and Daniela Rus, Algorithmic And Computational Robotics: New Directions is drawn from an interdisciplinary group of scientists who contributed their findings, commentaries, and analysis to the Fourth Workshop on the Algorithmic Foundation of Robotics (WAFR 2000). This superbly presented text covers such issues as geometric algorithms, minimalist and underactuated robotics, robot controllability, manufacturing and assembly, holonomic and nonholonomic motion planning, manipulation planning, sensor-based planning, task-level planning, grasping, navigation, biometrics, medical robots, self-assembly, modular and reconfigurable robots, and distributed manipulation. Algorithmic And Computational Robotics is an impressive and highly recommended addition to robotic studies reference collections and reading lists.

Artificial Life is the new Artificial Intelligence.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-04
If you are intrested in how biological systems can be simulated via computer or in what contect computer programs or computer simulations can be called alive -- this is the book to read.

Eventhou the articials in this book are technical reports from a scientific conference most provide easy reading for the layperson.

Artificial Life is a fassinating scientific endevor that seeks to do for biology what Artificial Instelligence did for psychology -- model biological processes, instead of mental processes on the computer and look to biology as a model for computation -- using techniques such as Genetic Algorithms, Cellular Automata and Neural Networks.

I find that all the books I've read that were published by the Santa Fe Institute to be intresting -- how ever the Artifical Life series is the easiest for an armchair scientist to grasp.
