Complete treatment of robust multivariable control
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-05
This is among the most complete books on control systems design that I have come across. Highlights of the robust multivariable control section include eigenstructure assignment, H2 design, Hinf design and QFT. Highlights of the nonlinear control section include SISO and MIMO inversion-based control and extended linearization. Throughout the book, the presentation of the relevant mathematics is clear and particularly complete, and all sections are illustrated with practical design examples. Note however that issues of implementating the techniques described in this book in software are not discussed.

An amazing and very useful book

This book is a delight. It has three parts. The first part, the theoretical presentation, is of exceptional quality.

The second part lists some applications - this section is of lesser value. The third part offers C++ implementation of the presented concepts. This last part is less valuable. For instance, the authors begin the section with a presentation of ... C++ classes! Clearly, the authors are not programmers!

Despite these shortcomings, this is an extremely useful and easy to read mathematical book - including non-mathematicians.

a Book of Rapid Prototyping

Review Date: 2000-05-12
This book is almost a must for all people entering the RP business. Well and clearly written book that despite of it's age is still valid reading. Exellent view over the history of 'automated fabrication', i.e. Rapid Prototypig. This book could be used as well for educational purposes as for setting up your own business. Personally I use it as a very good source of information and reference in my own work as a researcher.

Highly recommended.

The field of auction theory has been heavily developed. With intricate rules for specialised auctions. Often resulting in a strong dose of experiments and theoretical analysis. The book gives some recent instances. Where these are typically characterised by items being offered (or wanted) in interdependent markets. Hence the need for contingency bidding.

The practical instantiations include the selling of hotel rooms and entertainment events. The complexities are such that the concept of bidding agents is used. Where agents are then assumed to have some optimal strategy. Much of the book revolves around finding what these strategies might be.

Brings latest arguments in the lit together in one place
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-10
Horst Hendriks-Jansen demonstrates a clear understanding of all the modern arguments about the nature of intelligence and how they relate to each other. He has a clear and logical writing style that explains and debunks many important theories. Although many of these theories and criticisisms have appeared in other places, this book brings them all together and relates them. He describes his theory of interactive emergence and the notion of language as scaffolding for learning. This weaves together many contemporary ideas into a consistient whole. A great deal of the book is devoted to debunking existing theories - I would have liked to see a more detailed exploration of interactive emergence and how language as scaffolding might work. Definitely worth a read, especially if you are interested in clear arguments against symbol-systems hypothesis etc.

this book presents a theory of control systems clearly and lucidly and presents the matlab simulation of control systems in a way which is most needed for brush-up in the eleventh hour. the author has taken keen interest in presenting the subject right from the grassroot level and a gradual development of the concepts is presented in the easy-to-use tool like way. i firmly believe that this should be in the bag of all engineers working on simulation of control systems.

Enjoyable Reading

Chris Hannold has a long and varied background in combat robotics. He has buit robots to compete in the biggest combat events in the USA and Europe, and he has organized his own combat events. He is certainly well qualified to author this book.

The book itself is a rarity in the technical field of robotics -- it's actually an enjoyable read. Chris inserts stories from his own experience into the book that relate his topic to his real-world experiences. He presents a lot of 'food for thought' concerning the design and construction of a combat robot.

This may not be the most technical of the books on the subject, but I find it to be the most enjoyable to read.
