This is a replica of a once-famous but long-forgotten cartoon anthology first published in 1913. At the time, it was already a piece of nostalgia, celebrating the artist's (Clare Briggs's) 1880s childhood. I read and re-read it as a child in the 1950s. It was like having a great grandfather who was a captivating storyteller.

The setting is a rural midwestern town. Each cartoon has a dozen or more characters, hitching a ride on the runners of a sleigh, running through the water plug's stream, skinny-dipping at the reservoir, cadging ice off the ice truck in summer, playing post office, hanging out on Saturday night (and pulling the wooden tub out of the closet for the weekly bath), and mocking a poor kid's first long pants. A precursor of "Peanuts" in its profundity, but even richer and more flavorful. Delightful.

Skillfully translated into English by Ted Wang & Chen Chen, The Oil Vendor and the Courtesan is a collection selected stories by Feng Menglong (1574-1646), during China's Ming dynasty. Merchants, scholars, housewives, magistrates, craftsmen, courtesans, abbots, nuns, and children populate these creative, witty, and insightful tales, which cover a surprisingly broad cross-section of Chinese life of the era, both urban and rural. As engaging for lay readers as it is for dedicated students of Chinese culture and literature, The Oil Vendor and the Courtesan is a wondrous work of classical literature, highly recommended. Readers hungry for more are sure to enjoy the previous anthology in the series, "Two Slaps" collecting more tales by Feng's contemporary, Ling Mengchu (1580-1644).

The book is like no other--difficult to describe. Rare. Vivid at times, thick with smoke at others. Rhythmic. Beat. Acutely sensitive. Think of the visual range of Helmut Newton or, even better, Guy Bourdin, to Edward Steichen and you'll get the idea. Few copies were published. If you're lucky you can still get one for under $120.00, but I haven't found any more available. Maybe I got the last one.

The best book I have ever seen that brings together the business and legal concerns in real estate transactions. A must for any investor or lawyer who works in real estate.

This was one of the only law books that I have actually been able to read and remain entertained. Good for all universal real estate laws in the United States.

This book is both instructional and timeless. The straightforward approach to consumating these agreements is inspirational. Both authors, but especially Ben Henszey are to be congratulated for their concise and clear explanations.

I was privileged enough to be able to take two major courses with the author of this book at USC Law School in Los Angeles in the 2001-2002 school year. Our text book was in fact, this title. It was a newer edition that had yet to be published, and goes far beyond the basic Real Property to much more pertinent and practicable issues of real estate transactions and finance, even delving into key elements necessary in commercial real estate law practice such as 1021 transfers and the like. I have yet to come across any book more conclusive and comprehensive than this Lefcoe text on the subject of real estate in all of my studies and research. I recommend it to anyone who wants to take a serious look at the subject of real estate transactions and finance on both an legal academic and practitioner's level.
