The updated, expanded edition of The Last Album: Eyes From The Ashes Of Auschwitz- Birkenau is out, and no less hard-hitting than the original. These black and white photos were not supposed to reach the world: the Nazi order to destroy all personal photos brought to each concentration camp was meant to destroy memories as much as evidence. Despite this mandate, author Weiss uncovered an archive of over 2,400 photos brought to Auschwitz by Jewish deportees across Europe - photos hidden and saved, at great risk to their owners. These photos accompany a traveling exhibition which is making its way around the world, presenting over 400 of these photos and how the deportees arrived at Auschwitz - and how Weiss came to discover them and to research their roots. A 'must' for any serious Jewish history collection - and many a general interest holding, as well.

"The last Album" by Ann Weiss is well organized and well written. It contains 400 remarkable
photographs that were brought to Auschwitz-Birkenau by victims in 1943. These photographs were taken
prior to the Holocaust and depict people bursting with life. This is an extremely unique book, and contains material that was lovingly researched for a period of 15 years. The beauty of this book is that the
photographs and the research accomplished brings to life people that were lost during the dreadful time of
the Holocaust. The book like the author is soft, sweet, articulate and brilliant

I read this book by chance, yesterday, Memorial Day 2003.
Been crying.
It's like Schindler's List or Sophie's choice.
How could they do it?
How can we let them continue doing it?
The animals still are around us, although using another names, another symbols, another motivations.
I kept reading, hoping to find some of the people to be safe at the end, but almost everybody was killed.
Binim, Rozak, Mayer, Bronka, so many of you.
I miss you, my friends.

Should be required reading

After reading this book, I feel this should be in every house in every country. You hear so much about the people and the numbers killed that sometimes it doesn't seem real but this book makes it very real. The pictures are so powerful and at the same time so ordinary - they could be pictures of anyone's parents or grandparents. The most haunting pictures are those of the children - you have to wonder how many survived. The stories of the survivors bring it all home - "There's the aunt of the little girl I used to babysit", etc. I found it amazing that these pictures did survive 40, 50 years before being discovered again. Anyone who denies the Holocaust happened should read this book and then try to still say it never happened. Thank you Ann Weiss for bringing these pictures and the stores behind them out of the darkness.

Amazing piece of history..............

This book is an amazing piece of history. The fact that so many photos brought into Auschwitz have survived is phenomenol as all personal effects were automotically burned by the Nazis murderers. When viewing the photos in this book, which were brought in by those of the Sosnowiec-Bendzin transport, it would also be advisable to read Tadeusz Borokowski's book "This way to the gas ladies & gentleman' as this book covers the particular Sosnowiec-Bendzin transport and outlines in gruesome and terrifying detail what became of many of those on this transport. The photographs bring back to life many who are gone and also tells you those who survived, which is a relief to realise that some of those from the Polish ghettos made it. These photos bring back a lost world that will never return and along with Roman Vishniac's collection of photographs are a piece of history that is very much worth investing in.

This Spanish-English Bible is formatted nicely, with Spanish on the left side of the page, and English on the right side of the page. This makes it easy for someone learning Spanish (or English, for that matter) to get used to the sentence structure and phrases of that language.

Sound advice for managerial success anywhere, but especially in the hospitality industry
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-15
Leadership is one of those things that everyone recognizes when they see it but is difficult to define. Part of the problem is that it has so many forms. There is leadership on the battlefield, in the boardroom, in the factory, at academic institutions, in sports teams, in other words there is a leader in just about every activity involving more than one person. It is also a hard activity to carry out, because in nearly all cases the authority that the leader exercises is not based on any authoritarian right. Successful leadership is a partnership between the leader and the led, which means that the leader derives a great deal of their authority from the consent of the governed.
In this book, Rehkopf discusses the strategies good leaders employ from the perspective of the hospitality industry. He has managed hotels and resorts and opened golf and country clubs. His knowledge of the subject matter is thorough, yet his main themes are simple. If you are a manager, interact with your people, take an interest in their welfare and listen to their concerns. Leadership by controlling force is a managerial dead end, it works for a short time, as eventually people will leave. The first to leave will of course be your good people, as they are the ones with the most pride in their work and can more easily find another job.
The advice offered up in this book is sound, the American business world would be much more efficient if more managers were to follow it. Unfortunately, that is not the case. For a variety of reasons, so many managers choose to insulate themselves from their workers. While some professional distance is necessary in the work place, there are times when the human element must take precedence. By applying the basic courtesies of human interaction, good managers can motivate to an extent that no threat can ever achieve.
This book contains a simple blueprint for successfully managing a business in the hospitality industry. As such, all that aspire to or are currently managing in the business would be aided by reading and applying the advice.

