Riveting, fascinating glimpse at NASA ingenuity in 1970.

As a boy, I found this book in the public library and read all about the ill-fated Apollo 13 spaceflight of April 1970. I had lived through the experience as an 11-year-old, and I remembered the drama of the real-life explosion aboard the Apollo spacecraft as it made its way to the moon. But it was not until I read this remarkable story, that I gained true insights into what had happened and how NASA flight crews and engineers were able to bring the crippled ship home safely. I read this book about 20 times as a kid, finding it again in the libary and checking it out regularly. I loved it so much that I always checked for it in used bookstores, because it went out of print quickly. Author Henry S.F. Cooper is a gifted science writer, making complex matters simple and understandable, yet he never underexplained what was happening. I finally located it in the summer of 1991, in a used book store in Cooperstown, N.Y., while on a visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Remarkably, I had stumbled into a bookshop in the very town where Henry S.F. Cooper's family lived, and the store had used copies of several of his science books. I bought one of each, including my beloved hardback copy of ''13: The Flight That Failed'' (that was the original title). I still re-read it from time to time, with the same awe and love that I have had for it since I was little. The film, ''Apollo 13,'' was a fine film narrative, but Cooper's classic book should not be missed. Give it to a 10-year-old you love. :)

Before J. Lovell's "Lost Moon", this was the definitve story

The first detailed account of the Apollo 13 accident (this book originally came out in the early 70's) and one of the best (second only to Lovell's "Lost Moon"). Cooper tells the entire mission story and uses many of the Mission Control transcripts that (in my opinion) are the difference between a third person telling of a mission story or a feeling of actually being there. This book has been re-printed, so it's availability isn't an issue. Read this along with Lost Moon and you'll see the blatant errors in the movie "Apollo 13". Highly recommended.

Highly readable

This is the Apollo 13 story almost exclusively from the Mission Control perspective. It very thorougly and completely details what went on in Houston from the moment of the "accident" to the recovery of the astronauts. This book helped me to understand how critical Mission Control is to space flights, how the astronauts are not necessarily piloting their spacecraft but that it is a joint effort. I was surpised by many facts given here such as that Mission Control had more information about the status of the spacecraft than the astronauts themselves. The author does an outstanding job of expalining the technicalities of what happened and why without making you feel like a dummy.

Through the lens of 25 years, it is very interesting to read this account and feel some of the respect and almost naivete the author and the public felt for NASA and the government at large that has long since been lost. I also enjoyed how the book was divided into three sections "Out" "Around" "Home".

I did feel the book suffered from its narrow focus on Mission Control only during the duration of the "event," and no pictures -- none and only one line diagram. These are small complaints, however. The book makes a wonderful companion to Jim Lovell's account.

A must read review of the Apollo 13 spaceflight

I too found this book as a child in the public library some years ago and have remembered it always. In gripping and understandable detail, Cooper successfully recounts how close we came to a space disaster and how the entire NASA team managed to avoid it. Richly textured narrative that allows you to understand how space flights were run and controlled without drowning in minutia.

I've never been able to forget this book. I still remember the feeling that a vast and incredible secret was shared with me. For years, I was the only one who knew anything about the Apollo 13 mission and could recite the details I learned from the book. I knew the astronauts, controllers, and personalities. Watching the movie brought all of that back and confirmed what I knew. This was a compelling and incredible story. A must read for anyone even mildly interested in the Apollo 13 story.

A short anecdote:

After reading "A Man on the Moon" by the great A. Chaikin (space author, god-like genius) I developed a ravenous hunger for any reading material relating to the early space program (and Apollo in general). So when I saw this old book, "13: the flight that failed", in my school's library, I HAD to read it!

I was not disappointed. Mr. Cooper's book is THE story of Apollo 13.

