Now a few years old, but still a useful introduction for anyone who wants to get a better sense of Internet technologies and the programming process. My copy has been making the rounds among various e-commerce clients, content creators, and publishers.

Informative book for non-programmers about Java

I am not a programmer, but I wanted to understand Java. The authors started with the fundamentals of the history of programming to provide the reader some background, before jumping to Java. I found the book very imformative about the many terms of the internet: Applet, HTML, Platform etc. The authors developed an easy to understand evolution of program languages from monolith to Java--quite a spand, but successfully convey to the reader. I would highly recommand this book for anyone using the internet, and wants to understand the fundamentals.

What is JAVA? This book will explain it all!

The title says it all! Making "sense" of JAVA. What is it, and how can knowing this help you and your company? Perhaps you are not a Manager, but just a curious web surfer who's wondering what all the hubbub is about. This book is for anyone who asks the question, "what is JAVA". As an added bonus, the book describes thoroughly the inner workings of a company's computer setups, LAN, WAN, dumb terminals, it's all here, explained in easy-to-understand language. The book fills a real need for a down-to-earth information source, without all the "how-to's" of other JAVA books

I found this book to be my very best friend when I started doing a lot of MySQL, and I use it often as a reference now.

The book is a great A-Z of everything MySQL 4.

It is a great technical read with lots of examples, clear concise reflection, and a fantastic appendix.

Excellent book

I like the tool coverage in this MySQL book -- it covers a lot of features which I haven't read about elsewhere, and appears to focus on practical solutions. Based on the three weeks I have been referring to this book, I would say it is the best MySQL book available.

Since it ostensibly covers version 4, the author should have covered secure socket connections in greater detail and given examples of its use. I would also have liked to see references to the text in the otherwise valuable appendix B. Overall, it seems very free of fluff and the examples seem to focus on the case in point.

Excellent book.

Rich in examples and very thorough

While I am not new to databases, I am new to mysql and always spend the most time learning new syntax, processes and "features". The MySQL manual is very clear but left some questions unanswered for me. Mastering MySQL left me with no such gaps, and the numerous in-depth examples (including output) in this book help clarify commands and proper syntax. The book covers everything from installation to administration and includes syntax and function/operator references. These references are clearly detailed and contain a generous number of examples as well.

The book is written from a hands-on point of view which is how I learn best. One very nice aspect of the book is that it provides information for Windows and UNIX environments as opposed to focusing on one or the other.

There are very handy sections on several of the programming APIs, including PHP, Perl, Python, Java, C, ODBC and .NET.

Database beginners will find the sections on Understanding Relational Databases, Database Normalization and Database Design very helpful in understanding database terminology and functionality.

Finally, there is a very detailed index in the back of the book - I really dislike not being able to locate a topic in an index, especially when I know I read it somewhere in the book.

This is a very good overall book for the MySQL database and I'd recommend it to anyone looking to learn about MySQL.

Without a doubt the best, easiest to follow guide on advanced Access 2.0 features and programming. This is the one reference I go to over and over again when trying to solve a tricky problem or find a more elegant solution. It details many undocumented and underdocumented features that make Access 2.0 the powerful tool that it is. This book gave me the quantum leap in understanding Access Basic and associated advanced appliation development tools. I recommend it to anyone building Access applications, large and small, and for power users who want to improve the look and feel of their databases

I own Berry and Linoff's first two books on data mining (Data Mining Techniques and Mastering Data Mining); they're the best, and this book lives up to their standards. All three are great for not just teaching the technical stuff, but how and when to apply it to solve problems I really face at my company.

We're just starting to look at mining the clickstream, and this is the first book I've found that cuts through the hype and really comes clean on what works and doesn't work. Good, solid techincal information, but better is their coverage of business issues. I love all of the detailed cases. Great job!

I continue to use it for reference as a resource manual. I highly encourage anyone just getting interested in the concept of data mining, anyone in sales, marketing, public relations, and analytics to start with this book first. After reading this book you will have a strong foundation into data mining applications and a vivid sense of direction on how to make it work for you personally!!!!

This textbook is the best intermediate to advanced statistics textbook currently available on the market today. The Excel instructions are self explanatory and include every step needed to apply a particular statistical procedure. The instructions for calculating joint probability tables and constructing tree diagrams are excellent and easy to follow. The example problems include all the steps. The notation used is simple, direct and straightforward. It will not cause any confusion for a student. The handling of p-values in hypothesis testing and multiple regression analysis is very well done.Based on my extensive teaching experience at the college and university level,I would highly recommend this book to a student, who is taking a statistics course that emphasizes applications, at the intermediate to advanced level.

Great Book! I have been using ColdFusion for 3 years, and read many ColdFusion books. Every book I've come across simply tells you "how" to do stuff. I can only learn how to do a so many times. However, Optimizing ColdFusion takes a different approach - it takes what I already know, and shows me how to do it well. This is the first CF book I have read that covers the core development obstacles that we as ColdFusion developers and designers struggle with on a daily basis. Not only does this book analyze trouble areas, but it also shows how to improve upon application design, coding, and even some troubleshooting. I also liked that this book brushed on the Fusebox methodology, and discussed how Spectra impacted enterprise ColdFusion development. The information is this book seems to define the distinction between ColdFusion developers and ColdFusion gurus. I would definitely recommend this book to other ColdFusion users.