Here's the book I wish someone had shared with me years ago.

This is a practical, back to the basics, presentation of every day service opportunities. Ed shared a copy of this book with me and I in turn shared it with one of our General Managers. She was so excited about its content that she requested I send more copies for her managers. We now utilize the book in management training programs, and all of our Department Managers receive a copy.

This book develops a level of understanding among our teams' managers that service is important to everyone, and when customers receive great service consistently, great results will occur.

Thanks Ed for sharing your valuable experiences with us!

In our house Liz Larrabee's book is one that never collects dust on a shelf. The book has a permanent place of honor on the coffee table where anyone can (and DOES) pick it up and enjoy the marvelous talent of this exceptional writer. This is a book for young and old alike, for poetry lovers and for those whose eyes glaze over at the mere mention of the word. Liz has a style and flair that is both outstanding and pleasing, and in this book the heart of the poet sings out from every page. Anyone who doesn't have the book....by all means get it. You will not regret the choice. I have purchased several as gifts to family and friends, and they, in turn, have placed orders for still more. Kudos, Liz....your work is exquisite !

I have almost read the covers off Liz Larrabee's book. And I'm not stopping there....My husband, who would rather eat scorpions than read poetry, after hearing me read a few excepts from the book aloud, snatched my copy and would not return it until he had finished the entire book. Thank you, Liz, for being able to get inside our hearts and our heads. Masterful!

FROM MEMORIES INTO ART

Liz Larrabee proves that the writer in all of us flowers when the ability to tap into memories is transformed into art. Her individual memory poems, short stories and nonfiction pieces are gems of language, imagination and humor. But, they rise to something greater in synergy to reveal a remarkable woman whose journey from Massachusetts to Florida takes her around the world, exploring its mysteries and people with her pen and her camera. Growing up in a time when money was scarce, young Liz finds glamour at dancing school and excitement in walking the rails of the Boston and Maine, always reaching for the brass ring of endless possibilities propelled by sharp intelligence and limitless curiosity. Married then divorced, she accepts the formidable challenges of single motherhood, often thumbing her nose at adversity with wit, wisdom, courage and vigor. Whether Larrabee is recalling a failed movie date on December 7, 1941, the shape of her hardworking mother's hands, or a Christmas with five children and no money, one that ends in the triumph of love, she touches the heart and stimulates the mind. Here is a writer who had this reader laughing through my tears, crying through my laughter and begging for more.

Like the Energizer Bunny she keeps going and going!

From the 1930's onward, Liz walks you through her life. No, she runs at the speed of light, stopping only to share those precious moments that have burned their way into her memory cells. And there are many. A life filled with emotions of both happiness and sadness and sprinkled with Liz's unique sense of humor. I dare say, when readers of a younger generation pick up this book, they will undoubtedly be overcome by a wash of jealousy, wondering why they couldn't have lived in such a fulfilling time. An excellent book to leave on the coffee table, so that at any given time you can open a page at random and read the story printed there. I guarantee you will find yourself turning pages until you suddenly agree with what Liz says, "My goodness, where did the time go?"

She writes! She photographs! She's a poet! She moves me!

I first read Liz's work on Francis Ford Coppola's web site, Zoetrope and have loved her stories ever since.

She has taken me on many journeys and each time it's as if I'm right there with her, living through her upbringing during the Great Depression, trying in vain to find a way to release her son, trapped in rocks as the fast-approaching tide threatened his life, making me relive them again through her eyes and skillful words.

This is such a charming look back at seventy-plus years of one woman's life and the events and non-events that made her who she is.