I appreciate the fact that Jim Lovell's book "Lost Moon" was written as a first hand account but it seems a little mishandled (most likely Kluger's influence) and didn't live up to it's full potential. Furthermore, It is more of a biography of Jim Lovell. "13: the flight that failed" sums it all up nicely in a gripping yet thoughtful manner.

btw: "A House in Space" (i think by Cooper also but i'm not sure) is a great story of the Skylab space station

After readying this marvelous book, I found that Linux and Ubuntu is for everyone. Linux should not be a problem, if one follows this book and reads it cover to cover. This is a well written book that everyone should have, even for future reference. It goes into detail explaining every single topic regarding the Linux Ubuntu Desktop Edition 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and it does it in a concise and easy matter. I sincerely recommend it to everyone who wants to get into the Linux world, without reading nonsense technicalities that does not amount to anything.

I was very uncomfortable with the idea of using linux but I wanted to try something new and this book really eases you into the process of learning to use linux without being overwhelming. It explains everything in easy to understand 'non-geek' language and is a good starting point if you want to learn more about linux and are a traditional windows user. After reading this book, I purchased many ubuntu and other linux distro books to help me understand linux more but I do not think I would have understood them that well if I had not read this book first. I would highly recommend it to "newbies".

I wrote my original review for a discussion forum at:
http://www.certforums.co.uk/forums/thread26912.html

Not too long ago, I reviewed The Official Ubuntu Book, Third Edition published by Prentice Hall (July 13, 2008). The thing about reviewing a later edition of an already successful book, is that you need to make sure it updates to the current version of whatever it's describing, which in this case is Ubuntu 8.04, the Hardy Heron. I dinged the Benjamin Mako Hill, et al. book, primarily because it didn't address readers who were already dedicated Ubuntu users and who needed to know the ins and outs of upgrading vs. doing a clean install. I've since learned (and it wasn't addressed in the Prentice Hall book) that there actually is a direct upgrade patch from 6.06 to 8.04 (and this information was a little hard to come by). I needed that information, because performing that upgrade was the task I needed to perform. Rickford Grant's third edition book arrived at my home yesterday. How will this book appeal to the complete Ubuntu newbie vs. the experienced "non-geek" with upgrade needs?

Bottom line for "upgrade" people is that Grant dropped the ball as far as continuing to address his earlier readers who want to learn how to turn our "aging" Ubuntus into brand new Hardy Herons. I highly recommend picking up this text if you've never used Ubuntu before and have a burning need to learn how Ubuntu 8.04 will benefit you on the desktop (and it really will). For those of us with a few years of Ubuntu under our belts and who want to upgrade what we've already got, I guess http://ubuntuforums.org is the best place for us to get clued in.

The novice as well as the pro can learn a lot from her insights and suggestions. I keep it by my bedside for reference and also for just an enjoyable read. It is a keeper.

Nice book. Friendly and relaxed writing style. Great ideas for your garden. I particularly like her recommendations for how to get your landscaping designed on your own without hiring a professional. Very practical ideas. I recently loaned this book to some friends with an ugly, wasted back yard. They had been stuck for years because they couldn't afford a landscape designer and they just didn't know what to do with their yard. Two weeks later I was at their house and they were on their way implementing ideas from this book. Now they are "unstuck" and working on beautifying their yard.

I loved this book! I read it in a weekend (very easy read) and will be reading tid bits of it throughout the year. It has great tips to be used throughout the entire year - for every season! The book shows you how to start beds from scratch, plant flowers, bulbs, gardens, how to make and use compost, container gardens, gardening journals, etc. Loads of information that can really come in handy. If you want a book full of lovely full page photos... this isn't the book for you. This is a very useable do it yourself book chuck full of information. The book has no photos but has beautifully drawn illustrations. This one's a keeper!!

Barry Flicker's book "Working at Warp Speed" is a small book, that speaks volumes. Frequently in todays world, as shown through the media's headlines, we often hear of, and witness for ourselves the gross extent at which individuals, and individuals connected to business will sacrifice the most basic of morals, in order to quote "get ahead". Flicker returns to the fundamentals of what it means to be human, in explaining that, personally accountability, communication of feelings, and making goals situations where numerous parties come out winners, is a main message of the book. This is in contrast to blaming others for any mishaps you come across, holding everything in, becoming frustrated, and lastly, fighting not to be a "loser" destroying anything in your path on the way to quote "win". By following Flicker's book we see that money, and success, is a bi-product of holding ones integrity at the forefront of ones life. In the end by doing this life becomes much more enjoyable.

