This book are written for good QUALITATIVE (not mathematic!) understanding in Adaptive Control. Since the mimimum use of mathematic but extensive use of qualitative description , Good and sufficient deep understand Adaptive control bring available to reader in Short time ! (Compare to Adaptive Control by Astrom or Robust Adaptive Control by Ioannou which are suit for the math lover.) Finally, To Anybody who are not control engineer (i.e EE,ME etc.) and don't like math. This book will be best for Engineers who would like apply adaptive control to their work.

I haven't, as yet, read this book of Dr. Karplus', but I was one of those fortunate enough to have been a student of his, and I have most of his other books, and many binders of notes from his classes.
Dr. Karplus was one of those minds that inspired awe and humility in his students. He had an incredible breadth and depth of knowledge in so many areas and subjects that it seemed he must have spent every second reading, thinking, and integrating to have created his mind. I was so struck by his achievements, and more, by him personally, that after the last class I took from him I wrote him a letter telling him how much I admired him, and how much of an inspiration he was to me. After he got it, he called me into his office and thanked me, telling me how touched he was.

I was very saddened when I heard of his death, and I'm very glad that his colleagues got together and created this volume. Thank you, gentlemen.

I urge anyone who is interested in the subject of computer modeling and simulation to read this book, or any of Karplus' books. You can't do any better in this area.

QUANTITATIVE MODELING WITH VIGOR!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-10
What distinguishes this book from other neuronal modeling books? Firstly, it contains a solid quantitative flavor necessary for real advances in neural networks. Secondly, it places an emphasis on neuronal models not encountered in computational neuroscience. Thirdly, it is written with authority by some well known names in the field. Each chapter is self-contained and written in a didactic fashion with a future perspectives section and a problem set. The contents range from stochastic fluctuations of ionic channels to morphologically realistic neural networks. Some features include: Lanczos matrices to construct fully equivalent cables, application of Maxwell equations to derive the cable equation, and a chapter devoted to nonlinear cable theory co-authored by one of the founders of theoretical biophysics. This book is thoroughly recommended to anyone who is serious about neuronal modeling.

I have got several ideas from this book. I have never used Mathematica, but one of the most important features of the book, is the fact that is enough clear, and its code can be translated to oher languages veary easy. I recomend this book for every person interested in cellular automata applications and implementations rather that pure theory.

Nonlinear Control and Analytical Mechanics is an excellent masterpiece that has been written by experienced researchers and educators. In a little over 200 pages, the authors have summarized all the developments in nonlinear control and analyitical mechanics in the past 50 years. The most important theme in the book is the emphasis that it places on the relationship between control and mechanics through the calculus of variations, and which is often missed by many books on the subject.

The book begins with a lucid approach to modelling of mechanical systems as the first step to control; lays the fundamental principles to analytical mechanics, namely, the Newtonian appraoch, and then the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian approaches; then develops the necessary mathematical tools for analysis and design, which include: the necessary background material of advanced calculus, to the concept of differentible manifolds and vector bundles, and ends with concepts of stability and differentiable dynamics.

The book then introduces nonlinear control systems on differentiable manifolds using local coordinates on R^n; then discuss basic Lyapunov stability theory and advanced stability concepts; then discusses the problem of feedback linearization and equivalence to a linear system; then discusses stabilization and adaptive control ;and ends with variable structure control systems.

The book has been expertly written and will be highly valuable as reference book to practicing engineers and graduate students of electrical and mechanical engineering interested in nonlinear control and its application in various systems such as aircraft control, robotics and automotive and chemical industries.

This is simply the best book written on nonlinear control theory. The contents form the basis for feedback linearization techniques, nonlinear observers, sliding mode control, understanding relative degree, nonminimum phase systems, exact linearization, and a host of other topics. A careful reading of this book will provide vast rewards. A fantastic book.