I would recommend this book for the young, to let them see how and why we've come so far. I'd recommend it for the old to remind them of where we've been.

I have read it through several times--it's a short read--and have loaned it to all my friends, who loved it too.

I just went to Djibouti for a 10 day visit and this is one of the only English speaking guidebooks available (used). Luckily, it's very well written and the descriptions are still spot on. Maybe it's because very little changes in Djibouti given its geological history, but the author's recommendations (restaurants and tourist attractions) are still accurate. I've used a lot of lonely planet guides and this is by far the most readable and full of interesting details. Highly recommended!

As a Lonely Planet author, I'd like to echo the words of other reviewers of this book. This is clearly Lonely Planet's best title - the writing is clear, concise and informative, the asides are entertaining, the tone is objective yet engaging, and Frances Linzee Gordon's photos are nothing short of spectacular. Congratulations, Frances - you've produced a winner!

A recent front page article in the New York Times on the Lalibela churches in northern Ethiopia sent me running for my LP copy of this book. I was most pleasantly surprised to find over a dozen pages of detailed information on this incredible center of early Christianity. F. Linzee-Gordon's first hand account of a visit to the churches provided a most informative background lacking in the NY Times article. Well done!

I live in Norway, and Africa's Horn is far from my everyday life. I have travelled several times to Eritrea though, and have been searching for guide books from the country. When I went to Eritrea last fall it was with great pleasure I bought the LP book by Frances Linzee Gordon, Ethiopia, Eritrea & Djibouti.

The book is one of the best LP books I've read. The writing is clearly, and it gives us good insight in history, facts, geography, and so on. I have read parts of the book about all three countries, but the Eritrean part is the only one I have actuallu used when travelling.

The books has some very good pictures and maps, and give alot of up to date information. My favorite part is the part about Asmara's architecture, "Asmara, or Piccola Roma, soon came to epitomise the new philosophy: it was not just beautiful, but was well planned, well built and, above all, functiomal. The book is a good guide to use when you plan your travel ahead, and is even better when you actually are there and need or want information.

An extra benefit of the book is the small notes you find alot of, giving interesting information. Reading these notes makes your travel alot more special.

When I travel I use my guidebooks as kind of diaries. I write down restaurants I visit, hotel I stay at, interesting places I see and so on. And this book is filled with my writings almost on all pages. Gordon has seen it all, and gives very useful information about a very interesting, though little known country.

This book has been very hard to put down ever since I first got it a few weeks ago. I just can't stop playing "Into The West" and "The Return of the King". This book really, really shows the genius masterpiece in its right form, that Howard Shore composed for the Lord of the Rings. Most of the songs are fairly easy to play and great just for your own enjoyment/entertainment but also perfect for solo recitals, or group performances. Buy this together with 'The Fellowship of the Ring' and 'The Two Towers' for your ultimate enjoyment!

The battle for Middle-Earth rages on, and the forces of good have one final stand against the face of evil. Also, Frodo and Sam go through their hard times together, yet with love being their success. And there is a very shocking surprise for the people of Dunedain. I would call it the most emotionally satisfying book I have ever read.

I love this! It is much better than the Two Towers or Felloship books. Why? Because I'm a pianist, and these solos are actually fun to play. The other two books are covered in my handwritten changes to the extent of looking like a Beethoven autograph. While I still make changes in ROTK, these are much better arranged for the pianist who enjoys playing.

Having lived in the South, I can really appreciate this cookbook. It contains a wide range of recipes that are generally referred to as `soul food.' These are dishes that you might find being cooked daily in the home, for weekend family get-togethers, or neighborhood potlucks. Most of the ingredients would generally be found in a typical southern kitchen cupboard, and/or easily acquired at the supermarket. It is a very practical collection suggesting that good Southern cooking doesn't need to be difficult.

Many of the recipes are "award winning recipes" from the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Scattered throughout are other recipes that could stand as equals with the `winners'. I especially liked Lil's Jambalaya, Spicy Chicken Casserole, and Apple Cake. The only downfall with a few of the recipes is that the dish is cooked in the microwave. Someone with basic cooking experience could easily figure out temperature and cooking times in a conventional oven, but this may not be every reader.
I really liked this cookbook. It is presented in an easy to follow manner and has a coil spine making it stay in place on the kitchen counter. The instructions are simple and uncomplicated suggesting these are realistic recipes for everyday. If you are looking for a cookbook filled with Southern comfort food recipes, this would be a great choice.