Flecker uses an interesting approach to help the reader get into his book and relate to the issues that block project success. His focus is on the people who make the project succeed, and rightly it should be. Quite simply, people make projects succeed!

His 4 rules of warp speed are simple to grasp, and they are vital to project success. All in all a great resource book for any project leader or team member!

This book is about achieving project success at warp speed. Barry Flicker describes the various kinds of project team members and suggests the best ways to deal with them.

Flicker uses stories to drive home his points beginning with: Many project teams fail at proper communication due to (perceived) lack of time. He describes the Four Rules of Warp Speed that can provide relief from the many frustrations. The secret is to know when and how to slow down and to include all the right people at the right times.

Flicker is a gifted professional speaker, successful business consultant and a fine writer.

In a world that's drowning in books on management in general, and project management in particular, this one really stands out.

The author takes a far more human approach to the discipline, and addresses the real-world issues that REALLY cause teams and projects to fall apart, miss deadlines, etc. Gone are the elaborate theoretical constructs that sound good while reading about them, but which don't stick, and thus make no difference in behavior.

In their place is very accessible, well-writtten guidance on identifying the pivotal issues, and how to address them. This is MUST reading for anyone having trouble managing multiple priorities.

This book is a great resource for the development of lessons for children in the 9 - 14 age range. I used this to prepare a lesson for a home school group. The children really enjoyed the process as well as the end product. This book is full of "do-able" projects with a topic which otherwise can overburden young people with tedium. I would, however, recommend that the teacher practice the projects with the materials to be used. For instance, poster board is too thin for the activities in which a cardboard loom is used.

Very good but somewhat flawed.

This book contains instructions for creative and enjoyable weaving projects. Instructions are clearly written and are well illustrated. Supplies required are easily available.

The title makes it sound as if it is a children's book (YOU can weave), and in some ways it is written as a child's book. But instructions are all addressed to a teacher of children. As a result, the book suffers slightly from a mixed identity.

Mixed in with the illustrations of completed projects done by students are photos of weavings done by knowledgeable weavers using different types of looms than those used in the book. These weavings are much more impressive in appearance than the children's weavings (logically so), but it can lead to disappointment if the reader thinks this book will enable him/her to produce items like those shown.

Excellant starter book.

This is a lovely book, filled to the last page with wonderful ideas. I was lucky enough to have inherited my mother's table loom and am just now beginning to do a little background research on weaving before tackling the rather daunting equipment my mother left me. I found this title among those I was browsing and decided that it would be a good place to start. There are several techniques which are mentioned also in Weaving Without a Loom, another book I would recommend for beginners, but Monahoghan and Joyner's book goes several steps farther. Burningham introduces paper weaving, but these authors show visual techniques, similar to Escher's style of tricking the eye, introduce modifying frames, interwoven photos, and basket making to their repertoire. They show stick weaving, but introduce the use of straws to make the process smoother and color changes to add interest to the bands.

I was particularly impressed with the depth with which they showed techniques, particularly in tapestry work with colors added to create pictures. The Japanese braid work was also interesting as was some of their beading information. I particularly enjoyed the brief discussion of plaid and undertook the weaving of a small square which I used to make a passport bag for a friend going to London this summer.

This is a great introduction to project management for anyone in any field. It covers the basic concisely and includes and lot of tips and principles that will help you to be successful and avoid the most common errors beginning project managers make.

The book is laid out well and the most important information is set off and highlighted. It is an especially good book for beginning managers or others who are responsible for the completion of projects, but may not be project managers themselves.

This book is also a very quick read. However, it is packed with lots of useful content and no fluff. However, it is not comprehensive. For this you will have to go somewhere else if you will be managing complex projects. It also doesn't cover using project management software in-depth.