Although there is some good basic level information in this book, it is not for the person trying to learn how to program Cold Fusion, but how to make your Cold Fusion programming better. The book has great examples and how tos of everything from setting up the Cold Fusion Administrator to writing better SQL statements. I particularly found the SQL statement information very helpful. The author (Chris Cortes) goes beyond writing simple SELECT, UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE statements. He gets into far more complex SQL like writing SELECT statements within a SELECT statement, and writing your SQL so that you optimize the speed of your queries. He also provides good examples of the new query of a query functionality that CF 5.0 offers. Cortes also offers great information on the proper usage of various CF tags and functions, not just telling you how to use them, but when it is best to use them. Overall, this is the best CF book I have read. However, make sure you know a little something about CF before buying this book.

This book gives you tremendously helpful and candid facts/ideas about working with Oracle's Designer/2000, similar to a friend giving you some very good advice before you attempt a big journey. However, for all new purchasers of Designer/2000 Version 2, the book is downlevel and needs to be updated for the new version ASAP! Except for having to compensate for the differences in versions, I have found this book to be indispensable. My copy is already very worn and I've only owned it two months!

GREAT book!!!

A really great text on Designer/2000. Takes you in logical and consistant fashion from very fundamental concepts into detailed application design. Gives excellent examples and step-by-step instructions for navigation through the various components of the tool and their interaction. I recommend this text for both tyros and experienced Designer/2000 gurus. My copy is rapidly becoming underlined and tabbed. Too bad there is not a hard cover edition, as I predict that my copy is going to get a lot of usage.

Essential Survival Guide for ORACLE Designer/2000 users
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1997-01-25
Author Carrie Anderson is first and foremost a Teacher (note the capital T). She and co-author David Wendelken (also a trainer and consultant) have performed a rare service in the publishing world: they've written a computer text filled with good humor that doesn't fall into the trap of being "cute." And it's certainly NOT for "dummies!" "The ORACLE Designer/2000 Handbook" may not carry the official imprimatur from the folks in Redwood Shores, but it is an uncanny distillation of the essence of the Designer/2000 system. Follow the authors' advice and leverage their wisdom and you may find yourself not only more productive, but easier to get-along-with at work! Tackling ORACLE's market-leading CASE (Computer-Aided Software Engineering) tool can be a daunting effort. While manuals and on-line documentation are usually adequate for the quick answer, A&W's guide puts the product and its capabilities under objective scrutiny. Poking gentle fun at some of the more mundane aspects of application development, the authors go far beyond the features of the system. This leads the reader to want to experiment and test what's said--not just take it on face value. The experienced user may wish to start with the excellent appendices that supplement the many practical how-to's in the handbook. A frequently asked detail is the use of the system's Application Programmatic Interface (API). A&W not only explain its use, but include clear and concise examples of programs that are downloadable from the authors' web pages at publisher Addison-Wesley Longman.: http://www.awl.com/cp/anderson-wendelken.html -- In addition, there is a terrific bibliography that reads like a Who's Who of structured design and methodology. If you're using, or planning to use, ORACLE's Designer/2000, I would heartily recommend adding this excellent book to your CASE bookshelf, though you may want to consider buying two: one to treasure and one to use every day in the privacy of your cubicle. I liked this book. Coming from SQL Server 2000 to the Oracle environment, I had a lot of questions. This book covered the subject material completely without over-coaching or being too simple.

It was an excellent read and a book that I refer to often. Well written.

What are you thinking of SQL? Is it a difficult language? I thought the answer is "NO" until i bought this book. Or you may think whether it is a language? I also told you that it is really a language and is fourth generation language, which is English-like language and you use such languages just by telling it what you want to do, not necessary to specify any actions. That's OK!!!

I think the author spent so much time to construct this book and revised it many many times. I saw there weren't many errata in this book and the construction is great. It is very easy to read and to learn just following the chapters one after another.

It is also great for keeping it as a reference for your studies or on your jobs. It is comprehensive showing all the things in SQL statements and each function that any elements are included. It is clear to show all necessary or optional symbols for the use in retrieving data from database.

I think if you have ever learnt SQL and you think to start learning SQL, you should buy this book for your first step starting to learn SQL.

Finally! A textbook on Oracle SQL!

I had almost given up hope that I would never learn SQL until I bought this book. It is the first non-study guide I have come across on Oracle SQL. It actually has exercises for you to do so you can see if you really understand what you are doing. Although the Bijou Thomas Study Guide is good, you really need a textbook. And this is it. I really understood joins for first time! Surprised more people don't know about this book. It is superb!

It's a very good walk thru the many paths of VFP. The authors have a throughfully understanding of the mechanics of the program, and takes you from level 0 (as was mine) to the unlimeted ceiling of VFP. The spanish Ed. has an error on page 313. Other than that, the book is perfect, as the author's dog: POOKIE

Pinter's writing style is as fluffy and self-aggrandizing as in FoxTalk. I also found the information contained to be less than useful beyond a cursory level.