A Fun Collection of Authentic Louisiana Recipe

Review Date: 2006-02-10
Do you love Southern home-cooked foods? If you have ever been to Louisiana, you know that there is nothing like the flavors that come from that historic State. Cooking in the Louisiana tradition is close to my heart since all of my family comes from Louisiana. That's why I love to collect cookbooks of Louisiana recipes. So it was a natural for me to pick up the "Louisiana's Award-Winning Recipes Cookbook" by Missy Armstrong, Dottie Brewer and Harrietta Randazzo. If you're looking for simple to prepare, real home-cooking, tasty recipes, you'll enjoy this compact cookbook.

Louisiana is known for rich, savory dishes and this collection of award-winning recipes by home cooks presents a good variety of dishes to explore. The "Louisiana Award-Winning Cookbook" is comprised mainly from a collection of recipes that were submitted to the New Orleans Times Picayune Newspaper for a contest to see who could cook up the best recipes. The authors say this book contains award winning recipes from Louisiana "that reveal methods of preparing the dishes that were kept secret for generations."

One thing for sure, you have to love rich, high-fat foods to really enjoy authentic Louisiana cooking. The recipes in this cookbook carry on that tradition and do not bend to the rules of any contemporary diet craze. For example, the "Everyday Country Cornbread" lists Gold Metal self-rising flour and 2 tablespoons of Crisco butter flavored shortening with the option to use plain Crisco shortening in the ingredients. Another example is the "Surprise Chicken Kiev" that calls for 2 teaspoons of Tony Chachere's Creole seasoning to flavor the pounded chicken breasts. You might need to substitute these types of ingredients with something more accessible or fitting into your diet choices. However, if you can stick as close as possible to the recipe, you will have a great experience of the basic flavor and zest of the authentic Louisiana dish.

For the most part, the ingredients used are readily available and I tried several of the dishes in my kitchen as a treat for my family. The "Spicy Okra Puffs" were easy to prepare and added just a bit of heat on the tongue with the addition of Tabasco Sauce in the mixture. My family enjoyed the "Steak au Poivre" dish for Sunday dinner that was marinated in a cup of dry Vermouth which tenderized the meat and added to the simple flavors which is another little known tradition of Louisiana cooking.

You'll find some dishes for special occasions that you might have wondered how to prepare such as the "New Orleans Cajun Fried Turkey" with Cajun Injection Seasoning, or the "Golden Glazed Rock Cornish Hens" with a homemade golden glaze.

The cookbook does not have an index which means you have to skim whole sections to find a recipe. But the short chapters make it easy to find what you need. Although the book is not too large, it provides a full range of dishes to try, from appetizers and dips to beverages, vegetables, meats and desserts. I like this cookbook. Good recipes from this region are a treat and it's even better when you find no-frills recipes that come from the home kitchen of cooks from the area. "Louisiana's Award-Winning Recipes" represents a labor of love that will be a welcome addition to the shelves of cooks who love Louisiana foods.

It wouldn't have been fair to review the husbands poetry (Lifespeak) without reviewing the wife's collection. Together they make a witty, fun-loving couple. Love Lingers was sensuous without being ridiculous and the poems were short enough for my attention span and kept me from not losing the meaning before the poem was over. Her language and use of words catches you by surprise and makes you realize that poetry really doesn't have to rhyme. I recommend this.

"Like a fine wine that gets better with age so does the spicy poetry of Love Lingers. With each succulent turn of the page the reader is held captive by the words and by the possibilities."

Love Lingers is one of the tastiest poetry collections I've read in a long time. Dominique's verbal concoctions leave you wondering how in the world she came up with these images but so thankful that she did. My favorite lines include "I'm not naked, I'm in Love", and "Walked me like a mangy mutt". Grosvenor takes us head-first (or should we say heart-first)into the good, the bad, and the ugly and shows us that in life and love...it's all poetry. Dom is truly a writer's inspiration and a reader's dream. Love Lingers and so does Dom's poetry.

