This book changed 49 years of my life and saved my marriage.

A poor self image, trapped by repressions from my childhood, failed relationships, therapy, unsuccessful attempts to save my marriage and finally a devastating separation. My life was being destroyed. I knew something had to change but, I had no idea I was the problem and that I was holding all the answers. I did not like who I was or what I was doing to others. Loving myself was a foreign concept. The exercise in front of the mirror was a very emotional experience that started the process of bringing down walls. As I read on I gained an understanding of past behavior and how these patterns had been the root of my problems. I realized I had spent my life feeling depressed, lonely and sorry for myself. It's no wonder my wife started distancing herself from me. I still have a long road ahead of me but now I know that I can break away from what and who I was. When I find myself slipping back I listen to my 'inner selves' and frequently ask, where did that come, and 'we' talk. I haven't felt this good about myself in my entire life. My wife has noticed a change, we are still separated, and seeing the same therapist. We have 22 years of damagae to repair. Your book is my roadmap to a destination I have been searching out for my entire adult life. You have given us hope. Thank you.

I read this book back in the 80's and still remember its concepts. One of the ideas that stood out to me is that you don't have to be what you have been told you are or even what you think you are. We have many choices but they have been limited by focusing on one way of being. This usually starts in childhood when parents see us one way and the image grows until we believe that's what we are. The book has some great techniques to get you moving if you feel you're stuck in the same old pattern. The authors speak in a very honest, forthright manner and their words seem to jump from the page. This book gets you in touch with feelings and gets you moving. Highly recommend.

Never have I read or listened to a better self help book. The authors get right down to the basics, before people ever heard of Dr. Phil. I am a Psychologist, and I recommend to all my patients to read this book!!! Message to Oprah - Get the authors on your show!!!

The suggestions, techniques, and growth-tasks in this book are exceptional. The book has changed my life, and would change it even more if I was willing to let it. You know that saying about how "when the student is ready..." ? If you're ready, this book is a damn good teacher. Here's the downside: the two writers are very different, and one is sarcastic, overly-aggressive, and a big turn-off. The other is reasonable and presents his views in a neutral manner. It's impossible to tell which writer is which, but the one who writes the scenes with dialogue should back off. Aside from that, I can say that I'm no fan of self-help books, but I am a fan of this one. It's insightful, powerful, and effective.

This book is more of a collection of the main summits in Idaho than a hiking book. I enjoyed the historical and geaolical information to understand a little bit more on the area I'm living but otherwise it just list the main summits (there is a lot of them thought) in Idaho. You can't just use it for planning purpose but it is a nice addition and collection of information for planning.

This is the only published source of climbing Idaho's mountains, alpine climbs, and rock climbs on peaks. This is a much revised and improved version over the first. While the book doesn't contain climbing topos or get into extreme route detail, it gives enough to get you interested, inspired, and up most peaks. My only critique would be on the Approach section- which can be a bit cumbersome to reference and the fact that it covers the whole state and can seem "thin" on info at times- Idaho is a huge state with so many mountains. The photographs and sketches are excellent and so is the brief history. Many mountains have more than 1 route described and the Sawtooth section is so much better than last edition. Great job and I can't wait for the next version.

Tom Lopez knows Idaho mountains better than nearly anyone in the state. This book covers nearly every mountain range and nearly all main peaks in Idaho. It gives class ratings and very good directions for access to the peaks and hikes. His book helped my dad and I climb the 9 peaks in Idaho over 12,000 feet. We wouldn't have been able to do it without this book. If you want to climb Idaho mountains, you need this book.

He is insightful and incisive. He notes and cuts away the nonessential to reveal the underlying...nothingness of the 1970s.
"The Man Who Always Peaked Too Soon" is brilliant. Great drawings..and mini-essays.

"In Our Time" examines, through essays and sketches, the fluxtuating cultural norms of 1970's America. It is a sort of logical literary culmination of Wolfe's "Me decade" works: The onservations of "Radical Chic," "Mauve Gloves and Madmen," and even bits of "The Painted Word" resonate in this more succinct and cutting collection. The "Me Decade" spawned countless small groups of so-called free thinkers, self-healers, and folks liberating themselves from the brutal tyranny of the worlds most prosperous economy. In "In Our Time," Wolfe is most interested with these people, whether they be the newly prosperous prole tearing up the roadways in monstrous autos, the bell-bottomed middle manager smoking marijuana during the lunch hour, or the literary, artistic, and political elements who fashioned themselves in response to wanton secularity. In addition to short essays, some pulled directly from his earlier books, Wolfe compiles and adds to his earlier drawings. These are wonderful to see in a large format, where Wolfe's rough, yet funny and insightful observations on the human body (specifically an American one) become all the better to revel in. Wolfe wonderfully expresses the basic silliness of fashion consciousness in the 1970's through sketches of hopefully hip septegenerians and young punks as dandies. In addition, the short essays, especially the opening comments on the end of the decade, are vintage Wolfe. Unfortunately, this edition is out of print and hard to find. However, it is the coffee table accesory for any fan of Wolfe or of that bitter pill of a decade we call the 1970's.

If you've never seen a cartoon by Tom Wolfe, it's a surprise and a real pleasure to see that he draws as brilliantly as he writes.

In Our Time has 89 of his cartoons (and a couple essays). You'll want to save it and look at the cartoons every couple of years -- "The Maternal Instinct," say, or "No. 1 The Modern Churchman," or maybe "The Man Who Always Peaked Too Soon," or the cartoon of a hugely fat Edward Kennedy wearing a tiny bathing suit, with a roach clip, a sacred heart locket, a coke spoon and a crucifix, each one dangling in his chest hairs, on its own separate chain.