If you are unfamiliar with project management, or it has been a while since you managed a project, you will find this handy book to be just what the doctor ordered. Project management can be a rewarding, exhilarating experience. Yet, far too many people head into it feeling a mild streak of terror, if not outright dread. And why not? The levels of sophistication one can bring to the task of project management varies so wildly that it is easy to be left confused, overwhelmed, and without direction.

The very largest of projects such as launching a space capsule, building an intercontinental shipping fleet, or developing a gene therapy process can involve months and months of work, if not years and years, involving several hundred to several thousand people with a budget that ranges well into the millions. If that is the kind of project that you are going to be involved with, you need a different book.

This book is for the typical career professional who is asked to manage a project of anywhere from just himself or herself to a staff of say 10 or so. The project is probably going to be 6 months or less and cost far less than a million dollars. Still, there are lots of things that you need to know, and you need to know them in a hurry. That is what the 10 Minute Guide to Project Management is all about.

Each of the 18 chapters provides the essential nuggets of wisdom that will carry you along with a full understanding of what your role as project manager involves, kinds of tasks you will be handling, the interpersonal issues that will arise, and how to stay on time and on budget in pursuit of desired outcome. Each chapter takes about 10 minutes to read and absorb. Key glossary terms are provided in the appendix along with a list of further reading and a handy index.

Each chapter is presented in the form of a lesson and includes at the outset a list of three or four things that you will learn as a result of completing the chapter. The great news is that if you are a fairly organized person and have been able to accomplish great things on your own, you probably have great potential for being an effective project manager as well.

Today, there are a variety of supporting tools at your disposal that will see you through to a successful end. These include everything from notebooks and planning guides, to wall charts, to a sophisticated array of software tools--the initial portions of which you can learn within a day and be up and running by the second day.

Once you have successfully completed your first project, or your first project in a while, you just may find that you are so integrated that you are ready to tackle the next and the next. That will work out well in terms of your career progression because managing projects gives you visibility and exposure within your organization that you may not otherwise muster.

While the topic of project management may seem somewhat dry on the surface, the book will hold your attention with insightful quotes and witticisms from leaders throughout history, and will offer tips, cautions, and definitions of terms in plain English.

Yours Truly,
Jeff Davidson

The book is a good, quick read about the hows 'n' whys of project management. I'd like to have seen a bit more about the pros 'n' cons of using project management software, but that's OK.

If you're looking for a book specifically about software project management, immediately start with Steve McConnell's "Software Project Survival Guide".

Donald Mitchell has established himself with a series of books beginning with The 2000 Percent Solution. His main message is "What if...". In this latest work he has built on the very successful 2000 percent solution and exponential success models by asking what if we were to compress four hundred years of achievements into just twenty.

I have followed Don's progress from the 2000 percent solution; taking courses for my studies based on his books and inspiration from his writings. Don writes with an easy conversational style, coupled with his keen observational skills and interest in history result in books that captivate and motivate the reader.

Don continues to challenge us with ideas in this latest book by asking: "What if and why can't we achieve better than what we achieve to day?" By stretching our imagination we can achieve greater success and contentment in all parts of our daily lives.

This latest book takes the reader on a comprehensive journey of his early years and experiences through to the 2000 percent solution idea and how his imagination was continually challenged with new projects by developing an idea and getting other people interested in those ideas...enough to make them want to think about them some more and call him back to propose more. The book illustrates how enthusiasm is infectious and I found I became involved in the story of this truly remarkable man. His experiences reviewing books have a lot to inspire others to want to do the same and these are well documented.

If there is one shortcoming of the book, it is that in some places, the book leaves the reader hanging-waiting for more to the story. I am hopeful Don will be working on a follow up volume to this work to allow readers to complete the journey with this project.

In summary, a very well written and thought provoking book; it captures the reader and leads them through an inspiring and vivid journey. I was captivated by the book and found it difficult to put down once I became involved in the story. A great story and journey. Well done, Don Mitchell!