I absolutely love this collection of poetry by Linda Dominique Grosvenor. I've read the collection, countless times. Often I'd skip around to various selections according to how I'd felt or what was going on in my life. The book opens up with a quote from Nikki Giovanni stating that "we love because it's the only true adventure." Well, this collection for me is also like an adventure. It greets you at the door with a "Kiss" and then sends you through 109 different experiences. One poem after the other, daring you to inhale each thought, each word and feel beyond the obvious.

I have a few favorites. "Breasts" for some reason makes me imagine my lady, looking into the mirror, topless and perhaps noticing me spying her reflection. I gave the poem called "Chocolate" to her and told her that she needed to read that one and think about me. She laughed. It's also one of my favorites though. Other favorites are "Showering,"
"Honeymoon," "Kid," which got a quick laugh out of me, "King,"
"Truth," and "Yesterday." Actually, I could go on and on... My favorites in this collection truly depend on what's happening in my life.

I'd just like to thank Linda Dominique Grosvenor for creating such an insightful collection of poetry. One can tell that she is definitely in tuned and forever in touch with what Love is truly about. This book will forever remain displayed on my coffee table so others can peep it out. I think I better get a second copy, just in case...

When I began reading "Love Lingers" I was immediately drawn to page 101 a poem titled "Misunderstood." After reading this poem I knew Dom and I had walked the same paths once. "Assume" was also a favorite because out of all my loves this particular person assumed all the wrong things about me and lost the chance at the greatest love of all time.

Love Lingers is raw and filled with the random thoughts of love told by Linda Dominique Grosvenor. I am not sure when she felt in her heart to express her thoughts through paper and pen but we are blessed that she has.

I went directly to Amazon and purchased this cookbook after borrowing it from a co-worker. It's a terrific find using modern-day, healthy products, such as egg substitutes and yogurt. All the recipes I've tried are especially yummy, and even better, provide guilt free eating! Pork Chops and Applesauce: A Collection of Recipes and Reflections

This is the best cook book that I have ever used. I am just amazed; I can cook healthy with food that I actually use on a daily basis. Usually when I try and cook a healthy meal for my family, I have to go to a health food store, like Trader Joes, just to find the ingredients.

Excellent - uses actual brand name ingredients

Bought our copy years ago, and now buying one for our daughter who also loves the recipes. It uses actual brand name ingredients, so it's easier to follow the recipe. One of my favorites is the BAKED cordon bleu, which has also become a favorite of my younger daughter. We've got it tabbed, since we use it so much. At this cost, certainly worth it, and its gold/silver edged pages and hardcover make it an excellent gift for many occasions.

A healthy cookbook you'll actually use!

I borrowed a copy of this from my secretary and then had to get my own copy. The food is so good, you don't realize that you're eating healthy! I have yet to find a recipe that hasn't turned out to be very delicious in the book. I highly recommend it.

One of the best....

Even if you have knowledge or a beginner of the art of candle magic this book will give you the necessary information. It goes through the types of candles, colors, figural, moon phases, planetary hours and some other vital information. My only drawback of this book is that although it provides all the information to burning your candles, it does not explain how to read divinational signs. The skill of preparing and lighting the candles are explained in detail. One important part is the end result. It's important to know if the work was successful or failed. The way a candle burns can give you an indication if things are going to happen slowly or quickly, good or bad. As well as how the flames burn, if the glass encased candle is clear or black. I am now searching for a book that can give me this other piece of information in greater detail. Overall, this is one of the best books to own in your pursuit to mastering candle magic.

This booklet is a good introduction to working various candles and lights. I would suggest that someone interested in burining candles pick this up and give it a read before they buy another book. I would also say that this book is a good companion to "The master book of candle burning" by Henri Gamache.
There are some helpful illustrations and diagrams for the first time candle lighter. This book is worth having.

This is a 62 page book filled with a treasure of valueable candle burning techniques. There are some basic drawings and charts, details of different types of candles, days and colors, a few magical seals, zodiacal information and more. The cover is also well done showing many types of the 7-day variety candles available on the market today.