You'll have your own favorites. Possibly the two cartoons about Jimmy Carter. They're especially sweet.

Any fostering an interest in Irish history, culture and peoples will relish the gorgeous blend of color photos and cultural insights to be had from IRELAND: STANDING STONES TO STORMONT. From names and places to Irish legends, mysticism, and peoples, IRELAND captures all this during the author's personal journey through the country, surveying both links to ancient history - architecture, ruins, heritage sites - and modern landscape alike. The author's first-person insights contribute a lovely blend of travelogue and survey. IRELAND could've just as easily been featured in our arts or travel sections, but is reviewed here for its wide-ranging appeal across boundaries, defying categorization.

The Irish people thrive in two worlds: the earthly and the divine, folklore and the present. To understand today's Irish, one begins in the past with their rich world of mythology. Ancient stories shaped the landscape, as much as they were wrought from it, and remain integrated into the everyday lives of a people who are unalterably tied to their land and generations. Kumpf retells the old stories, while revealing their modern-day form with superb photographs. Like all good art books, you may open it to any page or absorb it from cover to cover. It's a history lesson, cultural survey, and a bit of a tour book rolled into one.

Ireland: Standing Stones to Stormont is more than a "coffee table book." It's a reference filled with dozens of gorgeous photographs of Ireland. But it's also a collection of legends, lore and personal experiences of author Kumpf. I was compelled to read every page, astonished by the incredible pictures and entertained by stories about Irish history, faeries . . . even hazel nuts (my favorite story in the book). Yes, I proudly display this book on my coffee table. And I visit it a lot!

I have read several books on Ireland and this one is my favorite so far. He not only gives you information about Irish history; but, does so in a way that really makes you feel as though you were there. His respect for the heritage, traditions and legends was what I found most enjoyable. Ireland is a country rich in so many ways. It's beauty and stories I never tire of reading or hearing. Tom Kumpf has created a fabulous book which brings out the magic of this wonderful place.

This is definitely one of the better (a lot better!) books on Java I've bought so far(I've got about 10 others). Explains difficult topics well. I use a more general book on Java for a general view of the language/classes and I use this one for more difficult topics which a lot of books only mention but do not explain. The use of diagrams and figures together with easy to follow explanations gives a better understanding of Java topics like streams, threads and networking.

Most cookbooks I buy end up on a dusty shelf mainly because I cannot spend time on elaborate recipes during my busy day. I was given this book at my bridal shower over 5 years ago, and I've been using it religiously since then. I usually cook healthy things and am always looking for simple recipes and things that taste good even though they are healthy. And this book has it all.
She writes a candid story about her weight battles, and then the delicious recipes follow. She has collected them over time with the help of her family, coworkers, guests on GMA, favorite restaurants, etc. They are segregated into the usual cookbook sections with the addition of some new ones, like dishes that kids love. My favorite recipes would have to be the spicy tomato soup and Academy Award Winning chiliburgers. This was a great gift that definitely is not collecting dust.

Joan makes a comment in the book that she hopes it becomes the readers stickypage book. The one you go back to time after time and the pages become sticky from use. It has for me. I was very apprehensive about purchasing a "celebrity" cookbook..looked at it and thumbed the pages no less than six times. But its worth the purchase price for the recipes alone. You don't have to read about Joan if you don't want to. The recipes are fantastic and everyone I have served to guests has elicited raves and requests for copies of the recipes

For those starting out in business, as a consultant or just need a tune-up at work, this is a great read. I found myself writing in the margins every time a new idea popped in my head. The concepts and principles were very helpful as I was rewriting my resume and creating a new brochure. While preparing for a presentation on Ethics, I found myself using the principles to include a dynamism and clarity to my presentation.

Why Marketing Ideas Work

Review Date: 2007-01-28
Doug Hall has distilled a lifetime of marketing research into this one book with the essentials on what a successful marketing campaign should contain. He does this with a dynamic use of statistics to supports his points and ancedotal evidence from his experiences in the helping businesses.

Designed for the individual that must build and manage the marketing program of his or her company, this book has ramifications that impact all levels of the hierarchy. It does so by reminding the reader that the business exists to serve a fundamental need of the client - and everybody must understand and be able to articulate what valuable purpose they serve.

Developed in two sections, Hall expands on how to generate better (more effective) marketing messages in the first and how to generate new ideas in the second. From the first pages, it is clear that this is a serious book of applied research. Jump Start Your Business Brain doesn't want you to win advertising awards; the best award is making more money with less, but better informed, effort.

The sections include small exercises to illustrate your current position and define your strengths and weaknesses. The clarity of the writing reatly assists in the process. Doug Hall doesn't leave you guessing about the application of his principles. He is very explicit in his statements and backs it with evidence. This isn't a "How-to" book, though; it's a "Why-to". As becomes clear as you read, when you develop the "Why-to", the "how-to" becomes apparent. After that, it's follow through.

The highest praise I can offer it is that I have used the principles to redesign my campaigns. I know my messages and more importantly, my clients now know my message.

My increased sales are a testament to Doug Hall's applied research.

He has a handful of basic messages that he uses to define and discuss prospective products or services. Within these he uses examples from actual situations to describe what he is talking about. He has somewhat of a scientific or engineering mind in that he uses a statistical approach to evaluating specific business situations.

This is one of those books that any small businessman needs to read once in a while. Just one or two new thoughts, new ideas easily make it worth the time it takes to read and the book's low price.

As a physicist by education I have to make one comment. He quotes Einstein's famous comment, 'God does not play dice with the universe.' In this comment Einstein was talking about quantum mechanics. And basically Einstein was wrong. Einstein wanted fixed hard rules, not statistical probabilities. In this book Mr. Hall uses a lot of statistical backup for his basic messages.
