Well written reminder of what we should be doing

This 240-page book covers the key issues for managing project teams. It covers the full range of issues and provides advice for managing project change, team dynamics and cultural diversity, and developing effective project teams.

It goes into areas such as how to inspire team performance, and how to develop self-managed work teams, then transform them into self-motivated project teams. It also contains self-assessment exercises that are valuable checkpoints as you follow the advice in the book.

Most of the advice is common sense, but the material should be read by every practicing project manager at least once a year for a reminder of what's important.

A Classic!

This book is a real classic. You will see how rocket wizzard and space visionary Wernher von Braun and his colleagues imagined a manned mission to Mars with the technology available in the mid 20th century. With today's knowledge and financial horizon, von Braun's vision looks pretty oversized, and the surface of Mars certainly is very different from what they believed 50 years ago. The very value of this book is that it simply showed how such an extensive mission could be made feasible -- that it is possible to send people to Mars without fancy technology of science fiction writers. The authors use some calculus and diagrams to explain the complicated flight dynamics for sending a spacecraft to another planet and landing on its surface.
Today we know that a mission to Mars will not look like von Braun's "Mars Project" but it is good to know that most of the basics haven't changed. Buy this book together with Robert Zubrin's "Case for Mars" and you'll see the progress within half a century.

A book for the true space junkie.

Do you wonder how they did it? How they actually figured out how to get to the moon? Well, this is Von Braun's plan for getting to mars using the technologies available in the early 1950's and it shows the detailed thinking necessary to figure out how to make it all work. Lots of math and diagrams. My vote for the best book of the century. To give you some idea, I already own this book, a 1962 edition. It is getting too precious to thumb through.

I teach 3rd grade and purchased this book to introduce the students to starting a business of their own for a writing prompt. The reading specialist reads this book to the third grade classes because it also goes along with two of the stories in one of our reading themes.

Max and Ruby are at it again in another humorous adventure that happens to contain valuable lessons about entrepreneurship and competition. Ruby and her friend Louise have their eyes set on two new Fire Angel flashing rings at the novelty store, and they decide to set up a lemonade stand so they can earn the money to purchase the rings. While little brother Max wants to help, the girls do not see him as part of their business plan and they send him off to play. Not easily deterred, Max sets up his own stand and shows the girls a thing or two about competition. Max's Bunny Business weaves some important economics concepts into a clever story with delightful illustrations that will appeal to readers of all ages.

Going through the motions?
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

Are you going through life, just going through the motions, or are you living with meaning? There are exercises in "The Meaning of Life Project" that give you a way to think about what you are doing on this planet. For example, you write an essay after answering the questions "Am I here by accident or God's choice?" There are no wrong answers, but after you choose the answer above, you write a list of things that inspire you, an inventory of your skills, what results you want to have happen, and what the initial choice above MEANS to you. Either way, you'll choose a purpose and start to make it happen.

For young people, with a faltering sense of direction, or for someone going through a crisis of self-doubt or needing redirection in life, this is a handy manual and could prove a very important tool to craft a new path in life.

Produce a Better Life through Improved Attitudes and Goals

Like most people, I find it valuable to relook at my basic assumptions about life and where I should go next. Fortunately, talented authors and speakers are constantly offering new ways to perform this important set of tasks. Reading their wonderful books and attending their outstanding seminars helps me discipline myself to take these important relooks.

Every so often, I am very fortunate and come across a book that teaches me something that I didn't know before. The Meaning of Life Project is just such a book, and I am very grateful for having had a chance to read it and apply the book's lessons.

Although most of us would benefit from having a life coach, few of us have one. Mr. Mathews is such an experienced coach, and he built the book to allow you to coach yourself using the methods that he employs with his coaching clients.

The book relies extensively on several of the best psychological assessment tools. As a result, you'll come to know your own perspective much better than before . . . and be able to contrast that perspective with others you could choose.

Mr. Mathews has the great talent of simplicity as a writer. He is able to introduce and explore very complicated subjects in just a few simple pages . . . and make the material work. He does this through using clear words, uncomplicated explanations and helpful exercises. To give you a sense of this, he will help you explore your religious beliefs about God in just 14 pages. Think of that!

I liked the breadth of the subjects he covered very much. I don't remember any other book this slim covering so much. It's almost like reading ten books. In fact, although I could have easily read the book in one sitting, I found myself putting it down repeatedly so I could mull over what I had learned from doing the exercises.

As someone who likes to encourage people to accomplish big things, I was very thrilled by the chapter on achieving the impossible.

If you only read one book about designing a better life for yourself, you would do well to read this one.

As for myself, let me share a few things I learned that made big difference to me. First, if I find myself being critical of someone for some reason, it's probably because I'm experiencing that fault myself . . . and projecting it onto the other person. Second, rather than assume that everything should be changed (my usual mindset), how about accepting that things are as they should be and dealing with them as I find them? Third, stop assigning meaning to everything that happens. By taking the emotional tinge away, it's easier to find out what's really going on and act accordingly.

I hope you will have similarly valuable epiphanies from this book.

By the way, Mr. Mathews also provides instructions and encouragement for how to coach others by using the book. If you have children or grandchildren you would like to help, please consider becoming their coach after you have finished applying the book for yourself.

May God bless you and your purposes!

Your eyes will be delighted and your fingers will quiver in eagerness to get at some of these projects (the oak leaf footstool cover for me!). They are truly gorgeous and worth spending many hours to make, knowing that they will be such beautiful additions to our homes, or gifts to our friends. Wait until you see the wild red sky with the raven and the little fluffy foxes! Wait until you see the florentine valance and wish yourself queen of the realm and able to command the skills of 10 embroiderers to make several for you! And YES, they are easy-to-make projects because she has given such clear directions, charts, colour advice, and photos of her own finished products for each one. Everything you need is right here.

I got this book as a father's day present and I absolutely love it. It has great photography of each of the finished projects, gives a brief description of the project and interesting facts about each. There are also photos of some of Graves' 3-d models for some concept buildings that never "made it to production", as well as a peppering of his wonderfully whimsical sketches. A must have for anyone interested in architecture or design, or anyone that has even a remote fascination into the beauty that is a Graves' design.

This book and the "Simple Project" series gives you lessons, templates, samples and a CD to use with your students. The students can work independently through the step-by-step instructions and learn how to create their own power point presentations. These books are available in primary, intermediate and challenging. I have bought several to cover the different needs of my students. I even had my own daughter do several of the lessons so she could learn these skills. These are the best teacher-computer lesson guides I seen.