I would like to say that these revelations from God to my Guru-Don Mitchell-the messenger of God are Nth century generation progress in 21st century only. I find new skills learned from the books "The 2000 percent solutions" "Breakthrough Business Growth II" and "The ultimate Competitive Advantage, "The 2000 percent squared solution by my Guru-Professor Donald Mitchell and Carol Coles; form the foundation for the effective and overall control of life and to achieve the exponential business success of our organization.

This is not only an explication of Don Mitchell's 2,000 percent solution for the world, but a carefully programmed series of lessons of awareness and innnovation application. Like his other books, this is clearly articulated with excellent examples to illustrate his points. I am especially fond of his chapter on teaching via the master-craftsman model and what needs to be the foundation of good teaching (as in, ask what they want and need to know, answer their questions, then support them with relevant, evocative, and sensory examples).

How he astutely ties together Impressionists, Jackson Pollock, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Guinness Book of Records, and his law degree at Harvard to support his contentions is fascinatng. With respect to the Guinness Book of "trivial and valueless facts" - what if the book featured "valuable facts," like "the best practices of nonprofit organizations." Now wouldn't that be incredibly useful and efficient resource and solution. As a result of his law education, he discovered there can be "many different potential 2,000 percent solutions within the same opportunity." Interpretation is everything, providing an incredible array of applications, implications, and solutions.

This book is eye-opening and beautifully written, making it hard to put down. Anyone who reads it cannot hope to escape without being inspired to conjure up "what ifs" about how she/he could help locally or globally to apply a 2,000 percent solution to improve life. Bravo!! Read Adventures of an Optimist, and you'll experience quite a fascinating adventure yourself. It's that provocative.

As you think about the title, you might wonder, "How could anyone be an optimist today?" Just view two or three TV newscasts daily, and you'll assume there's very little we can be upbeat about.

Yet with his customary conversational style--supported by solid research and data--Mitchell shifts our thoughts away from what's wrong with the world. He challenges us to see multitudes of possibilities, grasp them, then maximize them. He never doubts the validity of this formula.

A keen student of history, Mitchell uses the lessons of the past to offer guidelines for future progress.

I applaud Don Mitchell's imagination. He makes me wonder whether centuries from now he might be viewed as the Nostradamus of this era.

One more thought: This morning I seemed to accomplish four times as much as I am accustomed to accomplishing in a half day's work. I feel elated, but not boastful. Don Mitchell nudges me to accomplish twenty times as much. My life and career will be incredibly more exhilarating when I elevate to that level.

I got this book along with ELPSI-12 and just finished it.

Wow, reading this book took me on a journey that I still feel like I am on.

Angels, Sataniel, Christ Yeshu(?), Earthly Mother???

This was an adjustment for me but once I got into the book, it flowed.

I recommend it.

Good read.

Having previously read the Essence Gospel of Peace, I ordered this book as a comparision and it is basically the same. Rev. Smith's addition is a pleasant presentation and the usage of Yeshu and Yehovah made the text more personal.

I gave this book 5-stars for the total message, peace.

There are a few typesetting errors but no worries, a little correction tape worked well.

Cheers Rev. Mel, God bless you and your work.

The Gospel of Peace, gives you peace.

Purchasing this book series on a whim has enriched my life enormously.

I love so much about this book but one of my favorite among many phrases is:

"Here and now is the mystery revealed, here and now is the curtain lifted, be not afraid O'man!"

I have been enlightened by this book and recommend it as a good book.

Angels, Communions, Sons of Light , very Interesting

Reading this book made me feel as though I was being prepped before going on a journey.

Be prepared, this book is different.

There are soooo many angels, so much is taught and learned about the angels, Christ Yeshu (We all were know him as Jesus), God, the earth plus so much more.

It is a little overwhelming, while reading it I used Google to research Sataniel, Asmodeus and other names and terminology that I was unfamiliar with.

It is one of my favorite books now and I highly recommend it.
